  1. Gah, if you think the heat on the coach would be remotely comparable with a punt&loss then I don't know what to tell you.

Heat is overrated. The only coaches that are concerned with heat are the inept ones that are going to be fired anyway.

And in this case its meaningless. Bellichick basically told the entire league that his defense isn't good enough. That's the real story here.

  2. silvermike wins thread. Biggest mistake was the lack of decisiveness; ie they probably run on 3rd down if they know they're going for it ahead of time.

Really the backlash to this on espn shows you why coaches like Jauron make so many 'lower expected value' chicken decisions. This loss will be pinned on him 100%; where it would be 0% his fault if he had punted and lost. Which is stupid but whatever.

Also Manning is the only QB I've seen who manages the clock like a Madden expert. Run and milk the clock, run on 1st&goal, throw on 2nd. No doubt he runs on 3rd and takes his last time out if the 2nd&goal TD had been incomplete. Should be standard fare but it's not to 99% of guys. Just flawless.

If the Pats punted the ball, it would still be expected that they win the game. If they give up the touchdown, the story is that the Pats defense isn't strong enough to win the AFC. That's still on Bellichick and his team.

Giving up a 17 point lead, even if they punted, isn't a victimless crime.

That 3rd down pass you mention was almost a pick six. It showed that Indy was sitting on the short routes. It should have lowered the odds in Bellichick's mind for making the 4th and 2.

In the end, Rodney Harrison's commentary was on target. The Pats young defense now knows that their coach has no faith in them. Along with the loss, it's another weight for the players have to carry.

  3. The Colts were only guaranteed a chance if NE punted.

They gambled and lost. The Bills lost 41-17. Poor New England... I guess they'll have to fly back to Mass. and polish thier Super Bowl trophies to ease their pain.

Not sure what Bellichick's call has to do with the Bills, and not sure why he felt he had to gamble to that extent at that point in the game.

And if the Pats can't stop the Colts 60 yards from the end zone with the game on the line, well they better be content with polishing the Lombardys they own, because they're not going to be winning any more any time soon.

  4. He may have been thinking that it wasn't that big of a disadvantage to defend a short field either. The Colts would have had more than ample time to gain another 30-40 yards as it was. And a FG was useless to the Colts.

I got to believe that it's more difficult to drive the ball 60 or 70 yards than 30.

  5. It was high risk - high reward.

Haven't there been novels written here about our gutless staff? The guy said go and win the game and they came up a referee's opinion short. Was it unconventional? Sure. But so what. He has a QB that threw for 375 yards and won 3 Super Bowls. He gave him a chance to gain two yards and seal the game.

He also gave an undefeated team playing at home a chance to win the game by making one play.

  6. I'm with you.

Clearly it was the wrong call because it didn't work. Doesn't mean they would have won the game if the punted either.

I think BB knows his team . To call him stupid is just sour grapes because they have the team we all ewant.

Bellichick is a great coach, but this was a bad decision and it deserves criticism. He showed no respect for the Colts defense or his own and his team paid for it.

  7. The Sabs are looking good, aren't they? But don't get too far ahead of yourself. The hockey season is a long grind, and the 8th place team in each conference usually needs to finish at least 10 games over .500 to sneak in to the playoffs. As great as the Sabres have started, at this point they are only 8 games over .500, yet we think they are awesome because the rest of the division is off to a slower start then they are. As the season rolls along, the good teams get better, and the pretenders drop out of the top 8 by the end of the 82 games:

    Last years' 8th Place Teams:

    1) East - Montreal; 41-30-11-93 Points, 11 games over .500

    2) West - Anaheim 42-33 - 7- 91 Points, 8 games over .500

You might think it should be no problem for the Sabres to play at or just over .500 hockey the rest of the season, but they haven't for two straight years now, and I jut hope they can stay away from those long losing streaks this year and not only sneak into the playoffs, but actually get home ice advantage by finishing no worse then 4th.

As for the Bills, everything has blown up in Ralph Wilsons and Russ Brandons faces, so it will be intersting to see who is hired in January to come in and start over again, won't it?

Actually, if you count OTL as losses (and you should because that's what they are), the Sabres currently stand 7 games over .500 after 17 games played.

Looking at the 8th place teams from last season using the same math, Montreal was exactly .500 (41-41). Anaheim was 2 games over .500 (42-40). The Sabres were 41-32-9 last season, or 41-41 for a .500 record (The Canadiens had the good fortune to lose two more games in the OT/SO than the Sabres).

So a team has to play roughly around .500 to make the playoffs. Since the Sabres are currently 7 games over .500 near the quarter pole, there's good reason for excitement this early in the season for the team.

