  1. Nice thanks for sharing, I loved the fact that they kept Yarbrough in the entire first half. J Williams looks like he is going to make the Gillisee lose like a good thing.

I also noticed this team gets out of the huddle much quicker and It appears the entire unit knows whats expected walking up to the line. Last season they looked clueless getting the plays in and coming out of the huddle. Team appeared to much better prepared for the game.

I was told that getting out of the huddle has been stressed. Especially on runs as Taylor is often given the option to change the direction of the run based on defensive looks.

  2. Whats going on guys? I finally got to sit down and watch the game after all that transpired on Friday. I was pretty impressed overall. I thought the structure, organization and most of all speed of this team is now on full display.

Especially on defense. I thought the defense played a lot faster than they have in recent years. They were rallying to the ball, causing sacks and pressures and their tackling seemed much better.

On offense I thought they dominated a defense that is going to challenge to be a top 3 unit. The line got movement, J Wills showed the vision and quickness that we saw from him at Arkansas and I think Taylor saw the field rather well.

Besides the big picture stuff, there were a few players that left good impressions on me. Specifically, J Wills, Eddie Yarbrough, Reggie Ragland, Nathan Peterman and Marquavius Lewis.

  4. I agree with you to a point, I have no clue what is happening in football, but I find learning how and why extremely interesting and I think the growing success of Cover1 shows I am right.

The future is in the data, granularity and nuance. People who love that, they will be driving advertising revenue, both within those organizations through their roles, and through their wallets, because that is the future and where the money is.

People are sick of manufactured news and pre-written cliche story lines (see espn).

I don't believe that espn is struggling due to people being able to access highlights instantly...I am not going to 10 different websites to watch a 30 second highlights. They are a compiler of different sources (like the tbd main page is), amd that will always be valuable. ESPN is struggling because they create fake, sensationalized stories that they talk about non-stop, and it got old, and they deliver those stories through fluff straw man manufactured outrage takes. This goes against what cord cutters want (I cut the cord in 2012, and the thought of having to pay espn for the level of quality of 85% of their non-live sport broadcasts is more than enough motivation to keep me away from cable for good).

LeBetard show got where it was by being different, so will Cover1.

People are sick of hot takes, we want nuance, and excellence in our niche, and that niche is large. Cover1 delivers that, and am really pumped to see them growing and gaining traction!

Appreciate all of the responses in this thread but this one really caught my eye. Not because of the kind words (Thank you sooo much), but because it is spot on. This was our first season at training camp as part of the media and it was a fun ride. The Bills PR and Media department were completely accommodating. Anytime we wanted to interview someone, they set it up. Any questions, our POC was all over it. But the impressions that our team came away with at camp was that most of the media doesn't care. There are exceptions, most of the media appeared as if they were going through the motions. Reporters had their storyline or paradigm for their story. They have seen this before, heard this before and some don't even attend certain portions of camp to even hear or see what is happening. This is surprising and not at the same time. When I hear the negativity or pessimism shine through in their stories, I am not surprised now. It all makes sense. But it is almost like they have tuned out the people who they should be listening to, the fans. They know that fans are sick of the same hot takes and boisterous statements. They want in depth, analysis like we provide. That is part of the reason I started Cover 1 and Grandstand Sports Network. I see that people want substance and that the times are changing from your traditional commentary piece on Sunday morning. People in those positions know that most fans don't know what Dennison meant by listening to his feet, heck most old school journalists don't either. But it is their job to not only report but to educate. If the writer doesn't know what he meant, ask further questions, read a book about West Coast offenses, google some of the terms I mean there is no excuse not to educate your fanbase. Instead its the same story over and over again. Taylor has to be better from the pocket, get the ball out on time. Yeah, you should report that, but WHY or HOW does he do that? That's the way I approach articles and content. It's detailed and longwinded at times but the better educated our fanbase is, the more we appreciate the game of Football and what these guys have to know in order to entertain us on Sundays. I truly appreciate all of the love and support TBD has given me over the years. If you haven't done so, subscribe to Locked On Bills on iTunes that is where you will find Nate Geary, Kevin Massare and I, 3-4x a week talking Bills. Cover1.net is not going anywhere, all of our content will still be found there. But there are some big things on the horizon, Thanks again!!

Nice work! Congrats on the rebranding

Thank you! ONLY the pod tho, keep visiting Cover1.net hahahahaa

Tons of them. You are such a geek. That's not a bad thing Bill, but you Are in the minority in regard to technical aspects. And the few others here?

We know who you are and are watching.

    So there is that, then.

I have always been delighted with your efforts Erik, another fine addition to the knowledge baseline. Winching it up a notch for us regular folks.

    Appreciate it!

This is really interesting. Thank you!

    I gotchu YOLO!

  5.

