  1. Kyle Orton

Not sure if he'd be a mid priced FA. I'm thinking probably more high priced since he's really the only good FA QB available. I'd also consider Tavaris Jackson. I didn't see him on your list and would take him way over Jason Campbell. I wouldn't take him if he offered to play for free. With Kyle Orton and better OLIne and we're playoff bound next year.

I know he's not the young franchise QB that will lead us to multiple SB wins. But since none of those are out there, let's try to get a guy who can help us get our first winning season in 6 years.

Don't know too much about the other guys.

  2. I really have no idea what the Bills are doing in regards to finding a coach and neither does anyone else. Just because they haven't come out publicly saying much doesn't mean they're not doing much. In the age of cell phones and text messages and email and video conferencing, they could be talking to a lot of people with no one knowing. Just because no ones seen anyone at the airport doesn't necessarily mean they aren't talking to anyone.

  3. Now the worse case scenario is that we trade for Tavaris Jackson...

Tavaris is a FA. We don't need to trade for him. Just sign him. I think he might be good. Last year in 9 games he had 9 TDs and 2 picks. 59.1% complete. I'd at least like for us to bring him in and let him compete for the starting job if we can't get McNabb or Orton. No way Brohm or Trent or a rookie starts if I have anything to say about it.

  4. Is taking a 4-12 team to a 5-11 season riddled with blowouts really considered an 'improvement'??

5 wins is better than 4 no matter how you slice it. You are what you're record says you are. If your records better, yeah you're better.

  5. Good question. He came into the Seattle job with a 26-22 record. Inherited a 4-12 team and actually improved them to 5-11. They got blown out a lot and plain looked bad alot. Then he got a raw deal from Seattle and canned after one season. The guy would definitely have a chip on his shoulder and something to prove. Did lead Atlanta to NFC Championship game in 2004.

Kindof have mixed feelings about the guy. Loves Seattle and wants to live the rest of his life here or so he says. He'd be worth an interview I'd think given the current circumstances.

He would be getting a step up in talent in Buffalo. Except QB that is.

  7. That being said, I think the right choice should be Brian Schottenheimer. I understand we all want someone with head coaching experience. But think about this, how many NFL head coaches, successful or otherwise, have returned to the league and have been successful again?

If you define "successful again" as making the playoffs, off the top of my head I can come up with:

    Jimmy Johnson

    Bill Parcells

    Don Schula

    Weeb Eubank

    Dick Vermiel

    Pete Carrol

    Marty Schottenhiemer

    Marv Levy

    Wade Phillips

    Tony Dungy

    Joe Gibbs

    Tom Coughlin

    Jon Gruden

    Shanahan

    Mike Holmgren

    George Allen

    Chuck Knox

    Jim Mora Sr.

    Bill Belichick

So, a lot. But just keep rationalizing.

  8. 'If you're a Bills fans you've got to want a guy like Brian, someone who knows how to build and manage an organization'. To continue, 'The Bills have good players on their roster and an experienced head coach like Brian is what that team needs right now.'

Boomer's right. If you want to build a new house, do you hire the guy who built the monstrosity next door, or some kid who can swing a mean hammer, because everyone says he's going to be a good housebuilder someday?

My fear with the 'hot coordinator' route is unless we get lucky, we go back to learn on the job mode for another 3 years and basically go nowhere.

This is my greatest fear too. Could end up with another Gregg Williams . Hiring the hot HC is total roll of the dice. Troy Aikman still says Williams is going to be a great HC someday.

  9. You don't hire a coach, so that he doesn't develop his players, QB or any other players. We need the QB of the future here NOW. We have not had one here since Kelly. True we need someone to show them the ropes, ala Crafty Vet. thats what you do to support your youth. I cant believe you said Todd Collins. you should be dunked in tar and feathered for saying that. but it is the job of the coach to develop his QB. I'd have to say thats an important position, Don't you.

Won't we have an OC and a QB coach whose job it is to develop QBs? Many on here are excited about Brian S because he worked with and developed Sanchez, Brees, and Rivers I think it was. Should Rex Ryan and Norv Turner really be getting the credit? Sure the HC is where the buck stops.

Todd looked good the last 3 1/2 games in 2007 and when he came in in relief in the Monday Night Game. In 2007 5 TDs and 0 Ints and 888 yards and a106.4 rating in 3 1/2 games. He hasnt played that much so he's not bunged up. He's studied alot and understands the game way better than some snot nose rookie QB. I just want to play one season where we aren't severely handicapped at the most important position, QB.

  10. 1. The first and most important aspect of finding the right coach here is developing a QB. That is our biggest problem, besides stopping the run. Billick failed miserably developing Kyle Boller or any other QB that he had.

Why is this so important? All we have now is young QBs. That could change. Who says a team has to develop a young QB? Gruden got to the tuck game and Callahan to the SB with Rich Gannon. They didn't develop him. The Cardinals got to the Super Bowl last year with Kurt Warner. They didn't develop him. The Bucs won the Super Bowl with Brad Johnson. They didn't develop him. The Bills got to the playoffs 2 years in a row with Doug Flutie. We didn't develop him. Billick won the Super Bowl with Trent Dilfer. He didn't develop him either.

