1. i hope he does well...cuz if he stinks up the field, teams are going to start thinking of hitting drew a little harder next time...we'd have no one to field, and everyone knows it.

but i'm gonna stick to the optimism thing. drew won't get hurt, and TB and JPL will be pupped, preserving the roster spots. If matthews shows something, they'll have a tough time choosing the cut: matthews or TBrown. It'll probably be Matthews. So somewhere around week 6, when both our guys come off the pup, what the hell will we tell Matthews? ' Thanks, Buh-bye? '

it's a real roster predicament, methinks.

    12804

TD and MM have already publicly announced they are keeping four quarterbacks on the active roster. There is no crime in telling Matthews, when he is no longer needed, buh-bye. If he plays great, or much better then expected, then and only then would they consider cutting Brown for Matthews, but I truly doubt it. Matthews is gone as soon as TB is ready to play.

  2. So in summary:

In order for our #2 QB and our QB of the future to attend VITAL team meetings (yet not practise) this season we need to place them on the 'active' PUP list. I don't believe anyone could argue against this methodology as JP clearly needs the mental reps this season and Travis Brown is clearly a benefit to Drew as an extra pair of eyes who know the team and the playbook.

Matthews limp arm is a great stop gap until one of our boys is healthy ernought to practise and play - presumably this is sometime in the next 4-6 weeks (max 9 weeks). We can easily afford to lose one of our backup LBs RBs DBs or TEs to accommodate 4 QBs for 8 weeks max. When we cut Matthews later we can bring in another journeyman from FA or upgrade someone from the practise squad to make up for the guy we cut. It's not a big deal.

    12776

If they're on the roster, which they will be, they can attend all meetings and all practices, participating in the practice whenever they are ready, obviously. Here is my summary...

It's a wee bit complicated but they have to carry four QBs on the active roster if they want to do what they want to do.

    1. They will cut Zolman on the last day/cut and put him on the practice squad as emergency when no one claims him.

    2. They will keep four QBs on the active roster (and already publicly said so) for several reasons: If you IR them, they are done for the season and cannot practice with the team. That means Losman's season would be shot and they want him to practice and maybe play some mop up duty in the last half of the season. He will likely be back practicing, even if it is 3/4 speed, by the midpoint of the season.

    3. They apparently like Brown, at least a lot more than they do Shane Matthews, who is signed as a stopgap. TD said yesterday it may be even less than four weeks, for TB, which means he could be back as the #2 after the bye week, which is only two games.

    4. Matthews is a necessity right now, but they won't need him, or likely keep him, after Brown is okay to play as a back-up. So, unless Brown's recovery does not go well, they will lose a roster spot now that they will make up after 3-4 weeks of the season.

    5. This forces them to cut a player they may have wanted to keep for luxury or potential's sake (Lawton, Gildon, Jason Peters, Joe Burns, one of the five safeties, Dorenbos, etc.) and hope that they could get the rookies onto the practice squad (like Peters or Lawton). It is a nusiance more than anything and they might lose a pretty good player that they would LIKE to have but won't really hurt the team right now.

    6. Fortunately, TD has loaded the team with players that can play multiple positions. They can cut Lawton and Burns and Peters and keep three TE's and one FB and still have Neufeld as the HB and back-up FB and keep either Shaud Williams or Simonton. They could cut Pucillo when they normally would have kept him because Tucker and Sobieski can play both back-up guard and back-up center. They could cut an extra CB, and just go with four for a couple games because PP has played it in college and in the NFL before. The roster spot taken last year for A. Brown will be open. Neufeld long snapped last game. There are ways to save the four QBs and still not put the team in jeopardy.

  3. Holy cow fellas. Some of you cannot be serious with this thread. Our number 2 and 3 QBs went down with injuries. Travis could be back week 3. JP maybe after the halfway point. TD goes out and signs a stop gap player until that point. Now you guys are gonna cry that the Bills are carrying 4 QBs. WTF. You don't have anything better to complain about? Injuries happen. When they do, you have to make the best of it. Some of you B word like a bunch of little school girls. Unreal.

