I think that As of right now there is no real concern with the salary cap and the Bills are in great position to really improve the depth through the draft.
Here is the opening day roster as far as I can see it:
QB- Ryan Fitzpatrick: not going anywhere this season
QB2- Tyler Thigpen: Has firm grip on #2 job, It would be nice to see some added competition for this spot
QB3- Brad Smith: Love him as the 3rd QB/extra WR
RB- Fred Jackson: Hoping for extension, not going anywhere
RB2- CJ Spiller: Not going anywhere
RB3- Johnny White: should make team
RB4-
FB- Corey McIntire: Not going anywhere
WR- Steve Johnson: Not going anywhere
WR- Donald Jones: Not going anywhere
WR- David Nelson: Not going anywhere
WR- Marcus Easley: should make team
WR- 5 or 6 man competition, currently Derek Hagan leads list
TE- Scott Chandler: Not going anywhere
TE2- Lee Smith: Not going anywhere
TE3- Mike Caussin: don't expect him to make team but will if nobody else is brought in
OT- Chris Hairston: Not going anywhere
OT- Eric Pears: Not going anywhere
OT- Sam Young: Should make team
OT- Levitre is a possibility if all else fails
G- Andy Levitre: hoping for extension, not going anywhere
G/C- Keith Urbik: Not going anywhere
G- Chad Rinehart: Not going anywhere
G- Michael Jasper: should make practice squad, roster possibility, if loses enough weight may become developemental Tackle due to size/athletic ability
G/C- Colin Brown: should make team
C/G- Eric Wood: Not going anywhere
C- no true backup, but urbik played well there as well as brown
DE- Mario Williams: Not going anywhere
DE- Mark Anderson: Not going anywhere
DE- Chris Kelsay: Not going anywhere
DE- Alex Carrington: Not going anywhere
DE- Shawn Merriman: could be considered OLB, Not going anywhere
DT- Marcel Dareus: Not going anywhere
DT- Kyle Williams: Not going anywhere
DT- Dwan Edwards: Not going anywhere
DT- Torell Troup: should make team
DT- Kellen Heard: Not going anywhere
DT- Spencer Johnson: last year of deal, overpaid depth player, may make team, first or second to get cut if big space is needed
LB- Nick Barnett: Not going anywhere
LB- Kelvin Sheppard: Not going anywhere
LB- Shawn Merriman: Could be considered DE/ Not going anywhere
LB- Kirk Morrison: Not going anywhere
LB- Chris White: should make team

LB-
CB- Aaron Williams: Not going anywhere
CB- Drayton Florence: Not going anywhere
CB- Terrence McGee: Not going anywhere
CB- Justin Rogers: Not going anywhere
CB- Leodis McKelvin: last year of deal, overpaid depth player, may make team, first or second to cut cut if big space is needed
CB-
FS- Jairus Byrd: Hoping for contract extension, not going anywhere
SS- George Wilson- Not going anywhere
S- DaNorris Searcy- Not going anywhere
S- Bryan Scott- could be also considered a LB, not going anywhere
K- Rian Lindell- Not going anywhere
P- Brian Moorman- Not going anywhere
LS- Garrison Sanborn- Not going anywhere
There will be plenty of room made when they cut the guys that don't fit the new defense. If they are close to the cap during the draft they should be ok.
Guys that are probably going to be cut this year(some will make practice squad): Danny Batten, Lionel Dotson, Kamar Aiken, Cordero Howard, Joshua Nesbit, Jarron Gilbert, Prince Miller, Fendi Onobun, Jake Vermiglio, Jay Ross, Kyle Moore, David Clowney, and Keith Williams
Guys that I think might get cut AFTER they replace them with someone better in the draft or they lose a competition in camp: Spencer Johnson, Leodis McKelvin, Tyler Thigpen, Torrel Troup, Arthur Moats, Robert Eddins, Scott McKillop, Ruvell Martin, Colin Brown, Mike Caussin, Derek Hagan, and Naman Roosevelt
Longshots to be cut but it could happen are: Dwan Edwards, Chris Kelsay, Corey McIntyre, Marcus Easley, Johnny White, and Chris White
The 9-10 holes on the team in no particular order are as followed: 2nd string QB, 3rd/4th RB, True #1 or #2 WR, 2nd or 3rd TE, True LT, backup C, 2 OLB, and 1 or 2 CB. If I were in the front office I would try to form a plan to get good players at all of these positions on draft day. For every luxury pick that they make on draft day, they will have to settle with keeping a weakness or signing a free agent to fill the spot... I'm fine with the team depth at G/C but I think a solid center prospect would be a good addition. Flame away flamers!

I think that resigning Byrd this offseason is one of the most important things for Buffalo to do.. He should be a pro bowl caliber safety for 10 years in my opinion. Sign the man. Oh and Yes, I think his amazing hands and ball skills will shine once again in 2012
-
I would be really surprised if Buffalo cut Dwan Edwards. He should be a great 3 technique DT and if they plan on playing a hybrid 3/4 look at times, that would give them another great reason to keep him. Spencer Johnson is gone before Edwards and I think as of right now Edwards is the 3rd DT. He should provide a good pass rush from the inside

If this is already posted sorry, I'm not sure if this will turn out but here is a picture of Mark Anderson in Buffalo today: http://www.whosay.com/buffalobills/photos/147393

I've been screaming this since Williams was first brought to town but every here seems to think its going to be Kelsay and Merriman will only come in on passing downs. Personally I think thats BS, the first few weeks of the season Merriman was doing an amazing job of setting the edge in the run. I personally think it'll be Merriman and Williams starting with Kelsay as depth.
If Merriman is fully healed, there is no doubt in my mind he starts over Kelsay. He's a much much better pass rusher and personally I think he is better at setting the edge.
lately I have been thinking that merriman will play ROLB and kelsay will start at DE, then on passing downs they will either take kelsay or k williams out and line up merriman at DE. Sounds pretty nice to me. what do you think?

