  1. Full disclosure I, I'm a big Mets fan.

Full disclosure II, I don't expect Tebow to make it as a MLB player.

Tebow was an intriguing NFLer. Had some big moments that made me wonder if he had the "it" factor but had a far greater suck factor.

But I never questioned his desire or effort or that his beliefs were an on-field detriment (although a huge off-field distraction from the fan/hater perspective).

I have no problem with the Mets signing him. They're in the midst of an (unlikely) playoff drive so nobody will care about him until spring training...assuming he's still around in February. And I'm not buying into 20+ teams checking in on his work-out and the signing being a publicity stunt in September when the team is alive and well! The Mets are taking a flyer on a guy with some level of talent and a ton of heart and I don't see the risk. This is not the NFL where he's taking up a roster spot.

  2. I participated in this thread over the weekend objecting to Colin's form of expression, but was interested in comments about the issues he wants highlighted/addressed. Just checked in and was surprised to see the discussion morphed into a debate over voter fraud. In one respect its fascinating that the conversation took that turn, but unless we are talking local politics I'm highly skeptical that voter fraud is contributing to Colin's discontent.

  3. I am a veteran of the Gulf War so for me, the song stirs strong emotions. What better way to begin a sporting event than to hear the National Anthem played and celebrated by tens of thousands of people. The flyovers and parachute drops are nice, but for me, it is the song and the emotion that it stirs in an 80K fan filled stadium that gets me fired up.

If someone feels strongly in not participating, it is certainly their prerogative, but I feel it is disrespectful not to at least stand in observance.

I may not agree with the politics of places like North Korea, Iran, Syria, etc., but if their anthem were played in an Olympic venue, I would stand out of respect.

First of all, thanks for your service..and to anyone else on the thread who has served!

It's hit home for me the past few years as my young boys have insisted on salute/respect/silence during the national anthem. It's been a reminder to me of what a great country I live in, the struggles we face to keep it that way way and the struggles we face to evolve it.

  4.

Did he really disparage or desecrate the flag by refusing to stand up for the anthem? It's not as if he burned the flag or crapped on the anthem like Rosie O'Donnell did several years back.

IMO when he failed to stand in respect of our flag his statement was made...this thread validates it and I suppose was an easier and less controversial option than you suggest.

Am I the only one that remembers Rick Monday? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vZzeEaBHUBM

  5. I think we are not as forward thinking as a lot of people give us credit for. I think it's enormously hypocritical the stance the country takes as a whole on race and always has, and still has. I also think it's easily the best and most generous country in the history of the world.

My only point is that our flag and our precepts allow us to express ourselves and evolve. I think we've done that and will continue (and need to) to do so. Colin or anyone else) who disparages the flag misses the point IMO.

  6. Ummm... You said the country "was founded" on those rights, which, um, weren't really true at the time and apparently are still not completely true.

    Once again, you lost me.

Do you take issue with the notion of freedom of speech that the flag and anthem represent?

I just don't see how protesting the anthem/flag translates to things like allowing women to vote, eliminating slavery or addressing the issues that fa face the country today. Freedom of speech was intended to allow us move forward as a country.

Do you think we'd still be where we were 200+ year ago without that philosophy?

  7. Good for him! Singing a national anthem before a sporting event is a joke. Never have sung it, never will. That's my right, provided me by the founding fathers. It's not that I don't appreciate them, nor both my family members who fought in WWII. I'm just not a flag waving, blind patriot who is willing to ignore the problems in this country for a few minutes before a game. If you want to, great. That's your right. If not, great, that's your right. The problem is, we're never allowed to criticize the country, the founding fathers (slave owners and oppressors), or law enforcement. They're untouchable in the minds of many and those who challenge these concepts are marginalized by those without the guts to Have an honest conversation. Not all cops are heroes, America as an ideal is not ideal, and the founding fathers were not altruistic free-thinkers, they were wealthy opportunists.

Completely disagree that we are "never allowed to criticize the country". The country was founded on the opposite precept : "by the people, for the people" and freedom of speech as a basic right.

  8. I'm LMAO here. I'm always amused when issues of race/politics/history come up in a place where they really have no business being.

After reading through many (not all) pages filled with fallacious, ignorant, incorrect, and misinformed thoughts and statements about race/politics/history, I'll just say, STICK TO FOOTBALL TALK, please. Thanks.

Freedom of speech? You can easily ignore the subjects that don't interest you, 16 pages in suggests that not everyone agrees with you.

  9. For years players have used the national anthem as a platform. What makes no sense to me (cue Battle Hymn of the Republic in the background) is that the anthem/flag should be a celebration/acknowledgement of our freedoms. Including the freedom of speech to voice your displeasure with the current state of affairs. Voicing your displeasure while spurning the symbol that grants you that right seems contradictory and pointless to me.
