I hate to defend him but if this was signed after 4 it isn't processed until tomorrow, right?
I think you're technically right, but he phrased the tweet in such absolute and clumsy terms that he still looks foolish.
"NFLs transaction wire for Tuesday is out. No Bills transactions listed, which means no Clay offer sheet or Harvin signing."
-
Someone who knows more should chime in, but I'm guessing that Miami is going to make everyone wait until the very last minute (if not the second) to match/not match.
-
So Mike Rodak's ONE contribution to the Clay story these past few days (scanning the transaction wire and declaring that he won't be signed today) was 100% wrong.

Goodell's failure to acknowledge CTE in any meaningful way is what really needs to be discussed. No NFL dedicated testing, awareness campaigns, research or funding for afflicted ex-players. Plenty of time and money for breast cancer awareness and abused women, but not one penny of marketing promotions dedicated to the disease that directly afflicts the players as a result of the game itself.
The hypocrisy disgusts me. It would be like the military pretending PTSD didn't exist while promoting awareness of fibromyalgia. Goodell needs to get real with this disease, and start supporting the wounded warriors of the NFL whose lives are at real risk within a few years of retirement. THAT should be the fallout of this story.
I think you're being a bit unfair to Goodell. How can you expect him to deal with CTE when there are so many potential uniform violations and excessive end zone celebrations to police? I mean, once he starts to spend time dealing with a potential epidemic, the next thing you know players are going to start running rampant with non-Nike or (gasp!) unlicensed apparel.

I think the discussion is more about a healthy player retiring after 1 season due to fear of the impact of the game rather than how bad the niners will be as a result
I think most people can manage to separate multiple angles of the same story, but I completely agree with your overall point. When I first saw the headline, I thought that he was already having complications from previous head injuries. For him to be a healthy guy (with a ton of promise) who is just looking out for himself in the long term is indeed stunning.
-
Not sure I've ever seen one team have as bad of an offseason as the one the Niners are having this year.
-
Does he know it's not just about 2015 or nah?
@OmarKelly: The Bills have $14M in cap space. The Dolphins have $21M. Not sure there's an offer Miami can't match. WANT TO is a different subject.
In addition to not acknowledging that it's about more than 2015, he also doesn't acknowledge that the Bills (I think) have more players under contract for 2015 and fewer spots to fill, or the fact that the Dolphins have pretty much exhausted their additional cap-saving moves (whereas the Bills still have a few to play if they need them).
I know that he's more of a rabble-rouser than a pure beat reporter, but he really seems to have an axe to grind with the Bills and is gradually crossing the line into total "bitter fanboy" mode.
-
First Clay didn't sign the offer because there hasn't been one. But he knows what it is.
Second, Omar just used the Greater Than sign > about the bad source. In Twitter language he actually said Tim Graham's source was greater than bad source which would mean good source.

So glad you posted that about the "Greater Than" sign. That made me pause too, but I dismissed it as I assumed I just wasn't down with the latest Twitter lingo.

I hope Chip Kelly stays HC of the Eagles for a while. He certainly makes the offseason entertaining.
-
Someone posted on twitter that the Bills have until 4/24 to present the offer sheet. If true, and they are just waiting for the fish to be forced to sign other guys who will take up cap space as they have several other needs, they must be pretty confident that Clay isn't going to sign there long term.
Sucks for us as impatient fans, but if the Bills are indeed milking the clock to try and work it to their advantage I'm not sure that's a bad thing. Whaley and his team are paid to know how to work the system, so if that's the strategy I'm good. I'd obviously like to know the answer sooner, but I'm ultimately relieved if it is accurate that our side is dictating the timing and not being played by the Dolphins, Clay, or anyone else.
And either way, Whaley has a back-up plan. That's his job and it would be GM malpractice (assuming there is such a thing) for him not to have one.
-
Anyone know if we signed this guy yet? Thanks.

This didn't deserve it's own thread. It's just specuation from someone with less credibility than half of us posters.
Completely agree. I really thought it would be real news when I clicked on it.

https://twitter.com/WGR550/status/576913113766850560Knowledgable source tells me Dolphins have "lost patience" with and "moved on" from Charles Clay. At moment, Fins expect him to be a Bill.

At this point, I would take everything with a grain of salt. This is all gamesmanship now.

He should go back to GB if they would still take him (on the cheap).
-
Other than seeing and hearing his name during the small number of Dolphins games I watch each year (i.e., two games against the Bills and an occasional featured game), I don't think I spent even 10 seconds of my life thinking about Charles Clay prior to this offseason. Yet, I've spent the past few days checking every site I know on a routine basis trying to get an update on his status, thought process, etc.
Free agency is a really weird time of year. . .
-
We already did and then pissed him off by not renewing his coaching contract.
Damn, you're right. I'm back on the Clay bandwagon.
Can someone please do a search of the Twitter thing and find something that says he's definitely signing with the Bills?
-
I say we just bring back Pete Metzelaars.

I'm over it

Same here. The Bills have more cap room than the Dolphins and don't have to unload anyone to make it happen. What that tells me is that either (a) he really didn't want to come to Buffalo or (b) while the Bills liked him, they didn't like him enough to want to exceed whatever limit they set for him. Either way, good riddance.

If and when this team does finally make the playoffs, there are going to be some seriously pumped up players on the field. I'm in the camp who doesn't think we should keep Freddie just for sentimental purposes, but it would be really sweet to see him play in his first playoff game. Kyle Williams hasn't been there either, nor have Mario, Wood, Dareus and a vast majority of fan favorites.

@AdamSchefter: Saints are giving RB C.J. Spiller a 4-year, $18 million deal that includes $9 million guaranteed, per source. Last year of deal can void.
In terms of annual salary, isn't that what he supposedly turned down from the Bills? Not sure about guarantees, options, etc.
-
I'm sorry, but if Miami wants to have two high-paid TEs, neither of whom are named "Gronkowski" or "Graham," plus the huge cap numbers for Suh, Wallace, and Tannehil, I'm not sure that's necessarily a bad thing.
-
Reading the tea leaves a bit, Miami is going to be in some trouble cap-wise next year. They've already got $128M committed to 36 players, and that's not counting Jordan Cameron. Now, in order to fit Cameron under this year's cap, his cap number has to be $6M or less (that's without creating room to sign draft picks), which means his cap number next year will be approx. $9M (at least).
http://www.spotrac.com/nfl/miami-dolphins/cap/2016/
That means that they're at $137M for 37 players. Now, they will probably cut Dannell Ellerbe (likely post June 1st designation), which means his dead money will be reduced from $7M down to $3.5Mish, and they can probably restructure Mike Wallace to bring his number down from $13M, but that would kick a very large can into 2017 (cap number would be about $20M and nearly half of it would be bonus money).
So realistically, we're talking about Miami being at $130M+ for 37 players, and still having to address the contracts of Olivier Vernon and Mike Pouncey.
Seeing that $28.5 million cap number for Suh in 2016 is HILARIOUS. I assume that they have a plan to restructure it at some point, but that's probably not something you want hanging out there unresolved.
-
Wish him all the best. That said, it probably would have been cheaper (and less painful) for them if they had managed their cap better last year and just kept Sproles.
-
The NFL should just cancel the the season and go with a year-round FA period. This past week has been way more entertaining than 99% of the games last year!

Charles Clay REPORT: Dolphins won't match offer sheet

You're probably being generous. That's a terrible fan base.
