  1. He sure did look great the first third of last year. This came up at our blog summit at ESPN headquarters, that everybody thought he was a Pro Bowler. AFC South guy Paul Kuharsky was laughing that he thought he was looking at the next Manning or Brady with the Jaguars victory.

    Then the wheels fell off.

I think his confidence was shattered by the game in Miami, where he stretched the ball for a first down like he was trying to break the plane of the end zone. It was a boneheaded play, and Joey Porter merely swiped the ball from him. That was the first of a long string of mental mistakes from a guy who had been pretty sharp up until then. Interceptions, fumbles, sacks because he was indecisive.

The offense was tailored for short, quick passes. It'll be interesting to see if a few months away brings his swagger back. And he needs to stay healthy. A decent year in which he missed two or three games makes it very hard to trust him with your franchise moving forward.

Great insight! There were a few boneheaded plays that game, which the Bills should have won. I was in Miami that game. Some bad coaching calls too, having Jackson and not Lynch run for 3rd and one and 4th and one missing both including that play you mentioned which should have been a Lynch run as well... If you have a guy that can carry 3 people for a yard why don't we give him the ball more often. There were alot of calls most people on this board were very dissappointed with, and according to your thoughts, calls that just may have cost the season by killing our QB's confidence.

  2. There is criticism and there is beating the proverbial dead horse. Welcome to the doldrums of the off-season.

    PTR

Well guess what, I have read all of your comments already and I would like someone with real insight to take a stab at it.

Last year I would say that the first half of the season was obviously weaker then the second and that we have a weak coaching staff, also lost Reed who was playing well in the first half. But I am not on this board for my thoughts. End of season losses happened for 2 years with playoffs on the line and just wanted to hear his take on it.

My initial question was to get an honest, unbiased answer since he would actually go on a Bills board and tell us we will be the bottom of the AFC east. Love the honesty, hate to hear the truth but want to know.

    Throw the stones now.

  3. Don't bother, DieHard. You've already been labeled a "Trent hater," and your file has been locked away. Case closed. The Wall has passed judgment. Now we can conveniently ignore anything you have to say about the quarterback position.

I am just making a very good case to get a straight forward answer. LOL such undying defensive Bills fans against any and all criticism. Love the passion and the ignorance.

  4. The win in Denver wasn't pointless to the Broncos or Chargers.

I was saying the the Chargers win means he was fine after the injury in the Cardinals game. So I don't personally believe the Bills losses to finish the season was because of his concusion.

Also trying to beat off people again, "not many have a clue" is also rash for Miami fans, again I am talking about the average fan of a team knowing as much as the average fan for the bills. Tim has been to more areas to see the fans from all over. Thank you for all the help but the questions are for Tim Graham. Really would rather know about your TE thoughts.

  5. Didn't Edwards miss the 49er game? Why was Denver a pointless win? Would you think it was pointless if the Bills lost?

Sorry about the 49ers game.. Very true. Pointless because they were out of the playoffs already. Win to Denver doesn't help the playoffs. The whole point for the Bills is making the playoffs... I really hope everyone knows that.

  6. Why are the games Trent won pointless? If you are going to play that pick-and-choose game of course Trent will look like a bust. But do you really want that? You really want the Bills to have to start at square one at QB again? If you're a JP lover, you can forget about Losman ever playing for the Bills again.

    PTR

No way! Never a JP lover. I do not want to start over. I bought the jersey, I want TE to be the guy. I was just asking his opinion and looking at the second half losses. Pick and choose is not it. I am asking if he thinks there is anything to the second half collapses we keep seeing from TE.

  7. Hey Tim, since you were honest enough to say that we are probably going to be the bottom of our division, do you really think Trent Edwards is the guy for the Bills QB. In his 2 NFL seasons he started the Bills finished with loss after loss until it doesn't matter anymore after a great start to push the playoffs. Second question is why do you think this has happened. I personally don't want to believe it was his head injury since he came out in the San Diego game and played almost his best performance. Is it the cold, pressure, team injuries?

    2007

Cleveland L 8-0 obviously it was a crazy snowy game.

