VW's get 40 now, it is easy, and it won't put millions out of work.... that comment is extreme and false. We have the tech to do it easily. But Oil and Auto are in bed. Can't you see that? You go Black Panther!! 424951[/snapback] When they can start getting 40-50 mpg in a van/SUV that I can haul kids around in, and if need be pull a trailer or a boat, etc... let me know. Sure not every needs that but who are you to tell me I can't. I pay extra taxes if it costs more then 30K, I pay higher fuel costs, plus a tax surcharge if it doesn't get enough MPG. Good luck with your little VW/hybrid in a snow storm, or major flooding, or hauling wood back to heat your house to save on heating fuel, or going camping with the boy scouts, family. Assuming that world oil markets continue to work as they do today, the OPEC could countermand any potential price impact of ANWR coastal plain production by reducing its exports by an equal amount." It drives me absolutely nuts seeing a single person driving around in a luxury SUV here in the CITY. Of course, these are the first people in line to B word about the gas prices. I'm not saying SUV's, pickups shouldn't exist. They are necessary vehicles for several functions such as those you lay out. HOWEVER, they have been marketed and consumed as mass-market vehicles for people who don't need them. These people have given little thought to the impact their vehicles and driving habits have on the environment and on fuel consumption. There is adequate supply of oil but no place to refine it. Refineries are at 93% capacity (which by the way is very high and close to maximum). So any problems like Hurricane Katrina cause huge problems. Oil prices may not go much above $60 because we are at max capacity - there is no demand curve to flatten with increases in price !!! Also after a point alternative fuels and technologies start getting investments so it is in OPEC's best interest to not cross that (price) line.
