  1. And you can leave at any time and work for a different company, doing your same job. YOU are not under contract. When an NFL coach has a 4-year contract and gets fired after year #2, the team typically still has to pay that coach for two more years as that was the term of the contract. If they choose not to pay (they have to claim insubordination or some other egregious violation) there are lawsuits to fight. Same goes for an NFL GM.

Any contract that binds one side but not the other is a one-sided contract.

So when a player is cut (released from his contract) he cannot play for another team? You make it sound as if the player has nowhere to go, as if he can no longer be a football player. The only thing I see when a team cuts a player before his contract is fulfilled, is that he did not live up to thier (team) expectations. He is free to pursue his career somewhere else.

  2. This is like the chicken or the egg. I think they need to raise prices so they could offer better pay to players who know how to win games. I think if they bite the bullet and raise ticket prices they may suffer in the short run but make up for it later down the road. I have been a season ticket holder for six years now and I would much rather pay $10 -$20 more per seat than waste my time seeing a crappy team on the cheap.

  3. Wow...that is about what I can muster reading about this story.

The dude called his coach out on TWITTER...when will athletes just cancel their accounts? Every week somebody pops off and gets in trouble on Twitter. When you are playing a game and getting that kind of scratch to do it...just stay off of Twitter, and maybe cancel your Facebook and MySpace while you are at it.

As far as the "f" word goes...give me a freaking break. We are so desensitized as a culture it is unbelievable. The onslaught of media is everywhere, so if you are a parent, and you let your child think Larry Johnson is really a role model, then please give your children up for adoption. Think about what kind of mindset you have to have to play pro football... You probably are a little aggressive (TE being the exception) and pretty competitive. Nice guy is generally not a prerequisite for an athlete to be a fan favorite...yeah, it helps, but it is a performance based business, and to compete with the best players in the world, you probably have a little bit of an edge.

I am not excusing his use of the slur...as an athlete you need to realize that your contract is because you can perform better than most, but it is also so high because you are a public attraction. You need to use discretion, and LJ did not. Fine, suspension, whatever, is appropriate. My point is you can turn on prime time TV and see all the sex and violence you want...shows about grotesque murders, adultery, basically the less ethical the better... LJ, frustrated calls his coach a fag, out of frustration with his laughingstock of a team and obvious fading personal skills, and it hurt somebody? If you are hurt by that, I feel you are setting a double standard. Our children are subjected to the everything at such a young age and there are real issues that nobody pays attention to, but they jump on LJ for saying the "f" word... I am pretty sure if you go to any playground during any recess in any gradeschool in the country you will hear a lot worse.

If you are hurt, and would take the time to contact the league office and complain, to make sure LJ "gets what he deserves" are you any better? This guy didn't call his coach a fag because he really thinks his coach is a homosexual, and because he was hoping to step on the hornets nest and get the gay community fired up. The true crime would be making it your mission to ruin this talented athletes career, and cause him possible financial duress (I know he has made a pile of money, but what is he going to do when it's done, and he donated his body to the making football fans cheer?) over a Tweet that had nothing to do with his sexuality, but rather just and undereducated member of society voicing his displeasure with his employers ineffectiveness... look in the mirror and ask who is the bigger jackass. His attack was nothing personal against homosexuals, while unfortunate, it was done out of ignorance. The subsequent crucifixion would be done with vengeance.

So when you are gasping about the harm he has done to the children, remember that you are showing them that when you try to nail him to the cross for it. I remember something like two wrongs don't make a right, and although the comments were a horrible decision, remember don't educate, forgive, or overlook a person of limited intelligences inability to always make the best decision...just go all teeth and claws, drag in the muck and the mire by giving it constant media attention. I can already see Bob Ley doing an Between the Lines...tsk tsk LJ. Always go for the jugular, because to err is human but to completely blow the situation out of proportion, take offense to something that had nothing to do with you, and then ruin the perpetrator's life is divine....have a blessed day.

I could not have said it any better.

  4. Can't speak for his father but my father thinks we aren't paying Dockery ANYTHING this year.

I was responding to his father’s comment "you get what you pay for". My point was we PAID Dockery a boat load of money and he did not produce. Paying a lot for a player does not mean you are getting a great player, it just means you paid a lot.

My feeling is Peter’s deserves a pay increase but not the highest paid LT in the NFL. He should get a 9–10 mil per year contract because he has proven himself in the past and he is still young enough to improve.

  5. Again, a good alternative. But, unlike you and me, he didn't have time to construct the perfect answer, and as you note, probably couldn't do it if he had the time. He gave a fairly bland, and positive, answer to a question. That's the extent of it. It really is indicative of nothing else.

I agree, listen to any player talk and all you hear is what their coaches say to them during the week. They just regurgitate all the clichés they hear during the work week. The problem is we do not have coaches who can inspire excellence from the players we have.

  6. I dont buy any argument for a system QB. I dont think that they exist. Isnt the point of the QB to execute the system he is in? So if its a good system the QB cant get any credit?

I would define a great QB as someone who carriers their team and without them the team will not succeed. A great system is one where you can plug a competent player in and the result will be the same. Hence Tommy boy is more a product of the system and not the great QB that everyone is led to believe. Where would the Colts be without Manning?