New York L 38-21 pass since they took this win to the super bowl

Philly L 17-9 Not the best Eagles season either.

    2008

Losses to division and 49ers at end of season. Then a pointless win in Denver which is why I said until it doesn't matter.

  8. I have friends who are fans of the Dolphins, Steelers, Falcons, and Jets. These guys know football just as well or better than many here. Every team has passionate fans who know the game well.

As far as Dolphin fans I live in FL and not many have a clue what is going on in games or off season. What I am saying is in general most every Bills fan knows everything there is about the game and the team. I know all teams have passionate fans. That isn't really what I am talking about.

  9. The Jim Kelly/Jack Kemp group has been out there, but I'd like to hear where they're getting their money. And Jack Kemp is said to be quite ill. Ted Rogers was another serious possibility, but he passed away last fall.

    Ralph might outlive everybody.

Wow, how is that for prophetic... I wish I learned of this thread sooner. Your insights are very real and precise.

  10. I'm a member of a Dolphins board from my days covering the team, but I visit that site maybe once or twice a month. I rarely post anything there. Including my time at the Palm Beach Post, I think my post count is in the single digits.

I come here because I like to hang out with Buffalo sports fans.

One thing on this I have been talking about to people lately is: Are there teams that have fans with as much football knowledge as Bills fans "in general"? What I mean by that is not a soul will be a casual fan of football and decide "hey, I think I am going to start liking the Buffalo Bills." Guess unless you live in upstate NY or have parents that raise their children to be fans. It's not the sexy team that say the Cowboys, Giants or say Steelers produce. So it seems I can talk to any given Bills fan and they would know just about everything there is about the team and the sport. Bills fans have such passion for the game and the team. What is your take? What team would have fans that may be similar?

  11. The FO was dumb to trade Peters and all attempts to bring in any new linemen are dumb because anyone we sign is a scrub or unproven and Peters is the greatest OT ever and the FO is dumb and we have the only offense in the entire league that's completely reliant on the greatest OT ever (did I mention that was Peters) and the FO is dumb and oh yeah any fan that doesn't realize that is also dumb because our FO sucks for trading the greatest player ever and dooming our entire team to sucking because Peters was the only player on the team that ever allowed us to score or did anything so the FO sucks?

:o Someone finally gets it.

    GO BILLS!!! :o

  12. I am not saying that he is going to override the calls, I just believe his talent combined with the talent of the offensive unit with overcome the garbage playcalling (i.e. executing plays well enough that they will move the ball despite the fact the call was the wrong call to be called.)

I was actually agreeing and not being sacrastic. Hurry up tends to run on the QB more then the coach and I am all for that. :wallbash:

  13. My biggest problem with this post is "Finding a diamond in the rough" as our early second round pick... That should be a statement for a 4th, 5th or later pick not early second. When Poz was picked close to that pick he was a bonified starter. I am not sure how high he is on other charts but seemed like a severe reach and we could have found a better talent. Even picked him in a later round.

  14. I have a wait and see attitude about this season.

Last year I was expecting us to get into the post season

    This Year....so many ifs

To be honest I would settle for 9-7

The most important thing in this season is can Trent Edwards perform at a higher level than last year. He has the weapons.

Can he lead to the playoffs? Right now I am not so sure.

hope they prove me wrong

looking at our schedule I truly believe we could be a much better team than last year and have a worse record...

Exactly what I am thinking. Passing game with TO, cough, is going to improve though. Defenses are going to have to be honest both helping underneith passing and rushing. With the WR we had we could never use a quick slant because defenses would be all over it with 8 in the box. I cannot believe I am the one writing this but the fact is TO's possibilities for the Bills are HUGE for offense. Last year our defense was probably MUCH better then it look with an offense that doesn't ever score TDs. Makes opposing teams run more and take less chances because they are unneeded. Granted we STILL have a coaching staff that will do exactly that by rolling out JP with a lead and the game closing... Sorry I know some people felt some pain by bringing that up.

Ok, there it is... Still a chance at the playoffs. :wallbash:

  15. That something needs a reality check... Couldn't disagree with you more. Byrd will be competing with McKelvin to be our best DB within 12 to 24 months. Brown is someone who will have to change positions to have an impact and was a good/great player in an inferior, yet still overrated conference.