    12752

I think posters are only looking for ways to keep the four quarterbacks available but use up only three roster spots at a time, so we don't have to cut one good player that could possibly help (like Dorenbos or Gildon or Peters or Lawton or one of the five safeties we want to keep). I don't think it can be done with the weird NFL rules.

  4. Saw him play under Spurrier in D.C.  He really never got the job done as a starter.  He also took some vicious hits.  He's one of those guys where his typical stat line is something like:

    14 of 31, 159 yds  1 td 2 int's  3 sacks.

    How's that for getting specific?!?

    12746

Specific, perhaps. But wrong. I was shocked to see that a journeyman QB like Shane Matthews actually has more career TD passes than interceptions. Usually they don't. In D.C. as you say...

In 2002 he reunited with Spurrier in Washington and started seven games, completing 52.3 percent of his passes with 11 TDs and 6 interceptions, but he was released at the end of the year and signed as a free agent with Cincinnati last season where he didn't take a snap behind Jon Kitna.

He's a solid stopgap. That is all. But all we need right now.

  5. No other team would take Travis Brown if the Bills gave him away.  And that's been true for the last three years.

Donohoe doesn't micro-manage?  Why has he forced this loser on his coaching staff?  Maybe backup QBs are like kickers to TD; he thinks any bum will do.

    12741

That's just crap. How is he forcing Brown on the roster? Williams cut Brown last year, then we resigned him weeks later. In the off-season TD brought in numerous quarterbacks to look at and possibly sign, Kordell, Doug Johnson, etc. , then drafted another one #1 (to be the back-up and eventual starter) and then the coaches decided that Brown and Losman had played well enough in the mini-camps that they didnt need to have TD sign one of the veterans.

  6. Gruden's an idiot then.  Think back to last year.  We cut someone (can't remember who) when we brought Willis off the PUP.

    12743

Willis didnt actively play or practice in the pre-season games. Gruden distinguished between the "inactive" pre-season PUP list, which Willis was on, and the "active" PUP list, which is what you're talking about. That is how I understand it.

  7. Nope I was right:

    http://www.vertgame.com/rules_defs.html

    PUP List

PUP—physically unable to perform—status is used by clubs to protect a player who is relatively seriously injured but who may recover soon enough to play again that same season. It is similar to major league baseball's 60-day disabled list. Contrast this with injured reserve status, where the player is ineligible for the remainder of the season.

A player who is put on the PUP list before the preseason's first roster cutdown (from 80 to 65 players) must remain inactive through the sixth week of the regular season. At that point, he has a three-week practice "window" before he must either return to the 53-man roster or end his season on injured reserve.

    12720

According to this, it's still a roster spot.

Jurevicius isn't the only player who will be sitting out practice for an indefinite period. Guard Matt O'Dwyer, who tore a pectoral muscle while lifting weights a few weeks ago, also is out.

O'Dwyer was placed on the active physically-unable-to- perform list and Jurevicius on the active non-football injury list, which means they can be activated any time before the Bucs set their 65-man regular- season roster.

At the time the roster is set, Jurevicius and O'Dwyer will have to be activated or placed on the inactive physically-unable-to-perform list, which requires the player to sit out six weeks.

``It doesn't give us extra guys on the roster, but you don't have to put a player on injured reserve,'' Gruden said of the benefits of putting a player on one of the active lists.

``It just basically says that the man is injured. A player will not be able to practice while on the PUP list, but can go to meetings without us having to put him on injured reserve.''

    http://sports.tbo.com/sports/MGBJ80N3BXD.html

  8. I think at least Losman, will go on the Pup list which allows us an extra slot, and the ability to activate him after, I think week 6.  But that means he is out until at least then.  Quite possible that Brown is placed there as well, and depending on how Matthews does, Brown may have an injury settlement and be cut before he is ready to go.

