The only problem I had was trading for him at all. He's just not that good, he made a play today and good for him.

I just disliked the trade to begin with.

I agree about the trade. But even then, you just gave up a solid DB. Shouldn't you go ahead and try to utilize the guy to the utmost? This WR coach and OC suck. Both need to go. I also wouldn't mind a complete offensive side house cleaning.

    Also check out Virgil's summary:

I completely agree on points 8) and 9).

Wait a minute. Now I get it. I did a little research and I see where your coming from and I totally agree. If we add his 2 receptions for 33 yards this year plus the 60 yard punt return he had today wed be on the road to 19-0. Excellent post OP. If the pizza delivery job doesnt work out you should really consider a career as an NFL GM. Heck. You couldnt do any worse any GM weve had the past 17 years.

Man, my bad. Most of the people on this board would have been able to get at what I meant. But for those unable to connect the dots…let me help.

This staff is throwing stuff at the wall at hopes it sticks. The only thing they’re sure of is that they don’t want the guys they didn’t draft to remain in Buffalo. Even if they are talented. I’m pretty sure Tyrod, as much as he is a fit for this team right now, is gone by next season. I honestly don’t have of a problem with that as long as they have a better option in the wings. But I’m also pretty sure, this administration, will look for all kinds of excuses to ship out McCoy as well.

Conversely, if they drafted or brought a guy in either while here or in Carolina, the guy gets more than the benefit of the doubt until he craps the bed. Take Zay Jones and Mike Tolbert. They used the same “process” to ship out:

    Watkins

    Woods

    Gillislee

    Gimore

    Dareus

    Williams (Denver, now Saints)

They’re also using the same thought process on Tyrod (which is TT isn’t productive so we need someone else in there). The truth is TT isn’t productive in *this* system. Dennison should be coaching for his life. Today’s win shouldn’t change any of that. Not having Miller and Reilly in there is also criminal.

But in either case, regardless of whether they bring someone in or let them go, they are unable to maximize the guy’s potential.

Kaelin Clay is an example of that. He was signed by Beane while he was in Carolina. So they traded Kevon Seymour, a solid DB for Clay. That should have never happened. All the while having Brandon Reilly in the wings. But while they had Clay they were unable to utilize him in an optimal/productive way. We can argue as to how productive he’s been at Carolina. But there is little doubt that the Panthers staff has gotten more out of him than our staff.

So we gave up a DB and lost a WR, maybe a marginally productive one, but it’s still dumb.

The “Process” should look at how the systems they’ve installed are not being productive or getting the most of the players. Both on offense and defense. Of the players shipped out, I would say the Gilmore thing was a good move. I’m also glad Dareus isn’t here. I think that was a win-win for both sides.

But everyone else has been fairly productive elsewhere or in Buffalo. This administration is more interested in scapegoating the players they did not personally coach, sign or draft. They undervalue those players and overvalue the ones with which they have a personal history.

But in spite of that they have not gotten what they can out of the players that they do have on the team.

Not sure what you are talking about? I’m on board with drafting a guy. When people pretend that Tyrod isn’t (by miles) the best QB of the drought I challenge them. If we don’t think that he is good enough that is fine. When someone pretends that he is “just like” Bledsoe or Losman or EJ it needs to be defended. It’s not the case. He’s a pretty good NFL starter. There is no reason to pretend anything else.

He has 63 TDS and 20 turnovers. He’s won .538% of his games with a bad team. We don’t need to think that he is the answer but he deserves a lot more respect and appreciation than he gets from the fan base.

    See my point...

Exactly. Also people throw around his stats at about .500 QB. That statistic is meaningless without context. That's akin of the p-value in science and engineering. That win/loss ratio is useless without an index measuring the talent and coaching around him. The QBR doesn't even come close.

I am good with us moving on from TT. I just want proof that we've maximized and optimized what we can do *with* him before reproducing the same bad team, design, infrastructure and scheme with a top tier QB.

  4. This is why we can't have nice things. No one will ever say Tyrod is the second coming of Jim Kelly. But the guy has been a total pro and is a great team mate. If they built a system around him, you know the way you would around a franchise QB, he would be a very serviceable QB. Then we can ride that horse until something better shows up.

Instead we're building schemes and on the field infrastructure for players we generally don't have. Right now all the coaching staffs the last few years have done is shoe horn him into systems that they're infatuated with. And dealing away some of his weapons and abandoning blocking schemes that play to his strengths. I wish we had Chan Gailey as his OC/QB coach.

Whatever you might say,  Zay Jones is not a number one receiver. He is a respectable number two. We didn't think Robert Woods was a serviceable number two, and yet a smart coach and a good QB are making him look like a perennial number one Pro Bowler.

This franchise when given the opportunity, makes more wrong calls than then right ones.

    We deserve what we get.

  5. I like the fact that fans don't like the roster moves. Everybody loved Whaley's moves because he was doing all the things a fan playing Madden would do. But if the message board has taught me anything it's that the fans generally don't know much.

Case in point, some fans criticize draft evaluations for using hindsight.

We didn't like some of his moves either. Hogan and Freddy amongst them. But the last laugh was with them. Cause Hogan won a SB ring and Jackson got a playoff berth/win.

One other thing...good teams don't inspire some of their best off season signings to "retire" and focus on social activism ala Bolduin. He's not a dummy. Now that Edelman is down, he wants to sign with Patriots. Funny how all that "changing the world" talk is put on hold when you think you can win.

  6. No offense, but aside from a pretty decent preseason, I don't see Jwill as a special talent. I could be wrong, but I think he is another run-of-the-mill backup running back in this league.

Banyard is no different in that he's a JAG, just that he blocks and receives better and has better breakaway speed than Jwill

None taken. I guess time will tell. The whole "what's best for the team" line is a joke given that Dareus is still on this squad. I'm not advocating cutting him. I'm just saying there's more to this story.

  7.

It's always been the way, watching the apoplectic reaction to Jwill being dumped for a faster, better receiving and blocking guy is the latest example of this age-old pastime.

Problem is Williams is a threat to score on almost every down. Of the backs we have now, besides Shady - who would you game plan for? In this league having 2 backs able to take it to the house is a luxury. But true to our form, we waive (not even trade) luxury.

I get the focus on special teams. But fire Crossman and watch this ST improve dramatically. He has done nothing here and did nothing in Detroit. He's a conservative coach. That doesn't fit the make up of his players.

  8. You know, i don't like the JWill cut. If this was a one off that'd be one thing. But this is within a larger context of questionable roster moves. The Watkins move I can almost justify given his durability issues. But honestly you don't get better by losing talented players and keeping mediocre ones. Fine if you say they're doing this to better the team. But how do you justify Ducasse > Williams > Darby? Systems and "culture" are winning over actual raw or developing talent.

This is a historical problem in Buffalo. The players know it. The fans know it. We're not complete idiots.

I really liked it when McDermott was the guy (One voice) in charge. I think Beane is overthinking this. I liked the hire. But he is running amok with this roster management BS.

    God, I miss Wade Phillips...