I fart in this thread's general direction
Oh man its a good one too! SBD

I'm editing because I originally said OT, then thought about it and realized Martin may not be the BPA. Is the 3rd tackle off the board better than the 2nd WR, CB? I dunno. I'll just say BPA knowing it could be any position.
Good point, i was thinking about that the other day. As fans, we lump these guys together but who knows maybe there are 3 top 10 LT and not any LT in the draft graded with a 2nd rd grade. Some years I bet there are 5 DE that could go before the best DE in the next class... And so on

Ok, I'll play. Brandon Lloyd. He plays a position of ABSOLUTE need. He will cost around the same as Bunkley. He's one year removed from the problem in which he was one of the most productive wrs in the league. The following season they go with Tebow, who is limited as a QB then traded to the rams, who had zero weapons to go with him. He'll cost about the same as Bunkley and will start. No brainer to me. He's 30, not 35
WINNER!

Anyone else notice that the picture of Mario Williams in the Bills' uniform (obviously photoshopped) on the Bills, website has the shadow of our 16th president being cast onto his right shoulder pad? What's up with that?
Illuminati or NWO is my guess. it has been long said that professional sports are here to dumb us down as a population:) LOL

I would love to see Carrington come in to his own and become a dominant player for us but anyone who thinks he outplayed Kelsay last year wasn't watching the same games as me. Kelsay had a much improved season after looking totally out of place the year before. Kelsay is not a linebacker but when his hand is down in the dirt he is a good run defender and an average rusher. I thought Kelsay was one of our most steady players last year on the defensive side of the ball. I think it's crazy when people say he had a bad year last year and that he now needs to be cut. Carrington was having a hard time even getting snaps and Gailey mentioned on more than one occasion that his play has been inconsistent. I think people just like to make trades, see cuts, and love to call for changes but Kelsay was a steady and slightly above average player for us and that's not a bad thing. Like I said, I hope Carrington gets it right this season because if he doesn't his days might be numbered in Buffalo. I'm pulling for him.

I threw it on the Williams thread that he was in town, from a friend who works with some close to Whaley. Said he was in town. Guess it wasn't BS.
I saw that, but thought you were joking

Hey I'm glad I'm not getting destroyed for this. I would say based on my sources, it's 80% that it's gotta be true. If not, I hope we can still be friends.
Well said haha

Key sentence from article:
"With AFL players set to strike before the 2012 season opener, owner Matt Shaner reacted first, cutting his entire team hours before kickoff of a game against the Orlando Predators."
I aint got no problem with that. I dont mean it as a political statement, but he's the owner.
"we're about to go on strike."
"okay, then gtf out. And dont bother coming back. And dont forget your breadsticks."
Am I missing something here?
well put

Laurent Robinson WR Dal
Brandon Lloyd WR StL
Mario Manningham WR NYG
Kyle Orton QB KC
Chad Henne QB MIA
John Carlson TE SEA
these are some sleepers on offense that will be second tier players that would fill an important role on this team
-
Very Good signing, remember Chris White looked pretty talented til he got hurt... I'm good with Morrison as SLB until there is someone better suited for the role on the team. Right now: Byrd Wilson
Florence Morrison Sheppard Barnett Williams
Merriman Williams Dareus Carrington/Kelsay

CELEBRATE GOOD TIMES!!! this is great, Buffalo is really doing it right! Now resign Levitre and Byrd NOW!!! ITS A CELEBRATION!
-
GMs don't go to look at guys that might be picked in the later rounds. First & second rounds...yup. Anything later than that and a GM can't be 'bothered' too many options. So, which of the players who worked out today do you think he was looking at? (that's why only 3 GMs showed up)
disagree, they look at everyone they possibly can. Anything less would be an embarrassment to the organization
-
I don't think the Bills will have their final draft priorities set until they see what happens in FA.
If they re-sign Bell, they will be less likely to take an OT early. If they don't sign Bell or a replacement then they will be forced to take a tackle early.
Same goes with DE, LB and potentially WR
Good point

Roster Fodder I hope, glad to see that i'm the only one that doesn't like the move. LOL Maybe i will reconsider. Meh, kinda hope he doesn't make the team. That would be considered a good thing, would it not? If he is getting paid more than 1.2 mil i don't like it. Anything less, good special teams player, so I will agree with the good move as long as it is cheap... I'm hoping by week 1 the receiving core looks like:
1. Steve Johnson
2. Free Agent/draft pick (I prefer Laurent Robinson, Brandon Lloyd, or Mario Manningham)
3. David Nelson
4. Marcus Easley
5. Donald Jones
6. Winner of preseason Derek Hagan/Kamar Aiken/Naman Roosevelt/Ruvell Martin competition
7. Then we have Brad Smith so I don't even know if they will keep 6 Wr due to Smith playing ST, QB, and WR all well in his respective roles

I just threw up in my mouth

Instead of spending $10m per year on Bell and Chandler, sign Vincent Jackson, then get an upgrade at LT with pick #10 and get a Tight End by the end of Round 4 to replace Chandler.
pretty smart move
