ANALYSIS
Is anyone better for an NFL team in the secondary than Super Bowl hero Malcolm Butler? Gil Brandt says there's a draft prospect who may just be the best DB in the market. See the top 10 defensive backs available.

8) E.J. Gaines, free agent

Gaines didn't arrive in Buffalo until August of last year as part of the trade that sent Sammy Watkins to Los Angeles -- but despite the compressed adjustment period with his new team, the cornerback played well. The one glaring concern stems from his injury history, as he's missed five games in each of the past two seasons. But the fact that he's only turning 26 this month works to his advantage -- as does the skill with which he defends the pass.

A lot of people howled when McDermott traded Watkins for a second round pick and acquiring Gaines. In hindsight it was a good deal for us. I'm not sure if Gaines is going to leave through free agency or if the Rams are going to sign a new deal with Watkins. But in balance it was a good deal for the Bills.

To get Gaines and a 2nd Round pick for Watkins was a great deal for us. We don't make the playoffs without Gaines. I admit that I was heated when the trade went down, but realized why after watching how Gaines fit into this defense. I really hope we re-sign him.

I'm reluctant to say it but I don't believe that the Bills will sign him. He increased his value with his upscale play to the extent that he made himself too costly for the Bills. As well as he has played there is a durability issue that make the Bills hesitant to risk paying him what he would command from the market.
