  1. I've seen the lack of receiving talent getting discussed around here but the what is just as important has been the lack of production of our run game.

Last season we had Shady running for almost 1300 yards and 13 TD's while averaging 5.4 yards per carry. Mike Gillislee ran for almost 600 yards and 8 TD's while averaging 5.7 ypc.

This season we have Shady running for 216 yards and 0 TD's while averaging 3.2 ypc and Mike Tolbert running for 135 yards and 1 TD and averaging 3.6 ypc.

Obviously we have to look at the offense holistically and with the lack much in the way of a passing attack, defenses can stack the box and play the run, but the same Tyrod Taylor was a part of both of these offenses and he looks to be playing at much the same level as last season. If we have the same level of production from our run game that we had last season, or even something close to it, we win these games handily. Unfortunately, there has been a massive drop off in production that will cost us games.

  2. You keep EJ and let Cassel go. My gut tells me EJ will be starting a few games this year.

I could see that happening but I'm thinking next year will be EJ's year. If he keeps on working as hard as he has and tightens up the last couple aspects of his game, I think the EJ project will finally be ready.

  3.

I'm hearing a lot of "preseason" doesn't matter around here. That's somewhat true, but it's very naive to think there's nothing that can be learned from it.

I am slightly concerned about the defense yesterday. We went up against a super bowl winning QB on a perennial winning team, a team we could face in the playoffs if we make it, and got taken on a long drive, and I didn't even get the feeling Roethlisberger was trying that hard. We couldn't stop Martavis Bryant, how are we going to stop Antonio Brown. I'm also concerned about our secondary if McKelvin and Gilmore miss too much time. So please don't use that as your argument. These little flaws will become very apparent during the season. There's a reason we went DB with our first pick this year.

I just feel "preseason doesn't count" is being used as a crutch around here when it disagrees with your viewpoint.

I dont get it either. Preseason DEFINITELY counts when you have a competition at any spot, and especially so when that position is QB.

Try telling the 30 or so guys fighting for a career right now that preseason doesnt count.

If there is one thing preseason does count for, it is evaluating and picking your starters at open positions.

Preseason does count for evaluating your starters, as you said, but there are a lot of things to take into consideration and a limited amount of things you can learn because of that. The defense, for example, did not look too hot but that was because, as Rex said, he was trying to evaluate Darby and left him on an island where he got burned. We learned that our QB's can throw the ball well and make plays, but against a defense that is learning a new system and couldn't cover anyone for their lives. The Steelers defense that we saw is completely different from what we'll see from the Patriots or the Dolphins.

  4. I've said it a bunch already- that was a really strange game. It was like an NBA All Star game or something. I feel like anyone could've come in and looked good. What's lost in all this is that Cassel didn't even look terrible. I feel like last year, he would've won the job in the preseason with his four drives. I mean, EJ and Taylor both looked other-worldly good. So good that I don't even know what to make of it.

Completely agree. It's hard to take too much from this game give how terrible Pittsburgh's defense was and I think people have been drawing too many conclusions from it. This is a prime example of how this is just the preseason.

  5.

5.5 ypa and zero points. That is not "fine." That's the definition of a QB who will have stalled drive after stalled drive.

He's complete over 87 percent of his passes in both games he's played in so far. I'd rather have Tyrod or EJ start but Cassel starting would hardly be a disaster, especially with the weapons he'd be surrounded with.

  6. Oh would you stop. Are you serious right now? That drive was his ceiling? What does that even mean? That drive was Joe Montana in his prime's ceiling. It was literally a perfect drive. I don't know if you're serious or not.

It was a great drive but far from perfect. The Steelers were leaving guys open all across the field. Taylor had guys wide open farther down the field but he threw to guys for 5-10 yard gains instead.

  7. It tells me that all they cared about was practice and not the games. Which would be stupid.

Cassel performed fine in the preseason games. Obviously he was nowhere near as exciting as Tyrod or as impressive as EJ but he would march the team steadily down the field with consistency, finding the open guy and delivering accurate throws.

  8. The front office seems to have been pretty high on him since he's been here and I think there was an article last year about him being a diamond in the rough. With the depth at linebacker cut thin with the losses of Kiko and Spikes hopefully this kid can show that he's a good player. Whaley seems like he knows linebackers so hopefully he's right with Ty as well.
