1. Dough "Skin" Flutie will not generate ticket sales.  All but one game are near sellouts allready.

I do not want that midget here.  He has never won a playoff game and I want someone here who can.  He has been on the decline ever since leaving Buffalo.  His record is 2-12 in his last 14 starts.  He lost his last 9 starts in 2001 in SD.

    No thank you.

Name me all of the legions of the playoff-winning, cheap, veteran, available, elusive, effective quarterbacks that you're going to bring in for half of a season instead. Okay, how about one?

  2. Doug Flutie is the answer to the obvious question. Think about it even if you hate his entire digestive system. We don't need to groom someone. We don't need a guy to go out there and win games by himself. We do need a sparkplug veteran who can mask the problems of the offensive line when it rears its ugly head. He is not going to divide the locker room like he did before. He can be a caretaker if Drew goes down for a few plays or games. He can learn an offense fast. He can be a slash player that MM likes. He won't cost a lot. He likely gets cut now that Rivers is signed and playing. He's not a threat to Drew or Losman or Travis Brown. It's POSSIBLE that we can win with him when the defense is good and we have all these weapons.

So go ahead, flame away, say no way in hell, but he is probably the best answer to a short term problem.

  3. Kelly I thought Drew demonstrated a very good knack for stepping up, avoiding the rush and being accurate on short passes last night. In fact so much so that it really stood out and surprised me and made me feel good about what Wyche and Clements have acheived by working with Drew. I agree with your points on MW except for the one play you mentioned. He let his man get around him way too quickly and there was also another rusher coming from the blind side. On the 2 sacks overall Drew had less than 2 seconds to deliver and one of them he smartley "Ate the ball" to avoid disaster.

    10967

He did let his man get th jump and rush too quickly, I agree, but he was pushing him far out of the pocket. Drew did the right thing, he stepped up, and MW's man only got a forearm on him, he would never have made the sack. The other inside rusher got in too quickly and collapsed the pocket, causing the sack. Again, I think I said it was the only play you could blame MW the entire game, and it was only partial blame. Each game so far, Drew has stepped up in the pocket, avoided the rush, and made very good throws for first downs.

  4. Baker made a very nice hit that caused a fumble although it was recovered by the Colts. he also missed one wide open tackle but basically played wel.

Wire made one horrible angle on one running play again but made the INT and had an excellent read and pass break-up.

Aiken had one nice first down catch coming back for the ball, which was a very good play by Drew, stepping up in the pocket to avoid the rush. Aiken will make the team but will find it very hard to see the field.

Greer played well, and looks like he will make it. He looked like he dropped the clear INT but it may have been slightly tipped at the last second by the WR. He covered Harrison very well on a deep throw that he forced MH to catch out of bounds. Gray put Baker and Greer in together with the first teamers and they played pretty good.

Gildon did nothing but I do think they are somewhat saving him. He made a couple nice coverages but they have yet to let him line up as a DE and just go after the passer, which is what I think they still plan on doing.

Smith did decent from what I saw but didnt key on him a lot.

Denney actually had a pretty good game. He was responsible for Wire's INT, and he made a couple other fairly good plays. Neither Kelsay nor Denney seems to have taken the job, both have had moments and both disappeared in all three games.

  5. He was fine, the entire game. There wasnt more than a play or two that his man even made the tackle on the play. Many of them he took out two guys. His pass blocking was very good throughout. On the second sack of Bledsoe, the only play you could possibly blame him for, his man didnt even make the sack and Drew would have easily stepped up in the pocket and got the ball off if the other Colt who made the sack wasn't there. MW pushed his guy out past the pocket and he just got a forearm on Bledsoe but wouldnt have caused a sack. If yo would take the time to just key on MW and watch the whole game, every play, while he wasn't always pretty, he played a whale of a game. When he gets in shape, IMO, he will start to excel.

If Lawrence Smith is even adequate, and there are no major injuries, our line is going to be fine. Villarial is solid, jennings is good and sometimes very good. Teague, again, if you'd bother to actually watch, has been playing well. We just need them all in there at the same time.

Drew has again demonstrated what he cannot due, make quick good decisions, throw accurate short passes, and step up in the pocket to avoid the rush.

  6. 1. We are not billsfanone. Most of the "major" worries that we had in the off season have been addressed and are actually not our greatest worries. Drew looks sharp. He gets the ball off quick and he is accurate. He doesn't force throws. We run, and his play action fakes are excellent. The OL is not great but Pucillo is gone and the LG is doing just fine. We were without our best and third best tackle last night and we didnt get killed. Moulds looks great. Travis Henry will be very good. We have a ton of weapons, and some good coaching and play-calling (the flea-flicker notwithstanding).

