Is Darryl Talley on the wall?  He had a great career.  And was a big time leader on the team for many years.

Schobel was good for the nine years he played for us.  But I don't think he dominated game in and game out.  Was he better then Jerry Hughes?  Interesting debate there.

Bennett was tremendous.  Made many big plays for many years.  Was a great athlete.  Didn't he return a blocked FG against the Broncos late in a game at Rich in 90 that got us going in our first Super Bowl Season?  I have this memory in my head going nuts watching that.  He should be on the Wall for sure!

Moulds was a beast at WR.  Yes he should get serious consideration.

Butch Byrd was before my time.  But his numbers look tremendous.  So was Edgerson.  Heard he was really good also.  Bills had a lot of really good players in the 60's it sounds like.  Aren't George Saimes and Tom Sestak on the wall.  Anyone know much about them?

One of my favorites from the draught years was Terrence McGhee.  Tremendous Kickoff return man.  Very good DB.  Good team leader.  Just a very good football player.  If he was around today, would be a great slot corner this decade also.   Injuries took their toll at the end on him, like they do to so many in the sport.

I always thought Ruben Brown was a bit overrated.  Took a lot of penalties.  Jim Ritcher was a dam good O lineman.  That Super Bowl line was tremendous.

As a kid I remember watching Bob Chandler.  He was special.  He was our Fred Bilitnekoff.   Jerry Butler had some great games also.  Too bad injuries cut his career short.

If Antoine Winfield had not been allowed to leave, he would be on the wall today.  And of course Kyle.  He will be on the wall at some point in the next 5 years.

Aaron Schobel was significantly better than Jerry Hughes

Wow.  I haven't been on the message boards much this weekend, and was absolutely shocked that some Bills fans are upset with this pick.  Defensive End was among our Top 2-3 biggest areas for improvement (I wouldn't really say we had huge needs anywhere).  And based on the rankings by most experts, this was a massive steal.  For some perspective, here are where some of the main sports sites ranked AJ Epenesa before the draft:

    NFL.Com:  #45th Overall

    ESPN:  #23rd Overall

    Fox Sports:  #31st Overall

    CBS Sports:  #34th Overall

    NBC Sports:  #28th Overall

    Pro Football Focus:  #20th Overall

    The Draft Network:  #27th Overall

    Sports Illustrated:  #24th Overall

    Sporting News:  #20th Overall

    Draftek:  #23rd Overall

Averaging these 10 sites, Epenesa was around the 27th-28th ranked prospect in the entire draft.  We got him at #54.

I think the displeasure/concern is he isn't super althetic and timed pretty poorly across the board.

So who gets displaced in the Nickel? Milano or Edumonds? That would easily push Klein to the bench and given that they put in a decent chunk of change into him I think they probably want him to have some significant role no the defense.

That's were the fun starts. With 4.45 speed and coverage skills of a former DB, you could use your base defense to create confusion. Or they mix and match when Taron enters the game.

Sorry for all these questions but this seems to be a heavily specialized and nuanced position. But in my mind Edumonds and Milano are the starting LB's in the Nickel with Klein the third LB in the 4-3 package. So I don't see an open LB spot. I also think that Milano and Edumonds are both fast young LB's who cover well. I just don't see where the fit is on the Bills seeing as they have two good LB's who can cover.

This player would basically be a starting LB and is faster/quicker that 49/58.

It could allow us to be in our "base" defense and still cover 3 wide. Or put this player on a TE.

I couldn't argue there, but another Edmunds type could solve the 'problem'.

Agreed, but they are few and far between. In theory, this player will have better coverage skills and more agile than even Edmunds.

The sacrifice would likely be getting off blocks, but Matt Milano does fine.

Alternatively, eventually we could just get another elite LB with the necessary wheels.

Sometimes I believe we overthink this stuff.

The 'Big Nickel' strikes me as simply being a way to adjust to certain situations, where you haven't got the necessary base talent. i.e. 3, 3 down LBs.

I understand the necessity to do this currently, but I don't think it has to be an approach set in stone, at all.

I think the main difference is elite agility and explosiveness. These guys are probably better in coverage. Also hard to nab truly elite LB outside the first half of round 1.

Right now, the Bills defense would probably look like this, depending on the package:

    - AJ Klein starting at SLB in base 4-3 looks

    - Taron Johnson starting at NCB in pure nickel defense against 3 wide receivers

    - Siran Neal starting at NCB in the big nickel

From what I understand (from those who studied Carolina's old defensive packages), Sean McDermott actually prefers to go with the Big Nickel formation more often.  We just haven't had an exact fit in his first 3 years here.  The recent interest in Kyle Dugger and Jeremy Chinn is causing several to connect the dots.

Right, a rookie buffalo nickle basically sends Klien and Neal to the bench (eventually)
