  1. Scoring is the most exciting part of the game.  Like it or not, football has to evolve to stay in step with a society that has no patience for anything anymore.  The NFL needs to be proactive and roll with the times. "Defensive battles" aren't exciting to most people.  9-6 at half-time?  Boring game...  Look at the Rams / Chiefs MNF game this year.  It's widely considered the game of the season.  Score... 54-51.

It's why soccer has been such a hard sell in this country, and why MLB is in trouble and juicing the balls for more home runs and trying whatever they can to speed up the game.

  2. If Allen has an O-line that lets him stand tall in the pocket and throw the ball from a stable base, not running for his life or on designed roll outs to mitigate the rush, I think Allen will take a big step forward next season.  More so than receivers to throw the ball to,  if the O-line can give Allen just one more second for him to read the defense and let a route develop and let him step into a throw and not be forced to throw off his back foot or on the run I think the "accuracy" issues go away.

Having a clean pocket to throw from every now and then doesn't seem like too much to ask for.  Beane needs to get it done.

Sure the stadium is old and spartan. It supports the economy of the region. But the players' facilities are first-class. Here, we worry about attracting free agents with comments like "who will come to Buffalo if we cut so-and-so", etc. Realistically, it is far more important to express to the rest of the country that we are committed to providing the best training and rehab facilities rather than whether or not they should like cold weather.

It reminds me of when they had just hired Rex and they were giving him a tour of the facilities and he was walking around looking around like a kid at Disney World and he said that everything looked fantastic. They showed him the cafeteria, and the weight room and he just raves about the facilities.  He actually says after being shown the locker room "I'm blown away here.  People have no idea..."

The link to the video on YouTube is below.   The facilities tour starts at the 1:30 second mark and the tour of the locker room starts right around 3:15 second mark.  Around the 4:18 second mark he says "I'm just blown away though, I don't know what I was expecting, but this is about as nice as it gets, you've got everything here."

The football stadium may be old, but everything else is state of the art.  People just don't know.  I don't know how you go about changing that misconception, but I agree, it is just one of the many issues that make Buffalo a hard sell for free agents and its completely unfounded.

  4. I think Allen hurting his elbow may have saved his season.  I think it was a huge benefit for him to have several weeks in the middle of the season to go back and spend time watching his game film and work on the mental aspect of his game.  I think it made a huge difference.  He couldn't work on his throwing when his elbow was healing, all he could work on was the cerebral part of being an NFL quarterback.

He didn't have to worry about installing new plays for that week's game and breaking down the opposing defense.  He could just focus on what he needed to do to become a better QB, not what he had to do to win that particular game.  That chance to take a deep breath and refocus your efforts can be huge.  Without that time off there's a good chance he'd have finished the season the same way he started it.  We all saw when he came back from the injury that his pocket presence was significantly improved and his play reflected that.  I'm not sure that late season improvement happens without the elbow injury.

Who would have guessed that Jadeveon Clowney could end up being the Bill's 2018 MVP?

  5. Unlike many, I have no problem with Allen running the ball.  He’s a big guy and I’d rather have him tackled 9 yards down the field by a 180lb safety than be crushed by a 300 lb lineman when the pocket collapses.

Instead of taking a sack and losing eight yards on the play, or throwing the ball away, and a precious down with it, I’ve got no problem with him getting at least two or three yards on a scramble, and lots of times those scrambles turn into big gains and drive defining plays.

As long as he slides or goes out of bounds and avoids the hits whenever possible, I’m all about Allen using his legs.  If he doesn’t, it negates one of his strengths and makes it easier for the opposing defense.

Look what Bortles did to us in the playoff game last year, his scrambling broke our back.  You never hear people complaining about Aaron Rodgers when he scrambles for yardage and keeps a drive alive.

It seems to me that most quarterbacks are injured getting nailed in the pocket trying to get a ball off when a 250 lb DE is teeing off on them.  If you’re running, you usually dictate the contact at the end of the play.  That seems safer to me.

