  1. I keep reading this all over this forum. Of course it was, every loss is. The Jacksonville game shouldn't be viewed as a game that we should have won. EJ was the starting QB and Sammy was out. Looking back at it, we really shouldn't have expected any different. Plus mathematically speaking the KC loss was far more damaging. We are one game behind them with a loss to them. Add the fact they have an easy schedule coming up, and that loss affected us more. Had we beat Jacksonville and still lose to KC we would be in a 7-5 tie with them. Considering KC's easy schedule there is a high probability we lose out to them. Beat KC and we hold the tie breaker while controlling our own destiny. The Jacksonville loss was embarrassing, but the KC loss was more damaging imo. We were rolling heading into halftime. Then we decided to stop throwing to Sammy, and Rex's defense made Alex Smith look like Montana. We really shouldn't have lost that game. I'm not saying it isn't fair to be frustrated with the Jacksonville game. Personally I'm just more frustrated with the KC debacle. I don't expect any wins with EJ on the field.

My complaint is that they needed 1 stop from the defense to win that game. 1 stop. EJ or not. The D had jax controlled the whole second half but could not stop them to win the game. That is an awful loss.

  2. On the hold, the official that threw the flag got fooled by the Texan player falling down. It looked like he fell on his own but in real time, with the contact between Brooks and that player, it looked like Brooks threw him down. Sort of like when they call holding in interior line play when a guy goes down after being touched. It looks bad but when the replay is shown, the lineman just fell or was headed down anyway. The bad thing is that it had zero effect on the punt return. None.

  3. While the Bills are at "trying to get better' and "focusing on what is ahead" could they spend 20 minutes or so on running new 2 point conversion plays? Ones that don't involve Taylor rolling out if at all possible since it seems every team sort of knows that?

Oh yeah, also work on having a tight end help out with Watt. TT seems like a nice young man. I'd like to see him live through the next game.

  4.

The better team won the game. Their offense couldn't be stopped by this Rex Ryan schemed defense. Most of their running plays were simple inside the tackles straight up ram rod runs. Their injury depleted OL was consistently driving our DL back. Their qb ran out of trouble and made some damaging plays against us with his feet.

The better team and the better coached team won. Players play and coaches coach. The result was on display on this rain soaked field.

Totally agree. Bad defensive game plan (reminded me of that no pressure game vs Cinci where Dalton just sat back and picked his receivers out all day long...looked identical). Bad challenges/no challenges. Bad 2nd half offense with no Watkins. Better team won. KC played pretty much mistake free and were aggressive from the end of the first quarter on. Bills fans deserve better than what this team is offering. There are some years when they've had very little talent and you can understand the results. That is not the case this year.

  5. Sometimes what a team does the week before doesn't mean much of anything the following week. But when a team performs really well for 4 straight weeks like the Chiefs, well they have my attention.I know they don't have a ton of stars on offense but they don't turn the ball over much and find ways to score. They have a very good defense, especially the front 7. Smith is the type of QB that seems to drive the Bills nuts with misdirection plays and screens and draws all over the place.

The Bills are on a short week, still banged up some, playing in a loud hostile stadium in a different time zone and I just don't think they have a QB yet that can win a big road game by making plays (it's been forever since they did).

    I like the Chiefs 23-10.

  6. He was injured in practice and the report is he might not play Sunday....that would be a big loss for KC...their offense scares nobody as it is, Bills would stack the box and dare Alex Smith to try and beat them.

I know they aren't overwhelmed with big name talent but the Chiefs are averaging 32.5 points per game their last 4 games. They've only had 2 games all year where they've scored less than 20 (weeks 4 and 5 vs Minn and Chic). Whether Kelce is there or not you have to respect their production and the fact they are playing at home where they tend to have a big advantage.

  7. Can someone tell me why the Chiefs are favored when their only good player is out?

    1) Their defense is very talented and productive.

    2) They're on a four game winning streak.

    3) The Bills are on a short week coming from a road MNF game.

    4) Arrowhead is a traditionally tough venue for road teams.

    5) Alex Smith has been playing almost mistake free football.

