Tampa runs Buck Sweep on 1st and 10 and catch Buffalo rolling 3 weak. Buffalo is beat at birth right here based on alignment since they have Rousseau lined up in a 7 tech instead of a 9 and their Sam linebacker (Milano) playing a 50 and having to set the edge from depth. Milano's responsibility is to set the edge so he is going to take on the first puller with outside leverage forcing Edmunds to take on the second puller with outside leverage and force the play back inside to the Will/Nickel (Johnson) and Strong Safety (Poyer). Johnson missed the tackle and Poyer got worked by the Left Tackle as the Alley player allowing the touchdown. Edminds fit his gap assignment. Anyone who says he overran the play doesn't understand football and run fit assignments.

We’re *****. Teams will play drop 8 against us the rest of the year because they know they can get pressure with 3. Beane needs to figure out how to draft the trenches or we’re doomed.

You sound like the guy I work with who called himself an NFL guru. Those words actually came out of his mouth, "I'm an NFL guru".
He's wrong about literally half the stuff he spews.
Don’t call myself a guru but I do understand football. Most people here don’t understand that defenders have run fits. Everyone yells at players as if they are playing “see ball get ball”.

At least if I educate you about how football actually works you’ll be a more well informed sorry sack of *****. 🤣

Man… really thought Bills fans actually had a better understanding of how football works… the lack of football knowledge around here is comical

You guys getting mad at edmunds don’t understand football and how run fits work lmfao…

Absolutely right. Why do we have 180 lbs defensive backs out there, when NE has 8 men on the LOS and one receiver into block and 2 backs?
I keep watching the play and the Bills were lined up very loose. Again I'm no expert, but while the Bills had a threat of a passing game, the Pats line stood up well. Conversely the Pats made no attempt to even look like they would throw and the Bills didn't seem to adapt.
Here's highlights from the 1st quarter, Usually there is 5 vs. 5 on LOS. The Bills are playing tight and the Pats have receivers spread out. The TD run the Pats had 8 on the LOS vs. the Bills 4.
They seemed in the wrong defense there.
I don't think you understand how football works my friend.

Again I ask, why did we look so loose on Defense and weren't crowding the LOS, when they showed no intent of passing?
I'm a layman when it comes to defense, but everyone looked lost and we had only 4 on the LOS. They had 1 receiver on the line, I guess a TE and two backs & showed no intent to pass the ball.
BTW wake me up when the Bills bust an easy 65 yard run like that....
Yeah, this statement doesn't make much sense buddy. We were playing our base 4-3 personnel grouping with Cover 3 behind it. Technically we had 6 on the LoS. Wallace could be considered a 9 tech, Epinesa a 5, Oliver a tilt 1, Phillips a tilt 3, Rousseau a 6 and Poyer a 9. No one was lost - they just got beat.
I also don't know what "they showed no intent to pass the ball means". Are you basing this off of the personnel on the field? The offensive formation? The tendencies they showed so far in the game?

for me a lot of defensive line play is instinctual and sometimes it looks like he is overthinking. Phillips is a smart player but if you watch a vet like Lotulelei in the middle for example, you'll see him in 1tech getting pieces of guards in zone to buy an extra half step for the LBs, keeping his footwork balanced when he needs to have a different angle...I rarely see that ability to adapt out of Phillips. He knows his responsibilities but doesn't have any counters when the situation calls for it
That's not insticts - that's coaching - fundamentals and technique. Phillips ball get off is slow af and he lacks athleticism. It'll always hold him back.

It was so badly played there are many players we can blame.
Correct. It was a total defensive collapse.

Here's Chris Simms breaking it down:

His opinion is that Milano didn’t stay disciplined, overplayed it, and left a wide open cutback lane.
Oof that’s a bad breakdown. They 100% were not slanting the front.

I guess this is a good example of how people can see the same play differently
Oliver is lined up at the 1tech but doesn’t command a double…so he imo needs to stack his man at the LOS and make them pay for only blocking him 1v1. Instead he fires off downhill…takes himself out of the play
Oliver is a tilted 1 tech and is responsible for the weakside A gap. He CAN NOT under any circumstances "stack" and allow himself to get reached. He wasn't the only one on the line that this happened to by the way. See my previous post breaking down all the failures.

What technique? He got reached.