    Keep running Josh!

You can't buy what isn't on the market.  And good OLmen don't come on the market very often for good reason.  OL is a place where continuity is important.

Let's say we want to find a really good C as a FA.  Per Spotrac, candidates would include Ryan Kalil (Car), Brett Jones  and Nick Easton (Minn), Matt Paradis (Den) and Mitch Morse (KC).

Ryan Kalil just retired.  Jones was the backup C for the Vikes and started the 1st 3 games when Elflein was out, but as soon as Elflein came back he took a seat.  Easton played guard on the Vikes good OL in 2017 and was IR'd all 2018 with a bulging disc in his neck.  So we're looking at two guys who got outplayed at the position on a totally Meh OL, one of whom is recovering from a very worrisome, often lingering, injury for a line player.  If Easton is healthy, I would expect the Vikes to re-sign him but as a LG, not a C.  Brett Jones would be a shot in the dark - he's been the backup C on two teams with crap OL (NYG and Vikes this year).

KC really likes Mitch Morse, but he took 6 weeks to recover from a concussion in Wk 6 this season, his 3rd concussion since 2015.  He's better than anyone else they have at center, so if they don't re-sign him - look very carefully under the hood, folks.  He might be one "bell ringing" away from the end of his career.

Matt Paradis, as I understand it, has become regarded as one of the top centers in the league.  Denver's OL was not "all that" this year, and Paradis ended the season on IR for a broken leg.  Again, look carefully under the hood if Denver does not re-sign him, but he seems like the most promising of the guys available.  But I would look for Denver to try to re-sign him, and they have reasonable cap space to do it.  If not, expect significant competition for his services.

So OK, you want to address the OL in FA?  Who ya gonna go after?

    Great observation Hapless.

That is the gist of my thread the other day that the Bills may want to restock the O line and WR positions in free agency this year, but it is going to be hard for them to accomplish it due to the limited options available on the market and the fact that there are a lot of teams out there with money to spend and more appealing situations for a free agent to go to.  If the Bills and the Dolphins put the same offer on the table for a player, do you think a 25 year old free agent is going to pick Buffalo?  You'd be crazy to think that South Beach, great weather, and no state income tax that adds 9% to the value of the contract won't be a big factor in the decision?

That's why I think Beane is going to look to trades to do what he can't do in free agency.  We don't have any players to trade, but we do have draft picks to offer up.  I'd be shocked if he didn't trade for at least two players before the end of April's draft.  I could see him trading during the draft for players.

Not one QB is going in that top 8.

The Jags can trade back and get a QB later.

That's one trade down I can see happening.

Hey Big Blitz, I'd bet you a hamburger you're wrong.  Every year a couple of QBs become the pick of the litter and teams start to jockey for them.  This year won't be any different.  At least two QBs will go ahead of us.

  8. 1. Cards

    2. 49's

    3. Jets

    4. Raiders

    5. TB

    6. Giants

    7. Jags

    8. Lions

    9. Bills

We are set at QB for now so we want as many teams as possible ahead of us in the draft to select a QB and let the non-QB players drop to us.  By my reasoning there are at least four teams set at QB ahead of us, Cards, 49's, Jets, and the Lions.

The Raiders are a wild card. Who knows what Chucky is going to do?  He had words of encouragement for Carr last week but he might jump at a QB prospect if the right one comes along and they certainly have enough draft capital to move up in the draft order if he wants to.

TB is a wild card too.  With a new coach and Winston entering the last year of his rookie contract, this is the year the Bucs need to make a long term commitment to Winston if they are going to.  I wouldn't be surprised to see them trade him away and go fishing for a replacement.  This would be the best circumstance for the Bills because it adds another QB needy team ahead of us.

I think the Giants and Jags both go hard after a QB this year.  Eli is about finished and the Jags QB job is open.

At a minimum we will likely have at least two QBs go ahead of us, and maybe one more team who trades up to get a QB ahead of us if a third solid QB comes out of the Combine.  That would put us in the position of selecting the 6th non-QB off the board which is not a bad position.