There's not a lot of good FA QBs out there, but if we go hot and heavy for one or maybe trade for someone servicable like Todd Collins or Kerry Collins or Kyle Orton or Tavaris Jackson or Billy Volek or Duante Culpepper or Charlie Batch or Damon Huard or Jeff Garcia we could be better off than what we're trotting out there now. None of these guys would be the long term future, but so what? The future is now. And Billick knows how to win with these kind of guys. In a couple of years, get someone else. I'm tired of fielding the QB position on a wing and a prayer.

  11. Woudn't it have been nice if PK could have provided any resemblance of reasoning at all behind his comment that Harbaugh is "out"? Or is that too much to ask? More time on actually attempting to give his readers information that has substance and merit, less time describing his bad experiences on plane and train rides every Monday, perhaps.

Then he wouldn't have space to give us all the news he gets on twitter. King has no idea what he's talking about. We know as much about football and what's going on as he does.

  12. Agreed, but with some better breaks in the health department and a significant upgrade at LT, I may be in the minority in believing that the Bills' OL could be pretty darn good in 2010.

I keep reading this on here but have no idea why anyone thinks the line this year will be good next year. They stunk even when they were all healthy. Watch how good they blocked in the last minute of the first game. :wallbash:

  13. I understand the desire to have a "proven" winning coach in Buffalo...I get it, I really do. It would make most of us feel, well, comfortable because that coach comes with some assurance and history of winning. And I don't buy into the idea that just because no other coach has ever won 2 Super Bowls with two different teams that it can't be done either.... BUT, the truth is, we want a proven winning coach because it makes us FEEL better, there are very few if any statistics to show that a previously winning coach is a major contributing factor to a franchise winning with that same coach, in fact in just my humble recollection that only coaches that come to mind to have won a Super Bowl or Championship with one team and then been relatively successful with a 2nd team are: Shula (Colts and Dolphins) and Holmgren (Packers and Seahawks)....let's not forget that Bellicheat was a LOSER of a coach prior to going to the Patriots, now we can digress into all sorts of arguments as to why he started winning in N.E., but the fact is they won 3 Super Bowls in less than 10 years and made the playoffs for 9 out of 10 seasons and before N.E. he was TERRIBLE....my point you ask? Simply this, originally I wanted a NAME....now I want a COACH....I personally would prefer an offensive minded coach for the obvious reasons and I think in todays NFL it might actually be a little easier to find a good Defensive Coordinator over an inventive, creative, articulate, and charismatic leader for an Offensive Coordinator...but that's just IMO.....we do need a Coach, I just want one that will win....consistently....

On another topic, I think I understand now why Modrak and Guy have been retained. It's not for their assessment value or even because of their contract, but do we realize that every day that passes we lose ground on our ability to scout the NFL ready talent at the collegiate ranks? And that coupled with the fact that the BILLS don't want to rush their coaching search, their keeping the guys who can COLLECT the data and provide reports and updates, but WON'T make the personnnel decisions, so it's a way of keeping the information gathering and yet still take their time with the coaching decision.....if that's why their doing it, then it makes sense.....if not....then I'm all out of ideas!

I don't want an experienced winning head coach to make me feel better, I want one becuase I think the odds are better that he will produce wins. I want a COACH too. A HEAD COACH. It's a different skill set than a co ordinator or position coach. I want someone whose run a team through mini camps, off season condiditoning, training camp. preseason, regular season, and post season. Not someone whose learning as he goes along.

There have been othe coaches who have won Conference championships with multiple teams. You mention Holmgren and Schula. There's also Vermiel, Parcells, and Reeves and maybe otheres I can't think of right now. Add in the number that have won playoff games with multiple teams and list gets bigger. Add J Johnson, Marty Schottemhiemer, Tom Coughlin, George Allen, Chuck Knox (I think), My point is that there have been many successful winning coaches who have moved to another team and repeated their success. That's what I want.

How are we supposed to know if one of these assistants would be a winning HC? They have no track record. At least we know for a fact that an experienced winning coach can win. Maybe he will or maybe he won't, but we at least know that he can. True, every HC was at one time an assistant. But for evey Jim Harbaugh or Childress, there are many more Cam Camerons, Scott Linnehans, Gregg Williamses, Mike Mularkerys, and David Schulas.

A proven winning coach like Billick or Martz or Sherman or Fassel will also help attract better assistants and FA players. If you're a FA player, do you want to sign and play for Eric Mangini, or Brian Billick? If you're an assistant, do you want to leave where you are to work for unproven Leslie Frazier or Jim Fassel?

Maybe Shanahan and Gruden have turned us down, but so far Cowher, Billick, Martz, and Fassel have not.

(Praying to football gods) Please send us a real Head Coach.

  14. They rejected Billick because he is not a very good coach. If not for Ozzie Newsome's defense, he would have been far below .500 with the Ravens.

This is silly. The Stealers had a really good defense and no offense in 2005 Super Bowl. Maybe Cowher's just riding a good defense he was given. The Giants had a great defense when they beat the Patsies* the year before. Maybe Coughlin was just lucky riding the good defense he was given. The 71 Cowboys had a great defense, did Tom Landry get lucky. What about Mike Ditka with the 85 Bears. Can you name me one team that has won the Super Bowl that didn't have really good defense?

  15. ive seen billick make some horrendous decisions during the game. the worst was the last second time out against patriots which if not called would have resulted in pats being stopped on 4th down and ending their perfect season bid right there. even though they had the right defense called, billick panicked instead and gave them another chance.

thats the kind of thing people remember

Come on, you can nitpick a guy to death. That's just silly. He won a Super Bowl, but he calls dumb timeouts sometimes. What kind of logic is that?
