  1. As long as we're all piling on the little fella, here's more.

    Dates of contract extensions signings:

    Deshaun Watson         9/5/20

    Jared Goff                   9/3/19

    Josh Allen                    8/6/21

    Patrick Mahomes        7/6/20

    Carson Wentz              6/6/19

    Ryan Tannehill             5/18/15

    Today's Date                3/1/21

Apparently Team Kyler is sick and tired of waiting for his extension even though it's very early in the offseason and months before the precedent QBs signed their extensions (again WTF was Miami thinking!!!!!).

Here are the QBs picked in round one to sign a long-term deal before their 4th NFL season the past decade:

    • Josh Allen
    • Patrick Mahomes
    • Deshaun Watson
    • Jared Goff
    • Carson Wentz
    • Ryan Tannehill

    Thank you Yolo.

I believe the following facts are true. In their first 3 seasons:

    • Josh Allen: two playoff appearances including the AFC Championship game in his 3rd year, 1 All Pro and 1 Pro Bowl (both 2020)
    • Patrick Mahomes: two playoffs appearances, 2 All Pros, 3 Pro Bowls, MVP in his second year and won the Super Bowl in his 3rd year.
    • Deshaun Watson: two playoffs appearances, 3 Pro Bowls, and beat the Bills in the divisional round in his 3rd year.
    • Jared Goff: two playoff appearances, 2 Pro Bowls, Super Bowl appearance in his 3rd year.
    • Carson Wentz: set multiple NFL records as a rookie and won the NFC East in his 2nd year (Foles led the team to the Super Bowl win after Wentz tore his ACL), All Pro and Pro Bowl in 2017, missed most of his 3rd year to injury.
    • Ryan Tannehill: Seriously, WTF combination of drugs was the entire Miami Dolphins organization doing?
    • Kyler Murray: NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year and Pro Bowl alternate as a rookie, Pro Bowl in his 2nd year, Pro Bowl and playoffs (Wild Card) loss in his 3rd Year

I draw the following 4 conclusions:

    • It looks to me like Kyler Murray doesn't quite deserve a Year 4 extension.
    • They must have some crazy-ass parties on Stephen Ross' yacht
    • The Goff and Wentz extensions were widely questioned when they happened.
    • The Allen, Mahomes, and Watson extensions were widely seen as justified.

The top QBs in each of the 3 drafts before him got big $ extentions after 3 years.

I don't think he's being an egomaniac any more than any other QB whose team improved after he got there.

Would you mind identifying the QBs in the 3 drafts before him that got extensions after 3 years?

    Thank you.

Good for him.  He wasn’t going to be a HoFer.  He has a SB.  He has generational wealth.  He’s capped out, the only thing to gain at this point is more generational wealth.  Enjoy your life, **** work

And whatever he has to gain will come at some physical cost. Probably he's reached the point of diminishing returns.

As most of us seem to understand an NFL player pays a price for each year he plays. There's that hidden cost.

Also, I'm gonna bet that Marpet doesn't end up bankrupt and broke. Just a hunch. What's the point of playing more years and making more money if you never learn how to save and invest?

I mean let’s win one super bowl first before we talk about not trading picks so we can win 3.

There are many here who are willing to go all in for one championship right now in exchange for possibly never winning another. That is clear.

I wonder if we won in 1990 how people here would feel. Lots of people on this board don't remember Wide Right. What if we won in 2000... the year of the Music City Miracle?

Would one previous Super Bowl title reduce the number of people here who want to follow the Rams blueprint? Just a rhetorical question.

Personally in spite of the Bills never having won a Super Bowl, I'm still in favor of the conventional franchise building model employed by New England, Pittsburgh, Baltimore, and Green Bay. Those franchises have won multiple Super Bowls because they're almost always good. I'd like to see the Bills follow that blueprint. JMO.

The above is true but interestingly the Chiefs came away with the highest rated draft in this article and of course they played in the Super Bowl.

