My group of friends will not be getting together in our cottages in Canada for the first time in--(Let's see, how old am I? When did we first start going?...) well, conservatively 45+ years.  Yes, one of us missed the occasional year due to life's circumstances, but the even goes on!  We're looking at dates in September as a possible makeup date.

In the same boat.  I have been vacationing (renting) in Canada every summer, save 2 or 3, for my entire life.  This one looks in serious jeopardy.  I too am looking at possibly getting up in September. If they institute beer delivery In Ontario I would have no problem staying isolated at the cottage.  Typically I pretty much stay put once there anyway. Will surely miss it if the border stays closed

    Yeah fake news!!  He stumbled...stumbled.

This incident in Buffalo demonstrates several of the reasons for widespread anger by the protesters.  Protesters claim:

-too often excess or careless force is used

-the other officers present  do not seem to correct the bad behavior

-the other police officers then lie in reports to cover for the excess

-without the videos the police version of events is assumed true

    - this all results in a perception of a lack of accountability for bad police behavior.

    - covering for bad cops then too often results in future bad police behavior leading to undeserved citizen injuries and deaths

-in addition, trust in law enforcement overall then suffers

-lawsuits then follow, costing the taxpayers actual dollars

So, how do we improve the accountability and the trust?  How do you empower officers to better control bad behavior in other officers?  How do you convince police unions that gains they perceive in covering for bad officers are lost many times over in the long run, as we see in the rioting?

  3. The launch as shown on CNN was screwy.  They got the audio and video out of sync. They seemed to have a video version that was about 15 seconds behind live. They then switched to ‘live’ video as the countdown got near but they didn’t switch to live audio.

The result was seeing the liftoff for about 5 seconds before the final 10 second countdown on the audio.  The rocket was pretty high up before the audio caught up announcing liftoff.

How to stop your glasses from fogging up when you wear a mask

But there's a simple fix for that, and it'll only take a minute or two. All you need is soap and water.

Soap and water act like a cloak that reduces surface tension on the lenses. This magic mix allows the water molecules from your breath to distribute evenly, rather than cluster on your lens in a way that makes it difficult to see.

    Just the advice I needed

Aren’t you defeating the purpose of the mask if it is pushing your breath up and out past your glasses rather than going through the filtering of the mask?

  5. If any regular poster here made such stupid comments as Trumps disinfecting ideas from yesterday’s press conference, you folks would never let that person live it down.

If it were me, there would be at least a dozen posts about cannabis rotting my brain.  Go ahead though and keep making excuses for him. If anyone here doubted the Trump cult accusations, these defenses should erase those doubts

I have been reading how it’s not the virus that kills people, but their immune system going nuts and causing the inflammation in the lungs etc. the so called “ cytokene” storm.

Linked clip from a good friend who is good friends with this DR. Who was positive and his story on how anti inflammatory was like a miracle cure. Obviously anecdotal, but wonder if this might be how treatment evolves.

You have probably seen the other thread on this board being 'moderated' by Hapless.  The above link is a posting in that thread that talks about cannabis compounds and this cytokine storm.  I linked to the PPP medical cannabis page with some of my personal experiences with a February respiratory flu - obviously anecdotal as well.

There have been conflicting studies about the wisdom of using cannabis compounds around viruses and I am not a medical or research scientist, but a cannabis based treatment seems like it may have some future.  See the links at the other post if you have not already.  Briefly, some cannabinoids are bronchodilators to help breathing, some seem to suppress this cytokine storm issue as described by the doctor in the video, and relatively, it has few side effects.  In addition, if found to be effective, concentrates are already available worldwide today and production of cannabis concentrates has already been scaled up for today's medical and adult use markets.

Doing searches on "cannabinoids, 'cytokine storm'" uncovers some studies done with other viruses on the nih.gov site too.  Other google searches uncover the typical wide range of sources and validity so look out for that.

The drug, leronlimab, doesn't treat the covid-19 virus directly.  One complication of covid-19 is cytokine storm, where the patient's own immune system goes into berserker mode and starts attacking the lungs (this happens as a complication of some influenza cases as well).   Leronlimab "calms the storm"

Hap, feel free to move/delete this if you feel it does not belong here.  It was posted in the PPP thread 'Know Anyone with a Disease'.  That is a medical cannabis thread here. There I have posted more of my personal experience with recent respiratory problems and cannabis concentrates.

I have been reading a bit more about the 'cytokine storm' that seems to overwhelm the lungs in covid-19 patients.  This is essentially an overreaction by our immune system to the virus.  It seems that this overreaction is at the heart of the fluid build up in the lungs and so to the shortness of breath issue.  With THC being a bronchodilator, there may be a treatment hidden in here somewhere I think.

