Afghanistan

The history of Afghanistan is full of incidents of "If you can't beat 'em, join 'em." It enough of a cultural trait that it was actually counted on in the US/Northern Alliance assault on Mazar-i-Sharif in late 2001: everyone figured, correctly as it turned out, that if they could assault and capture Mazar-i-Sharif, there would be mass desertions in the region to the Northern Alliance that would provide an immediately useful increase in strength and corresponding decrease in Taliban strength.

So there's nothing really all that noteworthy in Afghan Pashtuns changing sides from the Taliban to the Karzai government. It's the way the region works.
