Wrong. After his exemption year, Efe Obada has made the Panthers 53 for consecutive years. Perhaps the article refers to the Patriots specifically?

My biggest problem with Zay (and I cant shake it as hard as I try) I feel like we were sold one thing and got something else

I thought I was getting a big strong possession receiver that caught everything within his catch radius and had flypaper hands......

What we got was not that.....

Yes he has gotten better every year

    Yes he can block

But jesus it looks like he bobbles every pass thrown to him IF he catches it......he doesnt dig out poorly thrown balls....he drops passes that hit him right in the hands....

Were it not for his draft position I think Zay would be gone by now...and I think when we draft a 1st round WR next year he WILL be gone......

I just dont see Duke dropping balls.....he looks like he catches everything.....and he ALSO blocks

Perception is a funny thing though isn't it? The Panthers who drafted Curtis Samuel in the same draft as Zay maybe ten slots later. In his career Samuel has 750 yards and five touchdowns. Zay had 1000 and 9 TDs. All preseason Curtis was being hyped and on the Panthers forum people love him and truly believe Samuel will be fantastic. He's explosive but it's all projected.

Now I won't argue that Zay doesn't look convincing, If you want to compare him to Juju, Kupp or Godwin. Or that he's suffered from drops. Or that he has excelled.for the Bills. But he isn't a bust.

I had the Bills at 10 wins heading into TC in 2017...........they Jauron-balled their way to 9............it would have been inexcusable to have that veteran of a team with the talent they had and finished where knuckleheads like you thought they would.

This year they have the 6th oldest team in the NFL...........they have spent a ton of money in the short term to stock/assemble THEIR roster in year 3..........the QB looks ready and they realistically should win 11 games with this very favorable schedule.   THAT is realistic.

Wait...so they got 9 instead of 10 that you hoped in 2017. And this year they are already two wins towards your target of 11. So why are you so convinced that McD is doing a terrible job? You talked about Rex Ryan-I mean do you genuinely hand on heart feel that he was a better HC than McD? Or is this just because you wanted someone else like Mcvay? Do you feel the franchise is on the upturn or the downturn? I'm genuinely curious. I'm glad that you see cause for optimism in Josh but do you really think that from a personal viewpoint McD is beyond redemption for you at this point?

I'm always going to be about winning the Super Bowl.     That's the objective........not 9-7 and a WC.

    Consider the guy McD replaced.

Rex had some playoff runs with NYJ........even beat the Patriots in Foxboro to go to the AFCCG..........but it's about winning titles and sustaining success.

Then consider the guy REX replaced.

First year in Jax took the Jags to AFCCG and had the lead on the Patriots in the 4th quarter of that game.

Plenty of time-testedly bad HC's like Rex have made the playoffs a couple times or won some games in the playoffs.

Now look at you..........tryna give props to a HC for keeping the Pats score down for a few quarters in a game where the Bills never even got in the ***** red zone on offense!............they never challenged in that game.........don't be so pathetic.

Don't let realism get in the way of your impossible expectations. Bills were slated by most people including Bills fans to pick high for both of the past seasons. In the first they achieved a wild card ending the drought. Last year wasn't about anything other than starting over. Considering that and the horrific start, and despite a putrid OL, WRs, TE, and novice QBs they managed six wins with some flashes from their rookie QB.

Do you genuinely think that a team that had long-standing fundamental flaws was going to be competitive immediately? You talk about championship games and SB appearances like that is a reasonable expectation in year one. Goodness me.

Owning mistakes is not something that Gase is inclined to do..............contrary to some belief around here McBeane have made egregious errors.........but they've admitted them and even apologized to the locker room in the case of Peterman and that gives players at least a sense that things CAN get better and makes them less inclined to quit when faced with adversity,  IMO.    That's a time buyer for a regime.     That's where Gase is really in trouble, IMO.    Chan Gailey was kind of a passive aggressive blamer of players and that really hurt him here(all of his stops, IMO)..........Gase is willing to flat out point fingers.    That does nobody any good.

