  1.

...overhyped paranoia....Brady was never known for arm strength but improved greatly once in NFL workout regimen program....ditto for many others....it can be improved to an extent...Montana made a decent (COUGH) living in the NFL without being known for arm strength......Jeff George had a cannon and never amounted to more than a used cannon salesman in Iraq.....closer to home, Buffalo's very own JP Losman hit for TWO 83 yard bombs in the same game to #83 and he is where?.....yes, I know he has a championship ring with the LasVegas Locomotives, but........

The increase is minimal, but lets not act like Peterman's accuracy is anywhere near any of those guys.

I think if you're going to count dropped passes as completions to get a more accurate completion percentage, you should discount poor passes that receivers make great catches on. There were several. Zay made at least two. Reilly made 2-3. Shorts made 1-2. Just off top of my head. Plus the int that was dropped. Two of those.

    Right?

  2. Great breakdown, much appreciated.

About what I thought/feared. Looks like Peterman wil do very well but will be highly limited and easy to gameplan against. Too bad they didnt even have him throw a long ball to see what he has.Peterman wil be a very good & reliable NFL backup, he isnt going to be a franchise QB.

I think he can win, but I dont believe he is a franchise QB.

The 7 dropped passes put his completion percentage at 63.3%. And whether the lack of long passes was intentional or a sign he can't do it remains to be seen.

    But a decent analysis nonetheless.

He is very much like Sam Bradford, if that deep shot isn't his first read/glance route, then he will not get it deep. He can not make deep passes that the WR can run up under consistently. Will have to be calculated.

  3. Zay and T. White both look impressive.

Yeah, I think those two picks have decent ceilings and high floors. Dare I say safe?

nice breakdown...i have always liked Jones...I even said he has the intangibles to potentially be a HOF receiver someday...and even with Sammy on the team, I thought that eventually Zay would take over as the #1 receiver.

    Thanks!

  4. I was really high on Zay Jones coming out of college. Totally ecstatic that the Bills drafted him. So far this preseason his stats won't blow you away but his maturity, football IQ and route running have really shined through so far. I think Jones can be special. Just wondering what your thoughts on him so far and the entire draft class for that matter. I put together a breakdown on him if you're interested.

  5. I always feel a little better about the thing after cover 1 disects it

Strong possibility this is not our offense come game 1.....but whatever that offense is i need to see it before i believe it

    Very strong possibility!

Might be that the coaches are challenging TT in order to find out if he can be a long term answer at QB. If he can't do what they want, then they still might tailor the offense to fit him in the regular season. If he doesn't markedly improve and they don't do that, then he won't be starting here for long this season.

OMG, this is the most rational post I have seen in a while. Absolutely! They are evaluating everyone, putting them in positions to challenge them. Thats what preseason is for. Great point!

Thanks for the link to the piece. I think this strengthens my view though rather than contradicts it. There are going to be classic west coast concepts in this offense. We can argue about how many and in what volume etc... the proof of that will come once someone is counting the Ws and we know it is their true offense out there. But what those clips show is those plays are there and when Tyrod's footwork is good and the ball is out on time he can hit them. There were a couple of really good examples early against the Vikings and there was one that you guys identified in the 1st Qrtr against the Eagles that you (or maybe Nate) called his best throw of the game. I called that as soon as he made it in the game thread here. It was a perfect example, good drop, ball out on time, threw to a spot. But the evidence that he can do it consistently is simply not there so far. Going back and looking at his throws the first two pre-season games he gets it wrong as much as he gets it right. It isn't to say Tyrod can't complete those throws... he can.... but it doesn't naturally play to his strengths and didn't in the bits that Lynn tried to introduce last year either. The question is how consistently can Tyrod do it?

Yes there will be some west coast concepts, but I think people immediately think Bills Walsh...No no no, that methodical approach doesn't occur often, maybe the Chiefs and Eagles still have hard core WCO-Walsh concepts but most have had to adapt it to modern football. You can't run the Walsh timing offense out of gun or pistol....Footwork, depth, depth of routes aren't as in tune with the receivers and progressions. The scheme installed by Dennison will not doubt have some plays or concepts that TT will struggle with, there will be plays or concepts that Peterman will struggle with too mainly due to arm strength. But Dennison wouldnt have wanted TT a couple years back or this season if he didnt think he could win with him. Dennison and this staff would have rolled Peterman out there right out the gate much like they did with Siemian, a young QB with no experience rather than pay TT and lose because they can't win with him...

  6. The Bills could be a big surprise this year.

But the BIG problem for me is that I don't like Taylor and I think he will be benched during the year for the rookie.

I see this a mile away. But if Taylor surprises me, game on.

I tend to believe the same. My guess is games 6-8...

First off, I appreciate your contributions to the board. You're great at what you do and I look forward to all of your videos.