The record for teams playing their 3rd straight road game is not good in the 3rd game. Coming off a short week with travel I presume makes it even worse. (I can't find definitive numbers on either of these propositions so if anybody else can find them, either positive or against it, by all means post it).

Kansas City would need to win their games. We aren't out if we lose, but we would need help instead of controlling our destiny at that point and we wouldn't "need" to win out. It would be nice though.

KC would be 2 games ahead (1 victory plus we'd have to overcome the tiebreaker we'd be down so in effect 2 games) with 5 to play. They have Cleveland, Bmore without Flacco, SD at home and 2 Raiders games. I don't think they lose many of those! This game is HUGE if the Bills are to legitimately contend. Perhaps they could root for the Steelers to fade but KC would have a very clear and direct route to the playoffs with a win on Sunday.

  9. Of course he is not part of the problem. In a low scoring game, he completely gave up one touchdown to the Pats with his horrible coverage and tackling. Then committed a dumb penalty which negated Bills interception which would have had them in scoring position at New England 20 yard line. Two huge game changing plays in a very low scoring game. But according to you, "he's not even a part of the problem". Well how ever you spin it he was a HUGE part of the problem last night.

But thanks - you made my point - Teflon Corey - above ANY criticism, no matter how huge his blunders are.

Actually, no. Everyone just disagrees with you.

  10. The title of this thread is Defense is Still Average. I don't think they are that good. Mediocre would be my word. Every QB that comes into the Ralph is good for 300+ with a total offense near 400. That is mediocre. I'm glad the Bills won but I have very little confidence going forward. That sieve like defense that can't pressure, cover in the flat or stop screens is going to hold them back for sure.

Bradham is not a 3-4 OLB, no pass rush ability

Mario is not clearly a 3-4 DE or OLB

Dareus is not clearly a 3-4 NT

Williams is not clearly a 3-4 NT or 3-4 DE

Brown is not a + MLB

    Lawson is not a +OLB

If 6 out of 7 players in your defensive front are stuck between positions or below average you will not get good results. Communication is the worst I've seen in a Bills defense this late in the season. I really don't see this changing.

Totally agree with the post above.

  11. horrible. just horrible. at least its different.

Totally agree. There is a tradition to blue whether people want to acknowledge it or not. I don't want us to look like the AZ Cardinals or throwback Patriots. My fondest first memories of the 1960's teams, when I first started watching the Bills, was those beautiful blue uniforms against the green grass of War Memorial stadium. It's a distinctive color as it differs from all the other blues in the league (including the Giants which I guess would be closest). Even the switch to the battleship blue bugged me and I was so glad they canned those. Maybe I am just old but I'd like the tradition of this team to mean something. Giving in to these "third jersyies" to me is just a money grab by a team and leaguer that really don't need it. At least the Jets got to keep their green unis.

  12. To answer the question posed, obviously it is not over till the Bills are eliminated officially. That said, I have not seen anything, on any side of the ball, that encourages me that this team is anything but mediocre. It is a major disappointment to me that they are as inept as they have been.

If I hadn't seen the same players on D perform in recent years, i would say they aren't competent but I know that isn't true. Their pass rush, whether scheme or personnel, is not there this year. They don't pressure offenses. They rarely get turnovers. They don't force fumbles. Offenses rarely have negative plays. The only thing going for them are their corners. They have real issues at safety with Aaron Williams out as Duke Williams just doesn't cover well. The linebackers have been meh.

The penalties on ST are just beyond annoying. The lack of discipline in general is ridiculous. Gay and Schmidt have been the most consistent members of perhaps the whole team.

The Offense has excuses with the injuries. I still don't like what I am seeing on the O Line at times but I'd like to see them with all their weapons. That said, the 2 minute drill at the end of the game yesterday was so abysmal it is hard to describe. Incompetent timeouts called, terrible play selection. Ugh! Looks like they have never practiced it but I am sure that isn't true.

Until I see with my own eyes that the D is better and the ST are capable of making a play without a penalty I have a very hard time thinking this team is going anywhere. I am sick to death of the head coach blathering on about what we will see. Game after game it never seems to change.

So are they done before Halloween? I think so unless they show marked improvement.
