If you inherit a winning or winable team, and plan on Winning Now, with the players you got... then yes, I agree, you make your scheme fit their strengths.
However, when you come into a situation where a team has little to no real talent and you have been tasked with blowing the whole thing up and rebuilding and re-molding the team into YOUR winner, then you can do whatever you want.
This year's Defense doesnt matter. If we still are this bad in a year or two, then sure. Complain all you want. But from day 1, the intention was to tear down and then rebuild for the future. Not this year. You may not like how that sounds, but thems the breaks. Thats the reality.
I was afraid that switching to the 3-4 was a bad idea and, unfortunately, my fears are being born out.
You can win in the NFL with a 4-3 defense: it's the scheme that both of the last Superbowl teams use after all.
The 3-4 was only an advantage when it was a rarity; a 3-4 team could draft great players lower in the draft that 4-3 teams passed on and opposing offenses would struggle being unfamiliar with it.
As the 2010 Bills have amply demonstrated, the 3-4 isn't any better than the 4-3 when you run it with the same players and, because nearly half of the teams in the league are running it now, the Bills aren't going to receive any gifts on draft day.
The reason the Bills offense struggled isn't because they didn't practice against the 3-4 on a daily basis, it's because their play calling was predictable, their run blocking and pass protection were anemic and their quarterbacking was inconsistent.

Those Fewell lead D's certainly looked awesome while bottoming out in Run Defense most every Year (28th in 2006, 25th in 2007, 22nd in 2008, 30th in 2009)...Good God talk about short memories...
Well sure but in how many games did Fewell's 'D' keep the Bills within reach of winning for the first three quarters? How many games would the Bills have won the last three years if the *&^%$#@ offense could have put some points on the board or, at least, burned some time off the clock?
The yardages don't show that the Bills' defensive unit was on the field constantly and gassed by the fourth quarter.
Any offensive coordinator worth his salt would stress the run game against a team whose offense is worthless because he knows that there's plenty of time for scoring and that it'll become easy to do so in the second half.
Say what you will about Fewell but I can remember his 'D' keeping other teams out of the end zone most of the time and, ultimately, that's the whole point.

That Giants defense is looking spectacular!! I was hoping that the Bills would have hired Perry as their head coach, and then bring in some "offensive guru" to be the offensive coordinator. You don't need an offensive minded head coach to improve the offense. Now...both our offense and our defense suck. Great.
Fewell as HC and Gailey as OC is sounding good to me, too bad the FO didn't go that way.

I remember reading somewhere that Schobel said that down the road if the Bills needed him he might consider playing and helping out. I know we are going nowhere this year but at least I'd like to see them be competitive. He's better than anything we've got out there now
Sure Schobel will help out...by making BBQ on the sidelines.
His family is in the restaurant business and he missed all of the OTAs and training camp. Maybe they could plug him in at nose tackle by now.

I think he maybe stripping this town of our pride in this team so it's easier to say goodbye.
Is that the motivation for the Kelsay extension?

Every day I see people in the shout box talking about how badly they hope the Bills DO NOT draft a QB this year.
Here are some actual arguments I see against drafting a QB:
...
You forgot one:
- The QB would have to complete a lot of passes to a questionable group of receivers behind a bad line in order to compensate for the Bills' porous defense.
- The QB would have to complete a lot of passes to a questionable group of receivers behind a bad line in order to compensate for the Bills' porous defense.

To Seattle for a 4th rounder pick in 2011 and some sort of conditional pick
There goes another Levy pick...
-
Just another example of poor coaching decisions, switching to a defense you don't have the personnel to play.
Gregg Williams did the same thing.
Just imagine how much better shape the Bills would be in if they hadn't ditched the 3-4 just to pick it up again 9 years later.

