Ravens averaged  a bit over 5 yards per carry. Strongly disagree on the improvement of run D

According to ESPN they averaged 3.4 / carry.  And the only reason it's that high is because of Jackson.  Maybe you heard them talking specifically about Jackson who was the only player averaging above 5?

  2. Okay, there were obviously a lot of negatives from the game.  But what about the few things that they actually did right?

    From my point of view:

    • Run defense looked improved
    • Tremaine Edmunds looked sharp from what I could see.  He made a few plays
    • Marcus Murphy returning kickoffs looked dangerous
    • Bojorquez (spelling?) seemed to do a decent job punting

    Anything else?

Did you watch him play in the preseason games? he looked like he was running the routes at 50%. he had to be releases. Good effort on Bean for giving it a shot and really didnt give up anything for him.

Yeah idk why Beane would say it had anything to do with him learning the playbook though.  I agree though.  His play on the field said enough about why he was cut

...I believe all of Bills Mafia will be holding their collective breaths.  I know I will be.  Even though I have no confidence in Peterman I also feel somewhat ashamed that I'm fearful of disaster when he takes the field.

If I step back and take a wider view Peterman starting is really a "no lose" situation and I understand why McD made that decision.  If Peterman plays well and the Bills are winning it's a fantastic story of redemption and perhaps Peterman becomes a trade chip.  If he doesn't play well or is injured, it's far easier for McD to go from Nate to Josh than vice-versa and the Allen Era begins.

I'm going to try and enjoy the ride.  Be ready for a huge exhale after that first pass attempt.

Unless that first pass is an interception?

That's the part I don't get.  If you are the worse team in the league, you're not going to win 6 games.

I've taken it as just meaning that the parity in the league is better than usual.  Looking at the list of teams, it's hard to find the equivalent of the Browns from last year.  There are no clear cut losers this year

  6. Bills:  Projected wins:  6.3 (Ranked 32)

Jets:  Projected wins:  6 (Ranked 31)

Browns:  Projected wins:  6 (Ranked 30)

So the Bills have more projected wins but they aren't better than the Jets despite playing more or less the same schedule?  What?

I mean, I don't think we are going to be good... but ranked 32nd overall is kind of surprising.

Josh is obviously the future, but hopefully this staff has the smarts to not put the kid in there for game #1.   He and the offense were overwhelmed by Cincinnati's starting D-line just 5 days ago.  He's not ready to go into a hostile environment and read a pro defense, have good communication in/out of the huddle, audible and execute at a high level.   It's just not gonna happen in this game.

Baltimore is back after a disappointing 2017.  They will have a very good team this year.  Their D is going to be playing with their hair on fire opening day.  I think they'd still beat the Bills even if they started Lamar Jackson (which they won't).   Do I think Nate Peterman will do well if he gets the start?  I doubt it but I'd rather see him in there for this particular game than Allen.   I think Nate has a year under his belt to notice pre-snap reads better than JA and to handle the difficult communication that will be required in a loud road stadium.

If Peterman surprises people and plays well, then it's a nice bonus for everyone and the coaching staff will have a good situation on their hands.  If he lays a big egg (like many will expect him to do)...then it's very justified and easy for McDermott to name Josh Allen the starter for the home opener vs. LA.     I'd much rather see Allen get his first start in a friendly environment than on the road where he will literally have almost no chance to succeed.

95% Agree.  It's the logical way to do this.  You either jack up Peterman's value when he plays well or you hand the reigns over to Allen and get him experience when Peterman fails.

The only thing I disagree on is how much time Peterman should be given.  If he fails in the Ravens game, it will be too early to take him out.  If Peterman isn't performing well, I'd probably think about replacing him 5 to 8 games into the season.  The reason is this:

    1)  you give peterman a chance to rebound (he seems to learn from his mistakes.  notice how much better he has been this preseason compared with last year's preseason and the disaster vs the chargers)

    2)  when allen comes in, there is no pressure to win immediately from the fans/media because we will likely already be all but eliminated from the playoffs.  he gets a free half season to learn without people calling for him to be replaced, released, etc.

    3)  some of the o-line issues might have worked themselves out (either through waiver wire pickups or the guys just learning how to mesh) by this point in the year, so allen might not be getting sacked 5 times in one half anymore.

    4)  gives him some time to learn how game preparation is done at the NFL level, prior to actually having to do it himself.

  8. I fall into the "both" category.  Let Peterman start, he's earned it.  He has looked good all preseason.  Give the guy a shot, forget what happened last year.  If he turns things around, it's a great feel good story and he will become trade bait or our franchise QB. If he doesn't impress then you let Allen play once Peterman has proved he is not the guy and the Bills are out of it.

  9. He has played well this preseason.  There is no arguing that.

Can he keep that success going into the regular season?  I guess the coaching staff will have to decide that.  But given the game film thus far in the preseason, it would appear that he has the best chance of succeeding this season (behind this o-line and in this offense).

"I read a book in the offseason by Mark Manson, the New York one, No. 1 bestseller on the Times [New York Times' bestseller list], so those things happen and that's it. But I respect the hell out of him and his team and he won a Super Bowl. We lost, and when you lose you question everything so I don't have a problem with it."

^ Doug Marrone speaking about Pederson's comments.  The name of that book?  "The Subtle Art of Not Giving a F---: A Counterintuitive Approach to Living a Good Life."

When I read this in the ESPN article.. I died laughing.  Doug Marrone, comedian.  Who would have thunk it?  Article:  http://www.espn.com/nfl/story/_/id/24437171/doug-marrone-takes-subtle-dig-doug-pederson-shrugs-eagles-coach-criticism-book

  11. What I really liked about Peterman this preseason is that he hasn't been throwing TOO early, aside from that one pass on the first drive that was nearly a pick six.  He has gotten into trouble with releasing it too quickly and allowing the defense to jump the route, but I feel like that tendency is slowly starting to fade.  As long as he can continue to work that out of his system, I feel like he could definitely be a serviceable NFL QB.

I will say though, if that throw had been a pick six, which it should have been, we would be singing a much different tune at the moment.

  12. The way I've been given to understand it is that "the process" is just a way of going about your daily business.  You study hard, you practice hard, you eat right, etc etc.  The process isn't the way that they draft players or their strategy regarding free agents, it's just working hard daily and becoming a better coach or player.

So do I trust the process?  In other words, do I trust that working hard will lead to better results?  Yes.  I do.

Coleman and all the OTHER WRs are Germane to this discussion because there are 6 spots. And in reality 1 or 2 up for grabs.

What I do know is Foster is an UDFA and has a big hill to climb to make a roster

I don't think he ever said Foster was going to make the 53.  He said he was practice squad material, which is reasonable for a player that hasn't completely put it together yet

I thought that all the QBs played well, and Teller, Ray-Ray, and Wallace helped themselves. Foster showed an ability to get behind the defense and made a good catch on the ball that drifted out of bounds, but he needs some work. Looks like a PS candidate.

People are really down on Foster after that game, but I agree with you.  The speed/ability to create separation can't be taught, the rest of it can be practiced/learned until it is second nature.  He is the ideal practice squad player-you hope he can learn to put his  athletic abilities to use, but if he doesn't you haven't invested a roster spot