I wish there were more great QB prospects coming out of the college ranks this year to entice teams to trade up ahead of us and grab one.  There always seems to be one or two QB who wow at the Senior Bowl and the Combine who increase their draft stock significantly.  Lets hope a bunch of turning-pro college QBs blow the doors off everyone this off season, the Raiders ditch Carr, and the Bucs ditch Winston.  That would be the perfect scenario for us.

The more QBs selected ahead of us, the more value we have at our draft position.

  10. Mayfield does look good.  I don't feel any need to bash Mayfield because we drafted Allen.  It is not a zero sum game, they can both be successful.  It's not like we passed on Mayfield and took Allen instead.   I think Mayfield is further ahead of where Allen is right now, but I believe Allen has a higher ceiling.  Hopefully Allen reaches that ceiling in the next couple of years.

Being a life long Bills fan, I can empathize with the long suffering Browns fans.  I think both of our fan bases deserve a little time in the sun.  As long as the Browns aren't playing the Bills, I wish the Browns and Mayfield good luck.

Sure he's a good guy,  but he claps a lot.  Can't have a head coach who's a clapper.  I mean he did break the Drought last year.   And he does manage to get guys to play for him even when everyone knows the season is lost.  It is only his second year coaching and he is probably going to get better at his job as he gets more experience at it going forward.  And I guess you can argue that he managed to squeak out 6 wins this year with the lowest payroll roster in the League and a rookie QB.  Sure, he's a class act too, but, what about that clapping....

  12. As the salary cap has gone up and teams are better able to resign their impending free agents, less and less talent is available in the free agency market.  That is why we have seen such a sharp uptick in the number of trades in the NFL during the last few seasons, and why I think the amount of trades are going to continue to increase as teams realize it may be the best way to buff their rosters with the free agency market drying up.

It has always been hard for the Bills to get free agency talent without paying through the nose for them.  Buffalo is not a place most players want to play.  When we are competing against other teams who can field a similar monetary offer but they also have a big market, a dome, good weather, or low / no state income taxes,  that puts the Bills even further behind the eight ball.  Buffalo is a great place to play football, you just have to get them here for them to figure that out.  Just ask Shady.  He didn't want to play here and would have never played here if he hadn't been traded.  Now he sees what a great place it is to play.

    Beane does not have a lot of players left for trade bait with the Bill's roster stripped down to the studs this year.  That's why I think we will start to see Beane trading away draft picks as the draft approaches (his only trade commodity) for offensive line and receiving help.  You see quality players being traded for late round draft picks all the time.  Here are some traded players and their trade compensation from just this year;

    RB Ty Montgomery    7th rounder

    WR Golden Tate       3rd rounder

    WR Demaryius Thomas    4th & 7th rounders

    OT Corey Robinson   7th rounder

    OT Shon Coleman    7th rounder

    C Brett Jones     7th rounder

    WR Tavon Austin  6th rounder

Certainly not all of them are game changers, but they do represent a reasonable risk / reward ratio for the draft capital spent.  We have a lot of money for signing these players to long term contracts if they pan out, money that we might have trouble spending in the limited free agency market.  I bet Beane will target players with 1-2 years left on their rookie contracts who have shown some ability and start making calls to their GMs dangling our trade picks as bait. We have all of our draft picks plus an extra 4th, 5th, and 7th this year.

With all the coaching changes and rebuilds that are going to happen this off season, (at least six, Jets, Bucs, Jags, GB, Browns, Cards) there may be a lot of teams looking to reshape their roster and they might value draft picks over the last regime's players.  Just look at Oakland, Chucky has unloaded everyone for picks.

If Beane can unload late round picks for proven NFL quality starters, I think he will jump on it rather than rolling the dice in the draft.  If a trade gets done, look for Beane to lock them up on a longer term contract with all the cap space we have.  He has definitely shown he is not afraid to make a deal.  I am just not that optimistic the Bills will be able to get a lot done in free agency this year.  Going forward, I think trades will replace free agency as the main way to build a roster outside of the draft, and I expect Beane to be all over it this off season.

