We were we weak at cornerback going into the draft,  and until our rookie DB's play this year in some real game situations.  We will see where we stand after 4 games.  I bet their first quarterly report card is going to be about a C+.

I just don't see our rookie CB's shutting down the receivers we are going to face in the first 4 games this year.  It might be fairly ugly at times too.  Another concern is officiating this year,  and them calling more closely contested pass coverage.  If they call it really tight and don't let the incidental contact happen we are screwed.  Rookies are are not going to play at that high of a level right out of the gate.  Mistakes will occur every single game.  It's just how many they commit and how bad it costs us.

I was really hoping for a couple drafted rookies, Dane Jackson and at least 2 mid tier veteran corners. It's crazy to think Tre White will be a top form when he does finally come back. I agree it could get ugly back there but let's hope the rookies play like all pros, that's all we can hope for.

He was starting most of the year he was let go because he wasn’t that good, his coverage in the KC debacle was a big reason why we lost. They wanted to move on to get a better athlete and upgrade the position. Bringing him back would not have upgraded the position, it left us with the same problem. Can you understand that?

No I don't understand that, he wasn't let go he was signed by the Steelers as a free agent. He wasn't the only defensive back to have a terrible game, both our all pro safeties got lit up also. I prefer a guy who has been there and done that, having 2 rookies trying to learn the ropes in a SB window is just irresponsible. Again if both the rookies play like all pro's then they dodged a bullet but if they don't we may be scrambling to find some help. I don't hate the Bills or the coaching staff and I'm not saying we'll lose every game because of it but it seems we've neglected to add veterans back there for some odd reason.

  3. We've known that this situation with White could linger into the season, instead of wasting money on a bum TE like O.J. Howard we could have re-signed Levi Wallace, he isn't perfect by any means but we're in a SB window with 2 rookie corners and Dane Jackson. There were plenty of options during the season to sign 1 or 2 in FA, even when Tre returns he's missed a ton of football and may need the season just to get back to football form let alone elite form. If Elam plays at an all pro level then awesome, we dodged a bullet there but if not it's going to be an issue for sure.

  4. Ben is a first Ballot HOF player, 2 SB rings, top 9 in all time passing yards and TD's. If Allen even comes close to that or better then we win either way but the comparison now isn't even close until there is more of last years Allen. My only slight fear is Ben had an outstanding run game in Bettis his younger years and then Leveon Bell to take the load off, if Allen continues to take punishment year in and year out he's not going to last as long as ben did imo.

For the film watchers… is there a reason NOT to be optimistic? Or is it that based on him being buried in the rotation/relegated to inactive sometimes?

I thought he did well for the reps he got. I expect his chances to be even more his season, I hope he makes the best of those opportunities. It's way too early to tell though imo.

Really thought he would've been acquired by now whether by us or KC who also had interest. Would be a solid acquisition as they bring Elam up to speed providing the price is right. Xavier Rhodes would be a nice get as well.

Not as big on Haden as a lot of others here are.

At 14M per season that's just too rich for what he brings which is a boom or bust corner. I wouldn't hate the idea of bringing him in but he's sure to cost around 10M per season since Donte Jackson got a 3 year 35M deal with 11M guaranteed and he's a bit less proven than Bradberry. I think Haden would be a better fit and on a 1 year deal which would make more sense imo. What is is that you don't like about Haden other than age?

Many here would say that the Bills defense was not as good as the statistics indicated.  Probably most would agree that the Bills 2021 D did not generate enough sacks and was too porous against the run.

You might argue that the defense cost the Bills 3 of their six losses (TN, IND & Cheats*) and there are those who will say the Bills D lost the game in KC. In many ways this metric is meaningless as it takes all three phases to win games. The phases also play off one another.

However, for purposes of discussion in this thread - does the Bills D get better in 2022?  If so, Does the D truly become elite in that it wins you games not just plays statistically well?