Los Angeles. My understanding from some folks within the Corporate world of the NFl is that the league has already "silently" given their blessing to whomever takes this team post Ralph, to move the team. They were hoping the Toronto experiment would be more of a success, but as they see it, the futility of the Bills coupled with a Toronto media biased against the Bills/NFL has clearly indicated the investment should be in more viable markets in the US and not abroad yet. Anyway - LA is the runaway favorite for a number of reasons....
Maybe the team could be called the "Buffalo Bills of Los Angeles", you know, like the "Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim",
I think they'll move, but where? San Antonio?
More like Brownsville, on the heels of Trico.

Punch, by the way that quote in your Sig is probably the best Maddenism since John himself stopped doing games. I had to rewind twice to make sure I heard it right.
Dan is probably dreaming of seeing "Dierdorf 2013" on the shelf at Best Buy.

He may be the leader that you want, but he isn't the talented, NFL-caliber quarterback that I want.
I don't think anyone is claiming that he's going to be in the Hall of Fame but he was trying to win the game out there yesterday and, in light of how poorly most of his supporting cast acquitted themselves, that was commendable.
Unfortunately, his attitude didn't appear to have worn off on any of his teammates.

In fact, I'm tired of seeing players helping each other up off of the field.
When did the Sunday's turn into a time to catch up with friends?
/rant
Helping someone up is just being classy. I remember seeing the Bills of the glory years helping opponents up; it didn't seem to prevent them from winning. Maybe it even took a little steam out of their opponents to know they're playing classy guys.

I've been a strong supporter of Chan Gailey since he was hired. He had a history of identifying the range and limits of his QBs abilities and working with him. So I was more than willing to believe that he saw something in Trent Edwards that I surely never did, and that he'd build an offense around him that would minimize his weaknesses while playing to his strengths. Hope springs eternal.
Yet two weeks into the season he benches his personally chosen starter. He did this on the heels of, for example, Brett Favre throwing three picks and the "great" Eli Manning and his "powerhouse" Giants getting beaten as badly as the Bills did on Sunday (worse, without that garbage TD at the end), with the team the Bills had a solid chance of beating last week (the Dolphins) besting media darling Minnesota.
I'm surely not saying benching Edwards is the wrong move only that it smells of panic. And then replacing Edwards with Fitzie? If, in Gailey's assessment, he wasn't good enough to dislodge Edwards (!!!) prior to yesterday, why in god's name does he think he's suddenly become the answer? And it comes on the heels of benching Spiller after ONE game.
I don't know about you guys, but this change causes me to question everything I thought about Gailey. And by extension, Buddy Nix's thinking.
You should be happy that the Bills have a coach who is willing to swallow his pride and reverse his past decisions in the interest of trying to win.
-
To me it is all about giving the team a chance to win. With Edwards, there is no chance at all. With Fitz, there is very little chance. Very little chance is better than no chance.
I applaud your optimism.
-
Not saying that Losman IS the guy today or that even Losman could have been the guy if the team committed to him like the did Edwards. I'm basically just saying "what if?". Who knows what Losman could have become if we gave him as much time as Trent. Might have still turned out to be a neverwas any way?
Yes.
I'm also saying it would have been a HELL of a lot more interesting watching a guy whose arm and #1 WR on any given play could put points on the board or get your team a win.
Sure, if only he would throw the ball in time.
If he learned to get rid of the happy feet and stopped throwing fastballs on passes to the RBs in the flat and checkdowns across the middle he might have been a respectable NFL QB.
If he "coulda" he "woulda" by now.
Instead we ship him out and backed the wrong QB in Edturds. Despite all of the fan felatio Trent was no more intelligent, a leader or decision maker than JP was, had inferior physical skills and put fewer points on the board.
Edwards owes Losman a huge debt of gratitude; Losman made him look good enough to start.
Let's see how Fitz does behind that line, that's probably what Chan is thinking.

No offense, but after seeing Kelsay at 4-3 DE last 5 years, how would anyone think that he would be ok as OLB in a 3-4?
Very few people focused on Gailey's comments on switching to a 3-4. He said that the reason he did it is that in his observation of the roster, he felt that the talent was more condusive for a 3-4. Then they go ahead and draft entirely for defense, even though the talent at hand was better suited for a 3-4? The story doesn't wash with the actions.
That's why the thread "Why not clean for real" makes esnse. If you're committed to rebuilding, then do it right. Why continue with the charade that Kelsay has a spot on this revamped roster? You can look equally pathetic with project rookies that can hopefully grow into the new system that you're putting in.
They kept Kelsay because they use 4 down linemen in the nickel.

