No, it’s not…sorry bro, but Coach pretty much nailed it.

Well, you know what they say about opinions

Cody Ford did not throw 2 interceptions in the 3rd

Cody Ford did not fumble on the Jax 37 yd line in the 4th

The Bills committed 12 penalties for 118 yds.  Cody Ford was responsible for 1 - 10 yd penalty so 11 for 108 yds did not involve Cody Ford

Why are ppl against Josh running?

It was extremely effective,  especially in the Red Zone.

He's definitely going to keep designed runs. It's a big reason why this O is so deadly

People are against Josh running as much as he does, especially on designed runs, because it's treating him like a running back.

Running backs have some of the shortest lifespans as effective NFL players because of the constant contact and hard hits they take.

Running QBs traditionally have shorter effective careers.

It's one thing when Josh scrambles and can choose to slide or to get out of bounds.  That arguably results in less hits than standing in the pocket.

It's another thing when the Bills call multiple designed QB runs for him

It's a worse thing yet, if Josh is basically the Bills only option to mount an effective running game because the OL and the backs can't get 'er done.

Been seeing those comments about Dorsey all camp but not really any evidence to go with it, I'm beginning to suspect this may be an elaborate prank coming from someone who likes the numbers 7 and 1.

Imma go with "where there's smoke, there's fire"

I don't think you hear Josh, Mitch Morse, and Gabe Davis all describe this (AND McDermott imposing a "large fine" for any coaches who get penalized) if there's not some basis.

I assume this article is part of the "comments all camp" you're referencing?

    Quote

“Dorsey just wants to attack every single play,” Davis said. “He doesn’t want to let up on anything. And that’s the biggest thing. I’m happy that he’s going to give us a lot of opportunities to go out there and make big plays. And that’s what you need too, because not every game is going to be your best game.”

What players do know about Dorsey’s demeanor is that he’s ultra-competitive and shares Daboll’s philosophy on offense that the Bills are going to do anything and run anything they need to to win. On the sideline, Dorsey’s calm and cool demeanor sometimes gives way to a different version of the coach. Not many players have seen it and most don’t want to, Bills center Mitch Morse said. Davis joked that’s why Dorsey needs to be up in the coach’s box.

“He’s such a nice guy. He’s a brilliant football coach. But he’s just so competitive,” Morse said. “The best way you can describe it is the Holy Spirit can come out of him and you don’t know when it’s gonna come out. … I mean, absolutely killer competitor. It’s kind of fun to see him blow his top every once a while but it comes from a good place. It’s never malice. It’s just he wants us to succeed so badly.”

I think the plan with Po is very much to wait. Ed Oliver will be the #1 priority next offseason. Then Knox, Edmunds and Gabe.

But the top 51 are not all making the roster. There are some easy moves. Haack was the first of those.

The top 51 are not all making the roster, but then guys who are lower down and currently not counted move up and take their space.

We will currently need to have cap space for 54 guys because Boettger gets paid his full salary on PUP.

My conclusion is we'd have about $2M in cap space (not including PS, if they have to be included)

I had a try at detailing that all out if you want to have a look:

That was a really good watch!  Cowherd usually annoys me but he did well asking Josh some reasonable questions we don't hear all the time.

    Hyde

    Poyer

    Johnson

    Hamlin

    Your thoughts

So I'm gonna take a bit of a different angle - looking at the salary cap

I think this is a pretty good starting place, actually.  Changes (indicated in red above)

    1) Blackshear -> PS, Gilliam counted as an RB (FB) per Dorsey interview

    2) Morris added as a 3rd TE.  I personally think we might see an OJ Howard trade and keep Morris and Sweeney, but, unsure so I kept Howard and Morris for now

    3) Ford traded and replaced by Bobby Hart (sorry guys)

So now, let's look at which guys who are in the top-51 currently would be gone:

    Andre Smith (suspension) - $0.363M (6/17 of $1.03M)

    Duke Johnson (cut)           -   0.920M

Greg Van Roten (cut)         -   0.895M

    Jordan Miller (cut)              -  0.965M

    Cam Lewis (cut)                 -0.895M

    Matt Barkley (cut)              -0.920M

Current top-51 cap space per Spotrac: $4.156M

Added by the above cuts:                       $4.958M

Now we have to look at the next 8 guys who will now count in the 53 man roster:

    Tommy Doyle $0.825M

    Tyrel Dodson $0.895M

    Dane Jackson $0.825M

    Damar Hamlin $0.895M

    Khalil Shakir  $0.705

    Matt Araiza $0.705

    Christian Benford $0.705

    Isaiah Hodgins $0.705

    Quintin Morris $0.705

(Ike Boettger won't count against the roster, but his salary will still be paid and will count against the cap, so we will have 54 players counting against the cap)

Need to subtract from our cap space: $6.965M

Estimated cap space remaining on the 53 man roster: $2.15M

I give up on understanding whether or not the team needs to include the practice squad this year and how many people can be on it.