Really you think there are fans who are oblivious to that? Wow. Maybe I am just a geek but I can't enjoy watching a game unless I really get into the technical and tactical aspects of how it is played.

I will listen to your podcast this afternoon while I am at work...... really enjoyed last weeks.

I do Gunner, most people aren't into the technical aspects of the game. Thanks for the support!

  6. Who was the moron (I think it was Chris Brown) who during Tyrod's presser yesterday said "talking about combining timing with footwork is a kind of novel way to think about it for some of us"???? It is and always was the very basis of Bill Walsh's WCO.

Seriously, how do you cover the NFL for years and not know that? Dennison's roots through Kubiak and Shanhan are to the WCO that was being run in San Fran.

I mean, I do think the specifics about it is a novelty to the average fan. Most people don't understand the mechanics that goes into a timing pass, concept or play design. It is very methodical and I am sure most fans just think its just a QB dropping back and throwing it, when actually the depth of the drop 3-5-7 actually matches the depth of the route AND the progression of receivers.

  7. On this weeks podcast we discuss the signing of Boldin and how it will help the passing game. Specifically on third downs and in the middle of the field.

Then we discuss Dennison's comments about anticipatory throws and Tyrod's footwork in the west coast offense with diagrams.

  8.

Erik I'd like some thoughts on who you guys think has shone in the depth race at D-line (beyond the first 4 and Worthy) and also in the corner battle. I presume Darby, White, Seymour and Johnson are in... do they keep 5 or 6 and who might the others be?

I relayed that to Dave (Numb Bills Fan) as he is on scene today. Thanks Gunner

  9. Hey Guys,

Just wanted to call some attention to the guys at Cover1.net, they did a really good training camp podcast and have a media badge this year. Different from what you're hearing in the old Buffalo media, I suggest giving it a listen/view:

    https://www.grandstandsportsnetwork.com/2017/07/31/episode-28-training-camp-observations/

Thanks for posting!! If anyone has any other questions or coverage you want us to focus in on at camp let me know. We will be there just about everyday.

    Erik

  10. let's start one

What I like about Hodges is his versatiliy. He is similar to Poz in that he can cover the areas between the tackles quite well and back pedal fairly well. He can move to the flats to find the area where he needs to be. What I see as deficient in him is similar to Poz in that get can get lost in the wash as I've always heard it called. When traffic is thick he is not effective and he doesn't hold up against big OL like a bigger LB might. Also, similar to Poz he doesn't have the best hand eye coordination.

Short of that I like that he brings acceleration and football instinct to a team lacking experience at LB.

If we can get a solid DE in front of him to chip the TE it will be yuge. Having a solid nickel inside to keep the slot players from slipping inside him will also help.

In this defense I just don't know. We can't run like Carolina. We don't have Keuchly and Davis. We have a better DL and equal DB's.

He is versatile in a sense that he can be moved from Will in 4-3 under schemes to Sam in 4-3 over schemes. The over front helps protect him versus OL climbing to the second level, it keeps him clean because as you alluded to, he isn't a take on player. He has to play stacked behinid the DL as he doesn't stack and shed well. But he is VERY good at scraping, and flowing over the top as those DL spill the play wide. He has some man coverage limitations because he doesn't fire when he changes direction. But as far as a zone defender, he has the zone eyes and awareness to click and close on threats entering his zone.

  11. If Ragland shows up over 240, for a new coaching staff, in a new defense, after a lost rookie year, being a questionable scheme fit, he's a complete, utter moron.

giants are my dark horse playoff guy.

thanks for doing this here. hopefully you'll discuss this with us.

sincerely mean it, thanks no new thread was needed

i think he could be on point to come in to camp but i don't know where he'll be

Would love to discuss it, but it doesn't look like there is actual conversation about the player going down.

  12. thanks cover1,

    Sweet highlight reel

    Thanks!

Nice vid. It's sad that both might not be on the team next year. They make highlight plays but how about consistent simple plays to move the sticks? We need more consistency and we need these guys on the field together and healthy

Sad? Slow your roll, the season hasn't even started brother. Consistency is the key, lets wait and see how the O performs.

  13.

....EXCELLENT point bud......adapting to the capabilities of your personnel versus forcing a "round peg into a sqaure hole" makes perfect sense....good assessment

Definitely agree. I have never been a fan of the Roman passing system and or David Lee's resume in developing QB talent. He gets credit for Romo but there were some really good coaches on that staff when Romo got there so its a push for me. The system Roman runs is very vanilla. Lots of three man routes, have your athletic find a matchup or take off. It has always been like that. I do believe that Dennison's system should embrace TT's strengths. Mobility, more run/pass options, screens and just an overall better job of a putting him in favorable positions. Do I expect us to be top ten in passing or attempts for that matter? No, but if we can continue to run the ball, convert some more through the air when we need to and still remain top ten in scoring, the D should be much better than it was, we should be ok.

