Knox dropped balls, missed blocks and did everything rookies do. He also stretches the field, had great catches with broken tackles and plays with attitude. Kroft will be better with time to get Dabol's and JA's trust along with being healthy. Remember that with 3 or 4 top receivers and 2 good backs, the TE position will get one one coverage with linebackers and safeties. The position will be better next season.

As to the question, I think it's roughly the same. They have not added the premier edge that would push the defense over the top.

As to Knox; Personally feel like he's gonna take a giant step next season. The guy had very little experience as a receiver, made some rookie mistakes turning upfield before catching the ball, etc. The missed block in the playoffs was brutal, but the import is exaggerated by the timing. He's gonna be a player.

Just a comment that the report is "up to" $18M.  We offered Shaq $27M/3 yrs, he turned it down - so apparently even what he turned down is less than the maximum here.  Shaq actually got $10M/3 yrs.

I would say wait to see what the details are before concluding it's Shaq money.

I do feel that for the money they got, we could have re-signed at least Shaq

You'd have to surmise that perhaps Shaq wanted to go to Miami. If we're talking about a difference of one mil per year over 3 years, I'm sure something would have been worked out if he wanted to stay.

Maybe Ford can be that interior guy, but as of now looks like he’s back at Tackle.

The concern is if one of our older ends falls off during the season.... so I wouldn’t be upset if they went edge in the 2nd or 3rd.....but they need more on offense.... one dynamic back and another high round WR and they’ll be set.

I have zero faith in Murphy. Hughes is getting up there, and isn't the player he once was. Addison is 32. It's not an impressive unit and I'm a big "pressure the QB" guy. Hopefully Oliver makes big strides in year 2. Don't disagree with your take on the offensive needs, but I'm still concerned enough about DE that I would prefer they go that route in round 2.

Really depends what they do the rest of FA.... still kindve hoping they go offense early. (WR and RB with day 2 picks)

They need a back that has break away speed and can take it the distance in one play....

Forgot about RB. Definitely want to see them add that take it to the house back either in the draft of FA'cy. I like Devin. He's a good player. But it would be ideal if we added a HR threat and a between the tackles back. The latter is much easier to find.

I still want that stud edge, but it doesn't look like they're going that route in FA'cy.

So that's basically three areas of need/want right now. Not bad.

  5. The thing with the offense is that they're not far off. They needed to add a stud. Diggs is a stud; a playmaker; a baller. Choose whichever word you like.

The defensive signings are largely replacements and depth.

My only areas of concern at the moment are a STUD edge and an interior offensive lineman capable of pushing people around. The roster is starting to look really solid, but I'd like to see something done there. If we don't sign a big time edge, and it appears we wont, I'm hoping that's where they go in round 2.

They could sign a RT and move Ford to Guard.

True that, but there's really no guarantee that Ford will be a stud at guard. I'm probably reading too much into combine results, but the guy only did 18 reps at 225. I'm just not sure about Cody Ford, period.

Most of the things I'm typing are negative, but I really don't have a negative view of the offensive line. I think it's "fine." I just wish it was better. Could say the same thing about each aspect of the offense, which is why they weren't good last season.

I'm thinking an RG would be awesome, but we'll probably just stick with JF and keep Ford at RT. IF Ford can truly push people around at guard, it seems like a no brainer to kick him inside and play Ty at RT or sign someone.

Gotta get weapons and gotta have better overall play from the QB. We definitely faced an inordinate amount of 8, even NINE, man fronts.

Mitch Morse is what it is...we needed a center and he was available.

The line may have took over and closed out a few games, such as Tennessee, but they got pushed back more often.  Then there is the pass pro which left a lot to be desired.

These guys aren't bad football players; Morse is a technician and not a mauler, which leaves Spain and Feliciano to pick up the slack inside.  Those two *should* be able to push the DTs around since both are big guys.  Not sure why they have problems too often.

At this point, upgrading the RG spot is the only viable option remaining. Really hoping they do something there and don't focus solely on pass pro.

As far as being pushed around, I suspect Morse has something to do with this, especially in the 'A' gap.  He seemed to be kind of tentative in firing off the line; I don't know if it is because Morse is a little on the smaller side or concussion concerns.  Spain and Feliciano are bigger guys and I thought were more on the mauler side...though I could be wrong on this.

Morse is solid and he's gonna be here, so I don't think a whole lot about the C position. (Although I agree with your assessment.) It is what it is for now. You would really think Spain would be a good straight line blocker because of his size, but he's not. Feliciano is more grit than talent. These are all good football players and I'm not trying to rain on anyone's parade. Just offering an opinion about what I'd like to see from an OL.

At this point, I'm hoping they go after an RG with the skillset I prefer. We'll see how the roster looks when all the dust settles.

Re-signing Spain prevents a big need in FA or the draft.  Feliciano and Nysekhe are FA's next year and Long could be as well.  Dawkins will be extended soon imo.  I can't remember what presser it was but got the distinct impression Beane is looking to upgrade the Oline.  I'm thinking OT on Day 2 of draft.

What about the interior? We're obsessed with the tackles and pass pro, but nobody seems to care that they got pushed around on 3rd and short ALL SEASON.

I would say that a more efficient passing game, ie improvement from Allen, would probably back the opposing D off the LOS, but I don't love the combination. It's not bad. It's just missing a mauler.

Dawkins is fine. RT is a question mark with Ford, so HOPEFULLY he'll improve. Ty is a solid swing tackle and outperformed Ford last season. I think RT is a legit concern, but so is the interior.

And yes, Spain filled a need. But MY PREFERENCE would have been to fill that need in free agency and acquire a better straight line blocker at LG considering the other parts.