I am no expert in this field, unfortunately.  From what I have read, many of the potential pharma treatments try to also quiet this cytokine storm.  I am curious if there is any actual current research on using cannabinoids to try to treat covid-19 patients.

    Executive summary

Cannabinoids, the active components of Cannabis sativa, and endogenous cannabinoids mediate their effects through activation of specific cannabinoid receptors known as cannabinoid receptor 1 and 2 (CB1 and CB2).

The cannabinoid system has been shown both in vivo and in vitro to be involved in regulating the immune system through its immunomodulatory properties.

Cannabinoids suppress inflammatory response and subsequently attenuate disease symptoms. This property of cannabinoids is mediated through multiple pathways such as induction of apoptosis in activated immune cells, suppression of cytokines and chemokines at inflammatory sites and upregulation of FoxP3+ regulatory T cells.

Cannabinoids have been tested in several experimental models of autoimmune disorders such as multiple sclerosis, rheumatoid arthritis, colitis and hepatitis and have been shown to protect the host from the pathogenesis through induction of multiple anti-inflammatory pathways.

Cannabinoids may also be beneficial in certain types of cancers that are triggered by chronic inflammation. In such instances, cannabinoids can either directly inhibit tumor growth or suppress inflammation and tumor angiogenesis.

I doubt cannabis can do much to fight the covid-19 pandemic.  Cannabinoids seem to nudge the body's own systems to act....generally relatively slowly.  This illness seems to overwhelm the respiratory system so quickly, I doubt cannabis would kill it off before it kills off a vulnerable host.  However, cannabis may yet have a role in treating symptoms.

I caught a respiratory bug in early February (probably from the Sabres game on 2/4).  I woke up on the 8th feeling crappy with a very heavy chest.  For medical cannabis patients, most often their underlying reason for taking med cannabis does not go away just because they have now added in a cold or the flu.  Same for me and when trying to smoke when I got this illness, it felt like the coughing may make my lungs turn inside out....way too irritating.

(I am not a medical professional so these opinions are just my observations.)

To address one's underlying issues, you can still get medicinal benefits by ingesting differently, cannabis oil or edibles specifically.  THC is a known bronchodilator and it can help with some types of breathing difficulties.  If you read the articles above, in addition, there is some indication that cannabis suppresses immune response.  If the immune response may be responsible for worsening breathing issues at some point, modulating that response may help.  In other processes, endo-cannabinoids are essentially messenger molecules which tamp down 'overactive' responses.  I am just speculating here to explain the following.

When I was ill I had access to high THC cannabis concentrate as well as cannabis infused coconut oil and used a little of both with my morning coffee.  Over the next several hours the positive impact on my chest congestion was so good, I thought I might actually be getting over the illness.  I could breathe soooo much better.  My cough continued but for a few hours the cough was much more productive at hoarking up lung mucus (sorry for that image).

Although the illness should be gone by now, I don't yet feel 100%.  I have had lingering congestion.  Is that related to immune suppression of cannabis?  It may be, I don't know, and that would certainly be a terrible side effect if so.  Before writing this up, I wanted to repeat today the cannabis/coffee experiment mentioned above.  Right now, the impact is the same, my breathing is again very much improved.

If you have access to cannabis concentrates and/or cannabis infused coconut oil, buy some.  If not, you may want to consider making your own.  These products will allow you to get benefits from cannabis without smoking or vaping.  The following link goes into detail on canning the resultant oil but that is unnecessary.  The finished product can be kept for years without sealing or refrigeration.

 That's some world class revisionist history, Bob. Maybe you would like to read the timelines posted in this thread about when Trump "got off his ass."

And, I am not certain why you think it is a-ok for Cuomo to criticize Trump/the Trump administration for their help and support during this crisis, and President Trump should allow his administration to be disparaged. That is nuts. Trump fights. He is fighting the "msm," the Democrats, and people like you willing to spread a false narrative, constantly. Want to know what his supporters like best about Trump? He fights.

Trump has been overly concerned with appearances over reality at every turn. He chooses to look like he solves a problem over actually solving it whenever possible.  He made a couple of good yet unpopular decisions closing travel from China early on and won't let anyone forget about it.  He spends 15-20% of his time self congratulating.  OMG if I hear one more time about how smart he was, .....  Yes, he made that decision.  He did good.  Since then, he has been his typical idiotic self however.

If I can post the following post three weeks ago why has he still not realized that is what needs to be done?  I also posted about making and using cloth masks weeks before Trump.  Why didn't he kick things into gear weeks ago, if not months?  Answer:  appearances.   Ok, the expert opinions were all over for a while but Jesus Christ, if I can post on this board about practical ideas to help weeks ago, why has the administration been so slow?  Answer: fear of appearances.

