If New England loses to San Diego tonight, it seems to me that our easiest path to the playoffs would be winning the AFC East. Would need Bills to win out, Pats to lose 1 of their next 2 games (and to Bills of course), and Miami to lose 1 of their final 3 games. Piece of cake.

  2. ... if we can pull out a win against Green Bay at the Ralph and then beat Oakland as we should, that final game in New England could put us at 10-6.

    Not implausible...

Agreed. The formula is to win one of the next two, beat Oakland, and then pray/drink heavily during the New England game.

IF the Pats lose to San Diego next week, the division gets interesting in my opinion. Assuming that happens, consider this scenario: The Bills get to 9-6 by splitting the next two games and beating Oakland, while the Pats split their two games after San Diego (vs Miami and the Jets). If that were to happen, the 10-5 Pats and the 9-6 Bills would play in week 17 for the division. Put another way, we'd win the tiebreaker if both teams finish 10-6 (not factoring in Miami for this scenario).

One more scenario from the Playoff Machine: If you assign wins the rest of the season to the team that is higher in espn's power rankings, then flip the Bills-Packers game so the Bills win and the Dolphins-Ravens game so the Dolphins win, then a Bills win in week 17 vs New England would give them a wild card (Bills, Chiefs, Dolphins, and Ravens would all finish 10-6 with the Bills and Chiefs winning tiebreakers to get the wild cards). Ok, it's after midnight. Must ... close ... playoff ... machine.

Exactly. I don't know about anyone else but I am not willing to concede the division to the Pats. It is a long shot but we are two games out with four to play. Why not us?

  5. I am admittedly a hopeless optimist with playoff scenarios, but here's how I see it:

    • We're favored this week vs. the Jets and will likely be favored at home the following week vs Cleveland (especially if we beat the Jets). Win those two and all the sudden things start to look a lot better at 7-5, especially since at least some of the teams ahead of us will have lost games during that period.
    • Get to 7-5, beat Oakland, and split vs. Denver and GB (admittedly very difficult), then we enter the New England game at 9-6 and likely still alive for the playoffs. If that happened, it would be like a playoff game to me.

  6. For what it's worth, I've gotten Sunday Ticket for free basically every year since becoming a customer in 2009 (using the type of tactics mentioned in this thread). But this year I made my annual call and was told that my account was audited and found to have received too many discounts in recent years, so there is a hold on any further promotions for a set period of time (they could not say how long). So now I'm trying to decide whether to suck it up and pay full price, or just switch to another cable provider.

Just wanted to let people know that there is an end to riding the gravy train, so try not to get on the naughty list like me!

  7. To whom?

I think he comes off horribly to the media and, more importantly, fans like me who want to hear thoughtful answers to the questions asked of him about the team.

I'm surprised that a lot of people here seem to be taking his side over the media. His attitude to the reporters, especially during yesterday's press conference, was bush league and embarrassing (to me at least). And to be totally honest, Marrone isn't exactly the most articulate or cerebral-sounding coach in the league, and that only becomes magnified when he is deliberately terse with the media in answering questions. Put another way, he's not smart or successful enough (yet) to pull off the Belichick approach to dealing with the media.

  8. He is letting the team know in no uncertain terms through his answers to the press that preseason or not, he expects them to win and he will not tolerate any BS excuses from people as to why they couldn't get it done.

I think you're right, but I think it's a laughable attitude to take. He wants desperately to win, but he benches starters after 10 plays? Couldn't have wanted to win that badly ...

In my opinion Marrone is coming off horribly by being so terse with the media. Belichick gets away with it because he wins. Marrone just looks foolish.

  9.

Let's keep telling ourselves that --- with 4 Pro Bowlers and a potential 5th (Kiko) -- led league in sacks, 2nd in INT's, Top 5 pass defense --- issues were around contain / cut backs / over pursuit --- yielding big plays --- reality: defense was the ONLY bright spot on the 6-10 Marrone team ---- lose Pettine and start planning for Top 3 pick in 2015 draft --- Mariota, Hundley, Hackenberg, Petty etc. etc. ---- another rinse/repeat and rebuild with a new HC --- lose Pettine this year and Marrone will be on proverbial hot seat next year when this team goes 3-13

So you've decided to skip the period altogether I see. Bold move, and I kind of like it.

  10. It's a good sign (for us) that they are still interviewing... I want another year with Pettine so hopefully one of our defensive coaches that stays can keep his system (if it proves successful).

My thoughts exactly. One more year with Pettine enables us to carry over his/Rex Ryan's system a bit more seamlessly. And to be honest, while I have a lot of respect for Pettine's coaching abilities, it's really the system that is most important to keep in my opinion.

  11. I know he's had some struggles this year, but how do you not just love this guy? In my mind, he's one of the bright spots on the team this year.

For a rookie, and a small one at that, playing one of the most difficult positions for a rookie--he's shown to me that the game is not too big for him. He's given up a few TDs, yes, but he's also making some big plays. Yesterday, he had 6 combined tackles, a sack, a forced fumble, and a fumble recovery. Not bad for a guy who plays nickel corner at 5'7" and, maybe, 165 lbs.