People are pissed because the product on the field was a joke and nothing about today pointed to an optimistic future.   If anything it showed there are going to be more holes next year on this team, on offense and defense, than previously anticipated.    Absolutely nothing to be optimistic about today except the bump up in draft position.

This team is a long way from being good.   And, this Bills front office has to get an awful lot right this offseason for this team to be a playoff team next year.

You may be right, time will tell.  I read a lot here and don't post often.  Seems that this board is full of unbridled optimism when we win, and ready to eat rat poison after a loss.  As always, I think the truth is in the middle.

We have said for a long time that the Bills will go nowhere without a franchise QB.  Allen didn't play well today but I think he has the best shot at being the franchise QB we've needed since Kelly retired.  We have the cheapest payroll in the league right now because of all the dead money we ate this year and it shows.  I think we missed Milano a lot today.  Our defense is not the dumpster fire that many are making it out to be.  There are pieces there to build with.  A solid secondary and some good young linebackers.

The offense....   well, that's a different story.  We need help all over the place and hopefully we will have the resources to do something about it, but it will likely take more than just one year to make this team a contender. We are rebuilding, we all knew this year was going to suck.

This is year one of the Beane Era.  Let me repeat that, YEAR ONE.  Give the man a chance.

You make some valid points.  Here are my counter points:

    1) the FA acquisitions and the money that was spent this year, was spent primarily on DL and LB - Star Lotuleilei and Trent Murphy for example.   Other players we had in place last year who contributed to taking us to the playoffs and who were signed to reasonable deals elsewhere, were moved on from.    When we get gashed in the run game as badly as we got gashed today, there is reason to be concerned we did not make good choices.

    2) the ST play is awful - AWFUL.  We routinely dress among the most players for ST.  The penalties, the mistakes, the poor punting - it does not look like a well-coached unit.  Beyond the punter, that isn’t an issue of talent, it’s an issue of discipline and proper coaching.

    3) Same goes for the persistent awful penalties.  We do not play like a well disciplined, well coached team.

    Great points all.

We need to shore up the run defense, it was clearly woeful today.  They need to get some meat in the middle of that line who can gum things up. Latulelei clearly didn't bring it today.  I'm not sure what the answer is, but we are not going to win if we can't stop the run. We definitely miss Milano in there

Special teams has been woeful.  Hauschka has been money for most of the year and I loved how Bolden attacked the ball and just busted up field as quickly as he could today, not dancing around.  Crossman has been great for years, I'm not sure what is going on this year.

One of the reasons we made the playoffs last year is that we went from being 22nd in the league in penalties to 10th in the league.  I think this year we have taken a big step backwards.  I don't know how much of that you can blame on the youth of the roster, but it is definitely an issue that needs to be addressed.

I still think a lot of the issue is our young, cheap roster and that should get better over the next two years.  Fingers crossed...

  15. Forgive me for copying and pasting this from another thread, but it seems appropriate here as well.

Allen and Edmunds were drafted because of their physical traits and potential.  If Edmunds figures it out, he will be a league leading freak for years with his size and speed.  Allen is in the same situation.  Not polished coming out of college, but will be a baller if he develops with his physical attributes.

Beane didn't draft Allen and Edmunds to win this year, he drafted them to win next year.  Hopefully Beane is proven right.

We all knew this was going to be a bad year for the Bills.  I don't understand the despair on this message board when the Bills look bad during what is clearly a rebuilding year.  We have no O-line, our rookie draft picks are playing like rookies,  and we have no wide receivers, but dammit! we should walk into Foxborough and win right now...

We now have someone who has a real chance to be our franchise QB, we are out of salary cap hell, and we have a full compliment of draft picks.  Contrast that to where we were at the end of last season.  Take a breath people.