Here’s my 2020 Captain Hindsight draft:

2- Antonio Gibson or Jeremy Chinn or Logan Wilson (I'm probably taking Gibson)

3- Cameron Dantzler CB very good corner
4- Gabe Davis - great pick

    5- Darnell Mooney WR 4.38

6- Bass - sticking with it

    6- Kamren Curl - S Beast

    7- James Robinson RB

Only sticking with two of our picks here. I think this draft was a huge whiff. I get that AJ still has potebtial, but we passed on some true talent to take him and the Moss pick felt very forced, as well as the QB pick.

Did you get permission from Captain Hindsight? Also you're willing to stick with Tyler Bass even after finding out that he's legally deaf?

  7. Just for further context, Hunter Henry got a 3 year $37 million contract from the Patriots*** after compiling 60 receptions for 613 yards (10.2 ypr) and 4 TDs for the Chargers in 2020.

He rewarded New England with 50 catches, 603 yards (12.1 ypr), and 9 TDs.

Those numbers are a bit misleading IMO. It looks to me like Henry struggles to get separation and that he compiled many of his excellent stats based on being schemed wide open (naked bootlegs, misdirection, etc).

He is however very sure-handed and an excellent blocker but more of a poor man's Jason Witten or Mark Andrews IMO. Maybe I'm wrong about Henry. Regardless he received an average of over $12 million/year.

Would you mind telling us what these stats for other MLB (who are not, in their scheme, asked to blitz very often) ?

Since you know that MLBs around the league generally result in big plays and impressive stats in these categories, shouldn't be hard.

Here's a list of top-10 MLB around the league in 2020 which might help

    https://www.fanrankings.com/nfl/articles/top-10-middle-linebackers-in-nfl-2021-rankings

I looked up 2021 stats for Int, PD, FF, SK, and TFL on a couple LB on that list:

Bobby Wagner 11 (add QB hits 14)

Fred Warner 12.5 (add QB hits 15.5)

    Devin White 15.5

    Lavonte David 13

I think these data might imply that around the league

Also point out that in 2018, Tre Edmunds stats for these were 23, which would put him up with Eric Kendricks (who had 19 last year), whom PFF grades as the best

I asked elsewhere in this thread, of others, I'll ask again: what was different in 2018 that gave Tre Better stats?

Because I think most people would say he's a better player overall now than he was as a rookie.

Thanks for taking the time to compile the stats of the other players. I feel like none of those guys played a complete 17 game season but I could be wrong on that.

I excerpted Skurski's piece because I do think it's damning that he's 8th out of 11 in "Big Plays" on his own team.

Again, I'm not one of those calling Edmunds a bust. To me he's a disappointment because it seems like he should be better than he is. It seems like his best talent is using his movement skills and wingspan to effectively deny space in zone coverage. Wow.

That said he's not horrible and he's even better than average. Picking up the 5th year option was a slam dunk but the decision whether to sign him to a new deal is far from a certainty.

Not mystifying at all. They can play defense very differently with their other players in the back 7 when they have Tre White on he field. He was missed big time which is why he’s an all pro with a giant contract. He’s a difference maker on this defense, not some minor piece.

It's not mystifying that Neal wasn't given an opportunity to matchup against Kelce after having held up well in that role previously? Okay, I stand corrected. 😀

Tre White is "not some minor piece?" Okay... and you're telling me this for what reason?

Pretty sure Kareem Hunt was never arrested for any crime from this incident in Cleveland. Not sure he should be considered a felon. Don’t know what your profession is but if you jump to conclusions like this you must not be very good at your job.

I never said Kareem Hunt was a felon so I didn't jump to any conclusions. You've completely missed my "larger point" clarification. Please re-read.

I'm quite successful at what I do, both professionally and otherwise.

You don’t know any of these players to say who is what.  You have no idea.  Because you don’t know about it doesn’t mean a player hasn’t been involved in something shady all the while you hold them up as a pillar of the community.  The other side of that is an otherwise decent person can do bad things; happens everyday.  Sometimes people need a chance at redemption.

You're right. I don't know. Nor do you. None of us do.

In my profession I stringently try not to judge people and I try to base my opinion of people on my own dealings with that person.