  14.

The issue is that Tyrod's inability to throw the football hurts Buffalo. When Buffalo has needed Tyrod to make plays in the passing game in the 4th quarter or in a two minute drill he has generally failed.

Dak has been protected as a rookie but in big moments he has led his team to wins. The playoff game only an Aaron Rodgers playing out of his mind beat the Cowboys. If Tyrod goes against a Brady or Rodgers and does his part I will not complain.

Putting it all on TT is imo scapegoating. Saying that he is unable to throw the football is an overstatement I believe too. Can he be better? Definitely. He def needs to improve late in games no doubt about it. He needs to be more efficient with his arm, keep moving the ball which last year proved difficult with the lack of receivers that could separate consistently. Especially during crunch time. Again, I am not trying to say he is a franchise QB, but the blame isn't all on him. The staff also needs to open it up more, give him more freedom, call more plays over the middle, give him some legitimate weapons, put him in positions to succeed, more rollouts, deeper drops etc etc..

So using this right here, in which game (s) was Tyrod better?

1st, I never said TT was better than Dak or vice versa, just said that using a 300 game as an argument to reign a QB better is not rational. Tyrod's best games were the 1st NE game, Seattle, Jax, SF and the 2nd Miami game were good games by TT.

  15.

Eric, how do you not mention Dak's playoff game? Over 300 yards and 3 TD's. Tyrod Taylor in 2 years never threw for 300 yards until the Miami game in overtime.

It was a great game by him, not denying that but 300 yards is not a benchmark for being a better QB than anyone. Not to mention, it was against the 22nd ranked DVOA pass defense, 14 completions, 120 of his yards, 1 TD and 1 INT were from 9 yards or shorter (including behind the line of scrimmage) and they lost...

  16.

Dak was an NFL rookie, Tyrod had been in in the NFL for 4 complete seasons prior to his 2015 campaign. You can't compare the two. If Tyrod Taylor was as good as all that NFL teams would have been lining up to pay him the original contract. None stepped up.

Def truth to that but Tyrod didn't have the talent Dak did coming out either, hence he was drafted much later. Tyrod's field vision should be better than it is right now but its not as bad as people make it out to be. What I was comparing was how Dak was protected much like TT was schematically due to field vision or lack thereof. All I am saying is that we need to step back and stop comparing Dak to TT, saying that Dak is 10x better because of the rookie season he put up. He also wasn't asked to do much not. We have seen that change dramatically for many QBs going from year one to year two..

  17. QBs miss open WRs all the time, ya know because 6-6 270 lb monsters with freakish speed are running around trying to kill you. The best ones do it too. People play too much Madden.

    https://www.google.com/amp/www.buffalorumblings.com/platform/amp/2016/12/15/13976480/film-breakdown-of-tyrod-taylor-week-14-bills-steelers

"If you have followed my film breakdowns all season, you likely know where I stand on the Bills signal caller. I believe his inability to make quick decisions with the ball, stand in the pocket and deliver it accurately are the main reasons hes failed both his team and himself this season"

"Sunday against the Steelers when again, another NFL defense forced Taylor to play the position how its traditionally played and how its intended to be played in todays NFL, he crumbled"

???? Still ended the game 15/25 60%, including 2 throwaways, 1 batted pass, 3 dropped passes but 2 TDs 1 INT, 228 yds and a 100 QBR per pro football focus. 10/12 over the middle of the field for 146 yds and 1 TD....That wasn't even his worse game..

I agree that Tyrod left guys open but in all seriousness not all of them.

It was a bit of an outlandish statement

We can appreciate the good Tyrod did and criticize what he doesn't do well too.

His anticipation is not there. He has to learn to throw it away instead of taking a sack.

    Agree completely

  18. I'd take my chances with Dak going forward over TT still. A QB who has one great year is worth way more than a QB who had a good year and then a mediocre year.

I will say that I loved Dak coming into the draft http://www.cover1.net/?s=dak but his game was not much different than TT's first year as a starter, one where he had Sammy the whole season. They protected Dak much like TT. People forget that TT ended the 2015 season on fire with Sammy. I am personally holding off on Dak is better than TT talk until after this season bc now teams have tape on Dak much like TT. So we shall see how much better he really is come 2017.

Yes because the all 22 does everything it needs to tell you and your armchair qb ilk everything there is to know about what is going on the field

    pathetic

I agree with this, guys running open does not mean that TT missed them. It could mean that TT was not on that guy in the progression. Progressions, something many fans know very little about. They just see a guy running open. Where was that guy in his read progression? I think the 'guys were always running open' statement is overblown and I am one that calls him out on it when I see it on Twitter. It's not as often or as blatant as most fans make it out to be.
