  1. This is all nonsense from apologists. Any person who does not realize the systematic torture and killing of animals for the use of illegal gambling is a crime is nothing but a worthless fool. In the wired world we live in cultural ignorance is not an excuse. Chalking this up to a "black thing" is both stupid and irresponsible. The best we can do is call this a Vick thing.

Your own response shows your own blindness to the ugliness of our world. Ignorance may be a problem but not addressing the problem by getting to the root of its source because of political correctness is another. Vick getting caught may actually be a great remedy to that cultural issue. He said himself on Dan Patrick's show that if he hadn't been caught, he'd still be involved in dogfighting now. Because of his "stature," everyone that supposedly didn't know that dog fighting is evil now knows it loud and clear...so there aren't any more excuses of ignorance anymore to that community segment.

  2. Totally agree. There is nothing racial about this issue. Vick made horrible and evil decisions that spoke to only his idiocy and greed. Turning this into a black/white thing cheapens the situation. This was not a cultural accident, this was the behavior of one terrible human being.

first response to this thread and i'll note that I haven't read the rest of it...

this is indeed a cultural "accident" as you term it as even his supporters term it as such

for instance, Jamie Foxx said http://nbcsports.msnbc.com/id/20414907/

“It’s a cultural thing, I think,” Foxx said. “Most brothers didn’t know that, you know. I used to see dogs fighting in the neighborhood all the time. I didn’t know that was Fed time. So, Mike probably just didn’t read his handbook on what not to do as a black star.”

I think Whoopi Goldberg and a few others said something similar along the lines of "part of His Cultural Upbringing." It's great you think you're colorblind, but let's not be completely blind of the facts.

  3. Thanks, I will do that. :) When is the best time to visit NH? My relatives in Boston are dying for me to come visit them so I think I'm going to plan a trip out there soon and visit some other places while I'm out there.

It depends on what you like to do. If you enjoy skiing, now is a good time. If you enjoy the lakes and the ocean, summertime. I personally prefer autumn as it's always beautiful in NE during foliage season and it's a great time to hike the white mountains. From where I live (Concord), the closest place to ski is 20-30 minutes away (if you want to ski Vermont, Killington is 2 hours), coast is 45, lakes region is 45, Boston is 55 minutes). A lot of stuff to do in every direction.

  4. Hell no! The dems are what's ruining this state.

seriously check out NH then. we're the only state in the northeast that could go either way during elections and actually mean it when we say that we value our "live free or die" motto...something I can't say about our neighbors in Massachusetts, VT or Maine

  5. That's what I've seen too. One ABC World News report said that some people are not used to shifting into neutral and to go find an empty parking lot to try it. Not going to bother finding the video online since it was only a 5 second blurb in a 5 minute report.

it'd be a no brainer for me since I drive stick

I had a different problem with a fully loaded (nice leather seats, satellite radio) Ford Escape rental in 2009. On my way back to NH from Toronto, while going downhill on route 9 in VT the car shuts down on me while I'm doing 75mph. When I say shut down, I mean the dash lights all turned off and my hydraulics disappeared so stepping on the brakes did very little to stop the car. Rather than pee my pants, which I'm surprised I didn't do because this is a curvy downhill at a full 75 mph, I put the car into neutral, turned the key to the off position and then back on again. Nothing happened so I repeated the process. The second time I turned that key, I made a mistake and turned the wheel slightly also as I mentioned, this was a curvy road and the damn steering wheel locked into place. I remember getting ready to panic then when the dash lights all turned on and after jiggling the wheel when the key was in the On position, the wheel unlocked as well. Hydraulics were restored and somehow the engine also turned, which I didn't think you could do in an automatic as I thought you could only push start manuals.

If it wasn't for this particular instance, I might be driving an F150 right now instead of the Tacoma.

  6. Such a fun thread!!

So he says... Wait till he hits you with half the property tax bill along with the tab for the booze! One pays almost triple in NH when it comes to tax on beer!

