  1. Just saw this with regard to bringing up the minor league first baseman:

“At some point, we’ll just do it. There are player transactions that take place in the month of August. Often, though, that doesn’t happen until the end of August,” said Alderson. “But I think at some point, if necessary, we’ll just make the playing time available.”

This is an example of why I like the guy so much as GM. He doesn't even say that Smith is coming up 9/1 regardless. Let's us know the mind set without painting himself into a corner.

  2. Well the whole Daniel Murphy trade is still a little upsetting. I'm not sure if that was Sandys call or ownership didn't want to pay him

I had no problem whatsoever with that move. In 8 years with the Mets he was basically a .280 gap to gap hitter with very little power. At best he was an average fielder. Plus he was already into his 30's. That playoff stretch he went on was remarkable but in no way did I think that would translate into what it's become. So I don't blame Alderson on that one.

In hindsight I hate the move and it's a punch to my gut every time we play him :D

  3. I gotta say that I'm not sure what more you could want in a GM.

He had a plan to build a pitching first team, was patient in an impatient market and executed it. A great line from a local sportswriter a few years ago when a lot of folks wanted to trade the young arms. To paraphrase: "For the first time in years the Mets had an adult in the room at the trade deadline".

Struck when the time was right with Carlos Gomez/Cespedes. Got lucky on that one, but that balances out the spate of pitching injuries that for me defines where we are currently.

Has been completely up front with the fans and media. When he speaks, I listen. I don't think he's blowing smoke.

I'll be disappointed when he moves on. I think he does a great job in spite of the ownership.

  4. I may not be the one to answer this the same as most since I flew Navy attack and fighter airplanes, then 32 years in my airline career on the 727, 757, 767 and 777, but...

In the Navy, flying low level training missions at 100' and 420 knots all over the west coast and Philippines.

Seeing the carrier after a long mission with relatively low fuel.

Getting to 50,000' and seeing the curvature of the earth.

Blowing up a drone over the Pacific with a Sidewinder missile.

    The joy of flying wing.

In the airlines, watching the sun come up over the European continent every trip east.

Flying down the length of Italy on the way into Rome.

Watching the Southern Cross rotate about the South Pole every night on the way to Buenos Aires or Sao Paulo.

Watching the Space Shuttle fly just after launch.

Flying down the west side of the Andes, just over the Pacific and descending into Santiago, Chile.

The entire approach and landing into La Paz Bolivia at over 13000' airport altitude.

Seeing countless demonstrations of the northern lights while sitting in the darkened cockpit.

Flying over Northern Alaska and the North Pole on the way to Tokyo or Beijing.

Just knowing you'd have the best view in the world every night.

    Gentleman we have a winner.

  5. After posting a few minutes ago I read a newsday.com article suggesting the Mets might retain Cabrera and Bruce and are OK with Conforto in CF.

Could be subterfuge but what do you think about Conforto in CF? I don't see it.

  6. Another/Murica - appreciate your thoughts, agree with most. My abbreviated thoughts after the deadline:

    - I have a great deal of trust in Alderson's decision making

    - Edgin was dfa'd no? Did anyone claim him? Hope so.

    - just a guess but maybe Matz is tipping his pitches (I was at CitiField when he gave up 7 in an inning plus)

    - no more Madoff excuses, that time has past.

WRT Collins do you just want to dump him or is there someone you prefer? I'm neither a lover or hater but I don'y see him as a problem.

  7. Wifey makes a killer all day red sauce. But that ain't happening in the warm weather months. There's a lot to be said about the first football Sunday of the season when thats on the stove. Fortunately she makes a ton in the cold months and freezes the extra. Was pleasantly surprised there was still some left a week or so ago. In between we'll have jar sauce, probably Trader Joe, not sure.

She also makes a great vodka sauce semi-regularly, but that's small batch, relatively quick to cook and little in the way of leftovers.

  8. Cool is the wrong word but in 1993 I was flying into NYC in the early evening and looking at the skyline something didn't look quite right but I couldn't put my finger on it. Flight path was up the East River so we got pretty close to lower Manhattan and I finally realized there were no lights on in the World Trade Center but all the surrounding buildings were lit up. When I deplaned I saw the reports on the airport terminal TVs that it was from what turned out to be the first attempt at bringing down the twin towers.