  7. Tell me what he should have said, then.

In all seriousness, I think he could have said something to the effect of " I'm glad to see Ralph Wilson decided to retain coach Jauron for continuity sake, but as an organization we have under performed and will have to live up to our potential next season". This way he is not throwing his coach under the bus but letting the fans know that everyone is accountable himself included and that last year is not indicative of future performance.

P.S. I don't actually believe any player on the Bills team is capable of putting together a comprehensive thought like stated above but it is nice to dream.

  8. Newsflash.....Brady has won 3 SBs and Manning one. Manning has also had Pro Bowl talent around him for a decade.....not so with Brady until last year.

Look how his WRs have done going elsewhere......Deion Branch has really flourished elsewhere. Same with David Givens and Patton. Well, maybe not. Maybe it was Brady who made them better.

I know people on this board do not like him but face it he is the best QB of this generation. Manning is very good but has tended to lay eggs in big games. I really like PM as well he just has not accomplished as much as TB.

TB won a super bowl with no pro bowl WR, no PB TE and Antowain Smith as his RB.

The first year he does not play they do not make the playoffs. They were still good but they go 15-1 or 16-0 with him. He is that good!!

Your reasons for why Tommy boy is the greatest QB of this generation is the reason why I say it is the system. His first two super bowl wins where due in large part to the Pats* defense and a great offensive line. Now the defense and O line are getting older and not so great (look at last years win by the Giants). The fact that Branch, Givens and Patton did not produce for other teams is because of the system they were in, it helped them become better players. Manning has great players around him but has never had a great defensive unit. He has always had to out score the other team. Plus the Colts are in the playoffs this year and the Pats* are not. So who is to say the Colts (Manning) does not win another Super bowl.

  9. It is, but its the league's fault. They should have seen it coming when they went with these stupid four team divisions. Just wait, sooner or later, some team will win their division at 7-9 or 6-10. All hell is going to break loose when that happens.

What happens if the chargers (who made the playoffs with an 8-8 record) go on to the super bowl? Does that mean they do not deserve to be there because they won their division with an 8-8 record? The rules are set in place before the season starts and the owners vote on the rules so everything is fair. If you do not deserve to be in the playoffs you will lose in the first round. If not then that team is better than their record indicates.

  10. so be it Lori.....but a team with a 11-5 record needs to be in the playoffs.....that AFC west has costed the NFL.

You sound like Dick Jauron. Why must they be in the playoffs? What about all the other years where teams sat at home because they couldn't win their division but a Seattle or Chicago or Minnesota goes to the playoffs with a bad record.

  11. I agree though, as much as I hate the Patriots they should be in the playoffs not the Chargers. Imagine if Buffalo was the 11-5 teams, best season is YEARS!!!!!!!!! and you still dont get to the playoffs.........trust me you all would be going nuts including myself! You know the Patriots deserve to go more then San Diego! Its just too hard for you to say it. When the shoe is on the other foot, it would feel a little different.

Didn't Chargers already beat the Pats*? Also I don't think we have to worry about Buffalo being 11-5 anytime soon.

  12. What's the average salary of the top five QBs in the league? When does Brady's contract run out? Are they willing to franchise Cassell for more than one year? Like I said, for one year or not, that's a LOT of coin tied up in the QB position.

    GO BILLS!!!

They would have to pay Cassel 12 mil. to franchise him. That would be more than Brady makes (10 mil)

  13. Good to see that the conspiracy theories are alive and well.

I agree. I hate the Pats* more than the next guy but I think that touchdown was just a bad call by the officials. The Ravens can still win out and make the playoffs. If you want to worry about something look at yesterdays game and think to yourself what might be if Buffalo beat the Jests. It would have moved the Pats* & Miami into a first place tie. And Buffalo can still steal glory from the Pats* by beating them in their last home game.

  14. People talk as though the end of the world will come about if the auto industry goes bankrupt. If the big three file for chapter 11 their union contracts will be broken and they can operate more efficiently and produce cars for less and compete with the foreign car manufactures. All the talk about ancillary job’s being lost if the big three go bankrupt or chapter 7 (liquidation) is just ridiculous. Are you going to stop buying cars if Ford, GM and Chrysler aren’t around? I don’t think so, which means you will buy from Honda, Toyota, BMW, Mercedes, etc. All those companies have manufacturing plants in the USA and employ American workers (just not at the prohibitive wage rates that the union wants). All the excess rubber, glass, steel that was produced for American car manufactures will now be sold to foreign car manufactures. There will be jobs lost, but most will be in areas that had bloated cost structures or dealerships that could not sell enough cars to support their existence. The people who will suffer the most will be union workers who were being paid wages and benefits beyond their technical skill as well as retired auto workers. Do you really think an auto worker should make more than a doctor? Look at the average yearly income of an auto worker and that of a general practitioner (the ones you bring your kids to when they have an ear ach, or a high fever). How much education does it take to push a button on a machine or put a screw in some sheet metal? Compare that with four years of college, four years of medical school and then 2-3 years of internship which pays less than a McDonald’s worker. My heart does not bleed for the union workers but I do feel bad for the retired auto workers who were promised X amount of money when they retired and may now have to live on half that amount if the auto companies go out of business. A recession is a hard time for everybody but you find a way to get through it and I don’t think having the government (our tax dollars) bail out bloated inefficient businesses is the way to go.
