  1. Owens finished 2008 with fewer catches (69) and yards (1,052) than any other season this decade. Owens had the NFL's second-highest number of dropped passes with 33, according to New Orleans coach Sean Payton. Even when Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo was healthy, Owens began showing his age. Owens, who turned 35 last December, rarely flashed the ability to single-handedly take over a game like in the past.

  2. Lawrence Taylor will be on Dancing with the Stars and the blurb about him is:

"Taylor is widely considered the best defensive player in the history of the National Football League"

That got me thinking...who was better, Bruce Smith or Lawrence Taylor? I know both play different positions, but both changed the way teams had to gameplan around them, and usually were double or even triple teamed to no avail. Just would like some other thoughts...of course being a homer I will say I think Bruce was better because he a more complete player against the run and rushed the passer from a disadvantageous position of a 3-4 DE versus Taylor who rushed the passer from the "sacking" position of OLB in the 3-4...

Obviously both were tremendous players, but my vote goes to Bruce...

Read the book Blind Side-Evolution of the Game, Michael Lewis. The left tackle as we know it today was created because of the the chaos that LT created.

  3. Cassel's week to week improvement had more to do with facing poor defenses, if not the same poor defenses, than with him suddenly getting it after 4 years in the same offensive system. When he faced a real defense like the Steelers, and even against the Seahawks, his numbers were less than impressive. And if you're going to pay $14M a year for a guy, you want him to be able to play well against even good defenses.

He will not get 14 million but he will get between 8-10 AAV on a 5-6 year deal. The union can't do anything about it.

  4. It all depends on what contract numbers Cassel is seeking/has to seek. Since he's been designated a franchise player and the NFLPA has a vested interest in seeing the tag continue to increase, I can't see them allowing anything but a contract averaging at least the franchise tag tender (as has been the case all along). If that holds true, I cannot see any team offering him almost $14.7M a year. The guy can't throw deep and routinely threw behind receivers, while getting sacked a ton behind the exact same O-line that protected Brady so well last year. And when big games came around, he came up small.

He has not played since HS. What scouts are looking at is his improvement week to week in the NFL. He killed Miami's D where Trent couldn't do anything against them. Cassell's line: 30 43 415 69.8 64 3 1 114.0

    Trent's line against Miami: 21 35 227 60.0 33 0 1 67.2

  5. Methinks he called their bluff, i.e., he knows he's a system QB who's not worth anything near this amount--not quite sure what they do now, but can't say that it bothers me. Have fun, Patsies*......

The Pats will have fun when they get a min. of a 1st and 3 rd round picks. You can talk all you want about a system QB but the fact is he had a very good year. It's his first year playing and he progressed w. each game. He had a better statistical year than the ROY Matt Ryan. 5th in TD passes in the AFC

    Cassell 327 516 63.4 3693 7.16 76 21 4.1 11 2.1 47.0 219 89.4

    Ryan 265 434 61.1 3440 7.93 70 16 3.7 11 2.5 17.0 104 87.7

  6. Again, considering the fact that no player has ever signed a deal averaging less than his franchise number, I'd say that the NFLPA does have a lot of power over this. Not to mention that agents don't want prospective clients to hear that they've negotiated below-tag contracts. It's career suicide either way.

But okay, what would be reasonable? $12M a year? Would you still pay Cassel that amount based on his pedestrian numbers last year? Would you pay even $10M a year?

I say it will 10-11 Million AAV

  7. This is so ridiculous, there's no point in even continuing to argue anymore.

Why do you keep saying Cassel is a "sure thing?" If you mean "able to beat bad defenses," then yes, he's a "sure thing" in that respect. But outside of that, he's far from a sure thing, and on the contrary, his performance against Pittsburgh after 10 full starts and almost 11 full games is troublesome. That is, for a "stud" QB who is allegedly worth $14M a year.

The NFLPA can't do anything about it? LOL! You're either naive or a homer.

One cautionary note is the NFLPA is not the MLBPA. They do not hold nearly as much power. As long as the deal is reasonable they will be ok with it. The deal does not have to average 14.5 million a year.

  8. Yes, lets compare stats between Ryan and Cassel. I guess we live in the make believe world where newengland* and Atlanta are similar franchises and each QB has the same great supporting cast.

As for cassel, lets see them franchise him. Because as soon as he signs the tender, they're on the hook paying him 14 million. At that point he becomes untradeable.

Hey genius. They rip up the tender and the team that trades for him signs him to a new deal. This deal is worked out before a trade happens. Now of course Matt Cassell has to agree to the deal but he won't get 14 million a year for 5 years. He will probably get in the neighborhood of $50-55 million for 5 years.

  9. Here are the stat lines of two young and impressive first time NFL starters last year.

Stats Comp Att Pct Att/G Yds Avg Yds/G TD Int 1st 1st% Lng 20+ 40+ Sck Rate

    QB1 265 434 61.1 27.1 3,440 7.9 215.0 16 11 157 36.2 70T 45 9 17 87.7

    QB2 327 516 63.4 32.2 3,693 7.2 230.8 21 11 182 35.3 76T 37 6 47 89.4

The QB1 line belongs to the NFL's rookie of the year. A QB that every QB needy team in the NFL would thankfully give up their next 2 or 3 first round picks for if given the opportunity.