There is talent all over this defense and now adding  the future hall of famer Von Miller only makes it that much more lethal imo. If Tre White comes back to form with Elam, Taron Johnson, Hyde and Poyer? That looks like a solid secondary. The big thing for me will be Groots progression from his rookie season, if he can be an 8-10 sack player then watch out, a stellar pass rush with this secondary will be a nightmare for every team.

I actually question if any of you like the Bills if you enjoyed that. Probably all became Bills “fans” over the last 2 years.

It was awful. Embarrassing. And nothing a real fan of the Buffalo Bills would enjoy.

    I didn't like it I loved it! I've been a fan since 1986.

Real fan, I enjoyed every second of it, Brandt pointing with the chickenwing and to top it off the Rick Flair wooooo at the end? I'm wondering how you couldn't enjoy that?

He’s already had the surgery, before the 2021 season.

He also had a terrible pro day posting 4.68- 40, 31.5 vertical and I read somewhere else that he didn't interview well either which would most definitely warrant him not getting drafted but I think someone will take a chance. https://www.si.com/college/clemson/tigers-in-the-nfl/former-clemson-wideout-justyn-ross-not-selected-in-nfl-draft

I thought this would be an interesting exercise to look at with a full 4 months to go before the season starts.  In many years, it's easy to pick out 6-8 coaches that seem to be on their last legs and need a miracle to make it past the upcoming season.  With the unprecedented number of 1st & 2nd year coaches this year, it becomes a little bit more difficult, but I'll try to rank who I think will be out by Black Monday:

    1. Matt Rhule (Carolina) - this organization is just flailing about with the continuous mediocre QB carousel and an owner who hasn't won yet and doesn't seem to be the most patient guy around.  Plus - he doesn't seem to have a lot of respect from players and doesn't seem to be much of a game-day coach either.  It's hard to see this team winning more than 6 games, and he'll be done after Year 3.  Rhule is far and away the odds-on favorite and a big game from anyone at #2 and lower on this list.
    2. Mike McCarthy (Dallas) - I gave a lot of thought to Kliff Kingsbury in this space, as I think he's "all hat, no cattle".  But then I looked it up and saw that Arizona gave him a 6 year extension (!).  So it has to be McCarthy, who with all the talent they have on the Cowboys, continues to be a raging tire fire of a game-day coach, as evidenced by the debacle at the end of their last playoff game.  I get that Jerry Jones is often overly loyal to coaches that he can push around (Jason Garrett), but I can't see McCarthy lasting past this season with an older and less talented roster.
    3. Ron Rivera (Washington) - hard to believe that he comes in at #3 on my list with all the hard work that he's done to help improve the image and professionalism of that sorry franchise.  But he's had consecutive 7 win seasons to start his tenure there, which again, might be seen as a positive given all the turmoil at QB, but he's stuck with Jeff George 2.0 in Carson Wentz, who you can't help but think is going to be a disaster in Washington.  Plus, the overall team just isn't that talented either, so you have to wonder if Dan Snyder pulls the plug after this season
    4. Pete Carroll (Seattle) - amazing to see how far this franchise has fallen.  Their drafting and personnel decisions have been a mess the past few years and I think that Carroll's act has grown stale as well.  He's now on the wrong side of 70 and another mediocre season could see him walk away, if not fired outright.
    5. Lovie Smith (Houston) - does he even see year #2 after how ownership treated David Culley?  They're not going to win more than 5 games with Davis Mills and a young roster and Smith just seems to be another placeholder for when they draft a top QB next year and pair him with some rising offensive mind.
    6. Mike Vrabel (Tennessee) - he's been a solid coach for that organization, but he doesn't seem to be on the same page with ownership and/or his GM, and after last year's playoff debacle, I think the Titans could plummet a long way this season, especially if they have more major injuries or Tannehill falls off a cliff.
    7. Kevin Stefanski (Cleveland) - going into a pivotal year #3 - the first season was a raging success, but they went through a lot of organizational upheaval in 2021, and this team could go south quickly in a tough AFC, especially if Watson is suspended for a significant length of time, or if they just lose a lot of tough games.  Never count out Cleveland to have a quick trigger finger with coaching staffs.
    8. Bill Belichick (Satan's Armpit) - he's earned the right to go out on his own terms, but with a noodle armed QB and another underwhelming draft, could this be the year that he walks away?  I hope so after a 6-11 type season!

