I totally agree. People have the benefit of recency in determining that we need to add to the defense. I argue that the defense is pretty much loaded with really good to great players and wasn’t ranked number one by accident.

This staff may be the best in the entire league in getting the most out of DBs. They made viable starters out of an undrafted FA and seventh round pick. That’s why I can’t for the life of me understand why we need a first round corner like most all outlets are saying. We can find a very good player in round 3 or 4 that would more than likely turn out to be an upgrade.

Like you I trust the Bills staff to pick up quality corners wherever they do. However, and especially with Tre out to start the season, I see the rationale for corner in the first.

if we picked up a corner in the first I’m sure that players starts from week 1 on and when Tre comes back, we’d have some very good outside CB play. Levi has had to be protected some, a more dynamic corner would need less of that, and allow the defense to do more things.

Secondly (we’ll know more after free agency), it appears we should have an opportunity to pick up a good corner at our draft position.  Looking like need and BPA are lining up a bit at that spot. Out of most options at the end of round 1, it’s looking like a corner will make the most immediate impact.

I’m very curious to see Beane’s approach to free agency, especially corner. How much does he spend, and who does he bring in. I think that might be quite telling.

    with a rookie HC ?

We Bills fans know all about Hackett, but yes even with a young coach.

Unless he totally bombs it, that team with Rodgers would be very hard to stop, especially the offense. Judy, Sanders, Hamler, Patrick, and Fant to go with Javonte Williams is a loaded offense.

last season the defense kept Denver hanging around in games, so their defense would be plenty fine with an elite offense.

"Never charged with a crime" ... come on. If you're fine with compromising on character, at least admit it.

Would you still be a fan of the Bills if they did compromise on character? Or is character your reason for being a Bills fan?

I think most of us would still be fans even if the Bills took poor character players, especially if it was one here or there.

I personally like Hunt as a player and, until know, hadn’t considered him as option. I know Beane and McDermott value character highly, and I’d trust if they pulled the trigger it would be because they think he is a better person. People can change, it’s a thing.

However, I would still be a fan of the Bills even if his character remained poor and the Bills picked him up anyway.

Not to detail my own thread, but really curious why people don't feel Wilson is a top 5 QB? He was hurt, had no running game, and a terrible oline last year.

I would put Allen, Mahommes, Rodgers, and Herbert ahead of him. I would take Wilson over Burrow, Dak, Tannyhill, Stafford, Murray, Ryan, Jackson, Carr, or anyone else. I can see an argument for Burrow but really can't see how Wilson would be ranked behind any other QBs in the league.

Cleveland's defense and run game can be elite. The same situation Wilson had early in Seattle. I agree they need to add a WR that can get deep but they really are only good QB play away from being an AFC conference game contender.

Pittsburgh has a few more holes than Cleveland but they have elite players at all three levels of the defense and a great RB. If they bring back Juju and fix the oline they will be a very tough team if they had a competent QB. Roethlisberger was terrible for the last 25 games of his career.

I’m with you in Wilson. Either Wilson or Burros is number 5.

Thought it might be fun to put out some scenarios that would make AFC more competitive than it already is.

Rodgers to Denver doesn't worry me much.

Russell Wilson to Pittsburgh or Cleveland would really upset the AFC. Adding a top 5 QB to either team would make them legit SB contenders.

Why does Rodgers to Denver not scare you? Denver is stacked except for QB. Perhaps it’s because Denver plays KC and Chargers?

I feel like if Rodgers goes to Denver they are Super Bowl contenders easily.

I actually turned the volume off for the Bills-Chiefs game as I was getting sick to my stomach listening to Nance / Romo.  I was doing the PxP in my head.  The only saving grace for Romo is that he will be an analyst and contribute to the broadcast.  Aikman - just blah blah blah - nothing of substance.

It’s funny you say that. Because, most play by plays guys are so boring, you know what they will say before they say it. I do this all the time, and my family has always commented on it (how do I know what they will say?) LOL, it’s not very hard most of the time.

Aikman he can't seem to understand the rules of English.  That commentator he always wants to have two subjects in every sentence.

Aikman he can't seem to tell us anything that most football fans already know.  Those fans they might like him if they're stupored up from too much beer, and Aikman he tells them what they ought to know anyway, so the fans they can feel smart and superior.  Aikman he is so far below Tony Romo in telling us what we DON'T already know that there's no comparison.  Aikman he would be a good choice for people who know nothing about football to learn a little about the basics of the game.  Aikman he is Captain Obvious for most of the rest of us.

