  1. Gotcha. My bad...

*Bows out feeling like a fool.

    No worries brother.

Oh and to the OP...Holcomb might be an excellent fit in your offense.*-However, the difference between a West Coast offense and a Ram's style offense might elude you. It is entirely possible that Holcomb and Spikes, especially Spikes, would have been salary cap casualities. Anything we got for them was gravy.

*(hint hint Holcomb has a weak arm)

  2. Ive seen so many incorrect player analysis on the guy from people here it's given me some honest to God laughs.

Ive watched every game the man's played.

He ABSOLUTELY was part of a rotation- so whomever in another thread said he'd excel in Buffalo cos he wont have to play all game, is wrong.

The guy honestly defines average. Nothing special, won't hurt you, a good guy to have coming INTO a rotation, not start. To get anything at all for the guy is nice, to land a guy like Spikes who, granted, is 30, like Walker, but has such a better skill set and upside in the return to form from the injury?

    I'll take it.

I know the history of the injury. I also know that Spikes played better as the year wore on last yr, and he was also hindered by a hammy injury that cant be discounted. I think he;ll be fine, and to only have to toss in a 2008 7th round pick> ????? And ya gave us a very good back up (I think he'll be AJ's back up, but whatever, they needn't burn a draft pk on QB this yr which is a plus, well, no wonder Sal Palantonio of ESPN said "Tell Buffalo Media to quote me- someone up there needs to know they were robbed!"

Oh, and this forum, apparently, has sparked some interest on another site......

    Enjoy.

It's alway's nice to meet a well mannered fan from another team. There are New England fans that post on this board and are IMO really cool. Do me a favor and send over any of the Philly fans who meet the description above.

Oh and P.S. the current trend in the NFL is to only go with a starting QB and 1 backup.

  3. Tonight on NFL Live, he just canonized Marshall Faulk into the Jerry Rice-Lawrence Taylor-Joe Montana circle of Olympic Gridiron Gods:

"There was nothing Marshall Faulk couldn't do on the football field from the running back position...He was the guy to me who was the catalyst for this multiple position back, who could run it inside, outside and catch the football...He was one of those guys that changed the game, who redefined the position...Marshall Faulk, much like those guys [Rice-Taylor-Montana] changed the way we look at the running back position."

Good grief, there's saluting a guy for a great career, and then there's servicing him like a yellow pages escort. Roger Craig was running AND receiving 1,000 yards in each column 20 years ago. Emmitt Smith, Thurman Thomas...and before that, Willis Montgomery, Lawrence McCutcheon, Joe Cribbs, etc. I loved watching Marshall Faulk on Sundays, and he may have been the best, but he was never anything I hadn't seen before.

In my very biased opinion TT was the prototype back. Roger Craig was the first back to do 1000/1000 but TT was better. Mind you I am basing this observation on stuff like, the early 80's were the start of the modern NFL and I really dont know about earlier players.

  4. I really don't think you're right. From my sources and calculations, I am convinced this trade means anywhere from 21-29 things, including who we draft, who we don't draft, who we sign, who we don't sign, who we look at, who we don't look at, how much we pay, how we play, who starts, who doesn't start, who is a back-up, who stays on the team, who is getting cut, what the depth chart looks like, what the locker room sounds like, how the make-up of the team is, who is the #3 QB, and others too many to mention.

Good post IMO. There are so many variables involved in something like this that I hesitate to post my own guesses. I just pray that we get one good to great LB and a decent one in this draft.

  5. My bet is we see 2 LB's on day one, and neither will be Willis.

Let me echo yours and The Deans comments to a certain degree. I think we will see 2 LB's on day 1. I do however, hope you are wrong and we manage to get Willis. We could end up with with a very young defense with tons of upside.

I actually am not upset that we lost Holcomb. He doesn't fit our offensive scheme even though he is an excellent back up. The benefit of Nall getting more snaps in practice outweighs the loss of his veteran (weak armed) presence.

As to TKO...I will miss him. He was a great player for us and I wish him the best with his career. In the cash to cap approach though, he was simply too expensive unless he returned to 95% of the player he was before. I will reserve full judgement on the trade until I see what the conditions are on the 2008 draft pick.

  6. FACTOIDS:

---For the record, DE Schobel is 262, Kelsay is 275, and Denney is 275.

---We haven't drafted a DE in 4 years.

---Schobel is the only drafted Bills player left from the class of 2001.

