Before We Start Talking About "Continuity" Either Way . . .

Take a look at what the last SIX Jets coaches did in their first years (that is, coaching the last guy's players):

1997 9-7 Bill Parcells

2000 9-7 Al Groh

2001 10-6 Herm Edwards Lost Wild Card Playoffs (Raiders) 38–24

2006 10-6 Eric Mangini Lost Wild Card Playoffs (Patriots) 37–16

2009 9-7 Rex Ryan Won Wild Card Playoffs (Bengals) 24–14

Won Divisional Playoffs (Chargers) 17–14

Lost Conference Championship (Colts) 30–17

2015 10-6 Todd Bowles

Three made the playoffs. Parcells took over a 1-15 team. Bowles won 10 games.

My point is only that it's NOT too much to demand improvement and even success in the first year. Continuity can be overrated.

Jeff Fisher spent 22 years as a head coach. While he did reach the playoffs a few times, he never built a perennial winner and probably never would.

So, I agree, continuity can be overrated.

But it can be underrated too.

I think it's clear in hindsight that the Browns, for example, should have been more patient with Bill Belichick as their coach. Bill Walsh went 2-14 his first year and had another dismal season his second year. Bills fans would have demanded his head.

In the end, you're making an educated guess. Is this a guy who will turn things around eventually? Or are we spinning wheels?
