It was a pretty big helmet to helmet hit.

    I've seen a lot worse.

It was a hard hit for sure.

He hits Coleman before his feet even come to the turf.  Well timed, not late.

His shoulder pads are at the ball, likely trying to knock it loose.

Result was the top of his helmet is in the head and neck area, which is a penalty on a defenseless receiver.

SUMMARY: Hard hit on the ball, resulted in a justified penalty, a broken wrist or whatever, and helped the Bills to victory.

I've been trying to think of a way to phrase my concern and "why do they keep banking on improvement on offense but replacement on defense?" is just perfect.

I don't know about "keep banking" (as in year after year), but for this year it makes sense.  Their offense was relatively young In 2024, they set the franchise record for points scored were top 10 in both rushing and passing.  The average age of their starters was about 26 years old.  Their defense was not as effective and was on average older, around 28.  So they are hoping for improvement of their effective and relatively young players on offense, and banking on a few replacement players to lift the defense a notch.  This team was a whisker from going to the Superbowl last year, let's hope the plan works.

  3. The comp pick the Cowboys will now get instead of the Bills in two years mostly offsets the draft picks involved with the trade.  So Bills must be confident that they can find an equivalent player or better for the $2.7M that they would have paid Elam.  It's unfortunate the pick did not work out.

That's what I thought too.  But apparently we will not be entitled to a comp pick if he signs elsewhere.  It has something to do with the status of his contract.  I don't know the details, but it is what I heard on the radio this morning.

Bean 09:08.  There is potential to get a comp pick.

I think comp picks are limited to 5th rounders for non QBs with 10+ years.  Cooper was drafted in 2015, so this is his 10th year.

Just as bad as the missed kicks were, was his last kickoff with 3 minutes left.  He kicked off from the 50 (NYJ personal foul on previous play) and presumably the Bills wanted him to kick it to the 5 yard line or so, so they could pin them back deep.  He kicked it 5 yards into the end zone.  Bass was holding his head in disgust and Mcdermott was screaming at him (could see this in the stadium).

There is no real advantage to kick a high ball to the 5.  The kick coverage still starts at the 40 yard line and they need to wait for the ball to bounce or be caught regardless of where it's kicked from. So perhaps try a lower kick that bounces in the landing zone.  It's a shorter kick so it's likely easier to execute.

a third round draft pick would have been here for four years and inexpensive.  They traded the opportunity to draft a young player to fit in with a young team going forward for half a season.

The Bills may recoup a 5th round comp pick if he leaves as a free agent next year to a reasonable contract. (Shakir, Shorter, Van Pringle where recent 5th rounders).

C’mon.  I wasn’t the biggest Gabe fan either, but he’d immediately be our #2 WR and be an upgrade over Hollins and MVS.  And long term, him, Coleman and Shakir ain’t a bad WR room.

Gabe is a good blocker, but Hollins is as good and probably better.  As a WR, Gabe is a drive killer mainly due to his inability to adjust during routes - leading to incompletions or interceptions that other WRs make easy catches on.  Bills offense started clicking right when Gabe got hurt last year.

  8. In order of benefit

    1. TD

    2. Pick up 1st down

    3. FG

    4. Punt inside 20 or INT inside 20

    5. Punt for a touchback or INT for a touchback

    6. Incomplete pass

    7. Sack or TFL less than 8 yards

    8. Missed FG

    9. 10 yard sack

    10. Turn over returned past the 42 yard line or for a TD

Analytics says go for it.  That's a good decision.  They didn't make the play, which happens.  The outcome was not what they wanted, but it could have been worse.  It turned out better than a missed FG.

  9. Fields could be amazing with this current Dolphins team.  Compared to Tua, he has a better arm, ability to run, ability to bye time, and better ability to throw on the run. Tua's thing is that he hits on those 2.2s throws that go 15 yards down the hash marks to Hill.  But that seems like an overall play design thing, not skillset that is specific to Tua.  Tua has also been very accurate on the deep throws to a wide open Hill.  Apparently, that's a skillset that not every QB has.  eh-hmmm.

Diggs contract is hefty and runs through the next three seasons.  The Bills would take a big cap hit if he is gone before the 2027 season.

If cut after the 2024 season, there would be a cap savings of around $5M.  Depending on how 2024 goes, that could happen.

Why does Cook get benched for fumbling but Davis doesn't for dropping the ball into the safety's hands

Not specifically defending Davis, but drops happen with every WR.  In one case a player has possession of the ball and has it taken away.  In the other case, possession was not established.  Ideally professional receivers would catch everything that hits there hands.  I don't know why that doesn't happen.  Also, isn't Davis the player in possession of the incriminating photos?

A lot of people dislike my garbage time yards post without a rebuttal. You know what that means right?

When I think of garbage time, it is for the offense when your team is DOWN by 30 points.  The defense is playing prevent and allowing easy completions - often to the running backs.  Stats are easier to rack up.  When you are UP and you run the clock with 8 minute drives when the defense knows what's coming, that is PRIME TIME, not garbage time.

That not withstanding, we know the kind of player Cook is and his limitations.  I'm glad we have him.
