Directv Loophole

Recommended Posts

So I've been wrestling with signing up with Directv to watch the Bills, but I don't want a whole subscription, dish, fees, etc. I heard about their mobile offering, basically you can add NFL Sunday Ticket to go and watch all of the games on iPads, laptops etc. If you wanted, you could use an HDMI cord and transfer it to your TV.

Anyways, I have found a talk track to simply pay for NFL Sunday Ticket JUST to get "NFL Sunday Ticket to go" without signing up for Directv. That cost would be the same as the NFL Sunday ticket mid-$300s, plus the NFL to go 9.99. With no dish, no contract, nothing. The way around it is, as long as you've never had dish before, to say that you are renting and your landlord will not allow for a dish to be placed on the property. But still mention that you want NFL Sunday Ticket. If you have had a dish, a friend of mine used the line that he was, "working on the road for the majority of the season, and wouldn't be home enough." and they gave it to him. It's case by case, but it would save a ton of money.

Is anyone aware of other ways around having to actually get Directv.

I got the Sunday Ticket To Go service last year. They didn’t require any explanation from me. I don’t have the DirecTV satellite service. I just did the mobile streaming internet thing. They didn’t hassle me about it.

I don’t think I’m gonna do it again this year though. I’ve been considering it, but I don’t want to spend $350 on streaming video that doesn’t look that great, has occasional hiccups and that I can’t pause or record.

Hmm, that's good to know. I wonder why they're giving so much push back this year? I had to talk with three separate people. I mean if you say it was horrible last year, I imagine that a good amount of people complained--hopefully they did something about it. And since it's my only option, I'll be posting on whether it looks any better.

I did complain. The thing that I was most upset about was that the links to the games were sometimes messed up. I think I missed chunks of the first quarter in about 6 or 7 of the games last year. And sometimes I would spontaneously get an error message in the middle of a game and it would take a long time to get back in.

I called DTV (not easy because they don't publish a customer service number--you have to dig for it). They acknowledged that they had problems with their service, but they insisted that their policy is to not provide any rebates or refunds, period!

They know they have you over a barrell. They make you pay the full $350 upfront. Then they make ZERO considerations for bad service. And they make no apologies. They simply tell you there is no recourse. I tried to escalate the issue somewhat, but got tired of banging my head against that wall.

It's unfortunate but true that DTV has exclusive rights. No competition = crazy pricing and poor service.

In their defense, it did improve over the course of the season last year, but still not great. I almost pulled the trigger and got it again this year, but finally decided against it.
