1. The thing is, you take that and air it out in public and it becomes a team problem.  Tiki shouldn't have done that.  He should have talked to the coaches in private afterwards and said "This is what we need to do to get better.  I could see things out on the field that they were doing / we could have done and I know how we can adjust and win games like this."

Telling the (rabid NY sports) media your coach just f---ed up is not a good idea.  Ever.  I'd expect Tiki to be smarter.  He knows that as a player RBs can't take many more years of abuse.  His team is depending on him if they're going to make it during his career.

    561738

I think he was very frustrated. He said that on Monday when it happened. Think about this though. They had a half to make adjustments. Nothing changed. I can certainly see how that would fluster Tiki.

This game was at home in front of 80,000 rabid Giants fans and with Giant legends such as LT and Carson on the sidelines. And they laid an egg in all facets.

Should have have publicly said it? Probably not a good idea. But he did. I think it takes guts to do that. In any event, Tiki is right about one thing. They need to comeback with the mindset that that game was unacceptable.

  2. actually, they were thoroughly -- and i mean thoroughly -- outcoached (having no nfl quality LBs didn't help the giants, i'll admit).  of course, after tiki had been administered the nfl-approved forgetting-of-what-you-just-truthfully-said drug, he came around to the party line.

    561454

Agreed. I hate when athletes back track from statements which are right on the money. Tiki had nothing to apologize for. The Giants staff did a poor job Sunday.

  3. Thanks for the explanation of the Giants season, which really isn't part of this thread.  Perhaps you should call in to WFAN and get your compatriots off the ledge  (Check that, don't do it, I could use an easier commute)

The point I was trying to make, and maybe it needs repeating, is that Losman is taking a well deserved beating by many here, but he certainly did not get the benefit of his team mates playing hard for him, like Eli did.  In the games that I've seen Eli play, he did not look too much better than Losman.  The results, however, were vastly different.

As to your comparison tagline, you must be joking that Eli is a better QB than Ben at this point.

    560802

Well, I got a reality check for those callers who believed the "Super Bowl" hype silly writers like Mike Lupica referred to.

    It was NEVER happening.

I back you up on Losman. I can't understand why so many Bills fans are jumping off the bridge cause he struggled mightily in his first year where he had some starts. Eli struggled too. QBs take time.

As for my sig, I stand by it. The Steelers' success is based on their ability to run the ball. Big Ben is hardly ever put in a position where he has to make more than 20 throws. You could argue that the Giants' success was similar in relation to Tiki. But Eli wasn't limited in the pass game. He threw it a lot more.

This isn't to say Ben is not a solid QB. He is. But I think some tend to overrate him.

  4. While I'm not advocating getting rid of Nate,  If we can tag him then get the giants 1st rd pick, then pick up giants free agent cb Will Allen  I'd consider than a pretty successful tradeoff.  While Allen is a downgrade from Clements he'll solidify our corner position opposite mcgee, while we can use the giants first as well as our own to improve in the trenches.  Win/Win really.  Although I'd still like to see them reach a long term agreement with Clements.

    561413

You got to be kidding Kraze. I'll ship Allen off for a used jock strap! :w00t:

  5. anyone see the new claymation Bills commercial? Theres a family with bills gear watching the game, and you hear the announcer say how the game's about over and the other team is gonna take a knee. Then you hear him go crazy and say "he fumbles the snap" and the Bills return the fumble for a TD, and "the bills win, can you believe it". The family goes crazy. then you hear this... "Wait...the officials are saying he stepped out of bounds on the 30 yard line, and the Bills lose. What a heartbreaker."

Then the words come up on the screen... "Without Sports, we'd stop believing."

What a cheap shot. !@#$ you espn. :I starred in Brokeback Mountain:

    561318

I can definitely see how a fan here might get pissed from that. I hate ESPN. They think they invented sports.

    I got one for them:

"Without most of the nonsensical programming on that channel, sports would be a lot better off."

  6. It's fun going to the games and watching Smith in my field glasses. He gets double teamed on every play but manages to get open. He's a superhero.

Bills fans, lets not forget these Panthers were 1-15 in 2001 and the product of horrible drafts and personal moves. Chuck Smith and Sean Gilbert just to name a few.

    560450

The thing also about Smith is Carolina does a good job isolating him on plays. Against the Giants Sunday, they also threw some quick screens to him and with his speed, he can make guys miss.