---Our DE's were all drafted in the 2nd Round (2003: Pick 16 Chris Kelsay, 2002: Pick 29 Ryan Denney, 2001: Pick 15 Aaron Schobel). Marcellus Wiley was also a Round 2 pick (1997). Sean Moran was a 4th Rounder in 1996. The only other DE in the last 11 years was Bryce Fisher as 7th Rounder in 1999.

    ---Bruce Smith was 265.

The Great 2000 DE draft is well forgotten.

Flowers Rd 1 pick 26...was a bulked up DE from 240 to the 260 range.

Corey Moore (LB...but Outland Trophy as DE?) Rd 3

Larsen...cough, cough, but a 7th and moved inside, or was an inside...can't remember.

    ...sorry for this addition.

So Bruce was 265 or so when he played?. Cool, I believe you. Do you remember if he was heavier and lost weight due to the flu, or is that something else I got wrong?

  7. I'm pretty sure earlier in his career he was in the 280's. Later it does look like he was around 265-270.

With my incredibly faulty memory it seems Bruce was around 290 early on. I vaguely recollect he had the flu and lost a bunch of weight and then played around the 275 range. Probably completely incorrect though.

  8. Can someone explain to me why it makes sense to beat a dead horse - perhaps it will come back to life? Perhaps it will come back to life if we pay it $80 million dollars over 8 years. Perhaps it will come back to life if we pay it $80 million dollars over 8 years when it wasn't even the top five horse at it's position.

Or perhaps some just like beating the horse?

My advice: put the stick down.

Necroequinesadism is a mental disorder. Please bear this in mind and treat it's victims with the proper care and consideration.

  9. Thats a horrid idea, that would leave teams with no continuity

Players would be switching teams left and right, and merchandise sales (i.e. Jersey sales) would drop drastically cause no one would pay what they are worth to own a jersey of a player only guaranteed to play for a team for one year

Well I think there would also have to be certain things added to it. Like say, you arent eligible till your 5th year to enter free agency. You could franchise a certain number of players like say 3. One player would have say a Larry Bird exemption type of contract.

Is no one willing to play devil's advocate or do I have to?

There are upsides to the idea.

    A) Players play harder in contract years.

    B) Elimination of dead cap money.

    C) You get what you pay for as a fan and an owner.

  10. Free agency for everyone every year! BRILLIANT!

You think players jump around too much now?

I will put you in the no category.

Honestly, I am simply curious as to the opinions of others. My friend mentioned it briefly again at lunch and I was reminded of it by something said in another thread. Besides my putrid average post's per day needs all the help it can get.

Personally, I would have said, "Umm do you think we might have to spend a lot more on coaching staff/scouts as the free agency market will be extremely hard to evaluate". That's just me though.

  11. That makes your premise more plausible but the problem is it would never happen. The NFLPA would never agree to that standard in collective bargaining. It would take massive collusion by the owners. I agree that it would certainly keep athletes on edge. It really would be an unfair work environment though. Can you imagine if every workplace was held to a one year standard? It's great unless you're the guy that gets fired/cut/injured....

Yeah it's more for idle chit chat I threw it out there. I can see how they might be able to swing it with certain provisions though. Say some sort of disability pension for the injured guys and lets be fair, most have a 4 year career or so. Permanent pension and a few million dollars sounds pretty dang good unless you are the CEO of a major company and then it's just your lunch expense account.

  12. Unfortunately in a competitive market, someone is always going to offer more. Players get po'd when they are franchised and that one year deal is always a big salary. Players want that big bonus that you can't get with a one year deal. It would work great if you were the only show in town.

Sorry I should clarify, as in that's the league standard.

  13. A friend of mine is a big proponent of 1 year contracts as in, that's the duration of all contracts league wide. IOW's every year is a contract year and you will only be rewarded for "what have you done for us lately". Of course the NFLPA would never go for it and it would have to be a hard salary cap IMO. There would have to be some sort of provision for replacing injured players. I have my own feelings on the subject but I was curious as to how you folks felt.

(btw before people start going off about how he's a complete moron, it's just a random idea of his and he's extremely knowledgable about almost every sport)

    Edited for clarity

  14. The chemistry crap is total B.S. The only question IMO is what kind of $$ is he looking for? If he's cheap, it's a no-brainer.

I would respectfully disagree with the first part of your statement. I could care less if he's cheap, comes back, and then start's griping to high heaven as he probably wont be worth it. If he can even keep his mouth shut then it's a no-brainer to me.