Of course it is a long season and the team still needs to prove that it can play consistently, but comparing their encouraging start against the Bills bumbling should be encouraging for Buffalo fans.

  8. I think it was the right call, the defense had finally stopped them. I had very little confidence that they could stop them if the Titans got a second chance no matter how far back they would have been.

Yes they gave up the FG, but it was a 51 yarder, not exactly a chip shot.

Bironas has made 6 of his last 7 between 50 and 55 yards. Maybe it wasn't exactly a chip shot, but it was as close to a chip shot that Bironas gets.

Jauron should have accepted the penalty if just to extend the game. They have a safety who is leading the league in interceptions, and Vince Young isn't exactly in the Manning/Brady league yet.

All they needed was a Young incompletion and the Titans were punting with a 7 point lead.

  9. Lets take a look at what the Titans did on their 3rd downs before the kick:

3rd and 14 - Vince Young pass to Chris Johnson for 15 yards. FIRST DOWN!!

    3rd and 3 - Penalty on Drayton Florence, 5 yards, automatic...FIRST DOWN!!

    3rd and 1 - Chris Johnson 1 yard TD run......TOUCHDOWN!!

3rd and 12 - Vince Young scrambles for 12 yards and another....FIRST DOWN!!

3rd and 2 - Chris Johnson runs for 23 yards and another...FIRST DOWN!!

3rd and 8 - Vince Yound Pass to Bo Scaife for 10 yards and yet another....FIRST DOWN!!

3rd and 16 - Vince Young pass to Chris Johnson for 10 yards....OMG we finally stopped them!!

So the Titans were averaging 10 yards a play on the previous 7 first downs, and that average is flawed due to the 1 yard TD run, and you think its a sure thing if the Bills go for it. Yes it's coaching scared, but I really don't blame Jauron anymore, whenever he has taken a chance this team has blown it.

Yes, Jauron is a terrible head coach, but so are the players on this team.

Big deal. Take the penalty and you have one play to keep yourself in the game. Sell out. Call an all-out blitz, or drop 8 in coverage . Call a double stunt. How about a MLB blitz.

Point is do something other than watch a kicker make a wheelhouse kick.

Fight to win the f###ing game. We know this team is young and injured, and not that good. What is unacceptable is that the coaching staff is defeated by that and REFUSES to let this team fight.

As bad as the players were in that game, they deserved the right to try to make one more play with the game on the line.

If they weren't up to it, so be it, but I'd rather have Byrd out there on 3rd and long, one more time, than watch Bironas make that kick with no fight.

  10. I get where your coming from, but the decision wasn't terrible. I realize the Bironas has been a great kicker, and that he has made countless clutch field goals in his career.

Why do you have to figure that Bironas makes that kick though?? If its just because Bironas is a good kicker, then the same case can be made for how terrible the Bills were on third downs today. Why can't you assume that Titans would have gained at least 5-10 yards on 3rd down??

He's one of the best kickers in the league. He can hit from 51. He missed from 60. Regardless of what you think of the defenses ability, you do what you can do get him to kick from 60.

If the guy's range was 45 yards, and he was going to kick from 40, you'd move him back on a penalty, right? if his range was 35 yards, you'd move him back from 30.

If the Bills were facing a kicker with a shorter range, or were playing in a rainstorm, 51 yards is out range. But those weren't the circumstances.

Bironas has a range of 50-55 yards. It's a no-brainer, you move him back if you get the chance.

  11. I love how everyone on here is flipping out saying that a coach needs to have confidence in his team to stop them on third and long. Jauron is without a doubt a terrible coach, but you coach to the situation, and he made the right move on that call.

Think back to Losman against the Jets last year. There is a perfect example of a coach having confidence in his QB to put the game away....and how did that work out?? Ohh yea...everyone was calling for Jauron's head, saying that he was an idiot for not playing it safe. It was a stupid call because he shouldn't have had confidence in JP to make that play. The same situation as today, he had no reason to have confidence in our D on another 3rd and long, and he made the right call.

You don't get it. Regardless of the level of confidence you have in the Bills defense, you have to have confidence that Bironas is going to make that kick. It's within his range, the weather is perfect, and he's made clutch kicks like this before.

So you have to figure that he makes the kick, which puts your team down by 10 late in the fourth, effectively ending the game.

So if you want to win the game, you don't let Bironas kick without a fight, which means you take the penalty and hope that the defense can come up with a big play.

  12. I'm not a Juaron fan but I respect him for not quitting. Adversity defines people and builds character that is why Bills fans are the best in the league, adversity is never far away from our team.

Ah yes, another moral victory during the Jauron era!