Love seeing this guy out on the field. Hopefully the experience makes him even better next year.

I really like Robey too. I actually think his size is an advantage in that he's more in the mold of today's classic slot receivers (small, shifty guys like Welker, Amendola, etc.). Sometimes it takes a quick little guy to cover a quick little guy.

  12. The necessary wk. 15 wins are not cumulatively probable, but they are individually probable. A Bills fan is rooting for favorites this week.

Let's beat the Jags and move this thing to wk. 16

Well said. I give the Bills and Lions each about a 60% chance of winning, and the Patriots and Panthers each about a 75% chance of winning. Assuming those odds, there's about a 20% chance we're still alive heading into next week. Keep hope alive!

  13. So you thought this thread was dead? Think again!

I recognize this is a tremendous waste of time, but what else am I going to do on my Friday lunch hour? For those curious how the Bills can remain mathematically alive after this week, here's what needs to happen in week 15:

    1) Bills over Jags

    2) Lions over Ravens

    3) Pats over Dolphins

    4) Panthers over Jets

If those games go our way, here's what we'd need to stay alive thru week 16:

    1) Bills over Dolphins

    2) Pats over Ravens

    3) Browns over Jets

    4) Raiders over Chargers

And if THOSE games go our way, here's what we need to clinch a spot in week 17:

    1) Bills over Pats

    2) Bengals over Ravens

    3) Chiefs over Chargers

    4) Jets over Dolphins

Also, I think a couple other teams like the Steelers would need to lose at least one game along the way, but it wouldn't matter where.

So there you have it, 12 steps to a Bills playoff berth. Call it the Dirty Dozen. Let's do this!

And for the record, if you assume each of those 12 outcomes has about a 50% likelihood of happening (obviously some are more likely than others, but just for the sake of argument ...), then if my math is correct the Bills' likelihood of making the playoffs would be approximately .02%, or about 1 in 5,000. Tis the season for miracles!

  14.

I did find someone who argues against the points from Jerry's column from today:

"It’s only one game ... But this does feel different from the teases of the past. It starts with Manuel, of course."

"Still, you can’t fake the poise and command that Manuel has demonstrated early in his first season. It takes a special talent to lead a winning drive under enormous pressure. He’s quickly winning the confidence of his teammates and lifting the sense of belief within the team."

"If Manuel, Woods and Alonso are as good as they look, the Bills could be a contender a lot sooner than people expected."

"The New Age Bills. You must admit, it has a ring to it."

That person, of course, was none other than Jerry Sullivan himself, from an article from less than 3 months ago titled "Seems like a dawn of a new age for the Bills."

People are entitled to change their opinions, but this guy blows with the wind. All is not perfect after a win, and all is not lost after a couple losses. EJ didn't go from being "a special talent" in September to being compared to JP Losman in December. In short, chill the eff out.

  15. And I think most of those losses could have easily been wins, which tells me that they've been in almost every game (New Orleans & Pittsburgh are the only two I can think of where they were outplayed all game long). This also tells me they have a chance at winning all of the games they have left. I know we've all seen this before, but it ain't over 'til it's over. Yes, beating Atlanta would have helped a ton, but it didn't happen. Even before that game, the playoffs were a long shot, anyway. Let's just see what happens.

I'll still be paying attention and rooting for them to win. I know it's unlikely they'll get in, but I'm staying on the bus. For those of you who want to get off, feel free.

Sums up my feelings exactly. Really my goal now is to have them mathematically alive going into NE in week 17. I think there's a decent chance of that happening, and that would make the NE game the biggest Bills game in a LONG time.

  16. If that's not far fetched then I can't imagine what you think is.

It's the kind of thing that seems far-fetched when you look at it as a long list of things that need to happen, but really all you need are 2 things:

    1) The Bills need to win out

    2) Other AFC teams need to play pretty much like they've played all season, winning some and losing some.

I'll grant you #1 is pretty unlikely, although I think we have a better than 50-50 chance in each of the next 3 games. But #2 is not unlikely, in my opinion.

  17. At the risk of sending some people over the edge, if you use the ESPN playoff machine to give wins to the teams that are better in ESPN's power rankings as of today, then flip the Bills' two final games to make us win out, the 6th playoff seed goes to ... wait for it ... wait for it ... Da Bills.

NOBODY ... circles the wagons ... like the BUFFALO BILLS! Who's with me? Who's with me? No? Just me? OK then.

  18.

    Thanks man.

I really needed to hear something positive like this.

No problem. I recognize this thread will continue to get overrun by angry, frustrated fans who lash out at playoff talk as a defense mechanism, but if they win games they can still make it.

Of course, I'll grant that it's unlikely they can win out. But I don't think it's impossible that they will beat 2 of the worst teams in the league, TB and Jax, each of whom have fewer wins than the Bills, as well as a team they've already beaten (on the road with a backup QB), Miami.

As I mentioned, if they win those 3, I think they have a good shot to be alive going into week 17, which would be cool.