My larger point is that it's not necessary to acquire players who've run afoul of the law in order to field a championship team.

It seems like there are a lot of people on this board who think/hope/wish that adding felons and badasses to the team will ensure a Super Bowl Championship.

There's a subtext in this thread that a team needs to have a felonic character or two in order to get over the hump.

It seems like it's born of a "win at all costs" desperation that I don't adhere to.

  13. Bust?

There's a wide variance of meaning with that word. I would call Edmunds a disappointment. That said, there will be teams willing to pay him well. I believe the Bills will let him test the market and might even draft his replacement in April.

As for measuring his performance, in Jay Skurski's BN piece on Edmunds yesterday he wrote:

"If we define big plays as sacks, interceptions, forced fumbles or recoveries, passes defensed and tackles for loss, Edmunds combined to make just 12 such plays. Seven players on the defense had that many or more."

That's pretty damning for a guy who:

    • we traded up for and drafted highly
    • is considered a freak athlete
    • plays a position that generally results in big plays and impressive stats

Look at it this way, only 3 of his defensive mates had fewer big plays in 2021.

Judging by the reactions to your post, it would appear the consensus is we're ok with never winning a superbowl as long as the team are pillars of the community.

Your oversimplification ignores the full range of reasons why people might be against adding Kareem Hunt. I'm sure there are many here like me who believe that this team is good enough to win a Super Bowl as is and doesn't have to compromise character to attain their goals. There are also those who feel this team can improve by adding excellent and law-abiding players.

Having gangsters and thugs on the team is not and never has been a prerequisite to winning championships. Plenty of championships have been won by teams with "pillars of the community" on the roster.

Lol, yeah I saw that, but was curious to know who actually was the one that made that type of play call in that particular point in the game with 13 seconds left?

It probably was Frazier I'm assuming but considering the circumstances with the level of importance for that particular moment in the game, wasn't sure if McD might have stepped in for those last 2 Defensive plays or not.

But as I said, you'd think the one who did not call those last 2 defensive plays would have corrected the one that did or at least try to. I don't know, just seems to me that it was a very simple, common sense that even a regular fan with average knowledge of the game or maybe even a little less than average knowledge would easily know not to do that....

Anyway, whatever....it's over and done with now so....

The very worst thing about the end of that game is that McDermott called 2 defensive time outs... one before the 19 yard pass to Tyreek Hill and then the last timeout and the following play before the 25 yard pass to Kelce. These were the two plays which preceded Butker's 49 yard game tying field goal which forced overtime.

WTF were they discussing during those time outs???

It seems like he's asking, if your core competency is a market modifier, what certainables can be brought to force in a meaningful and actionable way? And if the bandwidth exists how can those certainables be employable as a best practice in order to create a center of excellence that incubates further positive outcomes?

Brandon asks really good questions here. Both from the helicopter and from a granular perspective he contextualizes the conundrum that happens when one monetizes mission critical processes. These are legitimate real-time and scalable concerns.

I have run the draft simulator on PFF about 100 times.  Sad, I know.  So I have concluded we should trade down.  Of course, I Trust the Process and Beane is a wizard.  So doing my best Beane, here is a shot at a mock that I liked - thoughts?  Tyler Smith is listed at tackle, but he is a guard for us in this mock, projected to slide inside:

Round 1:  Trade down, we get 35 and 67 from Houston for 25 and 127

    Round 2 (Pick 35); Kyler Gordon, CB, Wash;

    Round 2 (Pick 57); Travis Jones, DL, Conn;

Round 3 (Pick 67); Tyler Smith, G/T, Tulsa

Round 3 (Pick 89); Boye Mafe, Edge, Minn

Round 5 (Pick 166) Hassan Haskins, RB, Mich

Round 6 (Pick 184) Tariq Woolen, CB, UTSA

Round 6 (Pick 202) Kyle Philips, WR, UCLA

Round 7 (Pick 242) Matt Ariaza, P, San Diego State

I liked this about the best of all the mocks I ran.  Fire away!
