  1. The "Andy Reid didn't win right away" take is embarrassing. He also didn't win a SB with his 1st team but took them to the NFC title game 4 years in a row and the SB. The farthest the Bills have gotten is the AFCCG once and that wasn't a close contest.

    More importantly on Reid, once the peak happened in Philly, it was mostly all downhill from there. And it ended really badly.

    There is rarely a "phoenix" moment for coaches staying with the same team. The only one that comes to mind is Sean Payton in NO.

    I'm not saying they should fire McDermott but if this has peaked it's likely that it won't be turned around by him.

  2. Our 4 wins are against teams with the following ranks defensively(using DVOA): Raiders (23rd), Commanders (22nd), Dolphins (27th), Giants (28th - and the offense looked terrible in this game).

    3 losses are against teams with these rankings defensively: Jets (12th), Jaguars (8th), Patriots (14th).

    We're almost halfway through the season. At this point, objectively, I don't think you can make a realistic argument for them beating a team with a top 15 defense the rest of the season (unless something drastic changes on the offensive side).

    So that would look like this with the remaining schedule (with D rankings):

    Tampa (10th) - L

    @Cincy (20th) - W

    Denver (32nd) - W

    NYJ (12th) - L

    @Philly (13th) - L

    @KC (9th) - L

    Dallas (4th) - L

    @Chargers (26th) - W

    NE (14th) - L

    @Miami (27th) - W

    Thats 4 Ws for the rest of the year and 1 of the games is at Cincy (which I'm not confident they'd win), at the Chargers (who have a top 10 offense which will be a challenge for our D), and at Miami (again - our D is a shell of what it was to start the year).

    The next 4 games are basically gonna determine our season and are all "winnable" IMO. They "should" win 3/4 based on the talent level and Cincy is playing better but not the team they were last year. But this can go south in a hurry if the offense doesn't find itself fast.

    But that’s not his strength. There was a play yesterday when the Pats come out showing one thing and then changed that mid snap count. The Bills got a delay of game penalty because Josh got confused. Josh Allen cannot be Payton Manning or even Joe Burrow. Those guys had elite level coaching from when they were in diapers. He’s Brett Favre who can run. Let him play that way.

    I agree. The offense needs to be a bit more structured and deliberate in its play design and scheming and then adding those 2nd chance creation plays on top of it. Favre played his whole career in a highly structured west coast offense and then his playmaking was an added bonus.

    Allen has been asked for years to stop hurdling players and taking defenders head on.

    The ask is for him to be smarter. Get down, get out of bounds. Similar to a peak Russ or current Mahomes.

    If anything Josh doesn’t have a good feel for that part of his game. It is like he only knows how to truck a LB or make an errant throw with nothing but green grass in front of him.

    Kurt Warner was flamed for years for doing Allen film reviews that was basically “just because he can, doesn’t mean he should” when it came to his decision making. He was right. Sometimes Allen isn’t a great decision maker.

    Edit: He just had 7 runs for 2. Something yards per carry. He’s not running the ball well either.

    This right here! No one was asking him to stop running altogether! Just stop hurdling people 5 yards from the 1st down marker or lowering your throwing shoulder into LBers on 1st and 2nd down. Just be smart about it.

    I can definitely buy into some of the work ethic stuff.  Working on your throwing motion and training with QB gurus is not the same as studying film and learning the details of your offense.  Part of the appeal of the Erhardt-Perkins offense is the dual concepts in one play aspect based on the coverage that you are getting (i.e. simplistically having a man beater on one side and a zone beater on the other although it can get much more complex than that), but it really requires knowing where you are supposed to go with the ball and that means diagnosing coverages needs to be one of the QBs top strengths.

    I’ll forever hold the grudge until McClap delivers us a Lombardi which btw, he never will.

    Daboll should be our HC. Should’ve been hired on the tarmac in KC after 13 seconds.The offense wouldn’t be in the mess it’s in right now I can tell you that.

    Offense had PLENTY of stinkers in Daboll's time as the OC even in the "holy grail" 2020 season that everyone is pining for.

    4 game stretch in 2020 - Titans, Jets, Chiefs, NE where the offense couldn't do anything.