Totally agree. I appreciate when they break down plays showing things that aren’t obvious, especially from the broadcast angles.

Besides Aikman being captain obvious, most are. At least, more are than aren’t.

Fortunately for me (not my wife) I’m VERY good at tuning things out. Most of the time, I don’t pay much attention to the commentators, and honestly, the reason I like having sound, is to hear the sounds of the game.

    We need both.

The Bills do not have a championship caliber defense right now. And more often than not, defense wins championships.

I love that Beane wants to keep adding to the O-line. That's a must when you have a franchise QB. But after that, more emphasis needs to be put on our defense if we want to win it all.

I think what your trying to say is we need an elite pass rusher or maybe just more elite defensive players. Because, although our defense failed in KC, it was the number 1 defense. It’s not like our defenses needs alot of work. What we need is another elite or two guys on defense, hopefully one being a pass rusher. But that’s expensive unless it’s homegrown on a rookie deal.

The O Line was really good once Bates came in. It really seemed to steady the line and they played really well at the end of the season. On the other hand, we sink almost all of our premium assets into the DLine and it doesn’t seem to get better.

Imagine Josh Allen with an O line that could assert itself in both the run & pass game. It would require building through the draft, but Allen would be unstoppable.

There has been some talk about the future for the Bills at center. Morse had a good season and Is a reliable good quality player.

The questions surrounding him are based on two factors. Firstly his motivation and willingness to continue in the context of his consussion history. If he is happy to stay the best outcome is surely to keep that continuity and welcome him back. The reason that Morse has been discussed so much is because he is low-hanging fruit when it comes to cap-savings. Over the Cap has him as an $8.5 million cap saving.

The question here is not so much whether or not Morse is a player we want to keep as one of freeing up cap space and finding a quality young player at this key poistion. In the draft, both Tyler Linderbaum and Zion Johnson who demonstrated versatility at the senior bowl taking snaps at center, could be solutions but its equally possible that they are both gone when we pick. Its also not impossible that they could struggle in the step-up to the league.

That's why this trade from bleacher report is an intriguing idea to me.

    https://bleacherreport.com/articles/2953611-the-ideal-offseason-trade-scenario-for-every-nfl-team

The Buffalo Bills could save themselves money and upgrade a key position on the offensive line with two moves that make a lot of sense.

The first is to cut Mitch Morse. The center is set to be the fourth-highest-paid at his position in 2022, but the majority of his cap hit ($8.5 million) would become cap savings if they release him.

The second would be to call up the New Orleans Saints and work out a trade to bring in Erik McCoy.

The Saints face an uphill climb in creating cap space now and in the future. They are currently slated to be more than $75 million over the cap. McCoy doesn't make a ton of money. He's only owed $3.4 million in the final year of his rookie deal, but the Saints would save nearly $3 million by trading him.

That might not seem like much, but it also takes off the pressure to sign him to a long-term deal. The Bills, meanwhile, would get a reasonable replacement for Morse at a much cheaper price. McCoy has only allowed two sacks over his first three seasons in the league, per PFF.

I like the idea of taking a proven young player on a rookie contract from a cap strapped non-contending team. They have a plug and play replacement in Cezar Ruiz too. I would be ok with spending our first round pick on this player helping create cap space through Morse's release.

Not for a first at all. We are tight against the cap too, and we would have to pay him next year, so that also has to be considered. As far as first round picks are concerned, we really need good or better players on rookie deals to really make us strong. The first round pick is out best chance at that each season, so they have to be used wisely.

Sure but we also lack serious depth at DT. We at least have our starting 5 and all contributors returning (assuming they tendor Bates) except Boettger who probably doesn’t have a big market.  Morse isn’t 30 and played a full season so talk of retirement is def just speculation. We can rework Williams deal and I thought the line played well with Bates so am ok if he’s the floor.

at DT we got like nothing. FA could change this but at moment we have Ed, star, Ankou. Even if that position group performed well last year (about even with OL imo) we would need to restock.  With the state of OL and the Kroger hiring I think a day 3 pick to develop would be fine for iOL.

It’s true about our depth at DT, that’s what makes these discussions a little hard before FA. Obviously anything can happen in FA, but I feel like there is a strong chance Harrison Phillips is resigned, leading to my comment about IOL. If he isn’t resigned, DT would be a glaring need.

