I think bad run defense was our biggest problem, because that nine minute drive killed us.
-
The guy who sacked Bledsoe wasn't blocked, and started off at or near the line of scrimmage. There is NO WAY that ANY defensive player in the NFL--not even Sam Adams--takes 6 seconds to get from the line of scrimmage to the QB. You were probably watching something in slow motion.

Did anyone catch Carucci's comments...

I disagree. We already have a capable backup in Shaud Williams. We don't need to give up the third round draft pick we could have had for Travis just to have yet another quality backup to Willis. There are too many other needs on this team. -
What was most responsbile for our loss?

Yeah, but figuring out who is most to blame for our problems (both today and throughout the year) will help decide who should be cut in the off-season. -

Moulds is scheduled to count $8.5 million against the cap next year. Against Cincinnati, I saw a defense that ganged up to stop the run, and Moulds did nothing to punish them for it. Today, Moulds had two drops. There is no way this guy is worth $8.5 million. As for Teague, I haven't seen many plays involving running room up the middle all year. It seems that McGahee has been creating his own yards all year long. Teague has been doing a decent job in pass protection lately, but I don't see him as a complete offensive lineman. We should draft a center, and cut Teague. I could go either way on Mike Williams, though because he's schedule to make a lot more money next year than this year, it'd be nice to see him take a cut in what he's scheduled to make. -
I agree with most of this post. There should have been more long pass plays for Evans called early in the game. I'm not blaming the fumble entirely on Drew, because part of the problem was clearly bad blocking. I say that the decision to start Losman needs to be made early in the off-season, so that he can get every snap with the starting unit in every practice and mini-camp. Also, there's a chance that Bledsoe would win a competition against Losman, based on Losman's inexperience. The way Marvin Lewis handled Carson Palmer/Jon Kitna is the right way.

I voted for that nine minute drive. That drive broke our team's back. -

I'm not saying we should cut everyone. Just Bledsoe. And Moulds. And Trey Teague. And Mike Williams. Henry should of course be traded. If our offense were functioning well, I'd be saying we should keep everyone. Today is hardly the first day that we saw our offense play poorly. -

Decent, yes, but as a team the Bills have not done a good job with run blocking. Teague is part of that problem. -
The argument I keep hearing about why Drew needs to go is that Drew plays badly when the game matters most, and when the opponent is good. Well, today we faced a good opponent in a must-win game, and Mike Williams played poorly. I think you're overestimating how well he's played throughout the year. When McGahee runs right, he usually doesn't have a lot of running room. Compare that to the job the Pittsburgh offensive line did run-blocking.

Tim Ehrus played well for a rookie. It's too early to start replacing him, especially considering all our other needs. It's going to be hard enough to get under the salary cap without adding big-name free agents.

Moulds has too many drops, especially today, and he's scheduled to count $8.5 million against the cap next year. Sam Aiken had a better day than Moulds today. Mike Williams is scheduled to make a lot more money next year than this year. With his suspect pass blocking, that's not acceptable. I'd keep him if he agreed to a large paycut. Teague is being paid like a starter, but he's not strong enough to be a good center in this league.

I got the figures from these ever-reliable boards!

Problem: the Bills will be over the cap even without re-signing their own free agents. Solution: cut Eric Moulds, Trey Teague, Drew Bledsoe, Mike Williams. Trade Travis Henry for 2nd or 3rd round pick. Re-sign Jonas Jennings and Pat Williams. Draft: 2nd round: C 3rd round (from Henry): RT 3rd round: RG 4th round: WR 5th round: QB 6th or 7th round: K Starting offensive line: Jonas Jennings, Chris Vilarrial, and three first-day draft picks. WRs: Evans as speed WR, Sam Aiken as possession WR. TE: Tim Ehrus. QB: Losman. FB: Daimon Shelton.

Bye Drew, Lindell, Moulds in the slot!
KurtGodel77 replied to JP-era's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
I heard that Drew will take $6.5 million of cap space if he stays, and a little over $4 million if he's cut. We could parcel that $4 million out over two years if we cut Drew after June 1. -
Just wondering what part of the game people feel was the worst.

Please don't blame Drew
KurtGodel77 replied to nick in* england's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
I don't blame Drew for the fumble returned for a touchdown. That may have been Mike Williams' fault, depending on the blocking scheme. Nor was it Bledsoe's fault that Moulds dropped those passes, or that the defense allowed a nine minute, all-running plays drive. Having said that, Drew didn't have the best of games today. -

I agree with most of this. Moulds is worth something, but not anywhere near what we are scheduled to pay him. I don't think we'd have enough salary cap space for both Burress and Moulds though. It's possible we could get by with Sam Aiken as our possession receiver. Today, Aiken had 4 catches for 52 yards, compared to Moulds' four catches, 37 yards, and two drops. It's time that draft picks like Aiken started playing more of a role in this team's success. Cutting Bledsoe would save us $2 million in salary cap space for next season, and put us in great shape for 2006. It would allow us to see what we have or don't have in Losman. I'd like us to re-sign Jennings to maintain consistency on our offensive line. He'd have to agree to a reasonable price, though. It's good to hang onto young offensive linemen like Jennings when you're going with a first-year QB. -
They knew they were in the playoffs win or lose, because of our loss. So had there been more to play for, they might have won.

It reminded me of that Giants drive against us in our first Super Bowl.

game over

I agree that our offense needs an overhaul, but there is no excuse for that nine minute drive of Pittsburgh's.

Nice. It's about time we saw a big pass to Evans.