    Baltimore playoff game where they refused to run at all in the 1st half

    1st half of the KC championship game where they couldn't do anything

    2021

    Game 1 - Steelers - no answer/adjustment to their defense

    Game 2 - Dolphins - offense was trash in this game

    Game 9 - Jags 9-6 game - no answer or adjustments to how they were being played.

    Game 11 - Colts - offense sucked (so did the whole team)

    Game 15 - Panthers - offense struggled

    Game 17 - Falcons - offense was terrible

    Game 18 - Jets - offense wasn't good again.

    The 2021 playoff run glosses over SO MUCH struggling that this offense went through under Daboll.  Even in the KC :13 sec game, the offense had 14 points with 2 minutes left in the 3rd Q.

    He did a great job with the 2022 Giants but I think a bunch of that was catching people off guard by using designed runs for Daniel Jones.  Thats also what he did alot of here when his O started to struggle.  Its just not a sustainable way to develop an offense IMO.

    This seems like much more than difference of opinion in terms of coaching philosophy.

    I recall after 2020 it seemed like McDermott was annoyed that Daboll didn't get a head coaching job. It raised a red flag for me at that time. It seemed like he was ready to move on.

    Other thoughts that come to mind...

    Perhaps Daboll was angry with McDermott over 13 seconds. Someone on X said there were rumors that Daboll let McDermott have it afterwards, which would make sense given that Daboll had just overseen a legendary offensive performance and then McDermott ruined it, robbing Daboll of the chance to win a Super Bowl for his hometown team and for Josh on his way out.

    I'm pretty sure Daboll was offered the Chargers job after the 2020 season and he didn't take it because he had reservations about Chargers ownership (this wasn't reported but I trust who I heard it from). So I could definitely buy into the idea that McD was ready to move on especially considering how much they seemed to clash in the following season.

  7. Realistic trade options:

    LB/S Shaq Thompson CAR - just redid his deal and I'd bet part of the discussion was finding him a good spot if the team tanked the season (which they have so far). Very similar style player to Milano.

    CB Jaylon Johnson CHI - under the radar guy they will be a FA after this year. Talk of an extension with bears over the summer so they might be trying to keep him but it hasn't happened yet.

    Of all the trade suggestions,  this one makes the most sense. Let Surtain and Dane be your guys until Benford returns.  Clearly we saw why Elam's days might be numbered.

    Highly doubt that DEN trades Surtain. I also question whether this defensive scheme requires a CB making almost $30M/yr which is what it will take to sign him.

    I mean if his story from the article is completely accurate and he was taking a leak, and she was BSing her friends when she went back inside, then all he really did was be a name in the general area.

    I think the insinuation is that he still had sex with her, only the context is way different than her story of being dragged to the side of the house and forced into a sexual situation.  She's also 17 (or was at the time), although she was lying about her age at the party (apparently this also is on video), which is problematic as far as PR is concerned.

    I think if he had had no interaction with this woman then the Bills likely do not cut him as he would have been quickly removed from the criminal investigation.  The issue always was that he couldn't remove himself from being investigated and the Bills cut him to be rid of the distraction.

  9. The 1 to 1 comparison isn't there but I can see what you are getting at.

    I think athletically they might actually be somewhat similar.  Kupp ran a 4.6 40 at 6'0 200lbs and while Kincaid didn't run in the draft process most have his 40 at 4.7.  Kupp obviously is a shiftier player and a more downfield threat.  Kincaid should be able to really target the middle of the field and the seam and he should be a killer on those underneath option routes.

    I wanted Simmons bad in the draft, the only reason he wasn't a top 10 pick, and probably top 5, where the character concerns from when he hit a woman while defending his sister from an attacker in high school.  I never had any long term concerns about him after hearing the details, hearing him speak about it and what he learned from that.  All his coaches and teammates glowed about him too.

    I kept saying Simmons was going to be the best DT in the draft, and so many here kept going on and on about how he was untouchable because of the high school incident.

    I wish we would have taken him.

    I thought he tore his ACL before the draft too, right?

    Are you even allowed to do that?  Decline giving the 5th year option to a player, then turn around and tag him?  Has that actually been done with any 1st round draft pick rookies?  Don't recall ever hearing or reading names??