BTW... Alaska has the highest beer tax, coming in a whopping $1.07 a gallon, compare that to NYS' which is only 11 cents a gallon. If you like the lager, that could add up pretty quickly

    Taxes

    Rank

    :worthy:

And not to metion having to deal with the MassInfluence... That is what you are kinda escaping Portland from, right?...:wallbash:

    Anyway Lana... Have you tried?:

The above link is such a beautiful song and it kinds of remind me of this thread with everybody extolling the virtues of where they live.

the booze tax may look high, however the price of alcohol is still cheaper than any other place I've been to in the US. I have friends from NY and MA that make bootlegging runs to NH for the cheap booze. The state of NH runs their own liquor stores so I guess the extra bit they charge in tax is equivalent to the profit a private store makes in profit.

Property taxes? That was the first thing state residents told me when I moved to NH. "Yeah, we have no income or sales tax, but property taxes will getcha!"

I look at my tax bill and just laugh...those fools have never lived in NYS. My house in NH is worth 3x what my house in Rochester, NY was, however I pay the exact same amount in property tax (actually, NH is a few hundred cheaper).

  7. how hard is it to put the car into neutral and then pull over onto the side of the road? seriously...

that said, even though Tacomas aren't on the list, I am a little bummed that I picked one up in late December rather than right now as I could've probably got an even better deal...

  8. From just two weeks ago:

“The Bills are part of the very fabric of Western New York, and in Western New York they will stay,” said Schumer in a statement. “Ralph Wilson is committed to Western New York, has had no contact with any purported suitors, and flatly told me that the Bills are staying in Buffalo. Period. I have long fought to keep the team here, and will continue to do so with every bit of clout I have. I was tremendously reassured to learn today, directly from Ralph, that there has been zero contact with this company and that there is absolutely no consideration of entertaining any of this company’s potential future offers. Buffalo Bills fans can rest a little bit easier tonight.”

    you believe anything Chuck says?

  9. I'm starting to look into Crossovers with 3rd row seating and interested if anyone has any experiences/opinions.

The Crossover would replace a minivan. Our other car is a 4WD SUV, so I'm not looking for something to pull a trailer or haul huge loads or go off road - mostly just looking for something smaller than a full blown van/SUV that drives more like a car but still has extra seating/decent cargo space if/as needed. Better mileage obviously a plus but isn't the most important thing. I'm looking at a price point ~30K - would probably have some upgrades from base model for some packages but wouldn't be looking to get full blown Touring model in any case.

These are some of the options with 3rd row seating:

Chevy Traverse - decent ratings, roomy, saw some questions on cheap interior and reliability, honestly wondering if buying GM at this time should be a concern?

Mazda CX-9 - good reviews, nice powerful engine, 'surprisingly spacious', nice look

GMC Acadia - this seems more like a large truck to me, bigger than I want/need

Ford Flex - sorry, can't get past this boxy look :flirt:

Honda Pilot - more of a small SUV

Toyota Highlander - more of a small SUV - read some things that 3rd row is tiny

Subaru Tribeca - don't want/need AWD, seems kind of pricey, not sure about Subaru brand...

Right now I'm thinking Traverse and CX-9 are my top choices. I'm probably leaning towards the Mazda - reliable brand, highly rated, lots of room, but not just a shrunk SUV - looks nice, drives like a car w/ a powerful engine for 'spirited driving'.

I'm not buying dick from Government Motors ever again.

Ford makes some very nice vehicles now, but I agree, the Ford Flex is kind of unsightly.

Subaru has overtaken Toyota to be the #2 most reliable car maker according to consumer reports. My wife has an Outback and I gotta say that thing handles great. My coworkers at work have both the Highlander and the Tribeca. I'd say the Tribeca drives better but the Highlander has a better 3rd row (coworker has 4 kids, 15 years, 14 years, 12 years and 8 years old).