    2. Did anyone see that Lee Evans was three yards past his man and even slowing down when Travis Brown threw that putrid interception before he got hurt? Our receiving corps is going to be very good. Even the TEs are making catches. Drew is working the field and getting the ball off to diffeent receivers. I like the play designs a lot. Clements is determined to run, and TH is going to be a monster.

    3. The defense has been consistently getting turnovers. Jerry Gray, without really game-planning, has devised a very interesting defense, and teams never seem to know what the Bills are doing and where the pressure is coming from. There are a lot of zone blitzes. The starters gave up 13 points and scored 7 against the Colts, with TWO drives starting at our 20 yard line, and the only touchdown came from a 4th and 2 play where in the regular season they probably punt. Tackling was the only problem last night and that's something we know we can do. The defense will be better than last year. I think Lawyer Milloy starts against Jacksonville. Even Coy Wire made two good plays on pass coverage.

    4. The special teams sucked big time last night. Mularkey said that there were only 10 men on the field on the blocked punt, which is unacceptable but shows why that could have happened. Nate scares the hell out of me with the ball but is a very good returner. I think McGee should be back there, however. The long KO return had a lot of players on it that are not going to be on the KO team.

    5. I do NOT know if this is true, but my brother just told me he heard on the radio that Travis Brown's MRI was negative. I find that hard to believe but perhaps we're not billsfanone. Frankly, I would say get Neil O'Donnell, or some old vet that can come in and just play because of experience until Brown or Losman is back. Drew is VERY durable, and our hopes are basically shot for this year if he goes down anyway.

    6. Schobel has looked pretty darn good this summer. Been making plays on running downs, which is shocking.

    7. Teague has played well, another huge pre-season worry. Not dominant but right now, all we need is that kind of play by him. When all starters play in the same game, for two weeks, we will not be a horrible line.

    8. Not scoring touchdowns is clearly a concern but I like a lot of what I see from the offense under bad circumstances. This is going to be a frustrating but exciting team, with likely very erratic play from the O. But the D is going to be so good, we only need 20 points a game, and I think we will be able to do it with all of our players in there. We haven't seen our best weapon, Travis, yet. Josh has played well. We're going to create a lot of match-up problems. Willis is nowhere near ready but is going to be able to add an element.

Are we great? Hell, no. Do we have a dozen unanswered questions? Surely. But do we have a ton of talent, a very stout defense, good coaching (and great compared to last year), very good skill players, a ton of veteran and locker room leadership, a host of good young talent, a good amount of speed at most positions. This is a good team and we're going to blow out Jacksonville in the opener

  7. One of the major jobs for a GM is to get the community involved and excited over the team and puts fannies in the seats. TD gets an A for that, too. The St. John Fisher move has been a tremendous success. The regionalization of the team has been great. The changing of the uniforms (although I still hate the away ones) has been a financial success. TD has acquired an excellent front office, and Buffalo has become, surprisingly, one of the best free agents stops for players. That is because of Donohoe.

Unfortunately, his record, because of his poor choice of the first head coach, overrides everything to date. But I would bet anyone that Ralph Wilson is extremely happy with the job that Tom Donohoe has done.

  8. Right!  Leave a pass happy fool in charge of the offense and increase the chance that the franchise QB gets seriously injured.

    Smart move.....not.

    8562

So you're saying you want your GM stepping in and pulling rank on your head coach and demanding they play a certain way, and in effect, calling the plays? Rather than it being your head coach's responsibility?

  9. It really does make perfect sense. The question remains as to how much a) Tom Donohoe as GM, and b ) GW as defensive-trained head coach need to say enough is enough and pull rank on Killdrive. IMO, that is not Donohoe's job at all, and wouldn't want my owner or GM telling my coach who to play or what to do or what to call. It is wholely on GW's shoulders as head coach of the team and this was his biggest failure. Not unlike Marv's biggest failure about not doing anything about Swizzle Stick.

TD COULD have stepped in, and I understand the idea that some fans say it is his team and he needs to stop the train wreck. I just don't believe in the long run it is the best thing to do. We may have won a couple more games last year but with Moulds hurt, we really weren't going anywhere, and it just sets a bad precedent.

This also throws a lot of cold water on TD being the little Hitler or egomaniac and sticking his nose in everything, when from every indication from people that were there it is precisely the opposite.

  10. Thats not what Paul Hamiliton had to say this morning at approx 8:15 am. He said he was standing 10' away from the play and in his opinion TV was definitely trying to hit him, although not trying to "hurt him". His said the shoulder pads were not brushing as has been stated but was a solid hit.

