I agree that the Oline struggled, but they were a strength last season. We drafted 3 lineman this season, and have Ford back healthy. I think they addressed the line to a degree. Dawkins was awful, probably not nearly back to 100% after missing most of camp with covid that had him in the hospital. Our offense played into the hands of the agressive steeler secondary, calling plays that allowed them to make plays behind or at our line of scrimmage. Allen wasn't sharp, Beasley had a key drop, Allen missed an easy TD pass to Sanders and poor execution on 3rd and 4th downs, which weren't a problem last season.
We did address the OL, but not the way that we’ll notice immediately.
Brown looks like an absolute future stud, but he isn’t replacing a healthy Dawkins or Williams yet.
Doyle and Anderson are development guys / depth this year.
We still have Ford, Feliciano and Boettger at the Guard spots. Everyone wanted those spots addressed after last season, and we simply kept the status quo… then proceeded to play the KC game all over again to open the season.

The corner opposite Tre will always get picked on- he got some ***** calls against him.
Our line was a strength last season, Allen often had all day to throw.
Not having balance last season was not a problem, we actually had a pretty good offense last season.
Absolutely they will, and Levi caught some bad breaks, but he still gave up the sole offensive TD for Pittsburgh and committed PI. (Yes, it was probably PI, but it didn’t need to be called.. especially after that Tre White bs earlier in the half).
We’re trying to win a Super Bowl, not just make the playoffs. Our OL and lack of balance (or the ability to be balanced) is why we lost to the Chiefs in the AFCCG. Offense looked eerily similar today.

I’d agree with those that didn’t feel great opening against a non-division team who we’ve beat the last two years.
I don’t feel that way with Miami.
The Steelers have a strong culture and are a proud organization. Losing to a team back to back means something to them.

Breida getting stonewalled on 3rd and short was brutal.
I was all for Breida over Moss, but that play was pretty big.

What were the problems last season that happened today?
Levi Wallace getting picked on.
The interior of our line getting rag dolled…. This time with the added bonus of our tackles struggling too.
No balance on offense, whatsoever. I’m fine throwing it every play, but when it’s not working, maybeee try to switch it up.

When you spend off-season money on Emmanuel Sanders, don't address the running game, and don't address your interior line it sort of tips people off as to what you want to do. Their best 5 players on offense are WRs. That's not a good thing but it's reality. When they take a WR off they are downgrading the talent on the field. None of their TEs is remotely as good as the WR who would come on. None of their RBs are remotely as good as the WR they could try to throw to instead. Again, this is not a positive thing. They would be better off with less assets invested in WR and a little more in interior OL and be a better football team.
Ironically, Knox and Singletary were the most impressive playmakers out there today …. In their limited touches. -

Yep. Too much arm, not enough control. Most QBs throw it in a way where the receiver has to adjust to be in the right place horizontally to catch it. Allen throws it so they have to SPRINT vertically to try to get to it, and they can't.
Only one QB in the league has the luxury of deep ball overthrows not actually being overthrown, and he wears red most of the time.-

It's not rocket science.
Look up the numbers.
Allen vs the Blitz is awesome....I think he was at 70% in 2020
Vs zone not as good but he doesn't see zone as much. Teams can't often bring consistent pressure with just 4. So they blitz and Allen made teams pay last year.
But if you can get home quick with 4 or even 3 like Pittsburgh did or the Chiefs before them, Josh and most every single QB is going to struggle - and the Steelers secondary is excellent.
The only front 4 (especially the interior) we'll see like that is Washington and Tampa. And both those secondaries are not as good or even close to as good as Pittsburgh.
Is their secondary excellent?
I know we’re all wanting to crown their defense as elite, but coming into the game they were missing Tuitt, Ingram was old and they were starting a bunch of randoms in the secondary outside Haden/Fitzpatrick.
They definitely looked elite, but I need to see them do this again before I chalk it up to them just having the best defense in the league.
Im assuming other teams will at least attempt to be more balanced and/or protect their QB better than five matadors.

They were clearly Offside...do qbs usually wait to see the flag come out before they throw it deep in situations like that? I'm not sure
Seems like QBs are usually pretty sure.
Can’t remember seeing what happened today, happen too often.

Omg… the wind again. I honestly can’t handle home game wind talk again this year. Not yet at least.-

Agreed. Also, Allen struggled from the start. Open Sanders badly overthrown-- you can't miss plays like that against a top-notch opponent.
Eh, even the best QB’s miss those from time to time… but with Allen, it’s more than time to time.
He needs to tighten up on the deep throws… it’s getting to the point where when he uncorks it, I just assume it’s air-mailed over our guys head.

1st and Goal at the 10.
Down 10.
Still anyone’s game if we get a TD.
Run. Run. Pass to the RB in the flat.
What the literal **** was this!?
Josh Allen, these WR’s and Dawson Knox and we don’t make one throw, of our 5 billion throws, into the end zone in this moment of the game!??
Someone make this make sense.

I feel like it was a sight snap by Morse. Twice today Allen played liked he had an Offside on a hard count that was not. I feel like Mcdermott is going to be with Daboll alot over the next 48 hours.
Allen is fantastic. Still Daboll needs to scheme up some easy plays. Wrinkles the defense wasnt ready for. The offense was the same thing from the second half of the game from last year.
Yup. That 4th down and the rushed end of quarter play. Both times Allen clearly thought he had a free play.
Just an all around disjointed day for the offense.

