Beane likes to go to the Porche dealership on a Saturday morning, waste the sales’ staff time making a loud show of being interested in a brand-new sporty vehicle, then get back in his comfy 2003 Honda and drive off, patting himself on the back for not unnecessarily splurging on luxury.  We do this charade every year.  On the way home he’ll stop at Chipotle and overpay for guacamole just to allow himself a li’l treat and prove that he’s not cheap.

I don't always agree with your posts, but I do here 😁. Love this analogy.

Same ol' was a bummer a few years ago. But if they're trotting back the same team that was probably 13 seconds from a SB this past season, it's not so bad.

13 seconds from the AFC Championship* (against a team who has gotten better this offseason and has a lot more money to spend).

In your world, 4.3 and 4.4 YPC the last two years is paltry? You live in kind of a weird world. When given a chance to run, he's been very productive.

And what makes him a "limited third down type guy"? The fact that he's a very successful third down guy? Who has been quite productive when asked to ru and is an excellent pass blocker?

"5 years of non production from the backs under Mcd / Beane seems like it' should be time to try something a little different," you say? Good lord, that is a misguided take. The running game has had a lot of production in five years. Singletary's never had a year where he averaged less than 4.4 yards a carry.  And the offense has been top three the last two years. And you figuret that's time for a change? Yeah, well first, bringing in McKissic is a change, and as for larger changes, we have other far more urgent priorities.

Oh, and yeah, the Steelers really benefitted from drafting an RB early. They benefitted so much they vaulted down to become the 23rd best offense in the league!! Yeah, baby, our offense really has to learn to be more like that 23rd best Steelers group!!

To be fair, they were 25th in 2020, so

the one thing this staff can do is develop secondary.

white was a first rounder, taron was a 4th rounder, and dane was a 7th.

we should not be worried about CB at all

This is where I'm at. I'd have loved to keep Wallace at that $ amount. But the Bills were able to convert a UDFA in Wallace into a low end #2 and a 7th rounder in Jackson into a low end #2. I'm confident in them to fill the CB spot in the draft just fine.

I also include the nickel package, which is to say the base defense. Plus when you have these LBs covering modern TEs...I mean they have average speed compared to someone like Mike Gesicki. You can't really use them in man or match up zones against teams with more athletic TEs. Now Edmunds erases a lot of ground but Milano does struggle with faster TEs.

The problem with the Bills is that they go out of their way to protect their safeties and corners. They have that mushroom zone because they simply don't have the speed to play anything more aggressive.

There's a lot of lockeroom/intangibles that our safety battery mates bring, but I would have thought long and hard replacing 1 of them with someone like Justin Reid - or finagling a way to draft someone like Kyle Hamilton. purely on the onfield. that would be a dynamic change to the defense that allows you to get a lot more tactical with coverages.

But as it stands I think the Bills have 5 dudes out there who run 4.55 or slower 40s. Fortunately the Bills have a good pass rush. but you want to have a defense that's going to spike elite passing games, you need to be better than good in the pass rush, with so little speed in the backend

I appreciate this writeup and assessment - it's really informative.

    Thank you!

"huge need" is an exaggeration as Dane Jackson showed enough to be a replacement level starter, which is fine as you can protect him by making him a boundary corner.

The problem is that Bills standing still haven't fixed their primary problem with the roster, which is speed in the back 7. You can do that by straight up adding more speed in the secondary in multiple spots, or by getting better in the pass rush so you don't have to cover Hill for as long as you do now.

But right now, there's no reason to think the Chiefs won't put up a 40 spot on this defense.

It's semantics, but back 4, right? Milano/Edmunds are plenty fast for LBs. It's our DBs that are a litttttttle slow.

Haha no. No he isn’t. Think Kamara-lite. He was a Swiss-army weapon for the Team. Can even line up wide and run credible routes. This is the Bills screen game being built as we watch. Or a shell-killer as he releases to the flat or in the middle beyond the LOS.

Tremendous add. I didn’t even think this was possible. And he’s gonna be a fantasy monster.

We are actually on the same side. Just misunderstood your point when I saw taking Breece in the second lol People don't understand you can't just assume every great prospect is going to fall to us. Made me ignore the rest of the point of the post.

    Oh okay, got it 🤝.

Yeah, I'm on the side that as much as we might want premier players at every position, it's not possible. So let's be smart with our resources and prioritize where we can. If that means getting a cheap part-time RB in FA because we can get a better CB in the draft on a cost-controlled contract, I'm all for it. I just brought up Hall because the person I was replying to did.

If Breece is there at our second round pick I will let you change my avatar to your choice. There is zero percent chance of that happening. he goes mid second the latest likely late first early second.

Lol this isn't my argument, so feel free to sub in whatever RB you want for Breece Hall. My points are

a.) it's perhaps it's a bit wiser to spend a 2nd on a CB than it is a RB, and

b.) we're doing to have to decide what positions to prioritize.

But this is why we don’t win Super Bowls. You need high end talent at all positions. Breece Hall is faster and equally catches passes as well as McKissic. I don’t want to just get better, I want to dominate. That’s what it takes to win Super Bowls.

Great. Let's flip it around then.

We all know we need a CB2. What if Beane spent $3.5M/yr on a low-level CB and drafted Breece Hall in the 2nd. Wouldn't we be having the same conversation?

I know in my case I'd rather get a solid, young CB on a cost-controlled contract than I would a RB... but that's just me.