And, no one should have to kiss this President's ass in order to get him to do his ***** job.  The people of Michigan should not be punished because Governor Whitmer spoke the truth to this highly flawed fool that is in charge.  If where I worked I saw a manager taking criticism personally and acting so foolishly, I would go over his/her head to report the behavior.  It is not how an organization should operate.  Again, Trump should do his ***** job and that surely includes accepting criticism

From what I have read, the trained medical personnel, ICU beds, and the ventilators (respirators) seem to be the limiting resources when hospitals get overwhelmed.  If we could do enough national testing to determine which areas are likely to go hot first, shouldn't we try to get additional resources to those areas?  I don't know how long the 'extra' help would be needed and so this may not be practical, but couldn't we mobilize military transport planes and temporarily shift resources around from quiet areas to the hot spots?  Once an area slows, the resources (people, beds, ventilators) are sanitized and moved to the next hot spot.

I am unsure how many machines or volunteers could be manufactured or accumulated as I am sure states or even hospitals would be reluctant to loan out anything if they fear an imminent outbreak in their region.  Widespread testing though could help in the determination of impending hot spots.  Would something like this be helpful or even doable?

You forgot the part where Cuomo criticizes Trump first... remember, Trump counter-punches, he does not start. So, the better questions might be... Why can't Cuomo be thankful to the Feds for what they are providing to NYS?  Why does Cuomo have to criticize Trump/the Trump administration? Why can't Cuomo be gracious?  Why does Cuomo have to politicize this crisis? Why does Cuomo have to allow his personal feeling for Trump into this crisis? Why is Cuomo being so petty?

    ?

What grade are you in?  Who started it?  Are you ***** kidding me?  Without criticism Trump would not have gotten off his ass for even longer. Nevermind

Watching the pressers, Trump has made mention of how some states were unprepared. He has mentioned that NYS had the opportunity to buy ventilators in 2015. He has qualified it several times with something like (paraphrased) I understand why not since we have never seen anything like this, but he has brought it up more than once.

For the most part, Trump has mentioned that we need to come together and stop playing politics. He has mentioned the good of the CA (Gavin Newsom) and WA (Jay Inslee) governors.   He even mentioned yesterday that Mayor de Blasio was appreciative of what the feds have done for NYC.

One day he praises Cuomo, and then Cuomo says something *****, the next day he isn't praising Cuomo. Makes me wonder what type of personal relationship these two had before Trump was elected (or if it all comes down to Cuomo playing games with Trump's NYS taxes?)

You hit it on the head. You nailed one of Trumps biggest flaws. He is not able to separate personal relationships from the relationships he must have in his role as the president. I am not a psychologist but his ego causes problems quite often in relationships both foreign and domestic.

Trump’s dealings with these Governors should be completely separate from any personal feelings. He is so fragile however that he cannot treat criticism as anything but a personal affront.  He immediately fires back at the criticism and has implied that those that criticize should get less federal help. That pettiness is dangerous and unacceptable

This is great from Oregon and I am sure other places with low rates around the country and New York State will also step up. That's what we do as Americans.

The problem I see with this is the length of time a patient needs to stay on the machine. Last I heard this averaged 11 days, obviously with some being above that number.

If an area’s peak is projected to be in about 2 weeks, how many would you be willing to loan out?   How do you return a ventilator if the patient is still on it?

Promises for a new one are nice but can those be produced and delivered in time for their peak?  I don’t know but it seems like they will take some weeks to build

My advice has always been to take the precautions you are told to take. If you can find a post that says otherwise please let me know.

It seems you and others, who have been so vociferous in criticizing Trump about not listening to the scientific information from doctors, scientists, and researchers, don't actually practice what you preach. This is not time to look at, analyze, and debate the data! This is a time to react purely from an emotional perspective!

I don't want you or your loved ones to die from this virus. Of course, I don't want you or any of your loved ones to be among the 2.8 million people who will die in this country this year from a variety of causes - many of which could actually be preventable as well.

I have watched this situation develop in other 'western medicine' countries that preceded us, such as Italy and Spain.  My views on this crisis have been fact based.  I could see when they were overwhelmed that we would get overwhelmed in at least some hot spots in this country.  Many here have focused on the differences to proclaim it would be different here.  Yes, there are several differences but to focus on those in the face of the major similarities, was/is a mistake.

The same is happening here.  We are or will be overrun in some areas and the death rates then will climb in those areas.  Some of this is inevitable at this point.  Like watching a collision of huge ships, there may be time yet before the collision, but the die have been cast in some cities and the crash will happen.

I appreciate the wishes for good health.  I wish the same for you and your loved ones.  Stay smart, keep safe.