I don't think anyone is saying Dawkins can't play tackle a few more years. The point I think is that the Bills need to upgrade the line... if you are doing that in the 1st positional value decrees that has to be a tackle unless you are talking an elite level prospect elsewhere. And the Bills shouldn't avoid drafting a tackle just because they have Dion who is decent and Brown who was serviceable as a rookie. If tackle makes sense at #25 in terms of the players on the board you take him and then work out who plays where later (which would most likely be Dion at guard).

That said I think the 4 tackles who would be day 1 upgrades are all gone by the time we pick. It is more likely to me that receiver or corner provides a guy who is 1. A genuine 1st round talent; 2. An immediate upgrade; 3. At a premium position.

I was hopeful Trevor Penning would slide. But he killed any hope of that by dominating the senior bowl.

I may have missed it from your earlier conversation upthread. But would you consider Linderbaum at 25? I see that you would only consider elite level talent on non premium positions in the first. Just curious.

I trust Beane and the Bills to make the right call and I too hope it’s someone who can make an impact day 1. I’m hoping it’s Linderbaum, but I’d be fine with a handful to he honest.

Pretty sure former All Pro Daryl Williams had a long stretch where he was grading out like the best RT in the league.

Oh, wait, that was 2020.........then he was awful at RT in 2021. ;)

Dawkins is a good player who struggles with conditioning.........a lot of times players like that hit a wall in their mid-late 20's where the natural athleticism alone ceases to be enough.

For some they can change their habits and not lose a step.........others can't and it's a career killer..........for others it just changes their role.

Not saying your wrong, but Dawkins was hospitalized for Covid. He started slow for a legitimate reason. Him coming on strong down the stretch helps to show how well he could have been all season without Covid.

I’m excited to see him play this year fully healthy and hopefully with better guard play around him.

I get why people are going OL but it seems like one of our more complete position groups. Considering how many DL we use, how few we have under contract, and our history I won’t be surprised if we go that way again. Not that I’m super excited about how well we’ve done with that position group.

It’s because Morse could retire anytime, Williams is in year 2 of a 3 year contract, that was for a tackle. Additionally the 3rd year only has a dead cap hit of $1.8 million, so there’s a good chance they move on after this year. Our second guard spot will be an open competition with Bates going against whoever they bring in through FA/draft.

What I’m getting at is, we could use an upgrade at guard for this year alone (Bates is great depth if he gets beat out), but need more inside help in the coming years.

Linderbaum can play both guard/center. Potentially coming in as a guard year 1, learning the system, and transitioning to center in the next year or more (depending on Morse).

At the end of the season when we had success, it was with more use of heavy sets (most likely to help the line). If we can rely less on heavy sets, it will help open up our options for attacking. Not that we don’t use them, just not needing them to give Josh time to throw.

How’s it asnine? Tell me exactly what makes Carr not one of the problems in LV?? Or during his time in Oakland?? Look at his stats, he’s wildly inconsistent. He can’t read defenses, he has happy feet and checks down to the RB when he can’t find anyone. He had a grand total of 28 turnovers this season, 14 INTS and 14 fumbles. I don’t see what you guys see in him. He can’t beat the Chiefs consistently. He has a 57-70 record as a starting QB. He’s a poor mans Andy Dalton and Alex Smith. Infact I remember Smith and Chiefs owning Carr before Mahomes came around. Also IF Rodgers does end up in Denver then that easily makes Carr the worst QB in that division

The Raiders had poor offensive line play this year, including tons of penalties on them. Also, competing Carrs record across his career, when just about everyone acknowledges that football is a team sport, doesn’t help a’lot. The Raiders as an organization haven’t exactly don’t Carr a’lot of favors. Imagine if they kept Cooper or Mack, I imagine Carr record would be better in the seasons post losing those two. Additionally, consider Carr on teams like the Colts, Broncos, Bucs, even Carolina. Those teams would be significant threats to just about any team. He isn’t a star by any means, but you can win with him. I honestly don’t see Carr being much different than Stafford.

how many of those years did we end up with a top 5 pick? 3?

If you can be horrible and get a top 3 pick 2-3 years in a row...you can turn it around a lot quicker.

This will lead to a new coach and possibly GM, meaning a good chance of changing the teams identity, so reshaping the roster.