Plus he's a phenomenal route runner and deep threat. And what about that end around? It works cause of his speed. Plus they blocked really well. And when you're able to control the clock and run roughshod over an unprepared D, it opens it up even more.

  7. I guess I need to have my eyes checked out as people are doing a better job describing what I see.

For starters, I never said anything remotely approaching Losman's stats being better than Eli's.  But I have been pouring water on Eli's parade all year long, because he has been underwhelming.  If you don't think that Eli has been making bad decisions, you must not have seen the two Cowboys games.

The major difference between the two was that when Eli threw up a stupid pass, for some reason, Plaxico usually came down with it.  Losman never got that kind of play from his lead WR early in the season to establish the tempo.

Do you find it a coincidence that when Plaxico & Shockey pulled a disappearing act in Sunday's game, Eli looked very pedestrian?

I see the two of them playing at a very similar level at this point, even if you account for Manning's pedigree and better college experience.  It's just that one guy got a lot more help from his teammates.

    560368

Well, some of what you say is accurate about Eli. There were times this year where he looked really good and other times where he was underwhelming. My biggest gripe with him is his consistency throwing the ball. That and sometimes, he doesn't do a good job reading defenses. Nobody said he would be great in his first full year as the starter. He did progress. A plus is how poised he was late in fourth quarters. He was good in those situations and the 2:00 drill as well before the half.

Did he have many weapons to utilize? Absolutely. And did Burress and Shockey make some great catches? Sure they did. But what QB doesn't have good receivers who can make plays? Not every pass is going to be perfect a la Eli's brother, whose receivers are always wide open. If you had guys that open with a line as good as his, you'd be able to make those throws too.

The key to stopping the Giants was containing Tiki. That's true. But heck. Isn't the key to putting the QB under the gun stuffing the run? Look how ordinary Peyton looked against San Diego. When the most underappreciated player Edgerrin James doesn't have a big game, the Colts offense becomes one dimensional and Peyton- the best QB can look pretty normal.

Because it puts more pressure on. QBs take time to develop. It's not all roses right away. That's why I won't go berserk about Sunday. It's a process.

And let's not forget how essential a good offensive line is. Blocking is essential for any success you have as an offense. The Giants were banged up on both sides of the ball down the stretch and faced a very fast Carolina defense. It showed. They knew exactly what our offense was running. I wonder whose fault that was.

You'd think our staff could have actually made some adjustments. But maybe they watched too much of USC against Texas Wednesday.

  8. What I can't stand is the lack of consistency from the NFL. That was a total cheapshot with the purpose of knocking out Palmer. Well, mission accomplished. I hope Van Oelhofen is proud of himself.

And not even a flag when all they ever do is overprotect QBs all year. What a disgrace.

The only thing the Giants got screwed on was they call Justin Tuck for a bs illegal contact penalty which kept Carolina's first TD drive alive. Meanwhile, on our only promising drive down 7 points, a Panther shoves Shockey to the ground right in front of the ref and no call. That was a joke.

Other than that, I have nothing to complain about cause it probably wouldn't have mattered based on how outclassed our coaching staff was by a real coach.

  9. I don't think it was a matter of giving up on the run too early.  They just couldn't move the ball to pick up first downs to have that many plays.  Sure Barber only had 13 rushes but Manning only had 18 throws (Foster almost had as many carries as the Giants ran offensive plays).  While that's not exactly ballance it's not tipped that far for a team that was behind most of the day.

    559882

Well, they only had the ball for 17 and change. That's pathetic. The fumbled punt return off Wilson before the half was crucial because at the very least, they could have went into the locker room down a TD for as poorly as they played.

What's alarming is Coughlin and his staff made ZERO adjustments. That is unacceptable.

Also, pinning this game on Eli is ridiculous. The defense put them in a hole and our OC tossed in the towel and panicked. They did the same sh-- two weeks ago at Washington. P.S. Burress dogged it on his routes the whole 2nd half.

  10. I've never believed that calls "even out."  How did that "tuck" call even out?  The game would have been over.  Or the 14 missed holding calls in the Colts AFCCG in 2003?  And Brady is nothing without his defense.  Take a look at what was different about 2002 and the other years.

    558942

The bottom line is this. When you're winning, you get all the breaks.