If Edmunds stays in the MIDDLE...as in MLB...this play doesn’t happen....
If he stays in the Middle then he gets reached by the guard who climbs to the second level untouched and we're not gapped out.
On 12/8/2021 at 11:41 PM, Kelly's Heroes said:Watched this play a few times, it appears Edmunds is way out of position. He almost looks like he is not even looking at the play and reading it but rather running to a spot. Unfortunately, that spot was not the final destination, he totally was out of position. The Guard got a good block on him and steered him away to the wrong destination as well. Almost appears it was a designed option run. For the Bills Harris read it right.
The kid has all the tools but too many people let him pass on his mistakes. The press has you believe he is a superstar. He may never reach his potential , if he is reading his press clippings. He frequently over pursues on both run and pass plays. Now, maybe he expected Hyde to be the safety valve on the play and seal it up, that did not happen because like Edmunds he over ran the play too. Some other things on the play I noticed was again we see Oliver was unable to get off his block fast enough to provide backside support. Last statement, the LB captain needs to call a time out on the play to get out of the nickle defense. Nickle may be the right call but not in the conditions of the game Monday night. Kudos to Belicheck he out coached McD on this round.
We were in Base not Nickel.

Which was 3 plays after the terrible fumble by Breida (again a terrible call on first down), when the Bills were marching with the wind.
Jones had not attempted a pass & it is 3rd & 5 against the wind (Bob Seger anyone?).
Peyton Manning hit the nail on the head..... No receivers spread out and 8 Patriots on the line vs. 4 Bills and LB's & DB's looking ready for a pass downfield.
Sorry I'm not about X&O's, but what were the Bills thinking NE was going to do?
Bad fits all around. Wallace can't get widened he needs to replace straight downhill when he see's the crack by the WR. Epenesa can't run himself upfield and instead fight pressure with pressure so he doesn't get washed. Oliver, Phillips, and Rousseau all get reached which allows the guards to work directly up to Termaine and Milano untouched. Dotson needs to work more downhill with his attack steps and meet the FB at the LoS tight off of the WRs butt and actually leverage him. Tremaine and Milano can't get kicked when defeating their blocks (that cut back right into where Milano should be. Ultimately it comes down to Hyde over-running the play though. He's the last line of defense in single high coverages. A perfect storm of nearly everyone not executing their responsibility.

You guys are wild. Defenses have personnel packages - not formations. The offense dictates how you align regardless of the personnel you have on the field so it ultimately would put a lesser athlete in space the majority of the time. Leave the coaching to the coaches fellas.

High Schools and Colleges have been running this for years - it's funny to me that this is being played off in the NFL as something "new" and "innovative".

If only we drafted Wyatt Teller, a top NFL guard now, when he was sitting there in the 5th round.... Oh wait....We did.
Highest-Graded Players of 2020:
1. Aaron Rodgers - 94.9
2. Wyatt Teller - 93.8
3. Patrick Mahomes - 93.0
3. Travis Kelce - 93.0
Hey whatever, maybe he was hurt too much and didn't have his technique down. Either way we let an elite player go for almost nothing, that sucks. Indy still saying that about Jerry Hughes 10 years later.
The one thing Beane has shown us is that he will make aggressive trades and personnel moves, and that the roster has improved each year. No need to doubt the guy now.
Beane:
“This is not going to be a a free agency where we can be as aggressive. We’ve been aggressive with that because we built up the resources,” he said. “I would not anticipate any blockbuster moves of the Stef Diggs type or some of the moves we made the year before in free agency. It’s really gonna be plugging some holes depending on who we lose. And then the onus is on us to have a strong draft.”
Also remember we don't have a 4th round pick this year because of Diggs trade, so hopefully we draft well and retain the guys we like.
Another massive advantage we have to look forward to is the return of our head coach, OC and DC AGAIN next year. Josh still cap friendly for the next two seasons even if he signs this offseason.
He's a great gap scheme guard. We are a zone run team. Need guys who can move, work up to a second level, and block in the open field.

We have some pretty athletic interior lineman. Morse may be the best center on the move. They schemed a lot of center movement blocks out of the offense this year for whatever reason. If they bring Morse back they need to get back to what he did his 1st year here. Get him out in space.
Was referring more to our guard spots.

Size is nice, but athleticism on the interior of our OL (or lack there of) is what cost us a trip to the Superbowl. An investment into some dominant edge rushers is much needed as well.

So if I see one more person suggest that Edmunds is either unwilling or unable to take on an OLmen and shed, am I now free to slam my head into a wall out of frustration?
Dude was 100% on his fits in those three clips.

Also the reason why the pass rush wasn't there. Buffalo usually allows their DL to penetrate on any given down. There was a more concerted effort, from what i saw, to keep those guys home this week in order to prevent gaps from widening. I think it came at a cost though.