So that's my outlook on May 1.  I'm sure that many will have different opinions about the rankings but I thought this was a good conversation starter.

Bill Belichick as much as he annoys me is an amazing coach, he took a noddle armed QB as you stated and took them to the playoffs in the rookies 1st season, I'm pretty sure he can do whatever he wants until he feels like calling it quits but that's just my opinion.

So Justyn Ross, best WR for Clemson 3 years ago. Has a back injury, they find a congenital issue, which they say is the reason teams are staying far away.

But he came back and played with Clemson. Sure he had a bad year, but he had a lingering foot injury and their entire offense was a DISASTER.

So why was he good to play for Clemson but radioactive in the NFL?

My understanding from what I'm reading and hearing is the the spinal condition that will require surgery, what team is going to want to cover this surgery that he may never recover from? The reality is there are other options with much less risk and will cost alot less. Unfortunately that's the harsh reality, he can't keep playing without surgery, it's coming sooner or later.

They both have to make it to the field, but if they do, the speed upgrade to the offense is a real problem for defenses.   Some combination Diggs, Cook, Shakir, and McKenzie is going to outrun most defenses.   However, that's a decent sized "if."  Cook has to be able to pass block and learn the offense, Shakir has to be able to learn the offense and run block.  McDermott is a demanding coach, and these guys aren't hitting the field until they've shown they can play the complete position.

And that is why McDermott's and Beane's focus on the team orientation and work ethic of players is so important.  They don't draft guys who don't have the fire burning within them to get better, and if Cook and Shakir have it, we should have a lot of fun this season.

I definitely feel Cook will be in the mix, I don't think he'll overtake Motor this season but they'll share carries and I feel Cook will be a big part of passing downs for us. Shakir has more of an uphill battle since we have Diggs, Davis, McKenzie and Crowder almost as locks imo, those thinking Shakir is going to outwork Crowder must have never seen Crowder play, he's an excellent slot WR who has been working with less QB's, I can't imagine how well he's going to do with Allen at the helm and I'm really looking forward to that.

Culture is huge, I haven't played football at a professional level but I have at the collegiate level and you can feel the difference when you're on a team that's team oriented and one that's not, I've been on both.

They did nothing to address WR though after trading Brown away.  They got great value picks throughout but Bateman is now their #1 WR.  They seem content on running the ball and relying on a strong defense.  Just a strange way to build a roster in today's pass happy NFL.

They have been a running team since Lamar was drafted, they had I believe 3 or 4 RB's on the roster go down with season ending injuries and all of them return in 2022. They made some upgrades along the OL and Lamar comes back from injury. Also I never thought Hollywood Brown was their #1 WR, that has always been TE Mark Andrews imo plus I believe they'll sign a WR in this coming free agency.

The poll function only allows for three questions. So, in your comments please also discuss for the AFCE teams that you believe are better, have they gained ground on the Bills? Do any of them pose a real threat to take the AFCE in 2022?

The Patriots have clearly gotten worse, they lost all pro G Shaq mason in a very questionable trade. All Pro CB Tretter also left to the Chargers and they haven't given Mac Jones a legit #1 WR, Devonte Parker has been a disappointment for the most part.

The Dolphins have really upgraded the roster but I just don't see Tua as a top flight QB in this league but if he proves that wrong then they should be contending with us but I don't see them winning the division, that will still be ours.