I feel that "most" people that are calling for peterman are doing so because they don't see us in contention this season and that Tyrod will probably be on a different team next season. They'd rather see what peterman can do (we've already seen what TT can do) if we weren't going to contend. I believe starting peterman to start the season would be a huge mistake, but if after a few games, if the offense is stuck in the mud, hand the keys over and see what he can do. Makes a lot of sense to me

Thank you. Very fair assessment and completely rational. I broke down Peterman EXTENSIVELY

I really like him, but he was a 5th rounder for a reason. He has a very low ceiling and probably fits as a career backup. But he is another guy that the coordinator will have to maximize and minimize with much like TT. People forget that this scheme has been successful because of its run game, not its QB when was the last time this scheme was carried by a QB? Elway? Both of these QBs will need to be handled delicately as they are not QBs that can carry a team. Throw in that Peterman wasn't asked to do much in college AND still only completed half of his passes and now fans want to throw him in, that could be a disaster. Will it happen? Probably, but not for a few weeks. Id say 6-8 games...

I think the other side is saying that Peterman is a more natural fit for the kind of offense that Dennison likes to run however you label it ("West Coast" or whatever). And they may actually be right. C.Biscuit97 makes some good points in another thread.

The thing is, we don't actually know what kind of offense Rico wants to run. He's never ran his own show before, despite previously having an OC title. Cover1 ~ you're a great film analysis guy (I think it's super cool you went to the scouting academy) but you can't dissect film that doesn't yet exist. TT may very well be a good fit for the offense that Dennison is masterminding for the Bills. But we'll only find out for sure when the season gets under way.

So I think it's a little premature to argue about whether or not TT is a good fit for Dennison's offense when none of us knows what a Bills-Dennison offense looks like.

He has coached this system for a long time, he knows it like the back of his hand so the core concepts will be there. There are many ways to skin a cat. I will say that after talking with some players, there are tweaks to the system to make it mesh with the personnel we have. For example, typically they run a lot of zone runs right? Well, we don't really have the zone offensive lineman, so they incorporated a play called 'duo'. Looks just like inside zone, but it is really a gap concept. So I get what you're saying and I agree. I do think it is premature to argue fit vs not, but my point is that if TT fails it will not be because he is or isn't a fit. He has run these concepts before, has produced better numbers in the short to intermediate area than many QBs that have played in the system and the run game paired with boot action definitely favors TT.

  7. My rant on the offense--Team lacks deep threats, so explosive plays will be at a minimum, but fans already calling for TT to be replaced for a QB that struggles to throw down the field if it isn't his first read. So take out TT who can help create explosives, extend plays? IF the OL is as bad in pass pro as they have looked and no WRs to separate, how will NP play? Does he possess the escapability that TT does? Will he have the same impact in the run game and most importantly the RZ? Bills were a very good RZ team bc of TT in the pistol, as a dual threat, he helped open rush lanes. Couple things I learned at the scouting academy studying QBs and players in general. There is no true west coast offense. So for people to say he isn't a fit in Dennison's offense it is completely overblown. I have watched every pass by Siemian, he was asked to run a lot of the same concepts TT was under A Lynn, a former Shanahan player. Offenses nowadays are such an amalgamation of concepts and beliefs to maximize or minimize personnel. Daily, I hear he isn't a fit bc..then all of his weaknesses are listed. That's the easy part. Tell us what he does well. Much more difficult, the bad always shows easier on film. Find the good, determine if the coaches are maximizing or minimizing those traits. Why was Peterman a good fit when they drafted him? A lot of those same traits u see in TT. Even some of the negatives have parallels. I like Peterman. But I don't think he will have the impact the offense will need this year w all things considered. I won't admit whether he is the future or not either. Loved what OC Canada did for him at Pitt. Did a great job of maximizing/minimizing. But to think that it can be replicated at the NFL level is being a little naive. The staff will attempt to maximize his skills in this offense and there have been far less talented players to hold their own in this offense. If and when TT struggles and is replaced it won't be bc he isn't a fit for the Dennison offense. Those very same issues we saw the last two years will still be there. If he can't be an efficient passer in this system, a system that really caters to athletic QBs and produces highly efficient run games...

Then he would have failed bc of who he is, not because he didn't fit the so called west coast offense.

  8. Love your work Erik but I don't agree on that I am afraid. This offense requires much more precision in footwork and in timing than the Roman offense. What Nate was saying in the podcast (which again I really enjoyed even if I didn't agree with all of it) about the need to get your drops right is critical in this scheme. Even more so, in my opinion when what you have is a cadre of "possession" type receivers who are not necessarilly going to get open on pure talent in the way a Sammy Watkins might. If the drops are wrong the timing is wrong and the receivers will not necessarilly be as open as they should be at the point he throws the ball.

I think it is absolutely right and fair to say this is not the full offense we will see when the seasob starts and I don't for a second expect to see Tyrod look as bad as he did on Thursday for 16 games when he has a first choice line infront of him and the full playbook to work with. But I still find the fit in this offense concerning. I have been concerned about it pretty much all offseason this is not a reactionary response to Thursday.