But to say that Brady is nothing just isn't accurate. He's pretty damn good Imo. Of course, if you take away the D, he can't win it all. But who can? Football is a team sport. You have to come to play on both sides of the ball.

  11. A very well thought out post. Young QBs take time to develop. And as for Eli's baptism under fire today Bf, poor gameplanning and if I recall last year, Roethlisberger looked pretty awful in his first two postseason starts as well. Not everyone just goes in there and sets the world on fire.

I think the Bills must have more patience with Losman and hopefully things will workout.

  12. Then again, against the Panthers, Losman went 16 of 29 for 197 yards, 1 INT and 9 points, with a MUCH worse offense.  I'd take that over 10 of 18 for 113 yards, 3 INT's, and NO points.

    559146

I know he was bad today in the second half. But I pin this one on the defense. They were on the field the whole first half and couldn't make any stops to get our offense on so it could get into a rhythm. And our OC is a moron. They tossed in the towel on running the ball down 10 and panicked. Granted, Eli has a lot of work to do as far as improving his consistency throwing and reading defenses better.

In any event, this whole trade Losman thing is pointless. Give the guy a chance. QBs take a while to develop.

  13. Yes. The good old days:

MTV played music videos; VH1 was easy listening elevator music

Cable TV was $20 a month

Saw The Who at Rich Stadium - 80,000 fans - $15 tickets

Got my first VCR - had to manually program the "12 channels most likely to record"

My mortgage was $286 a month (PITI)

My pay was $6 an hour

I worked two jobs, went to night school, and raised four kids

I still wore my disco sucks shirt

I would NOT buy George Michael's "I Want Your Sex" for my daughter

The Bills started and ended the decade as NOT losers

Don't even get me started on the 70's - in 1970 I got my driver's license and gas was 29 cents a gallon.

Man, I can't go back that far .

    Other 80's:

Goonies, Indiana Jones Trilogy, Terminator, The Running Man, The Shining, Hallowen IV and V, Hellraiser I and II, Stand By Me

I loved MTV back then btw Rockpile. That's when it actually ruled. I religiously watched the Top 20 countdown every Friday when I got home from school. Also liked watching Yo MTV Raps :P.

  14.

Still can't believe the Giants wanted him as HC....

    559036

He's better than Mularkey. I guarantee he'd somehow have gotten the Bills back to the playoffs.

That said, I am not a fan of him and today was very disappointing but not shocking cause I expected it. Carolina was the worst possible match-up for them due to what they had in personnel and John Fox.

The sad aspect: Coughlin and his coaches never adjusted at half time and gave up on establishing Barber too quickly down 10 points. That begs questioning. He ran only 13 times. They panicked as did Eli. It was just an awful day all around.

Any Giant fan who actually bought into the hype should have realized this would happen. Especially without Antonio Pierce and Carlos Emmons to anchor the LB. They overachieved this year.

  15. Do you know what Jamal Lewis, Curtis Martin, Corey Dillon, and Kevin Jones have in common?  I'll bet someone out there does.

No, Willis is not the sole reason we're 5-11.  What he is, though, is a young guy who should do more on the field (production) and less off the field (bragging on himself).  Let's all hope for a clean slate in 2006.

    557213

Excellent post. Willis still rushed for over 1,200 yards in an unstable QB situation with little offensive support aside from Moulds and some occasional Evans' flashes.

And that was with a shaky line to work with.

I like Willis but even I was disappointed by his comments and his silly TD dances.

  16. You are SO 80's!

    :D

    558792

    Did you say 80's?

Ah...my era! I wonder what Clements22 will do when he sees this post.:lol:

  17. In general, I think a team that finishes second (and 12-4) in a tough division deserves a higher seed than a team that wins a joke division by going 9-7. But this doesn't apply to Jacksonville, because their schedule was as soft as Theisman's head. Based on their performance against NE, I question what Jacksonville was doing in the playoffs in the first place.

    558764

For as true as that is, they gave the Colts problems the past two seasons. Their D usually keeps them in games and they grind it out because they just don't have enough playmakers on offense.

  18. Leftwich a bust? The guy is tough as nails. He shouldn't have been out there, which doesn't fall on him but on his coach.

Leftwich stands in there and makes tough throws. He takes hits to make plays and sacrifices his body for the good of his team. Maybe if they had an actual offense outside the injury prone Taylor and the aging Jimmy Smith, he'd light it up.

Their line also is not that good either.