    I'd have thought that would be something the CBA would have disallowed for the exact reasons you want to do it.

    Giants could have done it with Daniel Jones I believe.

    As of 3/17, here's the rookies in the upcoming draft that could go in the first 3 rounds.  This is based off ESPN's rankings (everyone over an 80 grade).  Looks like WR and OT are the positions of depth in the first few rounds.

    Also, yes, I will be doing the mock drafts this year.  I plan to start them in about 2 weeks.

    RB

    Bijan Robinson, Texas 93

    Definitely possible, but you don't save a lot of money. About $1.4M, but after you subtract the salary of the guy who replaces him on the roster, that's not much.

    My guess is they bring him back to compete and worry about whether or not to cut him in August.

    Cutting McKenzie saves 2.7M.

    For perspective, Connor McGovern's YR1 cap hit is 3.6M. McKenzie's role is already filled by players on the team so that savings will towards a different position or towards signing a better WR.

    Just can't see him coming back after they basically signed guys off the couch to replace him last year.

    Funny, we kept hearing for a while around here was that Vander Esche was so much better than Edmunds.

    Vander Esche signed for 2 years, $11M to stay with Dallas as no market at all developed for him.

    Edmunds signed early day 1 for 4 years, $72M.

    Seems the NFL GMs value them quite differently than TSW pundits.

    LVE had an amazing rookie season. Was voted 2nd team All-Pro.

    He was never the same after he had that nerve issue in his neck.

    I was more thinking a 2nd and 4th and saving that 1st for a Tackle

    Sure but I think the Brown trade is probably the fair value.

    Bills get Jeudy and 68th pick; Broncos get 27th pick

    And you could still sign a mid tier WR like Hardman actually.

    Broncos don't have a 1st or 2nd so I think they are pretty motivated to move up.

    Who, at #27, would be better? Most likely all of Johnston, JSN, Flowers, Addison, and possibly Hyatt are all gone. I'd take Jeudy over Addison, Hyatt, and Downs anyway tbh. He'd still have two years to prove if he's worth that 2nd contract, could be the 1B to Stef, and would be a guy who could open things up. I have no doubt that he would produce in this offense and he'll only be 24 at the beginning of the season.

    I came here to initially disagree with this take but then I looked at some of the recent WR trades that were for 1s and Jeudy actually lines up right in that range TBH.  Maybe its more like the Hollywood Brown trade where we do a swap of picks but I could see this being a better way to find that future #1 than some of the guys in this draft.

    I'd be ok with this. More than ok with it actually.

    I researched him extensively and I don’t know how anyone can say he’s not very good. The Ravens have an award for best linemen of the game. Powers won it 8 times last season.

    He’s also pretty NASTY and I like that. In college he told a reporter “I love taking a grown mans dream and just crushing it”. We need braulers like that on our team.

    Speaking of PFF, they show his blocking got BETTER after Lamar got injured and went out.

    Powers is a good player.  The Broncos are paying him 12.6 APY and the Bills just gave McGovern 7.6.  I think the Bills will try to do some work on the OL to improve but their cap situation and the $$ resources that they've already put into it suggest that it will likely be a multi-year project. Without moving on from Morse (who I think the plan is that this is his last year here based on his contract), they can't really give someone a high APY on the OL.

    Depending on what they think about Brown (and we don't really know despite what Beane has said publicly) I would guess they either sign a RT who can compete with Brown and spend a RD3-5 pick on an IOL with upside OR they are going RT with that RD1 pick. My guess is that they sign a vet RT to compete with Brown.

    McGovern's versatility now allows them to potentially go into next year and comfortably move on from Morse (who is a 10+ cap hit).  They can then move either Bates or McGovern to C (both have shown that they can play C - I actually really like Bates C personally) and have space to bring in another high APY OL with Morse now gone.

    I want young promising wrs on rookie deals. No more re-animating Beas, Smoke or Bob.

    The Bills have a somewhat complicated passing system. Alot of route options/decisions to be made based on coverage. It's why they like vet WRs and why I think McKenzie had struggles in an increased role.

    That's not to say that we won't have young WRs but the Bills will always have veteran WRs on the roster IMO especially after what happened last year.