I googled.  But, if it's 16 players and we're relatively evenly split between rookies, players with more than 2 years experience, and players who draw the maximum pay, we would need something like $4.17M for the practice squad.

If we were to trade OJ Howard and keep Tommy Sweeney on the roster, that would save $1.98M for Howard and cost $0.965M for Sweeney, so save $1M

Beane has said in the past that he likes to go into the season with ~$3-5M to cover any need to sign injury replacements.  So he's gotta find a couple of million somewhere.

    2. Looks like Mancz will render things moot, he'll be in the traditional Bates Swiss Army role as his injury is not seen as serious.

    3. Anyone knowing (not necessarily executing, but knowing) their assignment was a leg up on Ford in most cases. Boettger, I think he knows his assignments and tries to execute and sometimes succeeds, hence JAG.

I could entirely be wrong, but I didn't think the problem was usually Ford not knowing his assignment.  He just had sloppy technique with his hands and slow feet, so he got beat regularly.

I was thinking if he was going to sign one of those guys, he would have done it already.

Restructure or something, something could be a trade, I guess.

I'm not one to imagine in any way I know more than the guys at OBD.  I get a kick on trying to guess what they are thinking.

    Sounds like you do too.

Yeah, I like to try to read the tea leaves

I wouldn't rule out an extension.

Buried in the publicized 53-man roster cut deadline of August 30, is the quiet actual expiration of the 51 man salary cap (vs 53 man plus practice squad having to fit under the cap).  This year that will be 12 am September 8, with 4 pm September 7th being a deadline to file any contract changes

As far as would have done it already, Beane has previously signed players to new contracts in the week between roster cutdown and this quiet, less publicized deadline.  For example, Tre' White was signed on September 5th 2020.

If a player and agent are playing hardball, they may not want to reach an agreement too soon, but there's an additional impetus for the players to sign before the season actually starts, especially if the new contract has fully guaranteed salary for the next season and/or injury guarantees and they're in their last year.

Avert, but you don't need to be a tea-leaf reader to know that a player who suffers a season-ending injury during his last year under contract, is likely going to take a big hit on a new contract especially if he won't be available at the start of the following season.  So a player may be willing to negotiate a little bit more to get 'er done.  I don't see Knox being "into" contract negotiations right now, and I think Beane has made it clear that he's gonna "wait and see" on Edmunds.

    Poyer I think could happen.

Beane said restructure so I don't see any new long-term extensions this year for Edmunds, Poyer, Knox or even Singletary.

I'm down with that.  Let them all play and worry about who you are keeping next spring.

Beane's exact words (when asked if trading Ford got him where he needed to go for the 53-man cap) were "I'm going to do something probably this week" and "I'm probably going to do, Um, ah [looks down] a restructure this week"

I think we're gonna see a move this week, but I'm not sold that it's going to be a restructure.  He said first he was going to do SOMETHING, then he said "probably going to do a restructure".

Poyer has a $10.8k cap hit right now, according to Spotrac.  Just sayin'.

So Ike's out... 4 initial + 5 additional so 9 weeks.  Then they'll activate him and he gets 21 days to get on the roster.  12 weeks max, which i believe is the cutoff for IR re-activation as well.  If at that point he's not ready he's done for the year.

I believe along with the change from 6 to 4 weeks they eliminated the 5 week activation period.

    3 minutes ago, ColoradoBills said:

They can only start practicing after they are designated to return.  Then they can practice during the 21-day window.

In Tre's case his would only need the week and could start week 5.

They can also rehab at the facility and attend meetings.

See that's the thing though.  Beane made the point they aren't going to activate him and start him the same week, he needs time to work back into game shape.

During the season there are like, what, 3 practices during the week?  A walk through/corrections Monday, light practice Weds, then Thurs and Fri.

I'm just no sure how the "designated to return" thing works on PUP now, with all the changes.

It's my understanding that IR'd players can not.

But the rules seem to have changed, so perhaps that changed as well.

  13. 1 hour ago, Virgil said:

My intuition re: Tre says that OBD is weighing PUP vs short term IR.  Plays in week 5 if PUP and misses first 6 games and bye week if on IR (1st game vs GB at hjome then).