Hit the nail on the head. It can't possibly be that they are still targeting and negotiating with players, or the fact that most teams take a few days to fill their PS rosters. No-sir-ee, you of all people on Planet Earth figured it out. They are trying to save $400K. Brilliant. I wanna pin a medal on you.
PTR
Hey, $400K buys a lot of jujubes.

Well, last night Hardy did it again. On a long pass down the sideline he failed to raise his arms. 6'5" with long arms and this guy has absolutely ZERO instinct to actually go after the ball.
Isn't this something you just do since you were 10 years old? Raise your arms, use your body, jump and get the freakin' ball!
Nah, he was already 6'5" at the age of 10.
-
Ok. If he plays three teams in the division twice then it is 6 games. Over 2 years, it will be 12 games.
I am not saying that I don't believe you, but the numbers don't add up.
Forget it, he's rolling.

My 53:
QB: T.Edwards, Brohm, Brown
RB: Jackson, Lynch, Spiller, J.Bell
FB: McIntyre
TE: Stupar, Schouman, Foschi, Nelson
OL: Hangartner, Levitre, Wood, Green, D.Bell, Howard, Meredith, Calloway
WR: Evans, Johnson, Parrish, Jackson, Hardy, Nelson
DL: Stroud, Williams, Johnson, Troup, D.Edwards, Carrington
OLB: Kelsay, Torbor, Ellis, Coleman
ILB: Mitchell, Posluzny, Davis, Moats
CB: McGee, Florence, McKelvin, Corner, Youboty
S: Byrd, Wilson, Scott, Whitner
ST: Moorman, Lindell, Sanborn
You would keep Hardy and cut Maybin?
-
So, it doesn't look like taking the TVs out of the weight room, doing more squats, practicing more with pads, adding knee braces to the OL or hiring 2 strength and conditioning coaches is doing very much to reduce injuries. I'm not criticizing. At least the Bills are trying something but what is the answer here? It's very frustrating.
The guys injured lately are rookies; they're not in NFL shape yet so I'm not surprised that they're getting hurt in their first NFL camp.
The rookies who do end up playing will probably run out of gas after 10 games because it will be their first NFL season.
It's too bad that the Bills will have to rely on rookies so much this year.

I agree. Gailey did wonders with Fielder, Thigpen, Tomczak & Thigpen...
You must like Thigpen.

I wished we would have kept Perry as DC instead of going to this 3-4 thing. Our D last year was #16 in the only stat that count, points given up. If they could have gotten some help from the O like in the Saints or the 2nd Patsies game for example, they would have looked a lot better.
We didn't do anything at QB, true which I don't like. But then again I think there is some truth in it at that maybe our QBs would be better with a sound offensive plan and more emphasis on our strength, running the football. Anyone ever heard of the theory, run to set up the pass? DJ and Alex Van Pelt never did.
But I do expect us to be competitive this year.
We'll see.
I agree; the Bills run game just didn't work when they needed it the most. If Chan can cook up a reliable running game then the passing game WILL improve no matter who's at QB.
-
I would go:
...
8. QB- Not worth getting into.
Don't worry; I hear Spiller is so fast that he can throw the ball to himself.
Perry Fewell please come back!!!!!

I would prefer Fewell over Edwards as the DC but the Giants might have wooed him away with a bigger paycheck so keeping him as HC might have been the only way to keep him in the fold.
The Bills defense wasn't great but it was serviceable and Fewell was doing it with mostly the same talent that they have on the roster now. I don't know--because no one can--but I suspect that they would have ranked higher if the offense had actually given them some time to rest and some leads to protect.
When your team is 0-5 it's tempting to think about what might have been; they've fixed the offense to the point where it could win more games with the prior defense.