    12710

When they played in the training camp and pre-season games, I don't think you can put them on the PUP. That is "Physically Unable to Play" list, and not the same as an injury while playing list.

  9. Pretty good review and I agree with most of it. Although it has been covered here in a lot of threads, the answers to your questions are that Evans was wide open deep on two plays designed for him, the bomb that was thrown terribly by TB that was intercepted, and the flea flicker. Both were easy touchdowns.

You're also right that the OL was hurting mainly from Sullivan, who would be #3. And the rest of them played pretty good. There were numerous reserves on the long KR, especially Jonathan Smith and McKenzie, who both played it awful.

Wilis is clearly not ready, although I think he will be in a month or two when he builds up strength and speed and confidence. Travis likely would have gained a lot more yards with those plays.

The defense was stout. How much can one complain about three turnovers, scoring one TD themselves, and giving up only 13 points to the Colts starters when one drive started at the Bills 20, one drive at the Bills 12, and the one big play was a 4th a 2 bomb which I believe the Colts likely punt from the 41 in a real game up by a few points.

  10. I say if this chump starts more than 3 threads (god help us in the pre-season he will destroy us before 9/12) we will go from a top 1 board to a top 4 board!

HES THAT BAD!!! HE CANT FRIGGIN POST!

Im suprised alot of you dont think this is a huge setback for us if Rudyc is here a while, infact i gurantee if Rudyc starts those 3 threads...he will make a ridiculous comment in each, maybe costing us a poster or 2 or 3.

I still think our board is solid but not with this assclown typing!!!

  11. PP's contract is a value. He plays both safety positions and not hurt you at either. He can play back-up cornerback in a pinch, as he did in college and at SF, allowing us to keep one less (or a green UFA like Jabari Greer), and he plays well on special teams. PP is a very valuable reserve and well worth it, if not a bargain, at one million.

  12. Adding credence to this point of view is our cap situation--about $1 million under according to Bills Daily.  We would have to in essence trade Gildon's salary for Hugh to be able to sign the backup QB we need.

    12120

I could have sworn that I heard Tom Donohoe say lately that we are in good cap situation and slightly less than we had last year just before the season and before we signed Lawyer Milloy. He came right out and said if there was a good player out there we would have money to sign him.

  13. On paper with the stats in front of you it looks like a solid move.  However, this is Buffalo you're talking about.  On this board RJ was mocked for having a headband and his hat to the back.  I can't imagine the outcry from the fans if we signed Stewart.

The Bills need to sell tickets.  Bledsoe can do that based on his past acomplishments.  This move would not sell more tickets.

However, don't get me wrong I agree with you that on the field he could help us.

    12097

We don't need to sell tickets. Every game this year is going to be a sellout.

  14. I don't think you can resign a player with an injury settlement until after Week 10 (or something like that) - didn't this come up with Christie or Hollis a few years back?

    12064

You're right, forgot about that. That's what the Dolfeons did with Gadsen last year. We're kind of screwed, as now we will likely have to carry four quarterbacks on the roster, unless there is some way around it I am not thinking of. We could easily just have one fullback, as Nuefeld has actually played pretty well this summer, and keep him as a back-up FB, with Lawton on the practice squad. Or we could cut Dorenbos for two or three games, and hope no one picks him up as just a LS right before the season, and go with Neufeld and Teague on kicks. Luckily, also, some of the offensive linemen, Tucker, Sobieski, Sullivan (ugh) play more than one position, so we could get away with cutting one of the back-up OL for a few games. Pucillo anyone?