In the grand scheme of things, I suppose the offense is going to ride or die with the improvements they make at the skill positions and JA's development. But as someone who is not quite sure that will all pan out as planned, it would be cool if they could run the football.

That's not a blue print that's a perfect storm of high first round picks across the DLine. Where the niners win on scheme is offense.

I get wanting it, but you have to be an abysmal team for several years to construct a team like that. Let's see if they can sustain over time before we give the niners too much credit.

We're talking about defensive preference. I think McDermott is an excellent defensive coach, but I'd prefer to see him take a more aggressive approach in terms of getting to the QB and creating turnovers. They weren't particularly good in either area last season, although the defense as a whole WAS very good.

Probably has quite a bit to do with personnel also, which is why adding a stud edge is so important. You don't see Baker Mayfield march down the field with a clean pocket for a game winning TD or Desean Watson erasing a 16 point 3rd QTR deficit if you're applying adequate pressure on the QB.

Nobody in the world would say the defense isn't very, very good, but that element would make them elite.

And you're quibbling WRT SF. You mentioned the Rams only because they're a team with pass rushers who weren't particularly good last season. It was a convenient scapegoat considering SF had the most dominant defense in the league almost exclusively because of the pass rush.

Get after the QB. Get a stud who can get after the QB. It's pretty simple.

  11. 1 minute ago, ScottLaw said:

Was hoping the same.... there is just something missing upfront.

I doubt they’d trade for a guy like Jackson to put Feliciano on the bench.... I’m guessing they keep all 5 intact even thought an upgrade at RT is needed...

That's what I'm thinking. Spain is a nice player, but I don't like the fit considering the other parts.

I don't believe Ford is going to hold up at RT and @Hapless Bills Fan has stated that LG would be his natural position.

I would have greatly preferred to see them sign an RT and make the switch, but it appears we're going to see the same line.

You mean the same one where DS averaged over 5 yards a carry

The same one where we went 10-6?

The offensive line really was not our problem last year like it was the year before.....it was lack of offensive weapons (IMO)

DS wasn't getting those yards running through holes created by the line.

Gore was a shell of himself, but do you remember watching them try to run the ball on 3rd and short? It was brutal.

I just want to see at least one piece altered because this aspect of the game wasn't good enough.

feliciano is not a mauler ?

He's a gritty guy and I love his energy. But no. His run blocking abilities don't match the image.

I'm just trying to figure out how and where they plan to improve the PUSH generated by the OL.

People are rightfully interested in pass pro tackles. It's a big deal. But what appears to be a relatively silent issue with this unit is they don't collectively generate much push. Morse is here for 2020. Now Spain is here for 2020. These are two solid football players who aren't particularly adept at straight line blocking.

I was really hoping they'd add a different type of player at LG considering the other pieces. But that's just me.

Which is why I'd love to trade for Gabe Jackson for RG. At least one of the guards would be great player at getting serious push in the run game.

  14. Ok. Spain is a nice player, but this line needs a straight line blocker or TWO. LG would be the perfect spot to upgrade with Morse playing center.

There's a reason the run game was trash and the main culprit is the fact that the OL is largely comprised of big body guys solid in pass pro, but porous in generating push.

Feliciano is a nice player, but mauler? Not really.

I'd like this signing a whole lot more if the other two interior OL spots were manned by guys strong at the point of attack.

As is, I just don't see an OL conducive for a solid running game.

I suppose it's ok to want more, but I think what McDermott and  Frazier have achieved is far more impressive.

For me what you're describing is the LA Rams. Dante Fowler, Clay Matthews, and of course the very special Aaron Donald. Cory Littleton, Jalen Ramsey. Great players coached by Wade Phillips. They ranked 17th.

Would you swap personnel with LA? Would you swap statistics with that team in order to live out your more attacking scheme? I'm certain LA would swap the outcomes.

San Francisco is the blueprint, not the Rams.

I ditched many people in my life just because they wanted to talk about a Friends episode

Good decision. I had an ex who liked the show and it was immediately shut off when I entered the room. Can't imagine why that relationship failed.

It's just always driven me crazy when people use Seinfeld and Friends almost interchangeably. Seinfeld was wit. Friends was....shhoot.

Seinfeld and Curb are the two best comedies of all time.   Thanks to Larry.

@Mike in Horseheads come get your boy ?

Right. Curb is at the point where it's trending down, but the body of work this man has accumulated may never be duplicated.

Friends and Seinfeld couldn't be more diametrically opposed in terms of humor.

I don't think the problems on offense stem from philosophy.  I think the offensive problems result from a lack of offensive playmakers which limits the options the coaching staff has to respond to injuries or defensive adjustments.  The Bills essentially had one QB with two reliable WRs and one reliable RB.  The rest of the skill players simply failed to consistently make plays, so if Brown or Beasley or Singletary were taken out of the game by the defense or by injury, the Bills had no reliable alternatives.  What made the Chiefs and Niners so successful in 2019 was that when opponents shut off one thing their offenses did well, they had very real, very dangerous alternatives.

I would also add that even the Bills reliable skill position players are not good enough. There isn't a star. There isn't a game changer.

They've done a poor job THUS far acquiring playmakers. So two things must happen. They've got to hit on their draft picks or free agents, and Allen must improve.

This is by no means an offense ready to compete for a championship as is currently constructed. Very big offseason for BB.

  19. There just has to be more to this story. How are they projecting half the country ends up with this thing? It is only SLIGHTLY more contagious than the common flu.

Does HALF the population get the flu and how are they convinced this will not die out in the summer?

There just seems to be a lot of noise(from ALL sides of the political equation, so not really a political comment) and dearth of actual INFORMATION.