McD is at the point where it's important to have a game where they actually challenge the Patriots though.......where he isn't out game planned and out game day'd...........because there really is no excuse for the manner in which they've played in 4 games against a divisional opponent.    Even Bowles and Gase have had games where they either won or had the Pats on the ropes.

You still don't get it do you? It is possible for an HC (especially a novice like McD) to make mistakes but for his overall running of the franchise to be professional and something players and fans can buy into

Nobody is trying to whitewash things here or proclaim him Bill Belichick The OP simply stated that the way things are being done is like chalk and cheese when compared to some previous regimes and to some of the messes elsewhere

You aren't seeing Buffalo players arguing with coaches, demanding new contracts, making controversial Twitter statements.

None of this has anything to do with whether they win or lose against the Patriots  In football and in life you sometimes have to take your lumps and learn. Too bad you can't move on like the team has

Just at a quick glance, the only real options I see for Eli (besides remaining as Jones' backup, which I think is most likely) are:

    1. Pittsburgh - Maybe as Rudolph's backup, maybe as the starter, but I think Pittsburgh is at least a little excited to see Rudolph in game action even if I personally think he's bad.
    2. Chicago - They already have Chase Daniel as Trubisky's backup though, and might not want to put any additional pressure on Trubisky as is.
    3. Green Bay - Their current backup is Tim Boyle.
    4. Jets - They probably think Darnold is only out a few more weeks though, so maybe they hold off, but Eli would certainly be an upgrade over Falk in the interim if they want to keep any hopes of a successful season alive.

    That's all I got.

    How about Jacksonville? Coughlin.

A great WR..........one of the league's best young pass rushing DE's..........an explosive young TE with speed and quickness and 2 years of team control.......a few of the games best CB's...........they aren't all needs at the moment(injuries happen).........but if not top players at key,  high impact, high dollar positions then what kind of midseason player are you looking for to take the team over the top?

Green is great but old and often injured. He will retire a Bengal by his own comments. Ngakoue is superb and there is no way Jax will choose other guys over him  Engram is a receiving TE who is bad at blocking  Buff don't need CBs especially with terrible attitudes like Ramsey. Petersen would be very expensive and he's past his best.

This stuff isn't gonna happen until trade deadline when teams begin to accept the season is over or that they have an obvious upgrade available. It's pure conjecture. This guy is just throwing names against the wall and seeing what sticks.

Our defense + the Jets not converting on turnovers + Mosley getting injured was what won us the game.

Edit: Forgot the part where the Jets' kicker completely screwed them over... If he could hit a FG, we still lose.

It's so funny to me that so many Bills fans are always so desperate to diagnose the cause of wins based on things that could have gone differently or errors and Injuries to opponents. if you did this in everyday life you would go crazy  This exact same thing happened when Buffalo last made the playoffs. You are so desperate to talk about alternate universes that you can't even credit your QB for coming back from 13 points behind in the last quarter

Darnold was the better QB in that game.

If Allen played like Darnold did, we would've been in cruise control by the end of the game. Simply not turning the ball over would've done wonders.

Our defense + the Jets not converting on turnovers + Mosley getting injured was what won us the game. Allen finally playing like a decent starter at the end of the game, doesn't mean he had anywhere close to a good performance.

You're absolutely entitled to that opinion. Darnold played safe the whole game hence his throw yardage average. He never really hurt the Bills but for box score afficionados his statline looks acceptable  I believe the Bills tried that approach with Tyrod. I for one am glad the coaches are saying to JA try your arm. He led a 4th quarter comeback. He had a positive impact-but you see what you want to see.

Another parallel is Eli. I went to the Giants forum ahead of the upcoming game. His statline is excellent but reading fan comments, his insipid short passing game is hated by their fans. They are already begging for Jones who was a deeply unpopular draft selection.

