  1. Has this ever happened before? And no, Palin won't run for Prez, at least as a Republican. Tea Party probably.

LBJ comes to mind. Although he really also got part of Kennedy's term.

I hope Obama runs again, in fact i think he is still to arrogant to realize his policies are not wanted by the American people.

Let Obama run again, please. it will all but lock it up for 2012 and set the liberals back years.

    He never stopped running.

  2. It's kinda like how Gore never actually said he invented the internet. Comedians, then pundits, took a comment , skewed it just a little and... there ya have it. Fact.

True. And Matthews never said he felt a tingle go up his leg. The word he used was "thrill." Still, it warms my heart to see how nervous the left is about Palin. It's fun to watch.

  3. I won't waste my time typing anything long here because I know none of you will read and/or take it serious. The thread decided it's because she's portrayed as stupid. However reality is, it's more because she actually is stupid. I mean there are plenty of conservatives out there, but no one is calling Rove or Huckabee or Romney dumb. They all display intelligence when they speak. Watching Palin speak (like Bush) feels like watching your 5 year old kid recite a Christmas poem and you are just cheering for him/her to get it out right.

The Russia thing was symbolic. She said it, but her saying it was not the biggest problem. It's that she stuck with it and defended that position when interviewed later. This is even after she had time to consult her advisers.

Palin never actually said she could see Russia from her house. That would be Tina Fey on SNL.

  4. i'm still around! thanks for wondering. Not posting much that's all!!

Someone told me France is like 9 hours ahead of us. So, when it's Sunday afternoon here, it's like already Monday morning there. So here is what I was thinking. I call you when it's Sunday here and you tell me what the final score of the Bills Lions game was. I don't know why no one else has thought of this. ;)

But seriously, I was wondering if you were still around. I come and go myself. I don't usually stick around after the Bills are done playing football....which I guess would be at the start of the season.

  5. A watchdog group apparently. The report measures the violations of press freedom in the world, taking into account murders, imprisonment, physical attacks and threats as well as censorship, confiscation, searches and harassment. Being in ongoing conflicts like Iraq seems to hurt the US ranking, as journalists die and get hurt over there. That factors in somehow. Subjective I'm sure, like the various rankings of best US cities to live for retirees or something.

  6. Then as a reporter, you would have gone to the survey's site and looked at the methodology yourself to judge what that #38 really means, and how far away #38 was from #1?

Yeah, that would make a difference in how the world looks at us. Right. I will probably look deeper at it though. I just thought I'd throw it out here, since so many of you are so much smarter than anybody else in the whole world.

    Define "freer."

Because so far all youre insinuating is that its defined by the ability to get a story picked up, not whether stories are beign suppressed by a government or other regulating body.

    Thats wrong.

I'm not trying to insinuate anything. I suspect our fourth Estate is suppressing some information. I understand self censorship is acceptable in the journalistic world. I'm just wondering, how is this happening. We are not a dictatorship.

  7. When I think of free press I think information that is not controlled by the government. Not information that is sold to the highest bidder. If you printed with your heart would you lose your job?

I get paid when they print what I write. If they don't publish it, I tend not to get paid. They print pretty much everything I turn in, because I can always find something, and I'm careful. There is stuff I've had to walk away from. Stimulus money being spent to clear out mangroves, that some locally don't agree with is environmentally desirable or aesthetically pleasing and good for property values. No coverage. A hotel cheating employees, falsifying tax documents. No touchy. Local town Mayor owns construction company that's doing a lot of the work around a new mall. I'm actually pretty OK with that one. A good guy that has a company that does good work. But again, I wasn't really thinking about my own situation. 36th out of 173. Luxenberg is freer than us?

  8. A Facebook friend who is my former professor, and once chair or the journalism department from where I have my degree have a difference of opinion on this one. I don't think the US press is free at all. As a part-time reporter, covering two city councils, I can tell you for sure that there are some stories I am encouraged to ignore.

