It's more like the snake swallowing its tail. Stations test music. Best testing songs get played more. Lower testing get dropped. So you test again next year. Better testing songs play more, lower ones dropped. After a few years you're playing the same 500 or fewer songs over and over. Personally I can't listen to classic rock stations any more. I don't want to hear Freebird, Layla, or Stairway for the ten millionth time.

 

If I may make a suggestion. WXGR is a low power FM here in NH that plays a very diverse mix of music to groove to. Very eclectic. A great background while hanging by the pool.