Looking out the window and seeing Mount rainier higher Than the plane on heading into Seattle

My father worked for American and got an amazing picture from the cockpit.

  9. Wait...I thought you were the one who said they smoke after games in order to relax and unwind?

    I don't think I said that.

My assumption (and this is pure speculation) is that they smoke after games. Why do I think that? Because I don't see how it can help if it's a pre-game ritual.

By the same token, my assumption is that players who drink a lot and are getting DWI's are probably not drinking pre-game.

  10. ...why do NFL guys smoke it?

Are they that stressed out? Don't they want to be more upbeat and on edge as a player?

I haven't smoked it (more of a beer guy), but the effects of pot (from what others have said) is contrary to what NFL players should be looking for in terms of their approach to the game (relaxed vs detail oriented). Am I wrong?

My assumption is that it's more of a post-game thing.

  11. I expect the NFL to still be thriving in 10 years but with continued rule changes to mitigate injury concerns and the specter of a major lawsuit.

However, I could see high school football suffering in 10-15 years over injury concerns and I think that's a big long term concern for the NFL.

  12. I used the link button to the right of "Numbered List" and was able to cut and paste a link and then set either https or http in the drop-down.

I think both links below work they just don't put an iframe around the video still. Wondering if there's another way to embed or if it's just my browser.

How do you guys embed video? I checked the page source and it looks like attempts above by 4mer and boyst to embed used http instead of https. I think it's gonna come down to that or a server setting.

  13. I've done that probably a dozen times (lamp) in St. Maarten. That beach used to be cool but now it kind of sucks because it's so overcrowded. It's kind of fun to try to stay there and get sandblasted when they take off but it gets old quickly. Went to a different beach there this year and it wasn't much nicer. A handful of hot topless chicks too

Fun fact: I was at that beach with the airplanes when I found out about the shady trade. I was using the Wi fi at the bar.

I've seen some humorous/awesome videos of people surfing the fence.

And others where people got blasted into the water that were humorous assuming a non-tragic ending

Since you've been there...any comments on the awesomeness/stupidity? Did you actually surf the fence?

  14. I'm obviously hoping Peterman wins the job. I know you aren't a Yates guy. It is just interesting to me. The NFL (and fans) trust "vets" more than guys that haven't played. The reason that they trust them is because they've played. Pel sky got a job this week and is 2-10 with 6.1 ypa. Does a team really feel like he give them a better chance than any other NFL QB? I'd rather take my chance that the guy that has never played can be as good as him. If we know a guy stinks I just don't see any reason to keep him around. You can always find another guy that's played (and sucked) on the street. Guys like Yates, Orlovsky, Gradkowski, etc... kick around the league forever because they were thrust into action a few times. That doesn't mean that they are better than guys like Aaron Murray or a rookie. It just means that they've played.

I get your point. I think the fear is if you throw a guy into the fray too soon you could ruin him. But that mentality probably prevents some talented guys from ever getting a chance.

  15. So we like him because he has played before? That's the notion that I'm challenging. Brian Brohm and Jeff Tuel have played too. Are we more likely to win with them than Peterman? If a guy stinks, he stinks. Being forced into action doesn't turn him into an asset. It's the Dan Orlovsky theory (which was the impetus for this thread). "I'm glad that we have a guy that has played before. It doesn't matter if he played well it just matters that he's played."

So his best qualities are that he's played before and had a similar playbook 4 years ago? I'll sleep well tonight knowing that the offense is in good hands if TT goes down.

I don't like Yates per se...or any of the other guys you've mentioned. But yes, I do like having someone who has played before to be ready for a game or two if needed if there's no confidence that the guy who has never taken a pro snap is ready.

I get your point, but look at last year when the Bills would only let CJ play one quarter in an utterly meaningless game (that they would be better off losing anyway) or a team like the Jets who didn't even let Hackenberg dress (let alone play) when everyone went down. I take that to mean those two were just not ready.

Let Peterman come in and win the #2, I'm all for it...in the meantime I'm OK with the mediocre vet backup.

  16. What would "being ready" look like? The bar isn't high. I think that he was capable of a Yates level performance a year ago.

That's been said of a lot of college QB's. I am by no means a talent evaluator and have no idea when he will "be ready" or if he already is. Ideally he comes to camp, impresses and moves up the food chain. In the meantime I like a vet at #2.
