Mike Williams cap figure continues to bother me

Recommended Posts

It still seems wierd that he was given so much. I do not think a #4 pick makes that much on thier rookie contract. He is definitly not worth all of the money he is going to make...  ;)  ;)

When I look at these numbers I would be interested to see his original contract. Seems to me TD worked a miracle here with $6 million of his bonuses tied to still be on the team after three years. Seems to me this was wise on TDs part. This way they had three years to evaluate big Mike and if he was a bust, they saved 6 million. As`well the cap hit the first thrtee years was 2 million /year. As someone else said , redoing now would mean making a major commitment to the guy. You all prepared to have big mike locked in for tghe next 6 years.

You asked, I provide ;)

Details of Big Mike's contract:

- $7.275M SB on signing spread over 6 years length (4 years, plus options for 2006 & 2007) at $1,212,500 per season.

- Base: $962,500 in 2002; $558,125 in 2003; $486,250 in 2004; $726,875 in 2005; $967,500 in 2006; $1,208,125 in 2007.

- $3.225M 2006 Option/Buyout due in 2003, spread at $645,000 per season from 2003-2007.

- $1.25M 2007 Option/Buyout due in 2004, spread at $312,500 per season from 2004-2007.

- Cap Numbers are currently figured using base plus bonuses (including options). 2002 - $2,175,000; 2003 - $2,415,625; 2004 - $2,656,250; 2005 - $2,896,875; 2006 - $3,317,500; 2007 - $3,378,125.

- Escalators and incentives could increase the deal to a total of $44M for the 6 year length.

- One time $1.25M NLTBE for minimum p/t & team NLTBE any season.

- up to $1M Pro Bowl honors.

- One-time $550K NLTBE in 2003.

- 2005 Escalates to $4M base + $3M roster bonus. $1.5M other NLTBE in 2005.

- 2006 Escalates to $4M base + $3M roster bonus (option year). $1.5M other NLTBE in 2006.

- 2007 Escalates to $5M base (option year). $3.5M other NLTBE in 2007.

*** The deal is structured in a manner that Williams' will have palatable cap hits if he is a decent player, but if he is a very good player the Escalators that kick in after 3 seasons will force the Bills into signing him to a long-term extension at top money.

Thanks for the info, Clump.  I admit that I love watching people panic over the cap, but when you calm people down with the cap situation, i can see the posters slowly walk away from the ledges.  :w00t:

I'm not panicked over the cap, but I do think if possible(via restructure), 9 million in cap money could be used more wisely than being all tied up by an average RT.