The NYJ are starting to get incredibly talented as I thought they had the best draft of any team this year and if Zack Wilson takes the next step this year then I'll go out on a limb and say the NYJ and Bills will be the 2 teams battling for that spot each year as soon as next season. They are putting together a solid WR core with Corey Davis, Denzel Mims, Garrett Wilson, Elijah Moore and Braxton Berrios plus add Uzumah at TE. The OL was upgraded with Becton, Tomlinson, McGovern and vera-Tucker. That run game should be as good as any other if the 2 backs pan out as I liked Michael Carter that they selected last season and now add in Breece Hall and that could give defenses headaches real soon. The defense needs to improve more but the additions of Jermaine Johnson and Sauce Gardner were excellent which again is why I think this team will be competing with us for sure but that's only if Wilson turns into a franchise QB which didn't appear to be the case in year 1.

For me it’s Khalil Shakir. Not sure how a guy with 4.43 speed and his production can be there when there was a massive run on WRs. Apparently Beane thought enough of him to move up 20 spots to get him.

Everything I see says he’s elite in YAC, which is something we sorely lack. He’s our long term slot IMO. I expect to see him get burn this year in sweeps and returns. I’m very excited about this pick.

I'm definitely a Shakir fan also but it's the obvious choice for me, CB Kaiir Elam, this kid seems hungry, already wanted the playbook on the plane and will most likely soak everything the secondary is offering him as far as getting up to speed. I saw what they did with 7th round pick Levi Wallace and Dane Jackson, I can't even imagine what this kid will be in a year or 2 but I'm excited to see.

I personally like our 1st rd pick in Kaiir Elam considereing how the board was falling though I feel we could have still gotten him 2 picks down without trading our rd 4 pick.

I suspected the Bills might try and move up a bit in the 2nd for a receiver but since they didnt move I'm okay with the Cook pick.  He will probably end up being a starter sooner rather than later.

If one pick pick from this draft has left me underwhelmed its the Bills 3rd rounder.  He'll probably be a journeyman backup but I feel there were better picks out there.

I Like the 5th round pick in Khalil Shakir.  Sad its our only WR pick but he should contribute some in this offense

Matt Araiza is our best pick of the 6th rounders.  We went from having the worst punter in the league to the best.  Hoping we go through this season without punting much again but after going through many years where our punter Brian Moorman was our MVP I understand how important the position is.

Not going to comment much on the rest of the picks but generall have no complaints there.

    Overall grade B

    I gave it an A.

We came into this draft imo needing to land a CB to either aide in the loss of Tre White for a couple games and play alongside of him. I really like his bloodlines as both his uncle and father played in the NFL. He has really solid overall skills with him mostly needing to work on his tackling. I also thought we needed to add more speed/depth at WR & RB and we did that taking another guy with really good current NFL bloodlines, Dalvin Cooks younger brother James Cook in the 2nd round. He immediately will compete with motor for the gig and this might make Singletary really bring out the skills we've seen from him in college and the last half of last season. Cook ran a 4.42 at the NFL combine, his pass catching is what will really bring another element to our offense because if he finds the open space we're going to get those chunk yards or long TD runs we've been waiting for. WR Khalil Shakir ran a 4.43 at the combine plus adds depth just like the James Cook pick, I didn't really think we were interested in him because I couldn't find anywhere that we interviewed or talked with him at the combine or facetime but regardless I was very happy with the pick, his hands are some of the best in this draft class, some draft pundits have said a good NFL comparison is Cooper Kupp but I'm not really a fan of comparisons as I believe these guys have a long way to go before they reach a player of Kupp's caliber. We added depth along the OL, LB and either gave Matt Hauck his walking papers or he's going to just kill it in training camp, either way we're going to have a serious kicking game when it's all said and done.

  17. I'm extremely happy with this draft class, I think we got better, faster and filled our roster with much needed depth.

That being said I wanted them to draft CB Trent McDuffie- CB Washington, I thought he was a perfect fit for our scheme on defense. Also I was hoping WR Calvin Austin- Memphis would slip just a little further to us but it didn't happen, the Steelers snatched him up. I really like CB Kaiir Elam and WR Khalil Shakir, I think both will fill a significant roll, Shakir in the not so distant future, Elam right away.