The point is TV knows better and shouldn't have hit him and I'm convinced if TV was a thrid string free agent he would not longer be on this team today. Like Oliver Gibson after his fights with Tucker.

    7102

So how does he explain that it was an intentional solid hit, shoulder pad to shoulder pad, straight on, but that (in Hamilton's) own words, Vincent did not even know that Losman went down?

  11. Losman showed great promise in training camp and the two preseason games which he played. Losman displayed the great scrambling abilities that the Bills have lacked since Doug Flutie. In the two preseason games, Losman hit 9 of 11 passes for 78 yards and scrambled seven times for 80 yards.

Vincent committed the cardinal sin of hitting Losman on the tail end of the rookie quarterback's run around right end. It was claimed to be an accident, but the quarterbacks wear red jerseys and the defense is not to make contact with them at ANY time. Because Vincent is a veteran and is expected to make a huge contribution to the defense, he probably won't be fined by Bills coach Mike Mularkey. However, if this were Bill Parcell's team, Vincent would have been given a one-way ticket out of Buffalo.

While Losman is a rookie and probably wouldn't start any games this season, the loss is huge for the Bills. On WGR Sports radio, they are calling it a disaster for the Bills. Two of the 3 sports talk hosts have rated it a 10 in severity to the team in a 1-10 rating system.

Losman will lose valuable playing time in preseason and possibility of getting into some regular season games. However, the loss of Losman doesn't immediately impact the team that much. However, for the future of Losman, it sets him back at least one year. While some can compare his injury to that which Michael Vick suffered last season in which the Falcons scrambling QB was able to return late in the season, it is doubtful that the Bills will keep him on their active roster. The Bills say the injury will put Losman on the shelf from 8-12 weeks. They may put him on injured reserve where they could bring him back at the end of the season, similar to what they did with Willis McGahee last year. Or they could write this season off completely for the rookie and concentrate on getting him healthy for next season, which would then become yet another rookie year for Losman.

Vick made a remarkable recovery last year, coming back the first week in December after breaking his leg in preseason. After missing 11 with a broken leg, Vick came back with a vengeance,  rambling for 141 yards in his first game back. However, the Falcons were dependent on Vick coming back as he was their No. 1 star. Losman is not the starter and it is doubtful that he would have won the job. However, he does lose a lot of valuable practice time and fill in roles this season.

Losman was definitely the answer to Bledsoe's immobility and was employed as a new offensive weapon in his two appearances. Now, all that is over in one quick misguided hit by Troy Vincent.

    7027

Don't know where to start with that. This has zero effect on the Bills. Losman was not going to play this year. He's third on the depth chart. If he is out two months that means he misses 7 of 16 (and hopefully more) games. He can still have a complete rookie season.

The ONLY one who has claimed this was a misguided hit has been WGR. The Bills didnt, the fans who saw it didn't, Losman didn't, Vincent didn't, the national and local press didn't. If you want to believe this is a disaster for the Bills because WGR talk show hosts said it was, then this is the 8th disaster already this off season. The Bills have zero chance of scoring one point this season according to them.

There is also zero chance that Bill Parcells would cut Troy Vincent after what 99% of the people that saw the play said it wasn't intentional and wasn't TV's fault. In fact, I listened to WGR's reporter yesterday, Paul Hamilton, the only one from GR who saw the play, and his report made ZERO sense. He said that TV barrelled his shoulder into JP with a hard hit (smething NO ONE else had said) and THEN said that Vincent didn't even know that JP fell, and walked back to the huddle. It wasn't until later that TV realized that JP was down and hurt and then went over to him. And Hamilton said that he believed TV was telling him the truth. Is that even possible? A CB drives his shoulder into a quarterback hard, and doesn't know that he falls? That's some top notch reporting. Hamilton also says he believes TV that the shot was not intentional. Again, the guy from GR who saw the play.

  12. I just don't think we need a veteran back-up at all until either Bledsoe or Travis Brown goes down. JP is going to miss half the season, not the whole season. Drew is extremely durable. We have gone with two quarterbacks a lot over the last few years and we can keep Zolman on the practice squad.

I agree with you, Mark. This has no effect on our season. About the only thing it does to our team we will field is give more reps to Travis, who would be losing some to JP.

  13. If it's 10 weeks, he will miss eight weeks of the regular season. That is still eight weeks (and hopefully more) that he will be able to practice full bore. It's a blow, for sure, but not really too bad. He wasn't going to play. I doubt we need to sign a new guy unless something happens to Drew or TB.
