And in many ways, they are. However, while I have heard the term "religion of peace", I haven't ever heard which sect(s) are actually using that term. It makes a big difference who uses it. Speaking of Tom Petty, since a bunch of people were wondering, I'll make a post on that later today in off-topic. Saw him on Sunday night. To be honest, I'm not sure what to think about that. I have a feeling that the press has a lot to do with us not hearing about it. I haven't seen anything in the newspapers that I read interviewing peaceful American muslim leaders at all. Seems to me that its a better story if they don't, one that sells more newspapers. I'm willing to give parts of the religion the benefit of the doubt here, as I believe that the media isn't exactly enclined to promote the more moderate messages. While I understand your point, I don't agree with it. I would argue that Catholicism is but one interpretation of Christianity. You're labeling a section of Christianity, Catholicism, instead of all of Christianity. I think this is a big problem in this discussion. Americans generally don't have a great understanding of the different types/variations/interpretations of Islam and the Qur'an, as we just aren't exposed to it culturally. I know that I, for one, wish that I had a better understanding of the different variations, rather then just general ideas of the differences between sects.

Oh lord. You're trying to confine a topic such a terrorism to a single, rather simplified definition? This is going to be fun.

What this nonsensical babbling has to do with the news story I haven't the foggiest idea.
-
And yet, you manage to do just that in your very own post, by talking in general statements about Islam and peace.

Hrm, the Khalifa translation that I have says: 9:5 Once the Sacred Months are past, (and they refuse to make peace) you may kill the idol worshipers when you encounter them, punish them, and resist every move they make. If they repent and observe the Contact Prayers (Salat) and give the obligatory charity (Zakat), you shall let them go. GOD is Forgiver, Most Merciful. Wait, you mean there are different translations for the same book? SURELY NO! Islam is so simple, and they all believe the same thing, like the Bible! The Bible is so clear cut that everyone knows what it says is and everyone in the entire world believes the same thing.

Yup.

My point was that there are multiple secs of Islam. Being the 2nd largest religion in the world, with a lot (majority?) of the religion populating underdeveloped areas, its not really surprising that multiple interpretations and secs have developed. People generally seem to have a hard time dividing how secs use elites to purport information to their members and where the blame should lie. All religions are fueled by the interpretations of elites, passed down to their followers. Part of the reason why we have so many different interpretations of the same book (Bible). Its BS and I know it? Thats news to me. Comments like this is what I'm referring to: When anyone talks about war versus a religion, its the same as saying denounce your religion or die.

No, but much of the US and this thread it seems is ready to say "Convert from Islam, or die!!"

Nice. I lost two games today.

It's refreshing to see a coaching staff competent enough to make a scheme that fits the players, rather then forcing the players into a ridiculous attempt at a plan.

Because, after all, Mack Brown didn't have anything to do with Vince Young at Texas. They were two separate entities and what not.

http://www.docsports.com/2006/nfl-power-rankings-week-2.html San Fransisco. His reasoning: He had San Fransisco and Buffalo 31 and 32 to start the season.
-
Didn't you know, Mack Brown can't win a big game, so Texas wasnt' really #2, it was a cake walk.

Something is really wrong when a replay which is SO FRIGGIN OBVIOUS is wrongly called. NFL & NCAA need to get together and have a ref training program.
-
Anyone see that on-side kick? The Sooners got !@#$ed. Oregon might win now. Looked as bad as an NFL replay. WTF is with these refs?
-
Most likely, I think you're right, that someone is riling them up. They, like everyone else, get their news from a group of elites. The elites, in their case, would find it beneficial to maintain the status quo by doing so. By keeping the focus off of themselves, and on the west, its a good way to maintain attention on someone else.

Damn you agreeing with me, now I'll be forever labeled as part of your online mafia.

I must say that given Texas losing to Ohio State, I will enjoy any team ahead of them losing.

We're supposed to like teams in our division?

Mmkay, I could see where you could say that, so let me explain what I'm saying in different terms. When a worldview is threatened, typically it is resisted as much as possible. Part of the process of resisting it is actually to eliminate the opposing worldview as much as it is found acceptable. Some Christians would find it reasonable to kill the opposition in this instance because they are trying to kill him, while other Christians wouldn't as its in direct opposition to the commandment "Thou Shalt Not Kill". Its the same thing with Muslins, except that it goes even further in some groups of people who share the same worldviews that Osama Bin Laden does. With the Muslim sect being 1.2 billion people, in parts of the world that aren't as well developed socially or economically, its easy to explain why more extreme worldviews are held. One summary of the pope's speech is recounted here: Today I would expect that a lot of Christians would abhor this and find it repulsive, and I would think that a lot of it has to do with the society that we live in. Worldviews are developed by elites, and the elites in the West find the crusades and holy wars inherently wrong, which isn't exactly the case in the middle east. So, yeah, there are differences in the religions. There are lots of differences elsewhere too, and they're all interrelated, is what I'm trying to say.
