  1. Is losing Gilmore in his prime, then using a 1st rounder on a CB, the definition of spinning our wheels? Especially considering all of the other holes to fill on this roster (safety, DT, #2 WR, etc).

This is frustration talking, but to be mired in mediocrity for 18 years, and be bleeding talent (Gilmore, Woods, Aaron Williams, Goodwin, maybe Zach Brown) really sucks.

Forgive me, but I was under the impression that the draft HADN'T happened yet?

  2. Tyrod was the best option for 2017 unless by some miracle Cousins came or Romo came and stayed healthy. TT is WAY better than he gets credit for on here. He isn't perfect but he's a solid NFL starter. It's been almost 20 years since we've had that. The Bills should continue their search for a franchise guy but it's as likely that Tyrod develops into that as it is the guys in the draft. He's still 27 and has 29 starts. He accounts for almost 4 times as many TDs as turnovers. His offense scored a lot. Let's take a deep breath and trust the process.

Wow.... I'm just not used to seeing a logical post when the title has "Tyrod" in it. I'm pleasantly surprised. Thank you!

  3. And yet 65% of the readers think we shouldn't let him go.

That's because, and this really surprises me, 65% of the readers understand that there is NO CLEAR UPGRADE AVAILABLE in 2017. Taylor gives us the best possible chance to compete at the moment, plain and simple. If we're trying to tank the 2017 season for draft purposes, by all means we should let him walk. Other than that, there is no logical reason to do it.

  4. By letting Tyrod go and resigning EJ Manuel and starting him ALL of 2017 you guarantee the Bills to have a top five pick in 2018 draft. And if they let most of their older FA players go it even makes the odds even better. Than when the Bills finish 3-13 they can draft the franchise QB that WGR and all experts are dreaming about. That is if that QB pans out.

You sir are either an imbecile or you're trying to !@#$ with all of us. Either way, it's not funny.

  5. Below are a bunch of my random thoughts about the team, their direction, and next steps. Would love to hear anyone's take if they disagree or have alternative theories.

1 - Tyrod Taylor will be the first big decision for the Bills in the offseason. Let's be completely honest about why he was benched. If he had played and gotten hurt, his contract would have paid him $27.5 million guaranteed over 2017-2018. Based on his performance, I don't see the Bills picking up his option or leaving him on the roster, which will also trigger the guarantee. I'm fairly certain that the Bills will be thinking of trying to restructure him such that the can cut bait with him after next year if he doesn't show improvement. They may of course just cut him as well, but that leaves them with just Cardale Jones, as E.J.'s contract is done.

2 - The team has 24 free agents heading into the offseason, including the likes of Stephon Gilmore, Robert Woods, Lorenzo Alexander, Zach Brown, Jordan Mills, Mike Gillislee, Jerome Felton, and Colin Schmidt. I could see them re-signing everyone but Gilmore. His agent Eugene Parker is going to demand top dollar for his client, as he does for all of his clients. We're basically looking at Norman/Peterson type money at $35m guaranteed and $15m per year in total on a 5-year deal. Harvin, Bush, Tate, Spikes and Goodwin, among others, should all be gone.

3 - I've questioned why the Bills have been trying to run a 3-4 defense with 4-3 personnel for 2 years. After 7.5 and 10.0 sacks for Dareus playing the 4-3 in the Schwartz system, he had a miserable 2.0 and 3.5 in the last two years. Caveated with injuries, of course, but Dareus is not a 2 gap defensive tackle. I suspect that whoever takes over as the HC could switch the defense back to a 4-3, such that there isn't so much of a reliance at making a dozen reads before the snap to figure out assignments. I expect that the front four will be Lawson, Dareus, Washington and Hughes.

4 - In that regard, you noticed I didn't include Kyle Williams. He's slated to count $8.3m in 2017 against the cap. If he doesn't retire, the Bills could save $6.8m by cutting him. I honestly think he will restructure a multi-year deal with a good amount of guaranteed money and become a part-time player. He's got a lot of mileage on him for a guy turning 29 and has been hurt way too much to keep him on the roster for what's left on the last year of his contract.