Does anyone else get the ratings for the Bills players for free? I'm not sure why, I am not a paid member but if I click on roster, the player and then 2019 I am able to see what their grades are after the first game. I can't see any specifics, but the overall grade comes up. Note names are not in order and I've lumped offense and defense separately. Some interesting tidbits. Since I don't pay for PFF I don't know the breakdown of players grade. PFF claimed Allen did well last year only because of his running grade, I wonder if he did better as a passer yesterday. Two, before you all get the pitchworks, remember PFF is just a metric and they are wrong a lot. Remember, when they championed Tyrod for three years before he had a performance with the Browns that would have made EJ blush? If Josh and the offense settles down, they'll prove them wrong sooner than later. Keep in mind, we did win, but we're going to need more than 17 points to beat most teams.

Really should have given us an A.  Easy to forget that offensively we only have TWO starters from last year (Dawkins and Allen, if you don't count Zay).  The defense is or can be elite, and the offense will only get better.  A gutsy, tough road win against a quality division opponent.  Give 'em the A!

     Why aren't you counting Zay?

I think you'll find that it is very rare for GMs to take a personable approach with players. That is the Head Coach's job.

The Head Coach leads the team and has to be in with the players.

The GM thinks about what's best for the franchise, cuts guys, and negotiates contracts. They deal with Agents more than Players. It's better to stay at arm's length and all about business.

    Good cop/Bad cop. Mom/Dad.

Right. It's amazing to me that people just assume that the HC and GM are acting independently of each other here. Since Gruden wanted Mayock isn't it likely that the handling of AB was something they agreed upon?

By his own admission he is nowhere ready to play in the NFL right now as his understanding of the game, schemes and assignments is severely lacking given his limited exposure.

This is absolutely true as a running back. I think he could be an instant hit as a returner though. He needs to work on reading the blocks and using them properly. I do wonder if he could have made the roster if Andre Roberts had not been previously signed.

As a manager of 50+ personalities, sometimes it not what you said, it's how you say it. I think in AB's case, same things could have been said in a private setting and yes, I think he would have reacted differently. Him being a "diva" (not what I would call it), one on one is always the best way to handle that type of personality.

I agree that it may have. 'May' being the operative word. Respectfully I think you could build an alternative view that it may have worked out exactly the same. AB has a very visible public and online personality that he wants to project to the public as seen in Hard Knocks. I think his reaction would have been largely the same. The man has no filter when it comes to Twitter.

In a way though this is a best case scenario for getting rid of Brown. I would be willing to bet that Gruden and Mayock talked about the response-its funny that people assume that Mayock's was a knee-jerk reaction. Now, because Mayock made a very clear stand the Raiders can use his responses as leverage to escape from a contract. If this is by design it was actually very clever.

  15. 18 minutes ago, Alphadawg7 said:

Again, you missed my point.  Did not say to shrug shoulders or not hold him accountable.  I talked about how Mayock has handled the relationship and handled holding him accountable.

No didn't miss your point. I neither quoted you nor attributed it to you. Sorry if that was insinuated.

I broke it down as two options. A ignore it (shrug shoulders). B Deal with it behind closed doors. So if he does all the same actions behind closed doors AB won't be upset? Can you be sure of that? Can the Raiders still cut AB?

This is conjecture, but I would guess that he still makes a fuss but he sells it as the Raiders trying to discipline him behind closed doors. The reality is that any conjecture about other solutions is just that. AB is a reactionary ego who thinks hes in the right and is unafraid to stand up for himself. No matter how you handle him he could perceive it a slight.

  16. 27 minutes ago, Alphadawg7 said:

I didn’t say not to hold him responsible, I said how he handled the relationship with AB.  You guys can’t seem to separate the difference in holding someone accountable and how you go about holding someone accountable.

I have literally explained my reasoning at least 10 times now and everyone keeps replying with the same comments that aren’t even what I am saying.

Mayock took a hard line stance with a diva player.  Never going to work with a guy like Brown.  AB doesn’t respond well if he doesn’t feel like he can trust someone like Mayock or if he feels disrespected.  As a GM, you have to understand that and taking those comments in August to the media was a big mistake by Mayock.  He shound have kept it private and talked to AB man to man only.  He could have sat AB down man to man and discussed their stance in the fines instead of sending him a letter too.

