Mario was the guy people were ready to give up a testical for in the offseason and didn't think the Bills would have a chance at getting because Ralph would never pay for him
And "The 'Stache" was the guy the fans were begging the Bills to put in charge of the defence because he was such an upgrade over George Edwards.........
I guess these go down in the "Be Careful of What You Ask For" category.

It is all about coaching. I think we have plenty of talents. Fitz limits the offense due to his inability to go deep. But in the end we have plenty of talents. Give our roster to Belichick and we would make the playoffs.
Is it just me or has Chan's play-calling been puzzling? Like today, he had Fitz throwing deep on a 3rd-and-2. After two successful runs, he called for a play-action pass that got Fitz sacked for an 11-yard loss. It seemed like every time they were starting to get the run game going Chan would ruin the momentum with a failed passing play.

I am curious what other defensive coaches Gailey has worked with that might be available? If they make a midseason change, I would expect it to be someone that Gailey has worked with before.
Dave Campo? He's slumming it in a college coaching job.
-
I thought they were pandering to the "superstar" right after he signed. When they said he would only play one side. I'm really starting to miss Schobel this year. He would be an improvement.
Yes but he would probably have to play DT now.

I agree with pretty much everything...but I still think you have to make a few deep attempts with Fitz to Graham or Stevie...hopefully they can convert but you have to take a shot.
I actually think we match up better vs. the 49ers than we do vs. the Patriots. We're gonna have to have the defensive game of the year on Sunday. Fitz is going to have to be able to manage the game w/o any major mistakes - we don't need 350yds from him. Run Spiller/Freddy all day if possible. Sucks our two O-linemen are out.
Any major injuries for 49ers?
The backup Olinemen should have an easier time with the running plays.
-
Our running game is our strength. We should be running the ball atleast 55% of the time, and handcuff Fitz. I would love to see some power I, with Cory McIntyre and run it down other teams throats for an entire half, with some play action and NO SHOTGUN. ... How bout establishing the run when we were up 21-7 and kill some clock, rather then running the garbage 4,5 wide every play with 3 consecutive passes by an innaccurate QB.
Good point. One way to stop the Patriots offense is to keep them off the field, ball control would have helped a lot.

Mario is getting the brunt of the blame around here. He may or may not be doing what he is asked to do. But what about Anderson? He is on the blind side and he should be bringing it. Isn't that where you typically have a speed rusher? I ain't seeing much except a big loop around the backfield. Not seeing that lightning fast quickness getting off blocks and making plays. Same thing play after play.
I didn't expect Anderson to have a great day against the Pats because their Oline is used to practicing against him. Maybe he'll fare better against the 49ers.

We scored 28 points and gave the ball to them 6 times. Let's just speculate on that for a moment. Had Spiller not fumbled, we would have had at least 3 points, if not, 7 just before the half. Things remaining the same, which of course is unlikely, we would have been ahead 28-7 after the td in the 3rd. Add another TD, that puts us at 35. Cancel the turnovers, and take at least three New England scores. Not to mention that our drives would probably have consumed some clock.
I'm just saying....any game during which you turn the ball over 6 times, YOU WILL LOSE. It's just a matter of how many points the other team gets. You can't win with that many turnovers.
The Bills still would have lost that game minus the turnovers only not by as much because their defense couldn't stop the Patriots from scoring at will. What if the Patriots had only won by a field goal after scoring 24 points in the second half. Would you feel any better about their chances in SF?

Guys......I am willing to give Wanny time to put his defense into place...the guy has gotten it done as a DC just about everywhere he has been.
BUT
The no show of Mario WIlliams is just mind boggling.....how does a 100 million dollar DE not make plays when he isn't getting double teamed
Because his pay isn't based on performance? The Bills rolled the dice on this guy and it looks like they came up snake-eyes. He'll show up and play but he's not going to risk any injuries to himself by going all-out. They should trade him away now if it isn't too late already. At least underperforming Bills defensive players have a history of doing better on other teams i.e. Whitner, Maybin, etc.
-
Yes.
My concern about him was raised tenfold last Sunday.
being a play caller he has the responsibility of course.
I am not sure what the heck is going on, but something is not right.
Communication has been an issue all year back there. I thought this was a simple defense DW is running?
You're close; DW is running a simpleton defense.
-
As for those of you who are clamoring for Wanny to be on the sidelines, the only advantage I can see to that is that he'd be able to see how beat-up, demoralized, and frustrated his players are.
That may have helped. The players obviously knew what was happening to them, Wannstedt apparently didn't.
-
The game was crying for him to put his two linebackers in the game.
He did nothing while they were running for 11 yards every play.
At least man up and stop the run!
And the failure to blitz even once when the pass rush was ineffective was inexcusable.
He sat back and did nothing from beginning to end; tough to watch.
Everytime you pass there are three things that can happen and two of them are bad so, when presented with the choice of defending the run or the pass, always defend the run.

I think John Marshall (formerly of the Raiders) is available.
-
If anyone has a problem with the Bills current coaching staff then maybe banging the drum for Bob Sanders isn't exactly the best idea...
Jim Bates is available. All we need to do is find some smaller, faster linebackers and then...nevermind, we tried that already.
-
I think some of the inexperience in DBs and LBs has cut down blitzing - inexperienced players have trouble making adjustments when one of the players blitzes. They have done some of the Dick Jauron overload plays where DE drops in coverage (Denney used to do that fairly often) and overload other side w/LB - same number of players rushing but attempting to overload blockers.
That's not a Dick Jauron innovation; it's a Dick LeBeau innovation.
-
Yeah, and the Packers D is so good this year.
So you're saying that Bob Sanders is a good DC because the D on the team that he was fired from is bad three years afterwards?
-
That's easy, the Bills. Why? They lost to a division opponent.
-
They had a hell of a DC when Chan got here - Biggest mistake was letting Fewell walk.
In hindsight, they should have tried to retain Fewell but he's not available now. Who is? Are there any NFL defensive master minds slumming in a college coaching job now?
Bob Sanders and if Nix had even a single testicle it would be done tonight.
Hmm... "He was dismissed on Jan. 5 along with most of the Packers defensive staff, who took the blame for a unit that consistently blew fourth-quarter leads." (http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/news/story?id=3867053)

Assuming that the Bills fire Wannstedt, who do they replace him with? What good NFL-caliber DC is currently available?
-
I agree with everything here, but to say that players were gassed seems a bit much. They were on the field all day. I think the conditioning is fine, but everything else...not fine. They have enough talent to work with, but it's not happening for some reason and I gotta look at the coaching at this point.
Yep. The defensive gameplan worked well enough in the first half and not at all in the second half. The lack of adjustment is all on Wannstedt.
-
i think with our OL i am not worried abut run game my main concern is the defensive game plan for stopping Marcia since right now bad qb are chopping us up a bit in the secondary.
I'm hoping that our young DBs are learning on the job and will play better against the Pats next week but hope is not a plan. The Bills should try to eat the clock to keep the Brady bunch off the field.
-
Agree it was the right move and many if not most coaches would have done the same thing, but I can think of at least two coaches who would have run a play there - Belichick and Ryan.
Don't forget Pete Carroll; he would do it too. He did it to the Bills once when he was coaching the Patriots.
-
It looks like Wannstedt's D is vulnerable to the spread offense. Why are the Bills giving Weeden the underneath, has he thrown any long completions today?
-
Have these not been the reason we've sucked nuts for the past decade? This isn't a just last year set of problems....
Not all of them. Remember, the offense wasn't even serviceable until Chan got here.