I would prefer they shelve him as will need him in late season and post season more.

I think you may have the timings wrong.  It's very confusing.  Here's what I'm going by, and it's different than it was last year.

2020's changes to IR rules say that a player on IR must miss a minimum of 3 games.  But apparently it's now increased to 4 games, and there is a limit of 8 players who can be designated to return.

On the other hand, a player who goes into the season on PUP misses 4 games (decrease from 6 weeks in previous seasons) and can be activated immediately (this is a change, there used to be a window).  And players can be placed on PUP starting now (the cut-down to 80 players)

Practically speaking, there's not a lot of difference between the two, and that means teams no longer need to do the cut-vet-on-handshake-and-re-sign skullduggery.  The player can start the season on PUP and come off on the same time interval as IR, and without the 8-player total limit.

So really what the Bills are weighing is whether Tre starts the season on PUP and misses 4 games, or not.

I'm glad you posted though, because it motivated me to dig into the current state of these rules and I learned something.

    8 minutes ago, Rochesterfan said:

But why - the NFL adjusted PUP to 4 games to mirror IR - so what advantage do you see cutting a player to IR Tre versus using his PUP designation if needed.

Yes, that's the part that's new for this season.  PUP now mirrors IR and players coming off can start training/play immediately if that's deemed correct.

It eliminates the whole cut a guy/IR another guy/resign shenanigans

And in fact it's an advantage to start on PUP because the # of IR'd players allowed to return is capped at 8 for this season.

So the real decision is whether they think Tre needs to miss 4 games or can come back sooner.

Do you honestly think the Bills are going to go cruising for a depth piece for the 53?

So just listened to Brandon Beane's presser today.

I know some here will be distressed or even triggered by the news:  Beane was asked, when looking at the back end of the roster, how much weight do you put on guys who might be only special teams contributors,vs guys who might be able to contribute more at their position group offensively or defensively?  Of course Beane prevaricated some about the "only special teams", but he flat-out said if you aren't going to be starting every week, you have to be able to play special teams and "if it's close" we're going to err on the side of a guy who's a dominant special teams contributor. (this is about 12 minute in).

See, I haven't been watching film, so good assessment, appreciate that.

BTW, are you doing coaches film on NFL+?  Have they repaired last year's downgrade yet, so that you can actually select plays and toggle between end zone and overhead views, and do slo-mo?

    46 minutes ago, Ralonzo said:

Anderson and Owen I think have been the two rooks who have shown out the best but I don't think they must make the 53, they seem like a decent bet to get to the PS in the waiver tsunami next week. It's easier to hide your guys in the crowd when everybody's cutting everyone. If it's only 8 OL held at cutdown, that's one more bubble guy (Hodgins, Blackshear, Lewis) who avoids waivers before the post-cutdown roster juggling. They can re-add OL after that. Boettger could be PUP or simply waived/injured - I'd be ok with that, I thought he was a JAG before his injury.

I don't think the Bills agree with you on the Boettger = JAG guy.  They actually signed him as a ERFA AFTER his injury, so if the intent were to waive him injured, why would they do that?  I don't see anything as changing since the Bills made that decision, it's not like he's been out there getting outplayed by Ford.

  19. 28 minutes ago, mrags said:

I like Morris quite a bit but 100% in Sweeney. They are both JAGs really. But Morris might actually have some upside. Sweeney will never be anything more than JAG. The terrible thing is, up until a few years ago, he’d be a guy that we would be excited about as a starter.

I share your assessment about Sweeney.  I had hopes for him last season and he squibbed, and nothing he's done during the open part of training camp showed different.  I think he's a guy who can get things done against the #2s and #3s of the NFL, but comes up small when the Bills need him most against top players.

The Bills moved on from Lee Smith in the hopes Sweeney was ready to take on some of his blocking role, but that worked so well the Bills wound up filling that role last season by bringing in Tommy Doyle or Ryan Bates.

I like what I've seen of Morris, but I believe he's a converted WR.  He's 2"-4" shorter than the other TE.  The Bills have him listed at 252, but I dunno.  So the question is again with Morris is, can he block in line, and can he block in space?  I don't think it's a size thing so much as a brain thing.  Does he have the mindset for it?

The thing is, if he's better than Morris and Sweeney, why are they starting with the 1's while Howard runs with the 2's and 3's?  Why are we hearing about plays Sweeney and Morris made in training camp/practice but not Howard?  When asked about him, the Bills beat reporters say "nothing to report"
