The Pats - Bills content starts around 42:00.

    Some excerpts:

Burmeister: What's going on with Cam Newton?

Simms: Well, he's off. No doubt about that.

Simms argues that the Pats last week were a terrible matchup against the Niners, as the Niners are "a run-first-centric team" and Shanahan's the run genius of football. And the Patriots on defense are built to stop passing offenses. He argues Belichick tries to scare you out of runs by packing the box, but then backs away, and some of the eight guys in the box are littler guys than are usually up there and wouldn't be especially effective against the run.

Simms: "What you've got to do is go, ' Oh, OK, we're outnumbered in the box, so what, that guy's 195 pounds, that guy's 205 pounds, our right guard can block both of them with his right arm.' " And Shanahan stuck with the run.

Asked what he thought were the Pats biggest offensive problems he said offensive line injuries and post-COVID Cam hasn't been the same after missing three weeks of football. They both thought his motion is off right now. But what made me a bit worried is something Simms said about that.

Simms:  "[Newton] gets into this almost once a year his whole career. ... where his front shoulder gets way high in the air."

Goes on to say (quite a bit later) that Newton has had this problem many times before for a week or two or three and then either he or a coach figures it out and corrects it and he starts playing better again.

    ... and ...

Simms: "And now they've got Buffalo this week, and that's the perfect team for them. Again, matchups. ... The Bills can't stop the run and they can't run the ball, so they have to throw it every play. Perfect for New England. So don't be shocked if New England upset Buffalo this week."

And later, his preview of the game:

He and Florio both pick the Pats, saying the Bills strength is passing and the Pats strength is stopping the pass, and that on offense the Pats strength is running while the Bills weakness is stopping the run.

    Makes some sense.

If they're right, we'd better do a good job in the run game on both sides of the ball. Hopefully Feliciano's return will make a real difference.

    Whattya think?

I think they're spot on.  But Simms said something that I think is important to hear.  He said that as long as the game stays close, if favors NE.  We need to get out early and often and get up a couple of scores.  Then it favors us.

I think Josh will see this as a statement game for himself.  He knows he needs to beat them to remove the next layer of doubters.  Hopefully this will not result in pressing.  Take what NE give you and don;t force it.  Mix in a few timely runs and it is a high probability win for Buffalo.

10 guys around Josh that can't make the mistakes they've been making.  No TOs by the others.  No drops.  no whiffs on blocking assignments.  No movement on the line.  Etc.  There was a good article in the Athletic I read this morning detailing all of the individual errors our offense has had.  Way too many indivdiual mistakes.  I hope the O has addressed these.  Kinda embarrassing really, when you see it in print.

    WEEK ONE: B+

    WEEK TWO: A+

    WEEK THREE: B+

    WEEK FOUR: A-

    WEEK FIVE: B-

    WEEK SIX: D

    WEEK SEVEN: D+

    30/43 - 70% completion - 307 yards - 0 TD - 0 INT - 61 yards rushing - 1 fumble

I will address the elephant in the room first - yes, he has a D+ despite throwing for 300 yards. First and foremost that 300 yard thing was mainly a "Bills" stat that we were all obsessed with and frankly in his 3rd year we have to move on from that glorified marker. Josh Allen gets a D+ today because he made way too many mistakes in the red zone and our offense relied on a rookie kicker to SCORE ALL OF OUR POINTS.

The good: there were drives where Josh took what the defense gave us and drove us all the way down the field. He also had 3 potential TD passes that didn't end up happening: the first to Gabe Davis which got called back because he wasn't lined up correctly. The second one to Beasley, but he didn't establish position to get back in before the catch, and lastly, the one that hurt me the most, the beauty to Kroft which would have been such a cool moment for someone who just welcomed a new child into this world.

The bad: I'm sure I was not alone in receiving text messages from friends that Josh had that "panic" look in his eyes again. It reminds me of when someone studies for a test, shows up in the classroom confident and ready, and then opens the page and realizes that the teacher switched the test questions. He simply refuses at times to take what the defense gives him and always tries for the hero ball play. Wide open receivers underneath only to be forcing it into windows that don't exist. He needs to be better.