Umm no he is going to be a safety, and suddenly overrated because of one year?

Firstly no one is assuming that Everette Brown would start. It's been made clear that Maybin will not start at first...that he'll start out as a situational pass rusher. If the Bills are not expecting their first rounder to start why would anyone assume that their second rounder would start?

Secondly the consensus was that Brown was the most polished pass rusher in this year's draft. Brown has a variety of moves (Maybin has none except speed rush to the outside). I don't know what dropped Brown but at #42 he would have been a great value. Carolina traded a number one pick next year to get Brown at #43, right after we took Byrd. On top of all this, Connor Barwin was also available when we picked Byrd. He also didn't last long after we passed him up, going to Houston at pick #46. Barwin was expected to be taken within the first two rounds.

I'm not at all against the drafting of Jairus Byrd but it certainly is a legit concern that the Bills passed over not one but two highly regarded pass rushers when they picked him. And as I've already pointed out numerous times before, the Bills also passed over an excellent pass rusher, Lawrence Sidbury at #121 when we drafted Shawn Nelson.

Hope Maybin works out because it was far from a consensus that he was the best DE in this draft.

Bills Picked a DE to start in the future. He is a high value pick so I am sure they believed he was going to put the weight on and play 3 downs. Brown or anyone else would have been concidered a Schobel replacement. He felll to the second round for a reason. If he was the

    A Bills scouts mouth?

That is laughable and just plain WRONG.

Brown was the most complete pass rusher(variety of moves etc.) available in the draft.

If you project him to best long term in the NFL, then the opinion can vary.

It wouldn't have happened. Cannot believe you pointed out Nelson our biggest steel for a need in the draft. Criticism on Maybin is fine but really it's pointless at this now since he is our guy and I am growing to like him more and more. Arrington, Lewis, pretty sure there were others behind him but wow that is encouraging. Arrington even came to Buffalo with him. So step behind him He is a Bill now!

    GO BILLS!!!

  16. What I want to see from TE is a strong second half of the season. As soon as some cold creeps up on him he seems to fall apart. His QB rating was close to 100 and granted the quality of defenses Buffalo played in the first half of the year was poorest in the NFL. But the same happened his rookie season. I need a strong second half before TE is the real future for Buffalo IMO. Along with that a serious increase in TDs. But I try not to ask too much of anyone

  17. Who do you think our next pick is going to be.

I like what I saw from Alex Boone OT purely from combine. 6'7" 328, bench 33 times and still clocked in the top 10 for 40 yard dash. If you want a guy to build up as a starter for a late round pick, I like this one.

"By no means is Boone perfect -- see game tape against speedy Florida and LSU past BCS games, or his arrest for driving under the influence in April 2006 -- but NFL teams will take into account his steady play, durability and willingness to work. He's a four-year starter who was named All-Big Ten the past two seasons. Boone may lack the athleticism to handle left tackle in the NFL, but he could enjoy a lengthy career on the right side. Had an arm span of 34 3/8 inches and a hand span of 9 7/8 inches at the combine."

Just found this little bit of info, but if we think we can straighten him out, looks like that may be the reason he fell.

  18. How many times do I have this post before people stop obsessing about capital gains?

IF Ralph Wilson sells before he dies he will have to pay capital gains on almost every dollar of the team's worth. Why? Because he bought into the league with a very small investment (25K-50K) so that his basis is almost nothing in comparison. If he sells before his death then his heirs will have to pay estate taxes again on the proceeds, being taxed twice.

HOWEVER --> IF Ralph Wilson holds on to the team until he dies there will be no capital gains tax liability and his heirs will only have to pay the estate tax on the team's value.

(It is actually the estate that pays the taxes... but that's academic).

Ralph's heirs receive HUNDREDS OF MILLIONS OF DOLLARS MORE IF HE KEEPS THE TEAM UNTIL HIS DEATH. Obama's tax rates matter only in so far as they raise or lower the penalty.

You look like a pretty smart person... Why are you a Bills fan???