It’s  just my opinion, but I called this when Mayock made those comments in august that he was going to lose the trust of AB and something small was gonna set up a blowout.

And I honestly don’t care at all about the Raiders, AB, etc.  But also just trying to respect posters here and respond but now it’s too much to keep up with.  My simple opinion is that Mayock handled AB poorly and while AB is obviously to blame, Mayock also hasn’t helped the situation and contributed to turbulent relationship with AB.

And, why is it only Mayock has a bad relationship with AB?  I mean no one else on the Raiders has this bad relationship with him.  All his coaches and trainers seem to love him and players have all seem to have taken to him too.

I appreciate what you are saying-that Mayock could have handled it differently. But if you want to run with that as an idea you have to project the consequence of going down that road. Imagine if every thing that AB had done was met with a shrug of the shoulders. What message does that send? Over time if left unchecked everyone in that organisation will be rightly asking why there are no limitations on this individual.

So right now he would be set to play on Monday. Instead, they drew a line in the sand and dared him to cross it which he did. We have no idea how Gruden feels about this-on Hard Knocks he was right there with AB wanting him on the pitch. But did he have a choice with that guaranteed money? Now you have a situation where because Mayock made a stand the Raiders may be able to cut him without a cap penalty. Granted you lose an elite WR. But perhaps after everything that has happened this may now be an acceptable outcome for Gruden.

If your starting point is do whatever it takes to get AB on the field then yes it could have been handled differently. If however, Mayock was not acting alone and was in fact making these moves after consultation with JG then maybe they've played their cards very wisely....

I get that as well with unbalanced Rosters. Maybe the interim solution right now is to expand it to 8 players. One division in AFC Selected and One in NFC selected. There was at least 8 in this years program and only 4 are really able to benefit off it this year.

I just think it needs to be expanded and while the unbalanced roster is a concern (on the 53 anyway) but just add the PS and Camp Exemptions for more than just the 4 teams no complaining of the unbalanced PS since this program started. I just think they need to expand it because it really isn’t a growth program while there are players that are not involved because this year there was only 4 teams allowed to use the program.

I would like to see it expand also. Some of the stories on undiscovered are great-i've been watching it for a couple of years now. I just don't see them giving roster exemptions to only some teams.

I would also expect players unions to be unhappy because a roster spot would be taken from an American prospect and given to an outside athlete who has no real background in the game.

Furthermore, I expect the IPP to be wary of diluting the quality of the guys they are sending for consideration by sending more who are less able  That could go both ways

Yeah they give all 7 guys an equal look, But its still an interesting watch when it comes to how the IPP works. In the second episode Wade's wit and musical ability are on show:

I don't like the fact that Wade can't play for an entire year.

It is frustrating especially because these guys are older than the rookies but a year with the PS can make a big difference. Obada was on the PS for a year and now he has made the 53 for 2 seasons in a row. His football knowledge is much improved.

I can't imagine many scenarios in which a franchise would risk promoting a IPP player straight to the 53. Both Obada and Wade made splashy preseason plays but weren't really in contention.

The Jets guy Valentine didn't do squat but they still put him on the PS. It just lets them assess.the guys for a year.

    5 minutes ago, MAJBobby said:

But that is my point with this post. They are not using a roster slot they have the exemptions.

    Even expand it like this

Camp - get a Roster exemption (for one international player) 91 players

PS - get a Roster exemption 11 players

Roster - get a Roster exemption 54 players (unless you already have a International Pathway Program Player on the PS then you lose either the 53 man exemption or the PS exemption

By putting an exemption on the 53 man roster like that maybe these players wouldn’t have to sit a year on the PS

I don't disagree with you. It would have to be a level playing field though. You would need to find a guy every year for all 32 teams. Otherwise it unbalances the rosters across the league. I'm sure the NFL are trying to avoid that. I'm not sure that there are 32 guys per year who could breakthrough but maybe?