  15. My idea now is to sign Doug Johnson (or second, Shane Matthews) today. It is probably Johnson as they brought him in earlier this year for a workout. Then play him half of the game on Thursday, or more, helping him with the plays. Cut Zolman right before the season and sign him to the practice squad, as I doubt anyone would pick him up, and we don't need him even if they do. If possible, make an injury settlement with Brown, with a guarantee to sign him once he is healthy, probably during the bye week. That way we can keep Bledsoe, Johnson and Losman on the active roster, and not have to take up four roster spots. We have a little bit of cash available (apparently, according to TD, just under what we had last year before we signed Lawyer). This may cost us a little more for Travis Brown but it will be worth it not getting rid of a player we may need.

  16. Actually, the disaster QB the last couple years was Moulds, and probably still is. Although after MM saw Bobby Shaw tossing the ball around he was quite impressed, so perhaps Shaw will be it. Expect Shaw to throw a reverse option once or twice this year.

  17. Kelly, I almost always consistantly agree with you, but man, you are way off on this one.  Even if Flutie were to come back and accept his back-up role like a good team player (I seriously doubt this could happen, but I will go along just for fun) it is not Flutie who would create the turmoil and controversy, it would be the relentless Bills fan base.  Like him or not, Bledsoe is our QB, and he looked like a guy who lost a lot of confidence last season.  I don't think TD would be interested in the slightest in opening this pandora's box.  It would certainly be an interesting scenario, particularly for Bills and New England area sports fans, but is not at all what we need.  Maybe if Flutie had never been in Buffalo before, it would make more sense.  But, it is not going to happen...if I recall, TD and Flutie are not real big fans of eachother.  Kordell  or O'Donnell are more likely options IMO.  Short term, Gannon makes sense.

    11400

Perhaps you're right but at 41, and what he was like in San Diego, I don't see Flutie as being a problem here, and I doubt even Flutie fans would really want to see him get on the field much. MM is not going to bench Bledsoe for Flutie. And all we need him for is one half-to two thirds of a season as a guy who can just walk up and play in a disaster and not automatically tank the season. I like O'Donnell and Gannon, too, and maybe even Kordell, I just don't think that they are going to be available to do just this, they are going to want more. If Flutie is cut, this guy, be it an arroganant ass or what, just wants to play on a team, and I doubt another NFL team would be willing to sign him that late. Unless they lose their #2 and #3 and don't have any confidence in their #4 like us.

  18. The problem with the waiver wire idea is that we need this guy, whoever he is, yesterday. The best of the waiver wire guys will not likely be cut until the last cut, unless it is a pity move by an organization to let a player find another team. Looking at the rosters, I am not sure there are that many guys that fit this description about to be released this week. We need someone that can pick up the offense quick, and likely play Thursday. We are not going to find that guy tomorrow.

We could just bag the last game, let Zolman play the whole thing to see if he is even worth the #3. Bringing in a Redman, or Shane Matthews, even if it is just for 1-2 weeks may be the way to go, and then get the best we can on the last cut. It's a tough choice. Luckily, Drew is durable.

  19. Just remember, he is a TD guy.  If anyone can coax him to play, it would be the smooth TD.

    11104

True. And I like him as an option. I think he would be ideal, and earlier this morning in my first post I said that he would be my first choice. I just don't think he is going to do it under these circumstances. He wants to play if he signs. We would just be asking him to warm the bench for a guy who rarely, rarely comes out, and after half the year likely give up the back-up job to a rookie Losman. This is not a great, itchy scenario for O'Donnell to agree to. He's not going to do it out of the goodness of his heart. Just if it is a one last chance to make a run at a Super Bowl and get on the field. It's possble, and I would bet anything that TD has already made a call to his agent, but IMO very unlikely that he signs with the Bills.

  20. Ever heard of Neil O'donnell.  May not be the most elusive, but he meets all the other "criteria" that we must have to meet your standards.

    11087

Except available. he already turned down a few teams after him, including recently the New England Patriots. He has been approached by at least four teams in the last year and said no to all of them. The Patriots he said maybe in December if they're making a playoff run.