I watched every pass from Siemian and the west coast offense narrative is overblown. In fact, I even wrote an article about how Taylor actually stacks up better than most QBs that have played in this system. Lynn ran a lot of the same concepts that they did in Denver last year. Be sure to check some of the video clips towards the end of the article as well...

  9. They have put together a fine stable of talent (as has Cover1 as PTR mentioned) for this site. Some of my favorite follows on Twitter for local stuff, as well as respected long timers like Kevin O

    Thanks a bunch!

Are they tied to Cover 1 and Kevin Massare? Because if so, I will pay the cash money I am unwilling to give the BN

Thanks for the kind words!!! I am glad you enjoy our work.

    I like these guys: http://www.cover1.net/

Kevin Massare does a weekly podcast that you can watch on demand, or participate live with questions via comments. Reminiscent of Sal Capaccio's "mom's basement" days.

Our podcast/videocast is called Locked On Bills you can find it on youtube and iTunes!

  10. Why are we looking to "upgrade" every postition even if we find a good player

that is not how you biuld a winning team......you biuld a team with some playmakers, solid starters, and depth that doesnt crap the bed when they have to play.

If Poyer ends up being a good safety...he should stay right there with Hyde where he belongs (and he wife in the stands)

I agree with that last statement, I was pretty stoked when she shared this article on Twitter. What a smokeshow hahah

Good stuff. Thanks ET. Poyer and Hyde could end up being underrated signings. If they end up playing well, this D could be solid.

    No problem brother!

I loved him at Oregon State. He had great instincts then and was all OVER the field.

It's like he got lost in Cleveland in addition to the injury he had.

Great to have him here, great analysis by Cover 1 as well.

Appreciate it, I went back to some of his game film at Oregon State when we signed him and you're right was was instinctual and aggressive.

  11. If you follow me on Twitter, you know that when I started watching this guys film soon after he was signed, I really liked his game. I think he has a lot of the traits that McDermott looks for in his DBs and most of them have shown through two games. But if you just look at the box score, you may think to yourself, he hasn't really produced. But take a look at a few of the clips I put together on him. Enjoy

  12. gives a great perspective of Tyrod's night and how ....yes, he made at least 3-4 mistakes overall but to see that o-line disintegrate from all the Schwartz blitzes was disheartening to say the least... point being it wasn't all on Tyrod. Little more gameplanning for Baltimore and I think some improvement will emerge.. Ty's the starter one way or another, great work Erik and crew

Thanks, there were def some highs and lows in his game and the O as a whole.

McD and Dennison forcing Tyrod to run a timing offense is similar to Rex dropping Dareus into coverage.

I think the west coast offense and timing narrative is all BS. We saw Tyrod run a similar version of this playbook under Lynn last season. A lot of the same concepts he is going to run this season. The biggest difference will be the playaction and rollouts, something Lynn scaled back on last season

I do hope Dennison is saving a lot of the pocket-moving aspect of this offense for the regular season and is forcing Taylor to throw from the pocket now just to work on the worse part of his game.

I would bet the farm that is the case, I mean he didn't rollout out TT at all last game

  13. The 2nd preseason game against the Eagles was not a fun one to watch. Specifically, the starting offense. They were downright horrendous. Besides a couple runs that were ripped off, they struggled. Taylor struggled with accuracy, the offensive line couldn't pass block and it just seemed like they were never in rhythm. So we figured we would turn on the film and try to ease some of your anxiety about the QB position. I know a lot of you are calling for Peterman to play. I was high on Peterman coming out of college and I don't think that time has reached us. I also think that what we have seen from the offense is even remotely close to the offense we will see week one. Just watch us break down every throw from the game vs. the Eagles. You will see several of the same run and pass concepts, thats what vanilla offense is.

Give it a look and let us know what you think.

  14. Dan Lavoie from Buffalo Rumblings writes for Cover 1 and I thought he did a tremendous job in this article. I especially like his breakdown of WR Agholor. Most Eagles fans think he is the solution at slot WR for them, but the question is will Wentz trust him? Matthews was his best friend and favorite target. Heck, Wentz even drove Matthews to the airport when he got traded.

  15. Scrolled through and surprised to not find any discussion on this kid yet.

He played a TON in the first preseason game. I can't say how he did because it was tough to follow from where I was, but I noticed he played most of the first half. Very surprised at how much time he got on the field, especially compared to Ragland.

Then today, I find him in this ESPN article where they built "The Perfect NFL Roster" within the salary cap. Now sure, he was just thrown in as a cheap backup, but again, his name is popping up.

When he was drafted, I thought he'd be nothing more than camp fodder.

But with recent events, and it seeming like McBeane want "their guys" in there, maybe it's time we pay him a little more attention.

Thoughts? Anyone watch him much in college? Will he still be a goner/practice squad guy?

    Here is a video breakdown
