So in this scenario, that he performs very well, you want him, but he blows you off for other offers, you would rather have a comp pick? You would rather have a comp pick than an expereinecd high performing DE?  Not saying Shaq will become that, just that if he does, he will be playing elsewhere.  Poor use of assets in my opinion.

Please repeat after me: I, FLFan, take thee Ethan in Portland, to be my wedded wife.

My son and I will be attending the first two days of the draft this year in Nashville.  As a representative of this proud message board brotherhood, and of Buffalo Bills fans everywhere, I solemnly vow to conduct myself in a manner keeping with the highest standards of our fine football franchise and fair city.

    Forthwith,  I promise;

1.)  To cheer loudly and wildly for whomever the Bills select, even if it is someone I have never heard of, even if it's a kicker in the 1st round.  In the event that a TV camera is recording my reaction to replay to the nation, I will not give Patriot fans the joy of seeing a Bill's fan upset with the selection.  I will act like this single draft pick has just guaranteed the next ten Lombardi Trophies come straight home to Buffalo, NY.

2.)  To boo and jeer at whoever the Patriots select.  Even if they draft the Virgin Mary or Jesus himself, I will react as if it is the worst pick in the history of not only the NFL, but of all organized sports since the very dawn of time.

3.)  I will vociferously denounce any draft pick by the New York Jets.  I will then projectile vomit on the closest Jet's fan.

4.) I will take pity on those poor miserable souls who are Dolphin's fans.  Being a Dolphin's fan is clearly punishment enough.  I will be the bigger man and simply ignore their pick altogether.

5.) The weather tomorrow night is going to be horrible in downtown Nashville.  I vow to stand stoically in the face of thunder, lightning, hurricane force winds, tornadoes, hail, pestilence, famine, plague, the whole d*mn Old Testament if need be, with nary a complaint or any indication of personal discomfort.  I will not forget that I am representing a Blue Collar town of rough and ready individuals and not a bunch of organic sushi eating, club seat occupying, douche canoes in New Jersey or L.A.

6.)  I will provide a thorough accounting of my 2019 NFL Draft exploits to this board when I return home, including the important stuff, like any Kay Adams sightings and where the good pizza and draft beer is in Nashville.  I will also include any witty rejoinders and put downs I lob at Patriot's fans during the course of the long weekend.

I swear this sacred oath on the square right foot of Tom Dempsey and on the indomitable fighting spirit of James Edward Kelly.  So help me God.

Do you promise to kiss TJ Hockenson on the lips if Beane takes him at 9?

Yup.  We have a bunch of 2,3,4 receivers.  We need a number 1 at both receiver and TE.  I could get behind Hock and/ or Butler/ Harry in the 2nd round.  We aren’t good enough in the passing game yet.

We're not good enough at stopping the run and rushing the passer either.

Twas the night before the Draft,
    and all through the States
football fans were pondering their favorite teams' fates.
The prospects were pondered and each given grades,
while fans wrote new mock drafts with really dumb trades.

    The pizzas were ordered,
    the beer was on ice,
the effort put into making man caves look nice.

When on the TV there came such a loud din,
It was goofy-haired Kiper, yapping again.
Just as the channel was about to be turned,
here came McShay, to share what he'd learned.

    The flowers now blooming,
    the skies a dull gray,
Gave color to a late April Christmas-like day.
As fans sat and hoped and said football prayers,
and pondered their favorite draftable players.

"Now Quinnen, now Murray, now Cheevers, now White,
now a corner named Greedy who covers them tight.
On Jacobs, on Bush, on Simmons and Fant,
On combine freak Metcalf, can he run a slant?!"

As we all nestled down and tried hard to sleep,
We were suddenly disturbed by a rather loud "peep".
I peaked out on my roof and was shocked by the scene,
A man dressed in red, Bills GM Brandon Beane!

With curiosity getting the better of me,
I asked Beane a question with curious glee:
"Who will we take? Will we draft in the current order?"
"Sorry", he said, "We'll be taking a corner!"

    My dreams freshly crushed,
I slinked back off to bed,
With visions of playoff droughts fresh in my head.
But I prayed and I hoped and I tried not to worry,
For Josh Allen's here now, we'll be good in a hurry!
The draft will soon start, the future is bright,
Happy Draft Eve to all, and to all a good night!

Outside of the quarterback position, tight ends have the steepest learning curve when transitioning to the NFL. The reason it can take years for a player to acclimate to an offense and develop into a starter is that the position demands a player to be a dependable piece in both the running and passing game. That means understanding the blocking scheme and how to read defenses from a blocking and passing game perspective. It's also a time for these 21-22-year olds, who are competing against the most athletic and skilled players they've ever faced, to continue to fill out their frame and learn technique because there is zero room for error in the trenches. Then there is always the time it takes to polish your route running, possibly expanding your route tree and gaining rapport with your quarterback. Until a player can develop an all-around game they'll be pigeonholed into a limited role.

Drafting and developing a tight end is the ultimate patience play and it can understandably be uncomfortable and difficult to hold strong when you see other first-rounders become instant impact players. The Lions are a perfect example of this. They drafted Eric Ebron 10th overall in 2014 and low and behold the next seven picks would make a Pro Bowl while still on their rookie deal.  Those players selected would include the likes of Aaron Donald and Odell Beckham. Last offseason, Detroit decided to move on from Ebron as they determined that he wasn't worth the price tag of his 5th-year option ($8.25M).

Both the franchise and the player are in a tough spot. Eric Ebron arguably wasn't worth paying $8.25M but he also was progressing like the majority of successful tight ends do. And that's exactly the point! It is really worth investing your most important draft asset into a player who may take years to develop and you may not see the benefit until four years down the road or until their second contract? Is there a better use of your resources?

Greg Olsen has a similar story to Ebron. He was taken 31st overall in the 2007 draft by the Chicago Bears. He put up respectable production his first four years and heading into his 5th season he was shipped off to Carolina where he continued to grow and later became a Pro Bowler and All-Pro on his 2nd and 3rd contracts.

I don't care.  Hockenson will be the next Gronkowski.  Take him at 9!

Well hopefully its DK himself convincing you as I am just putting out the accurate info on him.  Now that you are coming around...take into consideration this guy is a very high character guy.  A big time WR prospect without the Diva personality who works hard and cares a lot about the game.  Now with all that fresh in your mind, go watch this:

Then go read and watch this and ask yourself how Gilmore is gonna like covering and tackling this dude when Josh is firing bullets down field to this beast!!!!

    GO BILLS!!!!!!!

He'll be throwing 40 to 50 bullets to this beast, when the front four struggle to stop the run and rush the passer, and they're always having to play from behind.

Not at all. Just pointing out that just because we had a bad experience with drafting a WR in the top 10, doesn't automatically make it a death knell for that pick. There's been plenty of successful (and plenty of unsuccessful) WRs picked in the top 10.

@Cornette's Commentary, you do realize there are more ways to replace one defensive lineman than just our first round pick, right? I've seen you make this statement multiple times and it's beyond hyperbolic (and silly).

So, what's your solution?  Use a 2nd on Jerry Tillery, who did nothing of significance for Notre Dame last season?  Use a 2nd on Jeffrey Simmons, who tore his ACL preparing for the Combine and will likely miss the entire season?  Take Khalen Saunders,  a DT who has NEVER consistently gone up against legitimate competition, in the 3rd?