5 - Looking ahead to the draft (yes, I'm going there), I predict one of three players for consideration with the 10th overall pick. Deshaun Watson (QB) if he falls that far would be the first choice. There's 3 and possibly 4 teams needing QB before the Bills, so I really don't think it's likely that he falls that far. Mike Williams (WR) would be my second choice. He has all of the traits of what the bills need at WR that they haven't had for years. He's 6'3" and can go up and get the ball over smaller cornerbacks. Last but not least is Jamal Adams (SS). I personally think that losing Aaron Williams was a much bigger deal than was made out to be, particularly in Ryan's system. There are virtually no flaws identified in Adams at the college level.

Whaley's presser was a complete disaster. I almost wish he were replaced as well. I guess we'll see what happens. That's all I have for now.

Good post and I agree with everything except for letting Taylor go and the order of importance in the draft. Our number one priority should be SS without a doubt.

  6. Check the stats:

    http://www.nfl.com/stats/categorystats?tabSeq=0&season=2016&seasonType=REG&d-447263-n=1&d-447263-o=2&d-447263-p=1&statisticCategory=PASSING&conference=null&d-447263-s=PASSING_AVERAGE_YARDS

Tyrod doesn't throw a lot of INTs, which is good but other than that he's at the bottom of most stats that one might look at.

And if Buffalo doesn't have the BEST running game in the NFL this year at 5.3 yards / carry, T.T. is not even in the discussion as being an NFL QB.

    IMHO.

Yawn... Doesn't this ever get tiring? We'll never have a Brady, Manning, Roethlisberger or a Rogers type QB in this miserable organization until the front office finally gets its **** together. So until that finally happens, if ever, we have to make do with the best options available to THIS organization. Taylor IS the best option right now period.

  7. Doug, in order to remain the GM of the Bills you will need to make a very wise choice for the new Bills' HC. Make a poor choice and you will be gone and may never be an NFL GM again. Thus, I recommend that you consider all options before hastily going with A. Lynn.

The Bills need a high quality, experienced NFL HC and they need a high quality, experienced NFL QB if they expect to ever make the playoffs.

For those reasons, I recommend that your first option be Sean Payton for HC. He has the expertise and experience to match wits with Belichick and also knows what it takes to win the SB. Maybe even better than that, he would be the best man to sway QB Drew Brees to come to Buffalo.

Drees like Brady is getting up in age, but is still very productive and can still make the clutch plays. Drees can play at least another three years, which would give the Bills plenty of time to find their QB of the future.

Just because the existing Bills players are familiar with A. Lynn and like him does not mean that he is the BEST man for the job. Lynn would be a very inexperienced HC and likely an average one at best.

    LMFAO!

  8. Heres whats gonna happen. Lynns gonna be the head coach. Tyrods gonna be the QB. Hopefully Sammys return to full time health allows the offense to be seventh or better in points per game. And we bring in a d coordinator who runs a 4-3 and puts our defense in the top ten. Problem solved. No need to overthink this.

This is what makes the most sense and is probably the most logical course of action. However, a more likely scenario is Brandon and or Whaley finding a way to !@#$ this up too.

  9. Ok got it. See I would argue that in a season when you lose games scoring 25, 25, 25, 31, 24, 24 and 31 points that MAYBE, just maybe, you have a problem on defense but I could be wrong. You seem to know more about this stuff than I do so you're probably my right.

I beg to differ. Let me explain, you win by scoring more points that your opponent. Now stay with me here being a top 5 scoring team means something. If you are top 5 you have half the way there, now you need to focus on your defense and make sure they know how to tackle. If you improve the defense, those pretty offensive stats get you a lot of wins. Just sayin..

Well done on both attempts at rationalization. However, it's like trying to teach trigonometry to a bunch of neanderthals at times around here.

  10. Explain how TT is any different than Moore

Here i will help you Legs (thats it).

Guess what Moore is a better passer so its a wash.

    Now try again

I thought I just did explain why he was different. Are crayons and a puppet show needed?

  11. Is no difgerent than Tyrod needs other players to carry the game.

Now would be cheaper than TT

So very similar to out current QB at 1/3rd the cost

Yawn.... You really expect all of us to believe that you truly don't understand what Taylor actually brings to the QB position that guys like Moore just don't have? Come on man, you're TT **** is tired. Moore and Taylor aren't even in the same stratosphere and you damn well know that. Taylor helps make our offense much more dynamic and difficult to defend due to his athleticism. He forces defenses to keep a hat on him every single snap. When they fail to do that, he usually burns them bad. Is he the traditional pocket passer that every team in the NFL strives for? Hell no. Is he a better option than Moore or anyone else available to us at the moment? A resounding yes!