All in all, there’s tough choices to make when your QB isn’t one of the star qb’s, but there just isn’t any guarantee that young guys will pan out. The last handful of years have many feeling it’s easy to get a top young QB, because there has been so many. However, think about the QB’s drafted from the mid 2000’s to early 2010’s. There wasn’t a’lot of stars like we’ve seen recently.

Personally, I think every situation has to be examined on its own, and blanket approaches don’t work in regards to paying good qb’s top qb money.

Think about a team like the Broncos or Colts, Carr would help them SO much and have them competing for the playoffs and more. The other side of the coin is a team like Houston or Detroit, Carr would be an upgrade, but they need so much more as it is. I think it really comes to, “It Depends”.

Back in our drought days, I would have LOVED to have a qb like Carr.

Agreed with Beane. Look at Andrew Luck. Look at Joe Burrow. I don't want that for us.

Tom Brady, Patrick Mahomes, Peyton Manning, Russell Wilson, and Ben Roethlisberger had great protection and that's why their careers are great.

It's also a new era for the Buffalo Bills: The "Unleashed" Josh Allen. No more conservative play calling. Let Josh Allen throw for over 5000 yards, 45 touchdowns. It's time now starting next season. We have Stefon Diggs, Gabriel Davis, Knox, and MacKenzie. We have the WR corp to make this happen.

The final thing is strengthen the O-line.

I agree with your point, but Russ has a had poor o-line play most of his career. Seattles line has gotten better the last two seasons, primarily because of young drafted players making an impact (there was one late round pick that stepped up). I live in the Seattle area, and much of the offseason talk during the Russ era is ALWAYS offensive line.

One other thing, MacKenzie isn’t a guarantee to come back. He is a FA, and Beane has a lot of tough decisions to make in free agency this year.

In my opinion, if we get a line that can consistently open holes in the run game, and also give Josh enough time in the pocket, Josh will light up the league. Not only can he do it all, but he is really starting to show he can attack any type of defensive game plan. What I’m trying to say is, Josh will be unleashed, as long as the line gives him the opportunity. Otherwise, he’ll be kinda of like the last two seasons, up and down until/if the line/scheme settle in and adapt to cover their weakness.

  16. 8 hours ago, JayBaller10 said:

Biggest problem was the defensive plan got caught flat-footed. Seems like they were working under the assumption the squib would take time off the clock, so the prevent D would’ve worked in that scenario. It’s like they didn’t have a backup plan for if no time came off the clock and doubled down by calling the same defensive alignment after both timeouts.

This is what confuses me the most. It seems more likely a squib was called, but didn’t happen (communication related to Heath), but then how do Frazier and McDermott not adjust the defense? There was two timeouts, 1 before each play, I mean what were they talking about?

My hope is that this loss if even more fuel for Josh Allen and all the hurdles he’s overcome in his football career.

The issue with the Pats defense is the same as ours - it's predicated more on scheme and coaching than on talent. Compared to defenses like the Rams and Bucs which have a bunch of elite talent. If you want to stop elite QBs, you need a pass rush that can convert pressure into sacks. Judon was playing really well for the Pats early in the year but after his bout with covid he fell off a cliff. That's why they had no answer for Allen, and it's the same reason we had no answer for Mahomes. The Bengals pass rushers were able to get their hands on him. It made a big difference.

I agree, we need a star pass rusher who can get to the qb, or force the issue in key moments (thinking of Donald last night at the end of the game). My fingers are crossed either Rousseau, Oliver or both can be that person (or maybe close enough combined).

One thing to take solace in, even with star pass rushers, teams will have their hands full with Josh Allen playing like he did in the playoffs. Not many, if any, can do what he does when he’s like that.

Agreed unfortunately…. Been saying for a while I would love to see them take a Rams like approach to the offseason, not throw away the entire draft but move some picks to get some great veteran talent in here….unfortunately the group is conservative from the top down and as you said, it’s not their type of approach to things.

Agreed, I think Beane could benefit from finding a middle ground between his current approach vs the Rams approach. Like not trading away 5+ years of 1st round picks, but rather selectively picking up that one big piece to push us over the edge (in this case, most likely that piece would be someone who gets to the QB).

Now that the Bills are approaching the point of having their previously drafted guys entering their prime (or close to) I’m curious if Beane’s strategy changes at all. Perhaps, the first step for Beane is a mid season acquisition, picking up someone who can bring something to the table we don’t have at that point.

Note: I know we picked up K. Benjamin, mid season, but I’m referring to a mid season acquisition with the attempt to push the team over the top.