  9. Funny, I would have expected you to parrot Rachel Maddow's commentary tonight that this is proof positive that MSNBC is a real news organization simply because Fox would never have a policy like this.

Yes. That's what she said. MSNBC. Real news organization. Because Fox (fill in the blank, blah, blah, blah, Fox had 7 million views on Tuesday, while Keith and Maddow had 27, blah, blah, blah.)

Come to think of it, if we compare your comment to hers, you almost come within the realm of having a point.

    Wait.

No you don't. It always just sounds like "May I mommy dog face to the banana patch?"

MSNBC suspending Kieth Olbermann, to prove it is not politically biased, is like Norman Bates not swatting a fly, to prove he's not Psycho.

    Suspended...not fired BTW.

  10. Interesting read but if the current administration hadn't walked into an economic meltdown then you wouldn't have seen half the turnover you saw on Tuesday. If the economy continues to rebound and the job outlook is good then Obama will have a cake walk into his second term.

    "It's the economy stupid"

Continues to rebound? What planet are you living on? Government has yet to demonstrate that they "get it."

  11. Incorrect. Though his actions aided in the RIGHTFUL acts towards USC, their Athletic Department has no one to blame but themselves. Bush was symptomatic of all the problems at USC. Numerous players getting paid, Pete Carroll's questionable recruiting tactics, their false "scholarships".

USC screwed USC. Bush was just along for the ride just like everyone else on that team.

Yep. What's amazing is that they think somehow they can say he didn't win it. What a joke. He won it. That won't change. It's not like he's no longer Miss America and can't finish out his year. He will always have been the winner that year, even if they try to make him an asterisk.

  12. I thought this email was only sent to me .. you're in on it too. Do we have to split the millions when they arrive? :wallbash:

After the 2000th time, I almost went for it.

Part of my reasoning for this exercise is, I think we squander opertunity. My grandfather came here with nothing, irsih heritage, born in England. Eventually he owned the largest business machine business in Cleveland. Mexicans come here with nothing, and make a go of it. Can it be done, today?

  13. A few OK ideas here. Someone I know is in this situation. He knows he'll have to keep working. I thought about the hostel idea because I've stayed in a few and have been very impressed. Mostly Europeans, South or Central Americans, or Austrailians. Travelers I've talked to say America needs more of them. As long as the dollar stays weak against their currencies, they will continue to visit and vacation here. It's a good value for them right now. It could be a growth industry as well. Ones that are popping up are showing better profitability than traditional hotels. I'll throw some of these ideas at him. I have a feeling some of the money will go towards beer and hookers. Buy an RV and start cooking. Many have done this and succeeded.

  14. What if you suddenly came into 15 thousand dollars. But you are in your 50's amnd have lost everything to divorce, or health, etc. Retirment plans, IRA's, everything gone. This is money to start over, but you have to make it count. This is not fun money, or an extra windfall to stick into a savings bank. This may be your last chance to make something out of the rest of your life. What would you do? Would you buy gold? Would you move to Coasta Rica? Would you start a hostel, or a tree cutting business? Would you start a business at all. What would you do if this might be your last chance to not live completely off social security when you get old.

  15. "But because a comeuppance is due the arrogant elites whose undisguised contempt for the great unwashed prevents them from conceding a modicum of serious thought to those who dare oppose them."

    Let me get this right:

This elite represents Gays, Muslims, Blacks, and Hispanic immigrants so arrogantly that people have to "dare" to oppose them even when they share the opinion of the majority (by Krauthammer's own logic)?

Unwittingly, it sounds like he just called his enemies too principled.

Tune in for a variation on the theme in his next column.

BTW - How does Odo from Deep Space 9 find time to write?

Just curious. Are you aware that Krauthammer (Odo) is a paraplegic? It's always a hoot to make fun of how those people look, isn't it. The man New York Times columnist David Brooks says is the most important conservative columnist,” is a very talented guy. Also wondering if you know that he worked for both Carter and Mondale.