The ugly: Red zone decisions. The fumble was just terrible and sadly, was somewhat expected after he got away with that first fumble but luckily his knee was down. The 3rd and short where he decided to selfishly keep the ball rather than give it to Moss was way too obvious and has become an instant read for defenders.

Glass half full: it's a road division win and they usually never come easy. Vegas set us up for disaster with such a huge point spread, and coming off 2 losses to face a 0-6 team had trap game written all over it but we did what was needed to get the W. The offense got Bass in FG position and he delivered. The defense made key stops and had essential turnovers to bring Darnold back down to reality.

We are 5-2 getting ready to face the Pats. We are in good shape and I have confidence this team will continue to rally through these injury bugs (missing John Brown is huge for Josh) and win this division.

    GO BILLS!

I didn't see much panic.  He was forced (not chosen by him) to scramble a lot today and did pretty good scrambling too.  My opinion anyways

Let's not get too cocky. Don't forget how vulnerable we are over the middle to the quick strike.

Quick strike over the middle?  We can't contain either edge, we can't stop the run.......  Guys in this thread that think our D is going to come out and make some kind of statement are fooling themselves.

Our one dimensional offense is going to have to have a near perfect game to beat the Jets.

All I was stating is that even as bad as we were playing the defense still had missed opportunities to change this game in our favor. I believe the same with the offense. Some things don’t show up on the stat sheet like the PI calls. Those were positive plays. its never as bad as immediately after the game. I always like to watch the game a second time through after I cool off.

I do think we should have gone for 2 points after the Beasley TD because KC scoring again was inevitable. Meh onto Jets for a convincing win.

Heads weren't where they needed to be.  Just thinking about the last half of the 4th quarter.  We have our #1 WR walking back to the LOS as the clock is running, we have two 15yd roughing penalties on our defense, we have our QB run up the middle for less than 10yrds with no time outs to stop the clock.

Hearts and heads weren't there.  And you know we know better.  It's things like this I can't get my head wrapped around.

Bill's need to use run game more and has to get better. Teams going to start keying on passing game lots more. Plus put Spain back in. Get Winters outta there.

Do the Bills have the personnel to improve the run game?  While we pass block OK, we are terrible run blocking.  Is that scheme (coaching) or talent on the field?

We gave up 26 points to the Chiefs.  The only team to give up fewer this year has been the Chargers (who gave up 23 and lost) - the Patriots also allowed 26 (and lost by more than we did.)

Going into this game I thought our recipe for winning against the Chiefs would be holding them to under 30 and scoring more than that.  Were you all really anticipating holding them to much less?

You can't compare the typical KC offense to last night's game.  They brought an entirely different game plan.  I don't know if it was due to the whether, due to tape on the Bills, etc.  They didn't bring their "high powered" offense.  Mahomes was a game manager last night and they ran the ball up our "personalities" using much more clock on their drives than they typically due.  While we did drop our defenders some, to keep their receivers in front of us, we couldn't stop their run so they just simply kept bringing it.

Um, no, @Over 29 years of fanhood.   No, the Bills did not play the same defense against the Titans and the Chiefs.

The Titans can by damn run the ball.  263 rush yards against the Texans.  What we did against the Titans is we said "we're going to limit your run game, beat us passing if you can".  The Titans said "OK"

What we did against the Chiefs is said "we're going to play first to take away your deep passing game, your quick strike passing.  Beat us running and with underneath stuff if you can."  The Chiefs said "OK, and while we're at it, we'll just grind out yards, convert 3rd downs, and keep the ball away from your offense"

    This is exactly what happened

So lets say the fumble was a fumble and we get it.  Drive down and win the game.  Again, thinking hypothetically and I know it didn't happen.

Would you still feel happy about the win or would you still have deep concerns about our defense getting gashed all night?  Plus, with the inconsistencies on offense two weeks in a row.

Would the win feel flukish to you?

Any of our future opponents that don't run it up our throats, with an RPO sprinkled in here and there to their tight end hasn't been paying attention.

I might add that Norman dropped an easy INT in the 3rd quarter too.  Everything is hindsight.  I had no issues with the game plan on defense.  Only that our offense couldn't deliver.  Frustrating that it always seems to be one side of the ball functioning while the other struggles.  Hopefully. a Jets win cures that...for a little while at least.

You think the D functioned last night?