The QB2 line belongs to the QB who, until he was thrust into action in game 1 of last year, had not taken a starting snap in a football game since he was in high school.

Answer this for me if you would. Would you call QB1 - Matt Ryan - an average QB? Think about your answer with the knowledge that QB2 - Matt Cassel - had better/comparable stats than Ryan did last year. And then asked yourself how hot a commodity do you think a Matt Ryan type player would be if he were available this offseason!

Further, on the subject of value. Cassel's value exists at the intersection of the two most horrifying financial realities of the NFL game. One is that your entire annual investment in a team and a coaching staff is useless without a good quarterback. The other is that the easiest way to cripple a franchise for five or six years is to make a massive investment in a young quarterback who can't play and doesn't pan out. Look no further than this franchise since Jimbo retired and the countless scores of other NFL franchises that have toiled in mediocrity because they haven't been able to find even a competent starting QB.

A good young quarterback just entering his prime is the most valuable commodity there is in this sport. Even going beyond the on-the-field value, a guy like Cassel who has proven that he can be a leader in the locker room and handle the enormous public relations responsibilities inherent in the job is an invaluable commodity.

Now tell me if you are team desperate for such a player what QB are you going to pin your franchises hopes on? One of the old, recycled QB's that will become available, a college junior who's being compared to Matt Hasselbeck and who's staring at being the 1st overall pick come April, or the guy who posted better QB stats than the leagues rookie of the year did ?

Case closed prosecutor and I'm being serious. The guy proved he is a starter in the NFL and with experience can only improve.

  10. Don't ya like how other teams react if they lose a GM or scouting director, they replace them with another top quality guy.Unlike the Buffalo Bills that would prefer to NOT have a top NFL talent evaluator in a front office position. The Dolphins have VP Bill Parcells and now the Patriots have ex Titan GM Floyd Reese. You would think the Bills would have hired Reese or someone like him to fill that vacant GM position. The Bills get Jauron

Reese happy to be back where he belongs

Just over one week ago, Patriots head coach Bill Belichick met with ESPN analyst Floyd Reese.

Their meetings led to a multi-year contract that was signed Monday, making Reese the Patriots’ senior adviser, helping to fill the void that Scott Pioli created when he took the Chiefs general manager’s job.

Now Reese and his family are planning to move to Foxborough, Mass., so he can jump right into work with next month’s scouting combine and free agency approaching.

“The opportunities most of the time are in areas or with teams that are broken, unable to win, don’t have quarterbacks, don’t have backing, maybe have issues with stadiums or facilities, fan support, whatever it may be,” Reese said Tuesday. “This opportunity is so at the opposite end of the spectrum from all of that.

“This is indeed a thrill because none of those things are broken. They’re all in very good shape. It’s going to be my role to come in and help however I can.”

One of Reese’s jobs will be addressing the Matt Cassel situation. He is scheduled to be an unrestricted free agent and New England is expected to slap its franchise tag on him.

Previously, Reese might have assessed the Patriots’ situation on ESPN. Now he will do it for Belichick.

“It will be interesting and I’m sure there will be a lot of discussion on it,” Reese said. “I’ve always been one of those who has said that if you think you have two quarterbacks you probably don’t have one.

“But this is a situation where having two quarterbacks may very well be true. That will be something that we’ll have to sit down and work out and I’m sure there will be a lot of discussion back and forth.”

Yet ultimately, Reese is happy to be off the air and back in the game.

“It’s interesting because working for ESPN, the ESPN people were very good to me,” Reese said. “But when you would get away with a former player or someone involved with the NFL, you’d say that the people [at ESPN] were very nice and that they treat you great, but then you would always finish with the line, ‘but, it’s not the NFL.’

“I’ve spent my entire adult life in the NFL. I started coaching in the NFL when I was 24. I have done everything and this is my life. If there’s anything I do know, it’s the NFL. The ability to get back and get back in this position is a thrill.”

This is why they are a great organization. It is a good question to ponder why didn't the Bill's bring him on?

  11. I was wrong. He's second in sacks taken, 4th in INTs thrown, just about bottom 10 worst in completion %.... He's middle of the pack in all other stats.

Rothlisberger is a good QB. I like him. If I was a Steeler fan, I'd have no complaints. But it's amazing what the #1 defense will do for your credibility when your numbers aren't that good. If Big Ben played for Buffalo, he'd have been run out of town a long time ago.

He is not a pocket passer and is always holding the ball which in turn causes all the sacks and completely changes field position but w. that defense he can get away w. it. He would not get away w. that in Buffalo.

  12. Maybe he was fired because other than winning a Super Bowl with Dungy's team handed to him, he coached an up and down, medicore team.

Funny how his team started off good and crashed and burned down the stretch. That got him fired, unlike our HC.

That was not Dungy's team. Yse he was the coach but Rich McKay picked the players. Dungy was fired because he could not take the team to the next level. Gruden did his job and coached them to a SB win.

  13. Wow....Willis the retard makes another fine post to the Wall....

It's amazing he has time to do it considering he's got to fellate Brady every time he rings a bell.

Super Bowls won by Mannings in the last 3 years - 2

won by Brady in the last 3 years (including a year he had the most stacked team ever) - 0

You must have a great job. Your command and appropriate use of the English language is above reproach. Especially your use of the word retard. BTW- Where did you go to school?