The reason Daboll got so much attention from national pundits last year is that a lot of outside observers think he took a bad QB in Allen and made him produce at an elite level. When I've always felt the exact opposite is the case. He has a maddening habit of refusing to make changes when things aren't working. If the other team is consistently getting pressure with 4, bring in extra blockers. Set up screens. Run play action to open up quick throwing windows. We saw none of that today. Every pass play was shotgun empty and Pittsburgh countered it with simple zone coverages and rushing 4. I don't mind that the offense struggled a bit early on, but by the 2nd half we should have figured it out and instead the offense got worse. That's on Daboll.
We’ve had a handful of struggling offensive games under Daboll. All against good teams.
Chiefs x2 2020
Titans 2020
Steelers 2021
Notice how we didn’t change anything against the Steelers 2020. A game in which our offense struggled all first half. We just did what we do, better.
Seems to me, Daboll doesn’t adjust, he just thinks if we execute better, it won’t matter.

Honestly, the thing that makes me annoyed is that so many fans here lamented our Guards and CB2 all offseason.
We drafted a pass rusher in Round 2, who wasn’t even active.
Today, our IOL was a disgrace and Levi was the only true weak link in a strong defensive performance.
Also, we have multiple ST captains. Our coach is obsessed with carrying multiple roster spots for special teams aces. To have a punt block for a TD knowing all that is incredibly frustrating.

I feel like 4th down where Allen launched into double coverage to Davis summed up the offense today.
McDermott, with no rhyme or reason decides to go for this one.
Allen thinks he draws Pit Offside. No flag. Play looks completely disjointed. Allen launches a 30 yard pass when we only need a few yards. Davis gets lit up. No chance. Turnover on downs.

Look we never ever run a screen or draw every defense is going to sit in a base nickel and dare us to run it’s not rocket science…if Josh isn’t 1985 John Elway every week we don’t score many points…even in a bad game the guy has 325 total yards of offense…he should not have to throw 51 times and be our best short yardage back for this team to win
Josh was ok today. Not good, not bad.
He’s getting paid to be great.
He can be just good sometimes.
Can’t have too many more of these meh games though. They will happen, but home opener, first game of the season, fresh off getting paid wasn’t the ideal time to have one.

As far as an offensive game plan, everyone has a plan until you get hit in the face. The bills got hit in the face when the steelers front 4 could not be stopped. Watt could have had 8 sacks if Allen wasn't an athlete.
Titans 2020Chiefs 2020 x2
Steelers 2021
All games where we got punched in the face.
Problem is, our answer seems to be, just go what we do … but do it better….
See: Steelers 2020, where we ran the same sets but plugged up Hayward’s penetration and got the ball to Diggs over and over.

Plenty of teams might have better 1/2/3 WRs than the Bills.
What sets us apart is that our 1 is elite and our 2/3/4 are very good.
Most of the good 1/2/3’s don’t have a 4 like Gabriel Davis.

I don’t want to say the sky is falling at all, so I say this hesitantly. I don’t want to hear about how great the Steelers are as an excuse. I didn’t realize the Stillers were considered contenders first of all, and secondly, we are Super Bowl contenders, you shouldn’t be getting bullied by Pittsburgh at home on opening day. Today’s game had the same complexion as the two Chiefs losses last season, that is at least slightly concerning.
Yup.. Chiefs x2, Titans, Steelers, all just bullied us all game - and much of it is OL issues and all of a sudden Daboll’s play calling becomes bizarro world.
Steelers have one of, if not, the best DL’s in football.. but you have to be able to counter punch and this coaching staff has not shown the ability to do that against good teams.

You guys act like we lost to the Jets. I've been telling people to not take the Steelers lightly, their defense is as good as it gets in the NFL and Roethlisberger is a smart veteran. Absolutely crazy for people to think the Bills were just going to come in and steam roll a 13-3 team w/ a huge chip on their shoulder.
Game could've went either way minus a stupid drop by Sanders and questionable call back on the White interception. Week 1 is ALWAYS crazy, I know the play calling was atrocious, but they can build from this. We'll see where their heads are really at next week. If they drop 2 in a row then I'll start panicking. I am no where near throwing away the season like some people here. Have a little faith.
Im sure we’d be losing our minds, no matter how we lost, but there’s some justifiable “it’s how we lost” in this thread.
We drafted a 2nd round pass rusher who’s inactive, and re-signed a guy on the OL that many of us didn’t think was worth re-signing. Ok, coaches think that’s the move, fine… well, our OL was dominated all game, and Daboll looked like he got body snatched by Johnny 5-wide. Maybe we should’ve used that 2nd Round Pick on IOL, like many Bills fans were clamoring.
We gave up a blocked punt on a team that has multiple special team captains.
Defense, meh. Allen, meh.
Coaching and the OL… TRASH
-
Just, kinda, in shock at how much the Steelers dominated our Offense.
Josh Allen wasn’t bad, but he wasn’t good.
OL was a disgrace and McDermott/Daboll need to have a come to Jesus moment this week with whatever they were thinking going into Week 1. Outcoached by a mile.

Utterly dominated in the second half.
McDermott and co. need to own this one.
Josh Allen and the OL, honorable mentions for a dumpster fire Game 1.
-
I apologize to anyone who criticized our secondary approach.
Hilarious that we have a 2nd round pass rusher inactive (justifiably so) with IOL and CB2 looking like this today.

I didn’t say we should. You said we addressed the OL… and we did, but not necessarily in ways that we will see right now.
Ford/Boettger/Feliciano is not a good group of guards. Random blind spot of McBeane.
Lots of posters here called alarm to it this off-season, and they were all looking quite clairvoyant today.
We’ll see how they respond, but I can’t lie and say watching that, with a 2nd Round pick inactive, isn’t frustrating.
